I'm just feeling deflated. I'd saved some outfits for when I get to goal, which is 140lbs, so not too far away now.

I've been feeling good so I thought I would try them on, they're from collectif, helbunny, killstar.

And they're all too small

I looked at the labels and they're size Large and XL.

I've been looking at christmas dresses and Asos put me at a size 12/M, well I'm never going to fit in those am I?!

I just feel like I need to be 8 bloody stone to fit in an XL??

Fed up.

Oh if they are old they will be small. I’m probably two sixes smaller in some stuff at 50 than I was in my 20’s at a very similar weight. Depends on the shop.

They're about 4 years old and they've never fit me. Just 'goal' outfits

I'd be around a 14

I'm now 5'5 and around 140 and a 10

Currently an XL is a 16. But back in the day all of those brands had an XL at a 12-14. L was 10-12 M was 8-10 Small 6-8 and XS was allegedly a size 0 but was actually a 6 (my sister was a size 0 at the time and hated how it was all marketing bait). They also don’t cut for women with hippy figures in the past or currently - Killstar’s size guide is a pack of lies.

Edited

I think this it
I'm very hippy/tummy

It’s all about the type of brands. I’m just under 5ft5 and weigh 147lb. In current day sizing I’m a 10-12 in shops like Fatface, M&S, Esprit. If I try to wear a size 10-12 bought in the 90s absolutely no chance! Same with lots of the designer brands. I have a jacket that’s a 16 that fits perfectly.

Also a ‘large’ at Esprit is a 12 and I suspect lots of other continental brands are similar.

I think this post really shows how different we all are, to me.

@INeedNewShoes is the same height as me, weighs 15lb more than me, but is half a dress size smaller! It's so very very individual.

OP you look lovely in your photo. I love that you are wearing dungarees. I always look for a pair hat suits me but have never found them. You look great!

Hotdogsarevile · 14/10/2024 16:44

Why be a slave to the label? Unless you wear it inside out no one knows what size you’re wearing? Surely if you feel good in the outfit that’s the most important thing?

clothing sizes are all over the place, they are totally inconsistent

WannabeMathematician · 14/10/2024 16:47

See you own clothes. Then they have no sizes!

You will go broke from buying nice fabrics and have no time. Speaking from experience. Though clothes that fit (in both top and bottom at the same time!) do look much better.

Mojojejo · 14/10/2024 17:55

I can't sew a button on a shirt 🤣

"they've been in storage for years!"

There's your problem. Older clothes are much smaller sizes. I have a really old pair of size 12 jeans from next. They're more like a modern size 8.

It's only been 3 or 4 years though, not decades. Bought them in sales when I first started my journey as motivation.

Thankyou 🥺
I love them, have several pairs I wear through autumn and winter.
These are definitely vanity sizing though as they're 'small'!

I'm super surprised. I am 5.5 and 165 pounds and I am a size 12, sometimes 10. How can it be so different for me? I definitely never wear size large.

UnbeatenMum · 14/10/2024 20:24

I'm almost exactly your height and weight and I'm a 14.

Ineffable23 · 14/10/2024 20:33

I'm 5' 4" and 150lb and I wear a 14 mainly, and a 12 or a 16 sometimes. If I bought based on the size of my bust I would wear a size 18 but I have a narrow waist and so as long as they have a forgiving bust I can wear smaller.

toomuchcardboard · 14/10/2024 21:19

The average British woman takes a size 16 dress, so that should be the "medium" size.

I’m 5 7, 14 stones and wear a 12 / L now in the French brands I love. It’s not about your weight. It’s about where you shop (every shop caters for their average customer) and your shape.

But I lived in ‘goth’ brands like OP during my misspent youth and except for one or two brands I could never find anything to fit my body at the time (I was 36, 32, 37 - I could wear a 10 back then in almost any high street brand except goth / emo brands as they wanted to gatekeep their clothing for thin girls.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 14/10/2024 22:18

It's not just about height and weight - it depends on your shape and muscle tone.

I'm 154 lb and 5'3" and roughly a size 16. Depending on the style of top I'm sometimes OK with a 14 but sometimes need an 18 in anything that needs to fit on my waist. I've completely changed shape during my 50s.

Disturbia81 · 15/10/2024 10:07

OP you look really slim, congrats on your weight loss!

OP you look really slim, congrats on your weight loss!

Thankyou. I've lost 90lbs.

I guess that could be another reason. The skin and all residual weight piling around my stomach/hips.

I just reached 10st when I weighed myself this morning and have been trying old jeans on. I fitted into size 10, 12 & 14 from different places. Don't pay as much attention to the labels. I do find ASOS sizing quite generous though

theeyeofdoe · 03/11/2024 13:25

I’d reckon a 14 too.
I’m your height and 9stone (which I think is about 125lbs) I wear a 10/S. occasionally a 12 if it has a narrow upper waist.

Unless it’s something like brandy melville. Usually a 10 is a small, 12 medium, 14 large and 16 extra large.

MiddleAgedDread · 03/11/2024 13:30

5ft 6 and 154lb and I’m a 12 in trousers and a 10-12 top (in shops like M&S) but narrow shouldered and don’t have big boobs. I run and weight train so I think I’m relatively heavy for my size.

Mojojejo · 03/11/2024 14:18

I'm down to 145lbs and stuff is fitting much better
Still another 11lbs to go but feeling much better.

Understairscupboard · 03/11/2024 14:22

I'm 5ft5 and 154lbs. My size depends where I shop and can range from 10 to 16. In Seasalt I'm a 12.

NorthernSpirit · 03/11/2024 14:37

I’m 5ft 5.5” and weigh 133 lb. I have a 34C bust. I have a quite ‘athletic’ figure (I train 5 x per week).

I’m a UK size 10, small.

I’ve been a slave to label sizes for years and haven’t bought something if it’s bigger or my size has been too tight.

What I’ve recently realised is that no one cares or sees the label. As Trinny says - wear what makes you feel fabulous!
