Losing a couple of kg support thread

GetYourHandOut · 28/04/2024 15:36

I'm blaming the shite weather rather than the biscuits but I'm still in my winter phase and am at the top end of my usual weight range.

I'd like to lose a couple of kg to feel more comfortable and confident as summer (hopefully) approaches.

Does anyone want to join me for a support and accountability thread?

Well done @Eyesopenwideawake!

I am back from my weekend away and weighing in the same as before I left. I ate a bit more but didn't go mad, and I walked a lot.

And now I am ready to repeat what I have just done ie 2.5kg down in 4 weeks. I hit 62.5kg before I left and would LOVE to get to 59.9kg for my beach holiday in early July. Here goes!

Welcome new joiners!

Hope you feel better soon @SaggyOldClothDog

@GetYourHandOut how did you get on today? Sounds like you've not done too badly given a 1kg change after a week off?

@Quicknamechange1234567 appreciate this might not be the same thing - I have previously had medication that 'caused' weight gain, though the mechanism was very simple, a side effect was increased appetite and sugar craving. I tried just about to manage it by eating high volume low calorie food (lots of veg, berries for snacks) as eating less just wasn't feasible. Have you tried any particular strategies so far? Or do you think it might be a case of having to wait until your health improves/meds are reduced?

I've decided I'll be happy this week if I maintain because I've got some PBs in the gym, and if I'm getting stronger then that's good in the long run.

Trying something similar - going to aim for a lot of fresh veg. Craving rubbish from the meds. Trying to cut that out. But if it is a matter of protecting my stomach (if it is sore or I left some time before taking meds - school morning chaos, etc) I will eat a yoghurt and prioritise that over weight loss.

BogRollBOGOF · 05/06/2024 12:37

Day 3 and impatience hasn't got the better of me yet. 😂 Grilled halloumi and mediteranean veg currently cooking for lunch.

Currently totted up 27/ 30 plants for the week.

Trying to keep the focus on keeping sugar and beige carbs down. If nothing else, I'm eating nutritious food. Really I'd like to be back in the 9st zone by my race at the end of the month which should be viable.

Keeping a tick sheet/ tally chart in the kitchen is helping so at least there's some gratification that way.

Nc4dis · 05/06/2024 15:29

Can I join?

I have put on about 3kg since getting underactive thyroid. I eat pretty healthy and do not crave/eat UPF, but my weakness is late night eating. I cannot get to sleep unless I’ve JUST eaten something. So I’ll have leftovers from dinner just before I brush my teeth, go to bed, then lie in bed for half an hour and all I can think about is that gnawing feeling in my stomach. I then get up and eat 1-3 slices of toast and then immediately get to sleep. I’ve basically trained myself so I can’t fall asleep without it 😫

I’m going to try and wean myself off it, or switch to boiled eggs/protein as my midnight snack. Wish me luck!!! I need to shed these 3kg that have gone straight to my belly, as I’m going to Ibiza at the end of the month, pool parties galore….

Proteinpud · 05/06/2024 16:31

Today started with protein yogurt, strawberries and blueberries for breakfast... Then somehow diverted to a whole tube of pringles at lunch 😬
Genuinely not sure what happened there, I do have a penchant for them occasionally but can honestly say I've never eaten a whole tub in one sitting! Not ideal. Think I can limit the damage by steak and green veg for tea. I have healthy food sat in the fridge and I've been home all day so there was no excuse!

The last few days have been pretty good though, still around 1700. Still not sure if that's enough to lose (as I'm still averaging 1850 when including weekend meals out) but it's still lower than I used to eat for sure. Don't feel I can go any lower without it affecting my energy/activity.

SmallestSheepdogforTeenySheep · 05/06/2024 18:03

Oh gosh @Proteinpud , so similar here. I had pickles, tomato’s, cheese and apples. Then 8 cherry liqueurs and a chocolate croissant. Why?

Proteinpud · 05/06/2024 18:32

@SmallestSheepdogforTeenySheep appreciate the solidarity! Usually if I go off track it's a very conscious 'fuckit' moment, this wasn't. I have been feeling a bit run down the last few days so that might be why I didn't get bored of the carbs and salt! Oh well! Back on track now!

I can see the temptation of a croissant, not sure I could stomach cherry liqueurs though!

SmallestSheepdogforTeenySheep · 05/06/2024 18:46

I’d imagine it’s the msg in the Pringles. It’s designed to make you keep eating them.

Cherry Liquors before 4 is just all kinds of wrong.

Welcome @Nc4dis

@BogRollBOGOF I like that idea of tracking the 30 different things per week. I know I eat a fair number per day but there are a lot of repeats! What is included, just fruit and veg?

BogRollBOGOF · 05/06/2024 22:47

everycowandagain · 05/06/2024 21:13

Welcome @Nc4dis

@BogRollBOGOF I like that idea of tracking the 30 different things per week. I know I eat a fair number per day but there are a lot of repeats! What is included, just fruit and veg?

Any plants in a fairly natural form, so includes wholegrains, spices and herbs.
I've been tallying where I've had multiple portions too, otherwise you start wearing a bit thin in the second half of the week.

I may have overdone smoothies today. In good news it's just oat milk, frozen berries and cocoa. I've probably drunk today's run back Blush but at least it is good nutrition and still keeps a good chunk of the fibre. I'm blaming DS who's got into them. The frozen berries make it go like a slushie.

I've kept off junkier nibbles though. Although did have to restock DS1's Hob Nobs today. Bloody ravenouse teenage twigs. Why do they have to hit that mode as female hormones mature???

The only other sweet thing I've had is one of my little bars of Aldi Mosser Roth dark chocolate. I keep those in for me as they do hit the spot quite well and aren't moreish.

