So confused by weight/dress size

So I've probably not lost the weight in the healthiest of ways. I've been horrifically ill and have lost 28kg since last October. I've gone down from 128.8kg to 100.6kg. I can't begin to explain how excited I am to see the double digits on that scale!

I'm 162cm, at my heaviest I was wearing size 20/22. I'm now a size 16, but these jeans are falling down on me and I think I need to head down to a 14.

Looking at other threads, women who have been 15+ stone and a similar height to me have been wearing 20/22, if not more. Those sizes absolutely drown me and so I'm wondering where the hell I'm hiding all this weight! Did someone leave some rocks in my pockets?

It's definitely not muscle gain, I've been sat on my ass this past 6 months. Am I just delirious thinking I'm smaller than I am? I've had to throw my size 18s out as I could fit both arms down the sides of them!

Has anyone else had similar where their weight really doesn't match how they look/their size?

I'm the same weight as you and just a tiny bit taller, and my wardrobe is size 14-16. Never needed an 18. I carry my weight pretty evenly, and whilst I fully recognise that I'm too fat right now, I do believe people when they say that they are surprised I'm so heavy. Some people definitely have heavy insides!

Clothes sizes are pretty crazy these days, so many garments are designed to be oversized.
How many centimetres is your waist? I'm 5ft 4, 11st 5 and a size 14.

I'm 5ft 5 and 13st and a size 14.
I find it fascinating how our bodies are all so different 😄

EasterBunnny · 18/03/2024 17:14

I find in the cheaper shops such as Primark, Matalan and Peacocks the sizes come up quite a bit bigger than other shops.

It totally depends - I'm 5ft 2, weigh just over 9 stone (59kg) and wear size 8-10. At 13 stone I was in size 14. I've obviously got heavy bones!

Are heavy bones actually a thing? I've always been told 'big boned' is just an insult to take the mick out of larger people 🙁 your weights and sizes sound similar to mine!

5 ft 7, 71 kg size 16-18

35965a · 18/03/2024 17:18

I think some people are just naturally more dense and have a more solid muscle mass

EasterBunnny · 18/03/2024 17:18

How can this beeee?! I've always wondered why I'm so heavy cause I look like I should weigh more around 70/80kg!

I weigh 70kg and my friend weighs 100kg, there’s no way you would think she weighs the same as me.

Frames do vary. There's a rough simple test with your thumb and forefinger, unless you're really fat. If they overlap, you've got a small frame and should probably be at the lower end of the bmi range. My thumb and finger don't meet because I've got a large frame/ big bones, which is why I have a higher healthy end bmi even at a lowish fat %.

Would you say the 14-16 is a good, comfortable fit too? It's frustrating to be so heavy at, what I'd deem, a normal size as doctors are always so so harsh. Definitely heavy insides! Amazing how people can be so different.

What's the test? Sorry, instructions not clear! 😂 I'm definitely hoping to lose the same weight again as I'm nowhere near a healthy weight, but I think if I go anywhere below 65kg again I'm going to look really unhealthily thin

I have always wondered if it is body proportions that make all the difference? Eg, if you have a long body and short legs, you would probably weigh much more than someone with a short body and very long legs (maybe especially long calves). Sadly I have a very long body, and short legs, so have always weighed more than I look like I weigh… it is also another reason why bmi is not a particularly accurate measure I think…

StamppotAndGravy · 18/03/2024 17:42

Just put your thumb and forefinger round your wrists in an ok sign. Do they meet? Meeting=average, overlapping=small, not meeting=large

LaWench · 18/03/2024 17:45

I'm 5'4 and last year at 15st I was a solid size 20, now I'm 13st I'm a size 16, can get in a size 14 in certain clothes with stretch. I'm a fat hourglass so can get away with small waist but big bum and boobs, I need a bigger size to get over them.

It’s middle finger, not forefinger.

MattDamon · 18/03/2024 18:04

Sizes mean nothing these days. Go by your actual waist/hip measurements.

EasterBunnny · 18/03/2024 18:10

OP what are your measurements?

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 18/03/2024 18:13

This definitely true. I am 95kg, heaviest I've ever been atm, and am wearing size 18 at the same height.
In photos I look a good size 24. 😩

Ah! No, they don't meet... so I can say I'm confidently big boned haha

I am 5'5 and weigh about 78kg which I think is around 12st 3 ? I am size 14 however everyone thinks I am a lot thinner than I am.
I've lost a few pounds recently and until that I was in the obese category but I don't think I look obese. I think I've always weighed heavier on the scales than I look.

I'm not sure, I'll dig out a tape measure if I've got one and post them

I think it's true that the camera always adds weight! Plus, no one ever takes the good angles

OP posts:
VeryStressedMum · 18/03/2024 18:33

And also my thumb and middle meet around my wrist with a slight overlap so I don't think my bones are overly large.

EasterBunnny · 18/03/2024 18:39

I have a 1.5 cm gap doing the wrist test, as in my thumb and middle finger don’t meet. I have quite wide shoulders and hips and a smallish waist.

EasterBunnny · 18/03/2024 18:40

The camera adds about three chins in my photos!
