puddle - I don't profess to be an expert - have just got a free booklet in the Sunday Times. However GI stands for 'glycaemic index'. Complex carbs that take a while to process in the body are low GI and refined products are high GI as the body metabolises them quickly. Obviously sugary food is all high GI (and high calorie)Fiberous stuff like oats, fruit etc are low GI.

Seems to me to be based on commonsense e.g. avoid high sugar and high fat food and eat unprocessed carbs, rather than refined

HTH

sorry didn't see that the Coderator was planning to expell us GI types.

This smacks of cliqueism and I for one am ver disappointed that us bread eaters aren't good enough to be here, especially as I was a founder-member (or should that be flounder-member)

lowcalCOD · 11/01/2005 14:44

You can eat bread so long as you get your hair wet.

iota · 11/01/2005 14:45

Cod - you can't flounce from your own thread - come back and fight

aha tentun - I do get my hair wet - I swim under-water - I'm staying and eating bread

nasa · 11/01/2005 14:49

There is a book called The Nutrition Bible, written years ago - he first talked about this- brilliant book. It really is worth doing, not even so much for weight loss but it makes a HUGE difference to energy levels if you eat low GI foods. (sorry cod!) FOods with a high GI rating give raise your blood sugar level really quickly with the resulting, follow on slump.

A glycemic index list assigns a numerical value to a food. This value indicates how much and how rapidly 50 grams of its carbohydrate content will raise blood sugar levels, compared to 50 grams of a reference food (glucose or white bread). The reference food is given an arbitrary value of 100.

chocfreeclary · 11/01/2005 14:51

hey coddy you missed me out, and I bought scales for you and everything!

Will be back for more witty repartee later.......bye............

nasa · 11/01/2005 14:56

never mind your kids, there are a load of fat birds here who are depending on you

crunchie · 11/01/2005 15:10

But I read somewhere that carrots have a high GI, but as they aren't carbs they are OK. HELPPPPPPP!!!!

Beety like you I am doing my own thing, I don't really eat much bread anyway (well I have a huge weakness so avoid it at all costs!) This week I am on ready meals, next week on holiday and god knows the week after. Maybe I'll do GI then

dinosaur · 11/01/2005 15:12

Right, really getting into this now...

So far today have had one pure fruit bar (only 89 cals) three cups of tea with semi skimmed milk, one decaf coffee with semiskimmed milk, two slices lean roast beef, one tomato and one small packet of raisins.

Which I can assure you is bugger all for a dinosaur.

Not doing much on the exercise front, but did have a shag this morning so that must count, surely?

FineFigureFio · 11/01/2005 15:18

I am 15

www or GB, how many milk thistle tablets are you taking a day. Health shop said take between 1 and 3 ?

gingerbear · 11/01/2005 15:19

dino, depends on how energetic you made it!!

Think this GI thing is clouding the issue.

Cods rules work - has been tried successfully before, so to re-iterate:

no bread for lunch
booze only on a fri or sat ( one bottle in total)
no takeaways
no spuds

She hasn't banned bread altogether!

FineFigureFio · 11/01/2005 15:22

personally I have always thought carbs (bread) midday/lunch fine, after 5 no-no-no-no-no-no-no-

FineFigureFio · 11/01/2005 15:22

gingerbear, how many milk thistle tablets are you taking?;o I bought the multi stuff for a shiny coat too
