@triplecheeesei think you’ve actually nailed it, whenever I’ve given up sugar or alcohol or anything ‘treat’ it really makes people behave very oddly and feel that they have to justify it to me why they are having it. No one goes wild when you don’t eat sweetcorn or cabbage do they? And I definitely feel it’s because they think it somehow makes them look bad.

i’m racing on Sunday so tomorrow I’m just going to concentrate on my fluids (gonna be a hot one), carbs and get some electrolytes into me. I’m not well trained for this one so it’s going to be painful regardless.

Hi all. I did well this evening. No takeaway or even a ready meal. A tub of salad, tub of soup and some crackers got me through, so should be scales rewardable.

I refused to go to get the customer a takeaway as she is more than capable and also because it's torture.😂

I've done a few back exercises recently, not as many as I'd have liked, but have been doing enough to give me less pain and seems to help slim the tummy a little.

triplecheeese · 15/06/2025 09:55

Good luck today @thenewaveragebear1983 how did you do? It's muggy out there!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/06/2025 11:53

@triplecheeesethanks for asking, I did 2hr4 mins which is a little slower than my average but considering my lack of training and the heat I will take that 🥇 it was 6 laps which psychologically is very tough as well so all in all I am happy with that.

OP posts:
triplecheeese · 15/06/2025 18:37

Well done! Was it a half marathon? I've got a couple of trail halves booked at the end of July and I am dreading the heat and navigation.

I've written off this week as I was quite unwell and wiped out from the virus/cold thing. Start again next week...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/06/2025 19:01

Yeah it was a half. My friend and I were discussing a 70 mile ultra next year 🤔 I think it’s too big a jump for me although it is walkable.

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/06/2025 19:10

It’s now 8 weeks until I go away and I really need to knuckle down now. This week has been pretty much a write off and although I did my run today, it doesn’t actually compensate for all the food I ate! This week I have my wedding anniversary on Wednesday (although we won’t be doing anything really) and on Thursday I’m going to see Pulp, but I don’t think I’m going to drink as I am working Friday. So nothing actually to stop me getting back on plan and getting on with it. I felt very unfit today and reflecting back on some pictures, I look overweight and I don’t like it.

so- (as always) here’s the plan:

  1. increase my fibre intake. I have been doing some reading and I just do not get enough fibre so I gave purchased a fibre powder which I will be adding to a shake mid morning as well as trying to increase my veg intake
  2. focus my meals around protein and fats and fewer carbs.
  3. water water water
  4. use my stand up desk, get my runs done (difficult this week as so hot)!, and do my home workout (I planned this then only did it once 🤦‍♀️)

Good plan @thenewaveragebear1983. I'm away next weekend and have a 10K planned while away. I would love a good week so I don't go too far off plan.

my big goal is an ultra next spring. I've done 100Kms twice before (walking) so this would be my first mega run. I'm also doing a marathon next year. It sounds like I should be slim and fit but I'm piling on the pounds because I'm so hungry from training.

TalkToTheHand123 · 16/06/2025 08:30

Hi all. In awe of those able to run a marathon! A half hour slow walk is my current max. I'm focusing on housework as my main form of exercise as I have fallen far behind with it over the last few years.

I managed to avoid the bakery yesterday and opted for a tub of peppers and a packet of turkey. I did buy a small Chinese ready meal as a treat for returning home. I'm slowly starting to conquer and lean towards the sugar fix moments aren't worth it and so reducing consumption.l gradually.

I'm feeling a little bloated at the moment so the mirror isn't too nice to me today, but I'd say I'm a little more slimmer overall than the last few weeks. I did think though I would have been a lot slimmer with reducing my alcohol intake quite a lot over the last few month. Not to worry, at least I seem to be going in the right direction, just may need to accept it will take longer than I thought.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/06/2025 08:42

@TalkToTheHand123i bloat terribly in the heat as well, I am trying to preempt this by drinking water with ice and lemon and hopefully that will flush a bit of the bloat out.
@triplecheeeseto be honest I found it incredibly difficult when i was training for London (I pulled out in the end anyway due to my ill health over Xmas) but balancing food intake and output was incredibly hard. I don’t think it’s possible to train for that sort of event in a calorie deficit. what ultra are you doing? I’m looking at the Rat Race ‘the wall’. It will be 20 years since I met my friend who is doing it also, and I thought it would be an amazing experience but the training is daunting- the distances but also the time, it’s so time consuming to do 20 mile training hikes

OP posts:
triplecheeese · 16/06/2025 16:01

@thenewaveragebear1983 Loch Ness ultra so it'll be hilly! I am trying to tell myself the time commitment of an ultra is more doable than marathon training because you need to change it up and learn different skills eg running on tired legs, hiking technique, fuelling, carrying your gear, etc. The worst bit is time commitment, I agree. I'm doing Brighton marathon again but not specifically training for that as the ultra is a few weeks after. I don't know why I'm so gloomy about it, I have never lost weight through exercise (since I was 20 and barely ate anyway), why would things be different now I'm coming up to 40?

I've gained another 1lb last week as I couldn't exercise. So I'm simply overeating and all of my exercise is just slowing the upward march of the scales!

I've bought a more flattering swimsuit in a size bigger for my hols, since part of the battle is the way I feel. It's good to hear you @TalkToTheHand123 feeling better when looking in the mirror. Reducing alcohol
has other effects that make you feel better in the round - so it might not come off on the scale but over time you can sleep better and be more hydrated.

