Apparently I look too thin?

RolliPop · 14/01/2025 21:16

I do not think I do but several people have made comments!
Funny how they never told me I was too fat though.

Am 5ft5 and 9st.

When I look at myself I do still see a large belly but in reality although there is fat stored there it's mostly excess skin from losing over 8 stone and no amount of loss will change that

A few people have said I need to stop losing weight and I have now! I hit my 9st goal and have been maintaining.

But it's upsetting they have said that.
I feel I look healthy.
Am a size 10!!

Apparently I look too thin?

As a slim, fit person myself it is a regular source of annoyance that apparently commenting on my size is acceptable in a way that commenting on someone as being 'too fat' most certainly wouldn't be.

Yes. ‘You’re too thin’ is usually said with faux concern. You’d never say ‘you’re too fat’ to someone.

CleverQuoter · 14/01/2025 22:11

I think you look fab!

Congrats on the amazing weight loss - you must be super proud of yourself.

I’ve lost a similar amount over 2-3 years and also get the too thin comments or asking when I will stop losing weight even though I’ve maintained for months now.

I think it takes people time to adjust to your new body shape that’s all x

CharSiu · 14/01/2025 22:12

You look fine, most people are overweight, think its 60% of the UK population.

bluebalou · 14/01/2025 22:15

I think we're that use to seeing overweight people now as the norm, that anyone of a normal
Size is classed as thin.. it's weird , you look great by the way, but abit of weight resistance training would help
To shape
You more and tone you.

ManchesterLu · 14/01/2025 22:20

If you've lost a lot of weight, people are probably just blown away by the difference, as you probably look very thin in comparison.

However, it's bloody rude to comment on people's weight.

You know whether you're a healthy weight or not. Exercise and eat healthily. A healthy lifestyle is what you're aiming for, not a number on the scale.

LovelyDaaling · 14/01/2025 22:20

You're the same height and weight as me! We're slim, not thin. Being overweight is such a common thing now that some people genuinely don't recognise what the correct weight looks like. Look at some old footage of Top Of the Pops (TOTP) and see what the majority of the population used to look like.

Sugargliderwombat · 14/01/2025 22:30

Wow well done and you look great! I think if you knew someone before weight loss it feels so strange seeing them slim, they're rude to say you're too thin though, you're not!

UnderTheStairs51 · 14/01/2025 22:37

They probably do mean your face. That's not to say that your face looks bad but when you are used to how someone looks and it changes radically, it does take a bit of time to adjust.

It might be that your face was one of the later areas to show the full difference as well.

I also think this kind of comment is said when you are a little concerned someone has gotten a little obsessive. I'm not saying this is you but it's sometimes applied as 'well done but that's enough '.

You do look a healthy shape but although I wouldn't say it, it's the kind of thing I have thought about one or two people when it seems like they are starting to lose muscle tone as well.

FagsMagsandBags · 14/01/2025 22:44

You look great and not too thin at all.

I am currently within a healthy BMI but at the lower end. I was seriously ill last year and went down to 41kg and I'm now about 48kg. It's hard to put weight back on due to the nature of my illness but I've gone from looking like an extra from Tenko with saggy skin on my arms and legs to not having the saggy skin and, managing to put on 7kg which is a win for me. But. I have a friend who keeps telling me I need to put weight on in my legs/thighs. I finally lost it and told her to stop saying that to me because it makes me feel bad and there is nothing I can do to make my thighs bigger. Yes, exercise but I'm too weak for the sort of exercise that would put more muscle back on me.

You don't look like you need to do much other than love yourself and be so proud for what you've managed and, if you can manage it, telling other people to butt the f out. Any exercise you feel the need to do, do it or don't. You've done something incredibly difficult and I really hope it makes you feel good about yourself.

