So confused by weight/dress size

CinnamonSwirl82 · 18/03/2024 15:43

So I've probably not lost the weight in the healthiest of ways. I've been horrifically ill and have lost 28kg since last October. I've gone down from 128.8kg to 100.6kg. I can't begin to explain how excited I am to see the double digits on that scale!

I'm 162cm, at my heaviest I was wearing size 20/22. I'm now a size 16, but these jeans are falling down on me and I think I need to head down to a 14.

Looking at other threads, women who have been 15+ stone and a similar height to me have been wearing 20/22, if not more. Those sizes absolutely drown me and so I'm wondering where the hell I'm hiding all this weight! Did someone leave some rocks in my pockets?

It's definitely not muscle gain, I've been sat on my ass this past 6 months. Am I just delirious thinking I'm smaller than I am? I've had to throw my size 18s out as I could fit both arms down the sides of them!

Has anyone else had similar where their weight really doesn't match how they look/their size?

so about 5ft 3" and 15st 8lb (sorry I'm old school) Well yes frankly that seems a bit unfair from my point of view as I'm slightly taller and much fatter than you (size 20) 😂I'm sorry to hear how ill you've been though. Are your scales definitely accurate? I have no useful feedback for you though other than YAY 14!!

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 18/03/2024 15:56

Wear what clothes fit, don't worry so much about the numbers but i'd say you must probably weigh less than you realise. I'm about 95kg (with plenty more I'd like to come off) and still in a 20 in majority of stores
An 18 in some depending what it is. Sorry you have been so poorly.

StamppotAndGravy · 18/03/2024 15:56

Do you have a large bust? What shop are your jeans from and are they a bit stretched?

I'm 1.67m, 66kg and a 12-14 in jeans depending on shop and style, but I've got wide hips, a flat chest and big bones. It does seem very odd!

Kwasi · 18/03/2024 16:03

It does sound weird. I am 158 cm, 58kg and size 12(ish). For reference, my stats are 37” - 29” - 38”

swiveleyedconspiracyloon · 18/03/2024 16:07

I am 5ft 3
11st 11
size 16-18

😮

CinnamonSwirl82 · 18/03/2024 16:12

Yeah, you're all making me wonder even more what's going on! My scales are definitely fine as they match up with what docs have weighed me at.

I'd say I'm curvy with weight evenly spread, bar a bit of an apron belly at the front. My bust is 38DD so not huge but also not massive. I've got a small waist and larger hips. Definitely an hour glass shape.

How can this beeee?! I've always wondered why I'm so heavy cause I look like I should weigh more around 70/80kg!

At my lightest I was 65kg and a size 8-10

Jeans are from Matalan and have a little bit of stretch, but not much. I was about 5-6 inches off being able to do the button up before! Now I'm just constantly having to pull them up.

Whatdoyouseeplease · 18/03/2024 16:14

I weigh 17 stone, 5ft 9 and am a size 16-18. Massive boobs but wouldn't say I looked as big as I weigh either.

If you’re 38DD, you measure at least 42 inches around, which is size 16.

So definitely not going mental then...! So wheres this extra weight coming from 😂 wonder if my other half is sneaking his foot on the scale. He's weighing in at 67kg which is correct for him (skinny minnie) so it's definitely not broken scales!

TheWayOfTheWorld · 18/03/2024 16:39

It totally depends - I'm 5ft 2, weigh just over 9 stone (59kg) and wear size 8-10. At 13 stone I was in size 14. I've obviously got heavy bones!

mintich · 18/03/2024 16:39

I've always been the same. I'm 5'4" and even when I weighed 12 stone I was only just a 14. At size 10, I'm 9 stone 4. People my size seem to say they are 8 stone! Even aa a teenager I wondered how I was so much heavier than everyone else but tge same dress size.

The only thing I can think of is fluid retention.

My husband is your weight. He’s just shy of 6 ft. He’s got muscular legs but a big belly 😆 But I have
met people my size who weigh 8kg more but look the same.

I am the same height as you, 1kg less but a size 12. When I was 10 stone 4, so about 68kg, I was a 14-16.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 18/03/2024 16:44

@Kwasi it's so weird how it works isn't it? If I weighed less I'd start to look really gaunt and unwell - and yet according to BMi I could be another stone or 2 lighter Confused

AhBiscuits · 18/03/2024 16:46

Clothes sizes are pretty crazy these days, so many garments are designed to be oversized.
How many centimetres is your waist? I'm 5ft 4, 11st 5 and a size 14.

So weird. I am 5lb overweight and I look and feel it. My belly is huge and heavy.

DivorcedAndDelighted · 18/03/2024 16:50

Some of us have very dense bones. I'm 167cm, 67Kg and a size 10 in most stores (though a 6 in Next 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣)

bahhamburgers · 18/03/2024 16:50

It’s always baffled me.

Currently, I weigh 12stone 7lbs at 5 foot 4.

I am in a size 12. A size 10-12 in supermarket pyjamas/sweatshirts and joggers.

I even wear a size 12 in bloody superdry coat.

Just bought a dress in a size 10 from simply be (although I do find their sizing generous).

My BMI is 30.2. So still obese.

My friend is the same height, same weight and is a size 16/18.

I was 9 stone all though my 20s. “Perfect” BMI. I was a size 6-8 and people used to ask if I was anorexic.

munchmagic · 18/03/2024 16:55

It varies so much depending on body shape, where you carry your weight, genetics and probably umpteen other factors too. For reference I'm 163cm too. At 154lbs I was a size 8/10 and that was in every shop I went to (River Island, New Look, Next etc) Mumsnet would have us believe that nobody over 100lbs can possibly be less than a size 14 though. But it really does depend on the person. I am now 189lbs and a size 14- though I wear a 16 for jeans due to my c section tummy. I hope you are feeling better soon OP.

teacrumpetsandcake · 18/03/2024 16:55

Well there are a lot of variables aren't there? Weight distribution on different bodies varies hugely, you might naturally have more muscle, your bones might be denser or larger, there could be more or less of any number of chemicals/ substances which weigh different amounts in your body. We are not all the same.

Not to mention women's sizing being all over the place in different shops and even within the same shops, as well as different styles of clothing and what kind of fit you like.

Honestly? Don't overthink these numbers. They mean so little. Wear what fits.

The thing you should pay attention to are how your body feels, nutrition, your heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol, your fitness/ energy levels, etc.

anon2022anon · 18/03/2024 16:59

159cm, 82kg at last weigh in, and solid 14 here. I weigh more than I look.

Wow! You’re 2 cm taller than me, 24kg heavier and one dress size bigger. I am finding this thread so fascinating.

Sleepeazie · 18/03/2024 17:01

I’m 5. 1 and 11.8 and wear (comfortably) a 12. But I’m a gym goer and extremely active 6 days a week.

ThreeEggOmlette · 18/03/2024 17:04

Agree with @teacrumpetsandcake - I've got size 8 - 16 in my wardrobe because sizing is all made up bollocks these days, plus stretchy materials etc.
It doesn't matter, wear what fits & feels good. Focus on fitness over thinness & you're winning.

That said, I'm in the heavy bones gang. I'm strong & squat so I recon its compression 😂
