WTF is going on with my weight!

I worked VERY hard to lose a stone Sept - May. I was eating only fruit and yogurt for breakfast and a normal evening meal. I have been away for a week and ate my normal small breakfast, a small lunch with no carbs - eg a salad or soup and normal evening meal, then 2 glasses of wine or 1 cocktail 1 wine a day. I have put the whole stone back on. How the fuck? Is it the wine? I am so confused :(

It doesn't matter what caused it really, does it? I don't think your recent calorie intake sounds sufficient, and in these instances your body can go into starvation mode and hang on to everything it's given. Calories are also defunct...

But, as others suggest, give yourself a week and then see what happens. I'm pretty sure you will bounce back quickly too

User1979289 · 03/06/2024 18:48

@fettybord that was my fear - that I have reduced calories too much and caused issues. I am not very overweight at all but it has a significant health impact if I am so I am fighting it!
I am going to check again each morning and see what happens this week. And maybe buy some new scales 😂

I only have a 100-200 calorie breakfast. I find if I do not share a meal with my family in the evening I feel very deprived. I do a very small breakfast at 6.30am and then nothing except water/tea until 7.30pm when I have dinner means I feel a lot happier! It worked to lose the initial weight, I am shocked how quickly it came back.

So your normal day involves eating 2 meals a day?
if you were eating lunch as well as breakfast and dinner and drinking alcohol on holiday thats how you've put the weight back on.
Are you doing exercise?

Meanwhile33 · 03/06/2024 19:05

Can you have the same meal as your family but minus the carbs? So cauliflower rice for you, normal rice for the others, you skip the bread, etc. No starchy carbs and no dairy is the only thing that works for me now, I used to be able to lose weight easily but now I have to make changes or my weight will just carry on creeping up and up and up. It helps if you can get out of the deprived mindset - it’s just maths, and it’s very likely you need fewer calories than the rest of the family unless your kids are little. I’ve had to come to terms with it and it doesn’t bother me now - it almost helps that my 14yo can eat huge quantities of food and stay skinny, so it’s just obvious our bodies need different things right now.

hby9628 · 03/06/2024 19:13

Yep same here although I did eat more carbs & have more alcohol but I didn't eat loads of desserts etc
It happens to me every time I go on hols. It's tedious
Agree with previous poster though. Lots of fluid, healthy food & you'll lose half of that quickly.
Good luck.

easilydistracted1 · 03/06/2024 19:15

Have you read the gousto small print that says that the calories are prior to the additions like oil, flour etc which they rely on you providing? I also think you've underestimated the alcohol calories. However it really wouldn't be that extreme I'm sure a lot is the impact of such a major change in diet

Beautiful3 · 03/06/2024 19:35

Its a combination of water weight, alcohol and less movement.

Massively appreciate this - I had not clocked that and have been relying on their calorie guide. Thanks so much

You are absolutely spot on - I need very few calories - I am very short and 50. DH is 6 foot 6 and extremely active, both DC very lean naturally and again, very active.
That is a very good idea re carbs and I will incorporate this. Thanks so much.
I just really love a shared family meal - it is teh highlight of every day and I do not want to lose it :)

Usually I have a lot of animals I look after and have an active busy job. I only do formal exercise for an hour a week. I need to have a rethink :)

Many years ago I went to Weight Watchers and the leader was on holiday for a couple of weeks and then she wasn't allowed back because she'd put 22 lbs on!

Yes I’m the same, it’s miserable if they’re having something yummy and you’re sulking your way through a boring salad! What works for us is making sure every evening meal is based on protein & veggies with an optional carb on the side that the others can fill up on. So things like roasted salmon & roasted veg, with potatoes on a separate tray, or a huge stir fry with noodles separate. I’m finding by cutting out the carbs completely I can afford the calories for enough olive oil to make roasted veggies taste nice, or to put coconut milk in a curry, so everything I am eating tastes good and is enjoyable. The downside is it can get expensive, but upside is everyone ends up eating more veg.

6lb had disappeared at 6am this morning so a combo of things. I am taking @Meanwhile33 advice on board.
I suddenly realised driving home that I had been drinking 2-3 coffees a day (cappuccino) instead of my usual tea which will have added another 200cals at least!
This has been very very useful. Thank you everyone - massive appreciate the help

My sister in law dropped and kept weight off when she dropped alcohol altogether and did weight training

Meanwhile33 · 04/06/2024 12:44

Well done, that’s very encouraging! And yes milky coffees have a surprising amount of calories - it’s more like 150 calories per cappuccino, more with full fat milk, so that alone could be what caused it. Another good rule is don’t drink your calories, so no juice or sweet drinks, only a splash of milk in coffee and tea, and no alcohol. It’s not forever.

BuggeryBumFlaps · 04/06/2024 12:47

You won't have put a stone back on, you'd have had to eat 42'000 calories over and above your maintenance calories (2000 a day).

3000 calories over and above your maintenance = 1lb

You'll probably find that after 2 days you'll loose a load. It's probably salt/water retention and the fact you're body is used to weighing empty.

AllAboutTheTent · 04/06/2024 13:17

I've had a few heavy weekends (think girls weekend/hen do). In a row. Was horrified by the scales.

Had a very sensible back to normal weekend & almost back to normal.

16th May to today was up by 0.5 kg. Not the 3kg the scales had previously said.

The female body is a remarkable thing eh? Mystifying and confusing.
I am now 2lb heavier than on 20/5 so that seems likely the gain. Thanks everyone
