Team RH - is it really so bad?

porculime · 05/07/2024 08:07

After having wobbles about taking Mounjaro, I keep getting really tempted by Team RH. The higher calories appeal to me, and I'm already trying to hugely up my steps. His sweariness doesn't bother me. But I keep reading such negative comments on here. Is it really not worth it?

All I really want is to know what calories they suggest and the protein / fibre etc. I know I could get this was a TDEE calculator, but the calorie targets always seem so low. My BMI is about 37.

Does anyone have any positives?

I was a member in the early days and it was great - there were individual calorie clubs with meal ideas, traing and coaching. Then Richie's ego took over and it changed an awful lot. There's barely any coaching now from actual coaches or nutritionists, it's all FB rants and advice from other members who might know no more than you.
The basics are sound but you can get what you need without paying team RH. Maybe it's changed since I left a couple of years ago but it had hit really poor at that point.

LovelyBitOfSquirrrel · 05/07/2024 08:26

If you’re taking the calorie counting approach anyway why not just use my fitness pal combined witch recipe books which state the calories/macros such as pinch as nom. Thats what I do, successfully lost 3.5 stone, put 1.5 back on following pregnancy so working on the same approach again.

CandiedPrincess · 05/07/2024 08:31

He's a total prick. Don't give him your money.

functioningadult · 05/07/2024 08:43

He's awful, don't go there.

If you just want the calorie target use this one - it's free and gives you near enough exactly what Team RH do.

If you go online and find what you need to eat to be in a calorie deficit, reduce your intake cals by 500, hit at least 10,000 steps daily and do 3 strengthening workouts a week, your sorted. I was a member and this is exactly what they told me to do. It's easily done without paying the fee. They just use my fitness pal, which is free to use the basic features, which is all you need. Good luck with your journey!

BrioLover · 05/07/2024 08:48

I'd spend the money on a personal trainer and gym membership, and get the trainer to do you a plan. It'll most likely be small calorie deficit so you lose weight, high protein so you build muscle (muscle takes up much less space than fat), and a training programme that is realistic for you and your abilities.

See the PT once a week, exercise twice more on top of that. Increase steps and do not include exercise in your calorie calculations. You won't see the very fast drop of something like Mounjaro BUT you're much less likely to get loose skin because you're doing it sustainably and building muscle.

This is great advice. I needed a programme and regular check ins to keep on track though - there's no shame in not being able to "just do it yourself".

Pinkstanley · 05/07/2024 08:53

I’ve just finished a year with team RH. It was ok. Better now they have their own app. Previously it was using my fitness pal which linked to a more basic tracking app of his. I did well though and I liked the fact that I paid money which kept me on track. If you are strict with yourself and don’t need that daily reminder coming up on Facebook or via the app then try yourself. I need my arse booted every day. I don’t regret it. Similarly I don’t think I’d have regretted slimming world or weight watchers.

That's it though - when I look online, I always seem to get a really low TDEE, and then when I reduce by 500 to create a deficit , it becomes too restrictive. I'm very overweight and just can't sustain such low calories for a long time without giving in. I also never know what to put for how active I am - at least steps makes it easily understandable. Everyone on Team RH seems to be on reasonable calories, or is this just how it seems from the outside?

Actually, the use of MFP puts me off. I already pay for Nutracheck, which I much prefer. I just don't really know what calories to aim for with 10000 steps included. If it's too restrictive, I'm worried I'll fail again.

Reopening this thread for some VERY useful info.

Former CX employee here, I can confirm their number 1 goal is not to help you but to bleed you dry.
How to cancel your contract without threats of debt collection?

Well, very easily actually:

They do NOT go through debt collection however if you just tell them that you or someone in your family has cancer or died, they'll let you go without requesting any proof.

You're welcome!

It’s no different to calorie counting on my fitness pal. Use https://www.jamessmithacademy.com/macro-calculator/ to work out your macros and track your calories on a free app.

Interesting that the thread has come back up. I count my calories everyday and usually average about 1400 over the week. I aim for 10000 steps, thought it isn't always as consistent as it could be , and I usually lose about a pound to a pound and a half a week (I'm still taking mounjaro). My watch says I use about 2300 calories a day.

How could I possibly lose weight be eating over 2200 calories, as the James Smith calculator suggests? I'd love to believe it, but surely the evidence above suggests otherwise?

I'd like to go on it just to see what calories it recommends for somewhere of my size doing 10000 steps and no workouts (at the minute), because like I said above, the high calories amounts seem too good to be true. But I don't want to pay for a full year just for that.

It’s the same as the calculator I posted. They use the same, or very similar formula.

Ah thank you - I didn't realise they were so similar. But how could I possibly lose weight on 2300 calories, when I'm only losing about a pound and a half a week now on 1400 max? I want to believe it, but I don't understand.

Thank you for getting back to me though - I've been tempted so many times just for the calculator, so now I won't be anymore.

Because it’s more sustainable. All a VLD does is lead to a very short term loss but increase levels of leptin production and increase your hunger hormones. Work out your TDEE and then extra for calories. If you’re large you will have a higher base point, you’ll be eating more than that if you’re a bigger person.

Ghost87 · 28/11/2024 08:50

Also wanted to add, they're so called coaches, most of them didn't get their qualifications until later in the years. Coach Justine is just a customer service agent, no coaching qualification (on op of having an unbearable accent but that's another story). She isn't a coach and not qualified to give you a device!! This needs to be challenged!