MsCactus · 14/01/2025 22:56

Wow! You have a great figure

Not too thin, but personally I wouldn't lose anymore

augustusglupe · 14/01/2025 23:35

You look great OP and still shapely.
I’m 5ft 9 and weigh about 9st 7lbs
I’ve been roughly the same weight since my teens apart from being pregnant with DD.
I’m 60 now.
For context, I’ve never, ever, had a medical professional say I’m in any way underweight…but a lot of bitchy women have.

Kattuccino · 15/01/2025 06:44

When people comment on my size, I just tell them that my BMI is in the healthy range so I'm fine.

Well done on your weight loss OP 😀

RolliPop · 15/01/2025 12:30

Thankyou for all the kind words.

I think what happened is all the insecurities I had when I was bigger were triggered by people commenting on my body.
Like I hated myself at nearly 18st and I worked hard to get here and then people are looking at me and still judging my body and passing comment and it just upset me more than it should have.

I feel happy. My BMI is in the right place. My clothes fit and I'm so much more mobile / fit.

I do want to go to the gym but it's so scary!
Especially reading the thread moaning about all the newbies who January-join!

WeeWigglet · 15/01/2025 12:44

I think people have a real issue recalibrating their memory of you, with the you you actually are now & I guess the difference can be jarring? You must feel amazing & your BMI is healthy. Try not to engage with the nonsense when it starts.

You've done so well to lose a significant amount over such a sustained period, it's real testament to your discipline & mindset.

We all benefit from training, especially as we get older - if you don't fancy the gym, is there a bootcamp that meets in your local park or consider a few sessions with a personal trainer? Les Mills at home?

Kattuccino · 15/01/2025 12:45

"I feel happy. My BMI is in the right place. My clothes fit and I'm so much more mobile / fit" - next time someone comments on your size, this is what you need to tell them!

If you are nervous about the gym, why not try starting with some home workouts on YouTube? I do a variety of HIIT, cardio, weighted walking and light/medium dumbbell stuff. I find it much easier to fit in to my daily routine than a trip to the gym!

lompi · 15/01/2025 12:46

I think you look fantastic.

Beyond rude for people to comment nonetheless. As a PP stated, I'll bet they wouldn't dream of calling an overweight person "too fat".

I've recently lost a lot of weight too and have had the same comments. In reality I've never felt better or more confident. I think people have lost sight of what a healthy weight looks like.

brassandswitch · 15/01/2025 12:48

You look lovely OP. They're probably jealous fuckers!

Turophilic · 15/01/2025 12:51

They have a mental image of you, and you aren’t that size anymore. That’s all it means, and it’s on them to readjust their image of you.

Congratulations on your weight loss! You must feel so much better in yourself; you’ve done a wonderful thing for your health.

Shetlands · 15/01/2025 12:59

Congratulations on reaching your goal and a healthy weight for your height!

Some people can be so rude can't they! They're also wrong so feel free to tell them that you're the weight you should be at and have every intention of staying there. You know your next goal is fitness and muscle tone so tell them you'll be exercising more and invite them to join you!

safetyzone · 15/01/2025 13:07

No one should comment on other people's weight, whether it's high or low. It's probably because these people are used to you being in a different shape but it's still uncalled for.

For general fitness, getting some exercise in will make you feel better mentally and physically. I always recommend weights but find something you enjoy doing and be consistent, is the most important thing.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 15/01/2025 13:10

Not too thin at all!

Annoyingsquirrels · 15/01/2025 13:17

21 is a very healthy BMI. If you have lost a lot of weight though you will have naturally lost some muscle tone. I would look at doing some resistance training which will help with your overall shape.

Looking great!

Anotherfrozenpizzafortea · 15/01/2025 14:27

Hi op.

Congratulations on your weight loss. I am the same height as you and at my lightest I was 8.5 stone. That was in the middle of a traumatic divorce and I was simply existing. Looking back I know I was too thin then, my BMI was within normal but edging towards underweight and my life was a shitshow in general. If you think that your belly is just excess skin then I imagine you're frame shape is gonna be the equivalent of less than 9st and edging towards underweight.

Please take care to ensure you're maintaining your current weight in a healthy way!
