WTF is going on with my weight!

I worked VERY hard to lose a stone Sept - May. I was eating only fruit and yogurt for breakfast and a normal evening meal. I have been away for a week and ate my normal small breakfast, a small lunch with no carbs - eg a salad or soup and normal evening meal, then 2 glasses of wine or 1 cocktail 1 wine a day. I have put the whole stone back on. How the fuck? Is it the wine? I am so confused :(

It's water weight, just get back on plan and it'll be off in a week! Keep drinking lots, flush it out
Happens to me everytime, the key is NOT to go binge now thinking it's a waste of time

TheShellBeach · 03/06/2024 12:08

Where are you in your menstrual cycle?

User1979289 · 03/06/2024 12:10

@TheShellBeach I am peri-menopausal so "all over the place constantly" sadly.

It is probably mostly water. I often get constipated as well when I travel, so maybe if that's the case you just need some dulcoease?
If you go back to your modest eating I'm sure most of it will go in a couple of weeks!

PieonaBarm · 03/06/2024 12:21

If you've had 400 extra calories in alcohol and lunch - effectively an extra meal than you normally would (as a guide a tin of Heinz Tomato soup is around 210 calories) you will likely have gained a little, not likely a stone, but a few pounds. You will loose a bit over the next few days but you might have gained a pound or two.

You've been on holiday and spent time with your family. Get back on it this week and then Weigh again next week and you'll know where you're at.

SallyWD · 03/06/2024 12:22

I don't believe you've put on a stone. That would be almost impossible in a week. Could it be water retention? Alcohol can make you dehydrated which in turn maybe means your body is holding on to extra fluids. Or could you be constipated?
I often find I'm heavier after a holiday but the pounds come off very quickly in a week or ten days which makes me feel it wasn't extra fat I was carrying.

Just a thought - were you in a hot country/did you fly? If so, you may be like me and have a ton of water on board. My ankles swell like crazy as soon as I go on a plane and then spend time in the heat. Takes a few days to settle when I get home.

Choux · 03/06/2024 14:00

I got back from holiday on Friday and, once back on my usual food choices, lost 5lbs in 48 hours. Restaurant food is higher in salt which causes water retention. Not sure what carbs, sugar and alcohol do to water retention but a lot of the gain won't be lasting.

Are the scales correct? Guessing you didn't take your scales from home so maybe just a different reading?

Chickatease · 03/06/2024 14:24

I've just got back from a week in the US and have put on 2kg (pretty happy with this actually I ate like a pig) but not too worried, this always happens after a holiday. By Friday I'll be nearly back to normal but will have to work at shifting the last 0.5kg or so. Sometimes if it's an all I inclusive holiday I can put on ,4kg in a week, it's not fat though

I weighted myself when I got home - this morning (got back last night)

Thanks everyone - salt and booze seem the culprits - I appreciate the reassurance

I reckon it's the cocktails adding up

Were they creamy style ones

No, I don't like those - but many were rum based which is pure sugar 😂

I think I ate the sameish calories but I did have more sandwich type things which are higher in salt I think. I do not know, it is a mystery but I am counting pinging back to some extend as pp suggest

I meant same as in same calories 500-800 on the menu. My breakfast was identical. I am obviously not as technically skilled as many in this group which is why I am asking for help. Thanks

Can I recommend listening to this: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/ep-269-getting-your-head-around-the-scales/id1360394675?i=1000528572115 There are SO many things that influence the scale weight and if things are as you say, it's unlikely that the vast majority of the weight is actually fat. I think just get straight back on what you were doing before and you'll be making progress again.

If you’ve kept it off this long I seriously think there’s anything you’ve done that would warrant it- I’m voting scales issue!!!

My evening meals on holiday were no larger or more indulgent than at home, is what I was trying to say.

Where did you go ?
Restaurants will use more oil for example.
Also salt , makes you hang on to water.

a mix of cafes and also lots of 'fixed things rather than cooked from scratch so they will be higher in salt, if not calories.
