Losing a couple of kg support thread

GetYourHandOut · 28/04/2024 15:36

I'm blaming the shite weather rather than the biscuits but I'm still in my winter phase and am at the top end of my usual weight range.

I'd like to lose a couple of kg to feel more comfortable and confident as summer (hopefully) approaches.

Does anyone want to join me for a support and accountability thread?

Sounds good @Defrump , very organised!

@GetYourHandOut hope you're doing ok, half term with kids is hard.

I think I'm still at a slight deficit, though doubt it's enough to see a loss this week. Been feeling a bit depressed/out of sorts as it's my last week in my job and though I'm excited about the next one it wasn't really my choice to leave and I don't do well with changes of routine. It's meant that I've eaten more convenience food or bought lunch out, oddly enough it seems like my calorie totals have been fairly low still, albeit with more margin for error in the tracking as I've had to guess a few things.

I'm off work next week and am quite optimistic because I tend to eat better when I've got more time, as well as not being stuck at a desk!

Quicknamechange1234567 · 31/05/2024 10:40

Want to shift 6kg in six weeks. Illness means I can't exercise much and am on horrible meds for weight gain. Will try to get back to gentle yoga and pilates every day. Going to have to cut out all rubbish from my diet, of which there isn't much.

Proteinpud · 31/05/2024 11:43

@Quicknamechange1234567 what do you mean by meds for weight gain?
6kg in six weeks doesn't sound very realistic unless you're someone who is starting from being extremely overweight/eating very high calories which it doesn't sound like you are

Quicknamechange1234567 · 31/05/2024 12:02

Meds that cause weight gain - steroids, hoping to reduce the dose which could help weight loss. I wrote meds for causing weight gain, must have accidentally deleted or had a weird autocorrect. Not massively overweight, just into the overweight band with BMI, but it is much more than I weight before steroids.

GetYourHandOut · 31/05/2024 16:21

@Proteinpud I hope your last day in your job has gone ok. Be gentle with yourself. Change can be hard and moving jobs is a huge one.

Thanks @GetYourHandOut I'm actually quite happy with how it's gone as although I've not eaten as well as before, it hasn't been excessive - certainly less than on a bad day before I started tracking.

@Quicknamechange1234567 it can be really hard losing weight on steroids, as I'm sure you're already aware - are you able to get any advice from your GP?

SaggyOldClothDog · 31/05/2024 19:35

Well, I reckon my weekly average should be down this week - I was 71kg on Monday and 69.5kg today.🎉

All I needed to do was spend Wednesday night with my head down the toilet 🤮 and most of Thursday dozing on the sofa, with only a bit of toast and banana as sustenance.

Still, I'm trying to turn it into a positive and aiming to break the snacking habit before my appetite comes back properly 🤣

GetYourHandOut · 01/06/2024 09:41

@SaggyOldClothDog 🤢
I hope you feel better soon!

I'm 1 kg up from last weekend which is to be very much expected after the amount of eating I've done over half term!

Had dinner out (a massive pie and chips 🤤) last night but that's the last of the eating/social events for a bit.

Thanks. Not really any GP advice, they said weight gain apparently inevitable. It hasn't been a huge amount, but noticeable. Making a real effort now to not eat unhealthy snacks that I suddenly crave for the first time.

I know someone who did try to diet/not gain weight and got stomach burns, which caused terrible problems. What I have done is flip my meals and eat a large breakfast to try to avoid stomach issues.

Proteinpud · 01/06/2024 21:10

@GetYourHandOut how did you get on today? Sounds like you've not done too badly given a 1kg change after a week off?

@Quicknamechange1234567 appreciate this might not be the same thing - I have previously had medication that 'caused' weight gain, though the mechanism was very simple, a side effect was increased appetite and sugar craving. I tried just about to manage it by eating high volume low calorie food (lots of veg, berries for snacks) as eating less just wasn't feasible. Have you tried any particular strategies so far? Or do you think it might be a case of having to wait until your health improves/meds are reduced?

I've decided I'll be happy this week if I maintain because I've got some PBs in the gym, and if I'm getting stronger then that's good in the long run.

RamaSita · 01/06/2024 23:03

Just caught up since before half term, so great to read people's progress and also solidarity with those who've gained a little thanks to Half term - I'm in the latter camp, weighed this morning and up 1kg. Ah well. I'm now also feeling ill with a virus which has had an unhelpful effect on the foods I've craved and my willpower levels! Not beating myself up though. If I don't throw the towel in altogether I will get back on track. Grateful for this thread to help with that Biscuit

GetYourHandOut · 02/06/2024 17:44

Well done on the PBs @Proteinpud 💪 Getting stronger is amazing! What's your lift of choice? I love a back squat or a deadlift.

@RamaSita I hope you feel better soon 🤞🏻. Welcome to the 1kg up club 😂

I've been hungry today - probably the result of a big workout and being a bit premenstrual.

OP posts:
Proteinpud · 02/06/2024 18:06

I might be joining you in that club, given my afternoon involved a burger, several slices of pizza (that was more goats cheese than pizza) and a brownie! Was out for the afternoon at a local event so it was outdoor food stalls. I made a conscious choice to go and enjoyed it.

@GetYourHandOut I'm following a programme which is currently focused on deadlifts, and they are one I enjoy. It wasnt the heaviest I've lifted, but it was a higher number of reps for a weight that isn't far off my max, so it felt good! Squats are my nemesis. The other PB I got was for one armed row, and that's one thing I think I'm stronger with because there's a crossover with jiu jitsu. I'd spent the morning doing jiu jitsu sparring so I was very hungry and really enjoyed the food this afternoon!

