WTF is going on with my weight!

I worked VERY hard to lose a stone Sept - May. I was eating only fruit and yogurt for breakfast and a normal evening meal. I have been away for a week and ate my normal small breakfast, a small lunch with no carbs - eg a salad or soup and normal evening meal, then 2 glasses of wine or 1 cocktail 1 wine a day. I have put the whole stone back on. How the fuck? Is it the wine? I am so confused :(

We get Gousto boxes - they are 600-800 calorie balanced meals with 2-3 servings of veg and a good amount of protein.

My evening meals on holiday were no larger or more indulgent than at home, is what I was trying to say.

This happens to me every time I go on holiday, despite being more active than I am at home. Give it a couple of days on your usual diet and weigh again - I bet the scales will drop right down.

That's interesting - is it water weight from the alcohol do you think? I will check in a few days - I hope so, feel v defeated!

800cals for one meal is loads, maybe start calorie counting

A bit of both but they had calorie counters on the menus and I picked sensibly.

I don’t know to be honest. I drink cocktails on holiday so I suppose I’m having more sugar than normal. Just leave it for a couple of days and be good, then try again, it usually falls off me once I’m back in my usual eating routine.

I only have a 100-200 calorie breakfast. I find if I do not share a meal with my family in the evening I feel very deprived. I do a very small breakfast at 6.30am and then nothing except water/tea until 7.30pm when I have dinner means I feel a lot happier! It worked to lose the initial weight, I am shocked how quickly it came back.

That is what we had last night - 821 calories.

This is tonight - 450calories

I am not sure if the ones you have seen are more cals or less tbh - I find they have a massive variety from 450-1500 per meal but I chose them carefully. DH has a double Gosuto portion, a massive lunch and breakfast and plentiful snacks and stuggles to maintain his weight - it is frustrating! 😂

There is literally no way you have put on a stone in a week. That would be nearly 50,000 extra calories. I put on 6 lb in three days at center parcs last week, but I had lost it all within 4 days. I bet it drops back off over the next day or so

Yes, this is my thought, but what does it? The water retention due to alcohol? My waist has certainly expanded!

OP posts:
MiddleAgedDread · 03/06/2024 11:31

Were you somewhere hot? Fluid retention tends to increase in the heat, I always weight more after I've been on a flight and meals out probably include more salt than you'd use at home.

Pushmepullyou · 03/06/2024 11:31

Water retention, more food in your system, your scales have been moved or are broken?

User1979289 · 03/06/2024 11:37

@MiddleAgedDread No, I was in the UK. I did less running around than usual and slept a lot more

Stupid comment. Firstly it's not loads if it fits in a calorie controlled diet, secondly obviously she already is otherwise she wouldn't know the calorie content and thirdly she said she didn't eat lunch!

Alainlechat · 03/06/2024 11:46

I once put on 8lbs on a two week holiday but was back to the pre holiday weight within two weeks going back to my original eating plan and calorie deficit.

The weight gain is likely water retention from more carbs, more salty foods.

User1979289 · 03/06/2024 11:48

Thanks so much for your comments, this is very reassuring.

If you were on low carb diet before, eating normally makes water come back. Also alcohol is very calorific so unless you counted all the drinks in your daily intake then you’ve likely put a bit of weight because of that (but not as much in a week)

I definitely had an additional 400 cals of booze a day - maybe more as the drinks were not labelled.

calorie counts on menus can be very inaccurate - especially if chef puts a drizzle of olive oil over it to make it looks nice as it goes out for service at 150 cal a teaspoon (by way of example, I haven’t checked what a teaspoon of olive oil is lately but it’s a lot!)
