So confused by weight/dress size

So I've probably not lost the weight in the healthiest of ways. I've been horrifically ill and have lost 28kg since last October. I've gone down from 128.8kg to 100.6kg. I can't begin to explain how excited I am to see the double digits on that scale!

I'm 162cm, at my heaviest I was wearing size 20/22. I'm now a size 16, but these jeans are falling down on me and I think I need to head down to a 14.

Looking at other threads, women who have been 15+ stone and a similar height to me have been wearing 20/22, if not more. Those sizes absolutely drown me and so I'm wondering where the hell I'm hiding all this weight! Did someone leave some rocks in my pockets?

It's definitely not muscle gain, I've been sat on my ass this past 6 months. Am I just delirious thinking I'm smaller than I am? I've had to throw my size 18s out as I could fit both arms down the sides of them!

Has anyone else had similar where their weight really doesn't match how they look/their size?

Weight is weird though.
I remember at one point a few years ago my sister was 2 stone heavier than me but in a smaller clothes size. I mean I couldn't even get something on that was loose on her and neither of us booby in the slightest.

unsync · 18/03/2024 19:23

You probably have a dense skeleton and good muscle coverage.

I think it's true that the camera always adds weight! Plus, no one ever takes the good angles

The camera adds about three chins in my photos!

Hahaha!

That is very strange! Did you have the same figure type and build too?

I think I've always been heavier, even when I didn't look 'fat'. I remember going for my sea medical check and the doctor said I was over the weight allowance, but looked absolutely fine so he wasn't concerned.

I'm 5'3 about 73kg and size 12-14 (mainly 14 at the moment). At 100kg I'd definitely be wearing a bigger size than a 16

Harrysmummy246 · 18/03/2024 20:58

174cm, 82kg, size 12-24 depending on brand. Definitely heavier than people think looking at me but I've always been quite 'broad' and do carry muscle as I have a physical job
Definitely overweight on BMI but when I actually was 'healthy weight ', I apparently looked too thin, both when incredibly fit and when not at all fit but too stressed to eat.

Waffleswithhoney · 18/03/2024 21:18

72kg here, 5ft 6 and I wear a size 10. Sometimes a 12 on the bottom if trousers are a very slim fit. I’ve always been this way, at my heaviest I was 99kg and in a size 16-18.

In my teenage years (long time ago) I was a size 6-8 and often called ‘too skinny’ but weighed 63kg.

I do a lot of exercise though so definitely a decent amount of muscle.

HidingFromDD · 18/03/2024 21:24

5’ 3”, 11st 9 and standard size 14 (can do 12 in m&s etc). Based on bmi I’m right at the top of the overweight category but using waist/height ratio I’m only slightly above the healthy range. I do have short legs and a long body though so the person who mentioned that may be on to something

Wooloohooloo · 18/03/2024 22:46

Dress sizes are weird. I'm a size 12/14 and weigh about 11 stone 12, at 5'5". At 15 stone I was a size 20 at least.

sophiesophiesophie · 19/03/2024 06:22

I've been wondering this exact same! I'm much bigger than you. Started 123kg end of January, size 22 jeans and tops. I'm down to 111 kg now but I went shopping the other day and my usual size 22 dresses absolutely drowned me. I looked like I was wearing a curtain! Same in size 20. But size 18 was too small.. I don't see much of a difference in my apperance so wondering where this weight has come off and why my clothes dont fit lol but also I'm very happy even if I do look like I'm wearing bin bags.

The short body thing makes sense actually. I am just under 5’2”, 9st 2 and size 12. I am 5lb overweight and definitely look it. I have a big tummy (measure 36” around the tummy) but I have a 30” inside leg, which is probably why I am not heavier.

IloveAslan · 19/03/2024 07:24

It is confusing. I'm 5'7", weigh 80 kg and I'm a size 16, but often see posters the same height and weight as me in sizes 12/14.

A case in point. At 5ft 7 when I weighed 71 kgs I was a size 14 - how on earth are you a 10? (not saying you aren't, just that it is baffling that people who weigh around the same as someone else of a similar height are so different in sizes).

It’s always baffled me.

Currently, I weigh 12stone 7lbs at 5 foot 4.

I am in a size 12. A size 10-12 in supermarket pyjamas/sweatshirts and joggers.

I even wear a size 12 in bloody superdry coat.

Just bought a dress in a size 10 from simply be (although I do find their sizing generous).

My BMI is 30.2. So still obese.

My friend is the same height, same weight and is a size 16/18.

I was 9 stone all though my 20s. “Perfect” BMI. I was a size 6-8 and people used to ask if I was anorexic.

I'm exactly the same height and weight as you and a size 16 bottom and 14 top, carry a lot of weight in my belly.

Misthios · 19/03/2024 07:49

I'm slightly taller than you at about 165cm and last October was 85kg and a size 16-18. I have lost 10kg since then and now a 14.

I think everyone is different and as others have said, wear what fits you!! Different brands will fit differently - I have size 14 jeans from M&S and Costco (randomly) which fit well but probably a Hollister or Zara 14 would be too small or tight.

The main thing is your health - I hope whatever made you so unwell is better.

I find it so fascinating! When I was 72kg at 5ft 8 I was also a size 14. I keep hearing about people much shorter than me and several stone heavier being a size 10 or 12! I don't get it!! I'm not saying they're lying - it's just the variety of shapes and sizes is very interesting.
I think some people carry a lot of muscle and are heavier than they look. I have barely any muscle so any extra weight on me is pure fat.

Just put your thumb and forefinger round your wrists in an ok sign. Do they meet? Meeting=average, overlapping=small, not meeting=large

Really?! But people carry their weight differently. My thumb and finger overlap but I've always had tiny, bony wrists. My bum are thighs however are fat!
I know other women with quite thick wrists who are smaller elsewhere.

It's a measure of skeleton size, not fat distribution. You can have a small frame and plenty of padding or be a bit scrawny despite being quite wide. My skeleton would be a size 10 without any skin or fat, yours is presumably a lot smaller if you imagined the results of a fatally effective diet ;)

It depends on how much fat you’ve got over your wrists too though.

When I was 23 stone, my fingers were no where near touching over my wrists, huge gap, was way too fat. I even had to buy a different strap when I bought an Apple Watch, couldn’t get the original one on.

Now, my thumb and finger meet. when I was 9stone, they used to overlap.

anon2022anon · 19/03/2024 16:26

Hmmm, I think the long body thing could be right.
5'6.5
82kg
Size 14
Definite pear shaped with a long torso (often get camel toe in jumpsuits!). As a result, until I get to a bit heavier than this I've got a pretty flat stomach and a defined waist, and wear styles that suit a pear shape- make my waist look nipped in and skim over my hips. This probably all contributes to looking smaller.

I am 5'6.5 too and currently 73kg and just heading into a size 12 from a 14, at 82kg I am a 16, my 14's are getting tight at 78kg.

I have a friend with big wrists - she even has trouble with bangles being too tight - who is much smaller than me, and my wrists are smaller than hers. She also eats a lot of sweet stuff.

LolaJ87 · 21/03/2024 11:09

It really depends on your frame and muscles! My friend and I are within an inch in height but at the same weight she was in size 12 jeans and I was in size 14. I have much wider hips and shoulders and my weight is spread all over my bum/hips/legs, whereas any weight she gained went onto her upper body.

It's why dress sizes and BMI are only general guidelines, we are all individuals! What I'd give to be back in that size 14 body now though 😂
