Moving on from Wegovy

I've lost 4 and a half stone on wegovy. I've gone from an obese BMI to BMI of 21. I'm so happy. It took me a year. So now I'm going to taper down and stop. Has anyone else stopped yet? I'm going to keep up the calorie counting and exercise of course to keep the weight off.

@Menora Id love to think I could do it on my own without it and the answer is who knows what would happen in the long term if I can no longer take it. But the reality is I’ve been on it well over two years, I’ve taken a break for months as literally couldn’t get the supply and the reality is I struggled. I should mention I’ve never gone above a 0.8mg dose as I’ve taken it following the guidelines of my consultant. I’ve never completely obliterated my appetite (to the point some people seem to do on here) so I take it fairly symptom free. My consultant said you should feel hunger which I do, but should allow you to make better choices. So 🤣 the answer is ive no contingency, im just taking day by day. And it’s imo not a negative mindset but rather an acceptance that obesity is a disease that I unfortunately suffer from. I eat healthily, exercise regularly and I’m a healthy weight but without the drug I struggle to maintain that

@Peridot1 it’s something I’d definitely recommend. I used get blood tests every 6 months to check thyroid and liver function (this has now been pushed out to yearly as have had no isssues bed) and feel like Ive been prescribed it in a safe manner. Obviously not everyone but some of the posts on here are worrying re taking it without any real medical advice, or with just a stone to lose. Like it’s a short term fix.

Aliflowers · 10/04/2024 12:21

And just to say if you do manage to come off it and maintain then more power to you. Honestly I wish I could be like this x

AhBiscuits · 10/04/2024 12:45

I've been on it for 20 weeks, the last 10 of those at 1mg. The side effects do get me a down a bit. I still have days of feeling quite sick but the worst one is exhaustion. I'm just so tired all the time. Cost and everything else aside, I don't want to stay on it so am preparing for coming off. I know it's going to involve strictly monitoring what I eat, doing plenty of exercise, regular weighing and taking action immediately if my weight starts to creep up. I expect it to be very difficult, I'm just fed up of feeling a bit shit all the time.
I'm 10lbs from my goal weight and am taking 7 more injections (2 x 1mg, 1 x 0.75mg, 1 x 0.5mg and 3 x 0.25mg) and going it alone after that. 🙏

Hi OP. Such great news - congratulations. Can I ask how long it took you to lose that weight. It's the same the I need to lose :(

It took me one year to lose 4 and a half stone.

I thought you had to keep on it for 2 years when you reached goal weight?

That did sound odd but maybe at the lesser 0.25 for a few months rather than cold turkey?

Or have most of you just gone off and now coping?

No my prescriber said the opposite. That I could only be on it for 2 years and the sooner I got off it the better. I went off it cold turkey but think it took about 3 weeks to completely leave my system.

While on wegovy I really worked to make lifestyle changes that I've managed to keep up. Evenings used to be awful for me with the carb cravings so I changed my routine. I no longer sit on the sofa watching TV. I have dinner later then walk the dog for an hour then keep busy with housework then do a YouTube workout and then shower then straight into bed with my teeth brushed to watch TV. I would never eat in bed so that has stopped all my after dinner eating.

I have been off it a month today and lost a further 3 pounds even though I'm trying to maintain now.

@Candyfloss99 amazing, keep going you are on a good path x

these are EXACTLY what I do too!

boatgirl81 · 10/04/2024 13:47

Have most people gone private? Is it hard to get through the NHS? My BMI is 36 and really want to make a change.

StMarieforme · 10/04/2024 13:51

Can I ask... does it stop you feeling hungry? I'm say her- working away from home- have had a cheese sandwich and a small cereal bar from the canteen- circa 500 cals, and am now more hungry than before I ate it! That gnawing ravenous hunger making it hard for me to concentrate! Does Wegovy stop that?? Thanks!

Yes, that's exactly what it does. I never feel properly hungry anymore and stay full for ages after eating a small amount.

Menora · 10/04/2024 13:53

Yes it stops you feeling as hungry. While you take it, not permanently. But eating 500 calories of very low volume foods with no protein and still being hungry at 2pm is probably normal. I would be.

Virtually impossible to get through the NHS at the moment.

