Apparently I look too thin?

RolliPop · 14/01/2025 21:16

I do not think I do but several people have made comments!
Funny how they never told me I was too fat though.

Am 5ft5 and 9st.

When I look at myself I do still see a large belly but in reality although there is fat stored there it's mostly excess skin from losing over 8 stone and no amount of loss will change that

A few people have said I need to stop losing weight and I have now! I hit my 9st goal and have been maintaining.

But it's upsetting they have said that.
I feel I look healthy.
Am a size 10!!

Congratulations on the weight loss.

You don’t look too thin as in “underweight”. You do look like you don’t have much muscle, which is common when people lose a lot of weight (you lose both fat and muscle). That’s generally not a good thing as it makes you more prone to falls and poor mobility as you age (I have no idea how old you are - if you are 20 that’s obviously less of a concern than if you are 70).

Weight-bearing exercise may help you to regain some muscle mass.

Time40 · 15/01/2025 14:33

I think you look great, and well done on the weight loss; that's an amazing achievement. Sometimes when people make that "too thin" comment, I think it's envy speaking.

Needspaceforlego · 15/01/2025 14:36

Op you look amazing, don't be scared of the gym. You'll be amongst like minded people who all have the same goal, get fitter or stay fit. People of all shapes and sizes in gyms.

To lose half your body is amazing. Well done (and share your secret how did you do it?)

OpalMaker · 15/01/2025 14:41

You might feel better in an outfit for a grown up/just a bit more structure as in the very nicest way that I can possibly say it - the leggings and top do scream “Mummy is dropping me off at nursery soon”.

I’ve lost 13 stone, and have had some skin removal surgeries already, so I’m speaking as peer rather than a critic. My skin and fat is all distributed a bit differently than it is for other people now - I am careful with my wardrobe x

Quicksilver15 · 15/01/2025 14:41

I am just over 8.5 stone, same height. This is the heaviest I’ve ever weighed following 2nd child a few months ago. I look healthy, even when I was pregnant 1st time & referred to consultant due to being underweight as less than 8 stone then, the consultant just looked at me & said you look healthy, I agreed & said damn straight. You look perfectly healthy to me so don’t stress.

My best friend messaged me yesterday to say as I liked her cakes she would make me some more to stop me wasting away… I mean you need to accept that once you are slim you get these comments every few days about your weight, at least it’s not chanting in the school social room these days! It’s a strange phenomenon being slim…

Snowdrop90 · 15/01/2025 14:46

I’m naturally slim and the only people who have ever told me I’m too slim or need to eat are those who are struggling to lose weight themselves. Ignore, I think you look perfectly healthy and well done on the weight loss.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 15/01/2025 14:54

Wow what an achievement! Well done.

I also think you look great. I am 5 foot 4 and weigh 8 stone 5 and don't look too thin (although would if I go any lower) so I think you're all good at 9 stones. Maybe it's because you look so drastically different and it's taking people a while to get used to the new you, but that's their issue not yours. I think it was really rude to say that to be honest, I mean you wouldn't say to a fat person they could do with losing weight would you?

RolliPop · 15/01/2025 12:30

Thankyou for all the kind words.

I think what happened is all the insecurities I had when I was bigger were triggered by people commenting on my body.
Like I hated myself at nearly 18st and I worked hard to get here and then people are looking at me and still judging my body and passing comment and it just upset me more than it should have.

I feel happy. My BMI is in the right place. My clothes fit and I'm so much more mobile / fit.

I do want to go to the gym but it's so scary!
Especially reading the thread moaning about all the newbies who January-join!

Edited

If you pick the right gym, it's not scary. My gym is lovely and has really supportive staff and members. Go for it. We were all newbies once!

Yourinmyspot · 15/01/2025 14:57

You look a healthy weight to me. I lost over 2 and a half stones a few years ago and people still occasionally comment I look too thin, which is rubbish. I’m a healthy weight for my height.

It annoys me even more when people comment - looking at you MIL - on how much or little I’ve eaten.

If you read my replies I did say these are my cleaning leggings. I wouldn't leave the house dressed like this!

I think she’s explained she’s worn tighter clothing so we can see her figure.

Lotusberry · 15/01/2025 15:53

You look fabulous. You’re quite shapely and not too thin at all.
Massive well done for slimming down and getting to your target weight.
Don’t let their comments hurt you. Just focus on how good you look and feel and enjoy your next challenge in the gym💖

PiggyPigalle · 15/01/2025 15:53

RolliPop · 14/01/2025 21:48

I wear wide trousers or dresses so I don't even know how anyone would know. I put these leggings on for the photo, they're my cleaning ones.

Maybe they mean my face?

I'm going to start the gym though

"Maybe they mean my face?"

Or maybe they mean, how dare you look better than them.

socks1107 · 15/01/2025 16:15

I think we've got so used to people being overweight, even by a touch that we don't recognise a healthy weight anymore and we think people look to thin but actually they are healthy for their height and weight.
Well done on your weight loss

an outfit for a grown up

It doesn't matter how you say it, you are just being rude.

It's OK. She made herself look silly by saying that when I already pointed out they were my cleaning clothes.

Op i certainly don't think you should be trying to loose any more but I think you are looking great.

terrifiedchicken · 15/01/2025 18:01

Could be the face. My friend had a gastric band. She lost lots of weight but looked weight wise normal but her face looked way too thin. She has gained some weight back and looks so much better.
My male friend lost lots of weight because of life stresses and his face just looked so thin. Body was ok.

I think I've still got fat in my cheeks (in a good way!!)

You look great! Hard to tell from the photos but you look like an inverted triangle body shape (like me) so wide leg trousers/flowy midi skirts can add volume to your bottom half and make you look more balanced. Skinny jeans/leggings can emphasise smaller than shoulder width hips which can make your bottom half appear thinner in comparison to shoulders/boobs

Bamboozles · 15/01/2025 18:30

Gosh you must be so proud of yourself to lose that much weight, must have been such an incredible long journey!
You look fantastic, don't worry about what others say. Try just to maintain and don't lose any more

RolliPop · 15/01/2025 18:48

I used to be a proper hourglass before I gained weight. I'm hoping with the gym I can go build it up again.

At least from the front 🤣🤣

I think your legs do look very thin OP, and I say that as someone size 8 themselves. I would really recommend walking a few miles every day to build up the muscle. Swimming is also great. Personally I'm not a gym fan but it depends what you like. Well done on losing the weight though and you look gorgeous from what I can see of your face pic. You don't look like you've lost 'too much' in your face.

NoBodyIdRatherBe · 15/01/2025 19:07

You look amazing! People just like to comment negatively for some reason. I got it a lot when I lost weight. I think people still see you as your bigger self in their minds eye so when they see you slim there is a conflict. People who are size 10 but were never big won’t get these comments.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 15/01/2025 19:14

You look amazing OP. Is that a flock of bats you have tattooed on your arm 😍 Sorry, I don't know what you call a group of flying bats 😂

Edited to add: A group of bats is called a cloud or a cauldron I love it!!