I find it awkward cutting back while balancing the nutritional demands of running as I need enough energy to run and recover.

It's been a good day though. 15 000 steps done. Yesterday was under but the strength class I do doesn't show as steps so there is hidden activity there.

RamaSita · 05/06/2024 23:15

Had a very beige lunch today and followed dinner with an ice cream bar so not ideal. Sounds like a few of us slipping up but then again it's got to be a sustainable set of habits. The denial / craving thing is so strong for me.

Now I'm feeling less ill I will top up the healthy food supplies, do some meal prep and get off my bum!

Nc4dis · 06/06/2024 08:23

I did double the chicken though as 1 breast between 2 is a bit stingy, plus my husband is a rugby player….

Proteinpud · 06/06/2024 09:05

That does look nice @Nc4dis, always on the look out for good chicken recipes. Agree that one chicken breast between two is low though, would be daft to skimp on lean chicken if trying to lose weight!

Re yesterday's Pringlefest; although I record my weight weekly, I weigh myself daily just to keep an eye on the trend so that I don't stress over a fluctuation. Was prepared for a jump up due to water weight from the carbfest, and the scales showed the lowest weight so far. Aware that it might still show up later but god this thing is hard to fathom at times!

GetYourHandOut · 06/06/2024 17:22

Ha! @Proteinpud
Isn't that just typical! Clearly the tube of Pringles was just the healthy boost your body needed 😂

I'm dropping down again after the half term gain. So I'm feeling back on my usual eating regimen.

OP posts:
BogRollBOGOF · 07/06/2024 07:42

Scales were bang on 10st this morning. Probably just shifting of bloating, but it's a positive start anyway. So far it's been an on-plan week for food and exercise and leaving my tally sheet in the kitchen with a pen is helping.

Lunch is sorted already, leftovers from last night's fajitas.

Proteinpud · 07/06/2024 10:48

@GetYourHandOut maybe I'll start a new diet book, with pringles as the magic to weightloss! Glad you're getting back to things after half term

@BogRollBOGOF sounds like you're off to a good start!

I'm still tracking and still finding it difficult to get my average intake down, every time I think I've cracked it I find an extra snack or a meal out bumps it back up! Activity has been good, one jiu jitsu class, two capoeira, two strength training sessions and more over the weekend. I'm away next week, though quite a healthy holiday of walking & cycling, so hoping that will be a good break without putting on hopefully.

SaggyOldClothDog · 07/06/2024 11:53

I think for anything to be sustainable long term, there has to be a bit of wriggle room for some cheeky treats. The trick is to make sure that the cheeky treats don't happen too often (a trick I'd love to learn! 🤣)

I've got a couple more days to go then it's back to the usual routine (hopefully without the work related stress eating).

Eating hasn't been particularly disciplined over half term (and I'm just on my way out for lunch!) so I'll be happy if I can keep my average for the week down below 71kg.

I also haven't been quite as active this week, as I've been getting stuck into some long overdue DIY (and while it undoubtedly burns some calories it's knackered my step count).

We just need to keep on keeping on. Even if the scales don't shift as much as we'd like, a few more healthy habits will still make a difference long term.

everycowandagain · 07/06/2024 11:53

@Proteinpud does the flavour of Pringles matter or can I lose weight eating any flavour?

Proteinpud · 07/06/2024 12:24

@SaggyOldClothDog agreed. At the moment I'm at 1700 or under most days and then have 2 days that are 2000+ estimated, though that's having two larger/nicer meals, not going crazy all weekend. I don't think I'd want the sacrifices that would come with going lower than that if I'm honest. I am keen to see if it results in any changes to body composition over time, so I might take some photos again soon. I have thought about reverse dieting but given I've been strength training for a while and I'm in my forties I'm a bit dubious about whether that's realistic or a fitness myth! Maybe id get advice from a professional if I consider that route. For now I'll keep going, as my diet is certainly better than it used to be.

@everycowandagain so far my research has only been with original flavour, but I may experiment with a greater range in future!

everycowandagain · 07/06/2024 13:09

@SaggyOldClothDog I keep my food calories the same 7 days/week but now that I have dropped them quite low I have a couple of glasses of wine on top of that 2 days/week. As you say, it doesn't need to be completely miserable. I can't/am not prepared to eat less on those days to accommodate the wine calories and I enjoy the weekend glass of wine so I am fine with calories being slightly higher on those days. It has to be sustainable.

@Proteinpud happy to participate in research for your diet book but not the green ones, yuk! I will volunteer for the bbq or salt and vinegar test group!!

RamaSita · 07/06/2024 23:42

Just hopping on to pat myself on the back for the change in some of my habits over the past month. Sometimes having just a small taste of something instead of mindlessly eating handfuls of it. No longer relying on cuppa and copious chocolate in front of the TV of an evening. Declining treats DH has bought. Not finishing the last of the food because it's there, instead just eating what I need. Trying hard to eat protein at every meal (vegetarian and a carb fan).
I still eat plenty of foods that are faaar removed from your classic diet foods list, but with some moderation applied, ie less of it on the plate and less often. It's a relief to get a handle on things really.

GetYourHandOut · 08/06/2024 07:50

That's great @RamaSita!

OP posts:
GetYourHandOut · 08/06/2024 08:00

I'm back down to the weight I was before half term so 2kg off since we started this thread.

This is definitely my "happy weight". My clothes fit well.

I'd like to lose 0.5-1kg if I can, to give myself some wriggle room. But if I can stay at the bottom end of the 64kgs, then that'd be great.

Oh, and I'be got a social weekend ahead of me with drinks out tonight and then family visiting tomorrow. I need to not overdo it tonight! 🥂
