I'm just feeling deflated. I'd saved some outfits for when I get to goal, which is 140lbs, so not too far away now.

I've been feeling good so I thought I would try them on, they're from collectif, helbunny, killstar.

And they're all too small

I looked at the labels and they're size Large and XL.

I've been looking at christmas dresses and Asos put me at a size 12/M, well I'm never going to fit in those am I?!

I just feel like I need to be 8 bloody stone to fit in an XL??

Fed up.

What age are you?

You might be ready for M&S.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 14/10/2024 14:55

I'm 5ft4, and 169lbs.
I am a baggy size 14 and a slightly tight 12 on the High Street.
Go by the measurements rather than label. My collectiff large top fits great.

I don't think il ever be mentally ready for M&S!
No offense to anybody that shops there but it's not my vibe at all.

I’m 5ft 1 and probably somewhere under 140lbs, and I wear a size 14. Have wide hips and bigger bust. I can fit into a size 12 for some things but I don’t too much thought to it as clothing size does not correlate to body shape or how you actually look in clothes. Don’t be so hard on yourself please!

Coconutter24 · 14/10/2024 15:00

I’m similar 5ft5 and around 142lb (ish). I wear a size 12/M. Don’t focus on labels and sizes because they are different in lots of shops. Just wear what fits and your comfortable in

Misty999 · 14/10/2024 15:02

I'm that weight and height and a size 12 in ASOS. A size 12 is usually a M or L depending on where you shop x

Thankyou

I've just lost so much weight and thought they would be big on me now (they've been in storage for years!) And still an XL is too small?! I just felt really shit and I thought it would be a happy moment.

It's also about your shape. I'm same weight, few inches taller and I'm between a 10 and 16 depending on the fit of the garment. I've big boobs and a good arse, but small waist and ribcage.

Just try lots of stuff and find something that genuinely fits your shape or take it to be tailored.

forgivingfiggy · 14/10/2024 15:09

I'm a couple inches shorter and a couple of pounds lighter and I'm a size 10. That said, I'm sure there are styles of clothing that I'd have to size up on. But loose fitting jeans/cords/shirts/jumpers are all a pretty guaranteed 10.

soupfiend · 14/10/2024 15:16

Dont pay any attention to size labels they are a mystery. Today I am 143lbs and 5 foot 5. I like to say 5 foot 6 but I dont thats true anymore

Im a 10 or 12, mainly 12ish for trousers, quite small tops, but I have the most enormous waist, its over 34 inches. I am like a plank up and down, no shape whatsoever

For health, apparently my waist should be under 32 inches, its never going to happen.

lolaran · 14/10/2024 15:20

I'm 5'6 and 70kg which is the same more or less. It depends where the clothes are from. In UK I'm 12-14, in Europe where sizes are smaller ( and maybe truer?) I'm the equivalent of a UK 14-16.

LovelyDaaling · 14/10/2024 15:23

I'm 5ft 5" and 126lbs (9stone). Size 10 trousers, size 12 or sometimes 14 tops.

Pyroleus · 14/10/2024 15:25

Just measure yourself? Size 12 is usually 29" waist, but an ASOS size 12 is 30". Do you have a 30" waist? If yes, you will fit. If no, you won't. (Substitute waist for chest/hips as applicable to items you've bought).

I don't really want to measure myself, I've a long history of bad relationship with my body and food and I don't want to get obsessive or even disappointed with myself.
The only reason I weigh myself is because I have to for my medication prescription.

Oh right. Impossible to know then, sorry. Other people's size is completely and utterly useless to you because everyone has different body compositions and also carries fat in different places. I could be identical weight and height to you but two clothes sizes different.

coldcallerbaiter · 14/10/2024 15:36

You would be a 14 approx, I am same height and 144 and a 12

Mumof1andacat · 14/10/2024 15:36

How old are you? Gravity is shite when you're older. Any spare skin remains 'flabby' without exercise

TylerEndicott · 14/10/2024 15:39

I'm 5.4 and 140lb and mostly wear a size 12. I sometimes size up in tops because I've got a big bust and I'd rather feel comfortable. I usually cut the labels out anyway which is habit from when I was size 18.

ramabanana · 14/10/2024 15:41

Same height and at that size I was a 12/14 on the bottom and 12 on top so the ASOS sizing seems about right. I wouldn't give up on those outfits yet either, it's surprising how losing those last few lbs can slim you right down!

Don’t let labels get you down, you’ve done so well to loose the weight and almost at your target. 🙂

twomanyfrogsinabox · 14/10/2024 15:47

At 154 lbs I was a 14 on the bottom and a 16 on the top, just the way my weight is distributed. Probably a large in most. At 140 lbs actually about the same sizes, but a looser fit and could squeeze into one size down depending on the shop, haven't taken the plunge of buying smaller yet. Have also been losing weight, but I was probably squeezing into things that were really too small (in denial) initially.

KnittedCardi · 14/10/2024 15:57

I am exactly the same height and weight as you OP. I wear a size 12/M. I have a small frame though, I am a 32H. So small ribcage, big boobs. I also have small hips, 36. I am column shaped. I do sometimes need to go to a 14 for tops if they have no stretch, but if I go by website measurements, they say I am a 16/18, which is completely enormous on me.

I did wear too large clothes for a long time, my DD's weaned me off, and at 12, my clothes are so more flattering.

Oh if they are old they will be small. I’m probably two sixes smaller in some stuff at 50 than I was in my 20’s at a very similar weight. Depends on the shop.

INeedNewShoes · 14/10/2024 16:09

It’s all about the type of brands. I’m just under 5ft5 and weigh 147lb. In current day sizing I’m a 10-12 in shops like Fatface, M&S, Esprit. If I try to wear a size 10-12 bought in the 90s absolutely no chance! Same with lots of the designer brands. I have a jacket that’s a 16 that fits perfectly.

Also a ‘large’ at Esprit is a 12 and I suspect lots of other continental brands are similar.

Currently an XL is a 16. But back in the day all of those brands had an XL at a 12-14. L was 10-12 M was 8-10 Small 6-8 and XS was allegedly a size 0 but was actually a 6 (my sister was a size 0 at the time and hated how it was all marketing bait). They also don’t cut for women with hippy figures in the past or currently - Killstar’s size guide is a pack of lies.