Proteinpud · 03/06/2024 08:19

....And the effects of yesterday appear on the scales, weighing in at 1kg+ and 1% higher bodyfat. Oh well! Hoping some of that is fluctuation, doing a food shop later so will stock up on healthy food for the week!

GetYourHandOut · 03/06/2024 08:27

@Proteinpud one of the things I love about lifting is that I'm only in competition with myself. I get so excited when I managed one more rep or a couple more KG on the bar.

Well done to those of us wrangling children last week. Half term is done!

It's Monday, it's sunny (here at least), let's get this week started off well 💪

Proteinpud · 03/06/2024 08:31

@GetYourHandOut agree with that, not naturally gifted in sports so team sports never appealed - as you don't want to let the team down - but strength training feels completely different.

And yes, congrats to everyone who got through half term, commiserations to anyone who has two weeks of it!

SmallestSheepdogforTeenySheep · 03/06/2024 08:50

Hello everyone. You’re just what I need. I hope it’s okay to join now, not having been in it from the beginning?

I was 9st 7lb after having put on a stone, and half of that being in a few years. Perimenopause to menopause. I’d been the same weight fur ever and had a wardrobe of clothes I’d had for ever.

I am aiming for 9st. I just want to get into the new clothes I had to buy due to the weight gain.

I find it almost impossible not to go for the sweet things at night. I’m also finding it difficult to have the time and money to exercise.

Thanks for having me.

SaggyOldClothDog · 03/06/2024 08:59

That's me! But down to one child this week so in theory should be bit more low key (can't do anything too extravagant or DC who's back in school won't be impressed 😂). Having said that, I do have a some food related socials to look forward to (a couple of birthdays and a catch-up lunch with friends 🤦 - there will definitely be cake and cocktails involved at various points!).

Weekly average for last week dropped from 71.2kg to 70.4kg - mostly down to being ill. I've being keeping to smaller portions and trying to eat gut friendly foods since, so hopefully I can keep this up.🤞

2 months to holiday time to go!!

RamaSita · 03/06/2024 11:25

Welcome @SmallestSheepdogforTeenySheep !
Your plans sound fun @SaggyOldClothDog and I'm sure you'll find a happy medium of indulging somewhat without going mad.

Having weighed myself mid week and seen the 1kg spike it's since settled back down so that's a relief and I do seem to still be chipping away slowly. Being ill I'm eating a bit less but have also had ice cream (for my sore throat you understand) and Jaffa cakes (vitamin C) so we'll see.

Lost 2.2kg so far and it's been 4 weeks. Had a mini goal of 71kg for today and am 71.8 so will pat myself on the back for that. The accountability of this thread definitely helping!

BogRollBOGOF · 03/06/2024 12:44

👋 Waves hello.
Very similar to SmallestSheepdog here.
My scales have gradually crept up to 10st in the last couple of years, and my clothes are objecting. I had been about 9st 3 prior to 2020 and not securely got back there since. Getting under 9st 7 would be a good start. At 5'2" this is easier said than done. While I don't gain weight rapidly and my body does not like giving it away.

I've realised as the DCs get older that I'm walking several miles less per week now I don't have squillions of school runs for them. Plus I have a teenager who's on a mission to mutate into a beige carb. He's fine in his lanky youthfulness, but youthful hormones have departed this body.

So my intentions are:
*Drink more water (it's taken forever for this spring to warm up and reset this habit)
*Eat 30 plants per week (this will reduce simple carbs and encourage filling up on good nutrition)
*10,000 steps per day (encouraging more general movement)
*Exercise breaks- I already excercise a lot and have a half marathon at the end of the month. The idea is to put little, modest bursts of movement in more often to replace some lost walking but not overdo intensity and increase injury risk.

My diet's already decent and I'm already active so I'm at the limits of what can be changed easily and naturally. I'm making the most of DH being away for a couple of weeks and motivated start of my cycle to get started. Plus I've done an A5 log for the week to prompt me. Oh and a new air fryer that's still in novelty phase 😂

Defrump · 03/06/2024 17:07

54.9kg this morning!
And done a walk and 30 mins of hula hooping
Yayyy

SmallestSheepdogforTeenySheep · 03/06/2024 17:44

Thanks for having me. I’m starting off small by not going to the biscuit table at work and not snacking, too much, in the evening. I’m going to allow myself equivalent to a Freddo Frog of an evening rather than eating the whole pack.

I am eating a handful of nuts and an apple and full fat yogurt during the day which means I don’t get hungry and my blood sugar doesn’t go mad.

I was trying to hula hoop but our flat isn’t big enough so I can only do it outside if the weathers good!

I feel really bloated as I’m on progesterone.

I need to lose 7lbs or half a stone or 3 kg. Half a stone sounds a lot but I don’t understand kg.

Proteinpud · 03/06/2024 22:00

@SmallestSheepdogforTeenySheep and @BogRollBOGOF welcome!

Freddo's are also a choice of snack here, trying to switch to chocolate that has an obvious portion size rather than a large bar I can keep going back to.

Today has ended up being 1600 calories, 17,000 steps, strength training in the morning and capoeira in the evening. I think I was sustained by all the extra food I ate yesterday! Amazing the difference a day off can make to activity levels, when not stuck at a desk.

@Defrump congratulations on your progress!

Defrump · 04/06/2024 09:25

Thank you @Proteinpud

Back to rain here ugh

Eyesopenwideawake · 04/06/2024 09:56

Yay - finally ticked down to 63.1kg!
