Hi everyone

Nice new thread for us all x

OP posts:
SWlurker · 30/05/2008 09:24

I bought & ate 2 Quorn chilli beef burgers last night - just checked syns online and I've wasted 6 syns on them! they were ok but I'd have had free quorn sausages if i'd have known they were 3 syns each!!

Since I had two large - ok extra large pimms and lemonade last night and some other faffy syns my day totalled 23 syns!

Oh well at least I know it did, and I had virtually none yesterday, so I reckon i'm about 5 syns in over (based on 10 a day). Just means I won't have a drink tonight (or will make sure its ONE NORMAL sized one!) and will catch up on myself. At least I feel like I'm still in control!

Am feeling inspired to cook this weekend.
Bought some reduced fancy mushrooms and some normal ones yesterday, so am going to make mushroom risotto tonight with loads of leftovers, and the mushroom and garlic pate - I have been inspired by the feature online about 10 ways with mushrooms!

Am also thinking of re-trying hash browns over the weekend - what do you think if I cooked them slowly in the oven instead of on the hob? I love hash browns but ready made ones are so high in syns. Has anyone on here had success making them before?!

Muller please can you post the recipe? Sounds yummy.

Oh, and finally, Tip of the day from Lurker, if you like individual cheese portions, or if like me you have trouble stopping your HEa of cheese getting bigger than "matchbox sized" then Tesco are doing little nets of nice cheeses in 20g portions - mature cheddar, red leicester, double gloucester and chives etc. Makes a nice change from the other mini cheese nets, and they're "adult" strength not just mild cheddar for kiddies

mullerlight · 30/05/2008 10:04

I didn't know quorn sausages were free! Happy days!

SWL- I got a good way of making stuffed mushrooms. Not sure how many syns they are as they are my own recipe. Probably not many-

Finely chop a red onion and crush garlic clove and mix together in a bowl. Add baby toms, fresh basil and some goats cheese or quark with lemon juice.
Scoop the inners of large mushrooms out and discard. Wrap with foil on baking tray and put in oven 200c for15-20 mins. Really nice with salmon or anything really.
Will post the recipe later as have to dash off to work now
x

Most Quorn sausages are free - AFAIK only the chechire cheese and leek ones aren't, I think they are half a syn each.

babyjjbaby · 31/05/2008 10:22

hello evryone i've slipped a bit this week so i am gong to start again today i hate it when is tick to it and lose weight then i slip and end up eating crap again i want to stick to it 100% but find it ral hard cos i don't go to class cos i can't afford it and i find i need the motivation of the group

babyjjbaby · 31/05/2008 10:28

just had a thought will this recipe be low syns or not

cous cous cake
1 cup of cous cous
1 cup of canderel
2 eggs
handful of dried fruit
2 cups of boiling water

i used to make it loads but was told it was bout 3 syns fo rthe whole cake and it was real filling but can't see how it can be please some one worki t out cos i love it lol

Tommy · 31/05/2008 10:44

hi babyjj - it would be pretty low on a green day as it's only the dried fruit that has syns isn't it? (not sure about the canderel but it's low anyway)

Not sure how much I've lost if any this week as missed weigh in due to it being half term. I've tried to stick to it although I've had a couple of bad meals. I'll get back competely on board next week when the DSs are back at school

babyjjbaby · 31/05/2008 10:47

ok thanks i didn't know if the cous cous was syns cos i don't know if it is a flour subtitrate i'm sure i read sumwhere that if it was being used as a flour substitute it was syns

Tommy · 31/05/2008 10:57

oh - don't know about that. I tend to just eat it (by the ton ) so not sure about a flour substitute - do you grind it up or soemthing?

babyjjbaby · 31/05/2008 11:10

uh no i just use it as it comes how do u use it

sticktoit · 31/05/2008 15:53

Hi all.

Some advice if poss please??? Just been to Ikea and had 5 of their meatballs. Checked online and they say 8 syns for 100g, how would i work it out or what would you allow, doubt 5 meatballs are 100g so was thinking of allowing 4 syns for the 5???

BouncingTurtle · 31/05/2008 16:45

I'm doing badly this week, can't seem to resist biscuits and croissants!