I feel like I'm blocked at the minute, I don't feel good and I don't feel capable of doing anything about it. I think I need a few good days and to shake off my illness.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/06/2025 18:28

Wow Loch Ness will be a real challenge, how awesome. 🙌

I tried something new today. I’ve been doing a lot of reading about fibre, I just do not eat enough of it and much as I try to load my plate with veg it’s not always successful, we run out, it’s mega expensive and although I do like salads I do have to actively choose to add veg) - anyway! I decided to design myself a ‘high protein high fibre shake’ - scoop of protein powder, frozen berries, milk, water, tbsp chia seeds soaked in water, and a measure of a fibre powder supplement I bought, which is 5g fibre. I am planning to increase that to 10g if it works. Anyway- I drank that at 10,00 today, and other than my lunch I have literally not snacked or even really thought about food all day! That is very very unusual for me, and I’ve had a really quiet boring day which usually means I graze all day. So I’m pleased with that effect, and I’m going to do that as my breakfast every day this week as an experiment.

OP posts:
triplecheeese · 16/06/2025 18:58

that sounds delish, I might join you! Office day tomorrow so no time to run and lots of opportunity to stress eat. Would you recommend your protein powder? I'm a bit squeamish about introducing yet another UPF

I'm not great at getting protein in so today when I was craving 3pm chocolate I ate some leftover chicken - and didn't eat the chocolate!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/06/2025 20:20

Hey, check out this product
https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/312110243

i use this one, it’s actually on offer in Tesco at the moment. It’s quite fake chocolate flavour to be honest, they all are that I’ve tried. I tend to buy whichever is on offer that’s sugar free but they are UPF heavy unfortunately. I always add frozen berries to mine to take the sweetness down and they are much more palatable when cold.

I’m ending today on 1500 cals, 30g fibre! That’s a record for me I think.

Oooo thank you. I will start on those and let you know how I get on...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/06/2025 20:29

so, day two of my high fibre protein shake experiment. Started the day with coffee, water, and my shake. I took a frozen portion of a freezer meal to work, and fruit. Tuesday is normal my most crazy day for eating because I just get so frantic and ravenous, but…. Nothing. I didn’t graze at all when I got home, just made dinner and I had a pretty small portion of shepherds pie and a tiny sliver of red velvet cake. What’s really interesting is that I ate that but did not get any further cravings or desire for anything else. How odd.

I am struggling with anxiety this week, I am very worried about the global situation and my mind is going to the darkest places. Plus I have my appointment at the breast clinic tomorrow for a mammogram and ultrasound. I have been surprisingly chill about this upcoming appointment because it was out of my hands really, but now it’s tomorrow I think I have been experiencing that pent up anxiety this week. At least hopefully tomorrow that will be put to rest as it’s very likely to be completely benign. But those 2 things combined have left me feeling very nervy this week and it’s not nice. However, normally I could be known to eat my feelings a lot but this week I just haven’t, which I guess is a positive.

OP posts:
triplecheeese · 17/06/2025 21:57

I'm sorry to hear that about your anxiety. I struggle with anxiety too and tend to direct mine at work but I definitely relate to the mental pressure of an uncontrollable, unpredictable world. Sending you comfort and calm, and best of best wishes for your breast clinic tomorrow ❤

ToutesetBonne · 18/06/2025 07:32

Hope your appointment goes well today @thenewaveragebear1983

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/06/2025 11:37

Thank you both, all clear. I don’t think I had realised how anxious I really was about it, after I left I had a good cry in the car park. But i’m ok and feel very lucky that when it’s needed we have an efficient system to turn to.

Great news!

triplecheeese · 18/06/2025 14:50

Fantastic and congratulations

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/06/2025 17:44

Yes I am very relieved. It’s my wedding anniversary today and now hopefully we can relax and have a nice evening in the sunshine ☀️

you know what, I feel like I have discovered a miracle with my high fibre shake recipe! I am just not snacking at all, it’s so weird. Today I had my shake, I made a roll at lunchtime with houmous and spinach from my garden, then I did have a little marshmallow tea cake thing. No cravings for more though, no mindless snacking or wandering into the kitchen. I’m actually not hungry now either but I have bought nice steaks for our anniversary dinner so I will eat, but probably will just have mine with salad. It’s so different to how I normally am, I am really starting to think there’s something in it….. 🤔

Hi everyone

sorry I’ve not been around but I thought I’d just pop on quickly and explain.

About two or three weeks ago, I hurt my back and I’ve just not felt like doing anything or talking to anyone, I’ve just been eating the pain away, which of course didn’t work.

I’d love to tell you that it was some dramatic event that led to my back pain, but actually I tripped up the tiniest step you could ever imagine and twisted as I tripped up it. The pain has been horrendous but is easing now.

I’ve not been able to walk the dogs or move so I’m going out in a few minutes to take the first slow walk before the heat gets worse for them.

I will go back and read everyone’s comments since my last post As soon as I have time.

love to all and I will be back albeit it a lot fatter <sigh>

TalkToTheHand123 · 19/06/2025 10:56

Hi and love to all.

5 weeks to go and far from being bikini ready so in bit of a panic. I do feel a little lighter though. Plan to increase exercise from now. Also to try plan food a bit better as this seems to help reduce food intake.
I managed to decline the offer of chocolate as the slightest amount seems to be able to cause a gain.