It was literally straight after and hungrier than before I'd eaten it.
I struggle with bulking up with fruit and salad as it makes me need the loo all the time. Embarrassing at work and exhausting overnight!

Menora · 10/04/2024 20:29

@StMarieforme fruit and salad is not what I said, I said protein. This would be something with some kind of meat, fish, egg. Most of the calories in a cheese sandwich come from the butter, cheese and any mayo. They are lost calories that don’t give you much of anything, they don’t give you a worthwhile amount of energy. A cereal bar is just sugar. Again, do not fill you. This isn’t me being pedantic, like what I am saying is, if this is the food people are choosing whilst taking semaglutide but it filled you up, or you didn’t finish it then this still wasn’t a good choice to make, and this is where you can make improvements. Have a decent filling breakfast, take food out with you, choose something off the menu that is going to fill you up for the same calories. I ate a chicken and rice salad for 500 calories it lasted me 5 hours till I felt hungry. It’s just about making conscious choices

also do people know how the body works
you don’t satiate your hunger just by putting the food into your mouth. It takes time to reach your stomach and then there is a delay of your stomach realising there is now food present, then it needs to process it. If you eat something small very fast it will take your body longer to catch up with the food being consumed than if you eat something slowly

boatgirl81 · 11/04/2024 07:55

Thank you, do you recommend any suitable online providers. I was looking at pharmacy2u and medexpress? Worried about buying something fake.

AhBiscuits · 11/04/2024 08:03

I think those two are fine, lots of people use them. I get mine from Health Express and only good experiences.

Peridot1 · 11/04/2024 08:23

@boatgirl81 - I get mine from Boots. Asda and Superdrug also do it.

PineappleTime · 11/04/2024 08:41

I went to boots online doctor

boatgirl81 · 11/04/2024 11:59

Sorry for all the questions. Is there a orice to aim for? Medexpress for £140 seems as low as I can see it at the moment.

boatgirl81 · 11/04/2024 13:13

Sorry that should say £149.

Hi @boatgirl81 you're likely to get more answers from an active thread where people are still on Wegovy - try here http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/weightlosss_chat/5033833-continuing-wegovy-thread-3

Moving this thread back to talk of post-Wegovy life, how long did the rest of you find it took to wear off completely?

I took my last shot on Saturday 30th, and by this Tuesday evening (9th) I was getting hungry again at regular mealtimes. Before I could easily skip one and not notice! But it's been nice to be interested in food. I got a posh "street food" Thai curry last night for dinner but only managed half of it. And the last couple of spoonfuls were pushing it tbh, I was reminding myself I didn't need to eat it all just because it was expensive.

It has taken a lot longer to reconcile at the other end - not really had a normal BM yet since stopping injections.

My weight this week seems to be holding at about a pound up from my lowest weight (I'm putting this down to regularly having more food on board).

boatgirl81 · 12/04/2024 16:13

Thank you, have moved to the correct thread, thank you for your advice and good luck with your onward journeys x

I'd say it took about a month for it to completely clear my system. Though saying that I think my stomach has shrunk and now I'm much more used to eating normal size portions I feel fuller much quicker still. I've really tried hard never to overeat since I stopped so I hope I'll keep feeling full quicker. I also make sure I eat much slower than I used to.

OP posts:
Menora · 14/04/2024 19:29

I think mine wore off in 2 weeks. I also can eat a lot less in portions and get full quickly. And eating slower is important

Candyfloss99 · 20/04/2024 23:08

How is everyone getting on? I was away on holiday so thought I'd have definitely put on weight but actually I'm exactly the same as before I went away. What a win.

Hi all, some familiar user names here, how's everyone getting on? Looks like some very encouraging stories here which fills me with hope.
I'm 13 months in and yet to taper off or stop as the thought of food chatter returning scares me slightly. Still on 1.7.
BMI just over 21, still losing albeit vert slowly (1/2 pound in the past 3 weeks), eating closer to my maintenance now (1400 kcal/day) after a year of pretty aggressive deficit and losing 5 stone.
I have about 3 lbs to lose to my target, so nothing at all really. I might just stop? But I have some big events coming up in the autumn and I'd be kicking myself if I piled it back on.