ThinLizzie · 01/06/2008 12:40

babyjjbaby - the syns in your cake recipe sound like they come from the dried fruit, which is 4 syns for 28g. Weigh out your "handful" next time you make it. It does sound yummy though. I make this cake syn-free with lots of cinnamon and spice instead of fruit + I eat it with fresh fruit on the side, or yogurt over it. I never get the "flour substitute" rule. I think it might be something to do with grinding the grain down to make it more powdery, but possibly not. Hope that helps.

babyjjbaby · 01/06/2008 13:18

oh thanks well if u do the same sort of thing and still lose weight then it must be ok lol i am serisly thinking about joinging slimming world to get some new books wish i could afford to go back properly

ThinLizzie · 01/06/2008 18:10

I did lose weight, just over 6st to be exact, and have so far managed to keep it off but I never found the couscous cake helped much! It slowed my weight loss down, but it is great as a non-guilty way of satisfying a craving. I think it's cos when I made it I used to eat the whole lot in one go cos it was there, and I spose that's just eating a lots more food than you might have done anyway. Also, note that it goes mouldy after a few days of storage. Not that it was around that long very often! It's best eaten freshly made, so only make little bits in one go. I would advise the same for the Klafoutis recipe in the new mag. I made some a few hours ago and it is YUM - mine was very lemony and filling and reminded me of pancakes. But I really wanted to eat it all. You can take the food away from the girl but you can't take the girl away from the food...

babyjjbaby · 01/06/2008 19:31

ok thanks thats what i do eat it all in 1 day but it is luvly

SWlurker · 02/06/2008 08:37

Morning girlies!

Have had an OK week so far - did slip up on saturday night with an unexpected bbq, I ate salad and a chicken kebab which was fine (HEb chicken I was on green) and there was pineapple and melon for afterwards - its just that when I was sat there nattering & everyone was reaching for a handful of crisps/breadsticks/god knows what I found myself doing the same - and then had a burger in a white cheesy bun - bit naffed off with myself for making the while thing synful when it started off so well. But in balance I didn't have much alcohol, so some of the excess syns are absorbed into that fund IYKWIM. I'm on 90 syns for the week, so will have a good day today and tomorrow so hopefully tomorrow night the loss will show.

Fruit is in season again - british strawberries, and (not so british) watermelon have tempted me to eat more fruit, so hopefully the speed element will help.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I think I know the answer to the couscous thing. Even though its free food, you would never normally eat a whole cake in a snack (well, slim people wouldn't!!) and then have your normal meals on top - so you're eating the extra calories from the cous cous without using it as a "low calorie bulker" if you get me. If you didn't eat the couscous cake what else would you do? probably have a slice of real cake and syn it, or make do with fruit or something, which is a lower calorie way of sorting the sweet craving. Somebody told me think of it as zero syns rather than free food, and try not to over indulge. Oh dear I'm waffling - In short I think its partly because you end up eating more than you would if you had an alternative, and to teach you good habits for life - nobody is going to be slim for long if they eat a whole "real" cake, and I think maybe psychologically you'd be more likely to over indulge in the naughty variety if you were used to eating a whole cake - all be it a SW one. Hope that makes some sense? I know - there is a part of me that always screams "BUT ITS MADE WITH FREE FOOD!!" but when you look at people's losses they do seem to be less when they eat this or the the chickpea cake often.

sticktoit · 02/06/2008 08:59

I think I'll stay away from the whole cous cous /chick pea cake altogether - don't trust myself and it certainly would be gone in a day...!

So weigh in tonight after a week without being on the pill. If I was right then I'm hoping for a bit more of a loss. If I maintain/gain or have only another small loss then it's just me!!

Here's hoping

babyjjbaby · 02/06/2008 09:03

thanks thats is good to know maybe i will just have it as a treat once a week or summit and share it with my ma i find i stick to slimming world better when i eat it as i am not very good at sticking to it as i find i need to snack but can't really afford to eat loads of fruit as we r on a very tight budget and the only other thing i do is if i am hungry inbetween meals i sumtimes have some batchelors pasta and sauce just to fill me up i'm sure it can't do u any good tho

SWlurker · 02/06/2008 14:28
