Need to lose 1 stone? Gather around....

froidIci · 17/01/2024 13:27

Not sure if this will get any clicks, but I wondered if there are folks who need to lose about a stone or a bit this way or that who might want some accountability?

BTW When I say "need to lose a stone" this means basically a stone to get to your own, individual target (which could be a random number, a random BMI point, just anything).

For me - 1 stone off takes me to weight before conceiving Baby 1, and 1.2 stone off takes me to my lightest adult weight and a very comfy size 10-12 as opposed to a size 12-14. I have added motivation that a 40th birthday tails off 2024 for me, so I've got a deadline.

My downfall? Carbs. Salty carbs. My body absolutely magically loses if I cut out rice, pasta and potatoes. And yet, alas - it specifically is those that I crave.

Anyone want a loose accountability thread?

Yay same phase as yoI but the bloating caused to me by grains is unreal. I low carb for this reason but even the slightest intake of wheat/gluten particularly absolutely finishes me off for days on end.

@Philippa7 oh that's funny we're weight twins 😆 I would absolutely love to reach 8st7lb but I haven't been that weight in about 7 years so I'm not sure if that's setting the goal posts too high for me. I'll be really pleased if I get down to 9st initially then see how I feel from there (8'13 would be even better psychologically to get back into the 8s 😂)

I know exactly what you mean about 8.13! My body shape not only weight changed so much since becoming a mum I think 8.7lb would be too low for me possibly. Let’s see how 9 stone looks and feels! Have a good day!

Philippa7 · 20/02/2024 09:16

@Twoshoesnewshoes It’s great to hear you’re in the zone!

@Scottishskifun 1lb a week is recommended to keep it off. I’d love to have a cos site t pound off weekly, You can still have some semblance of normality with a 1lb a week loss I think whereas trying to lose 3lb or something can feel properly like a hard diet.

Philippa7 · 20/02/2024 09:17

Consistent pound off*

I have to be gluten free because of bloating/pain I look about 6 months pregnant. Be aware of it in stocks, soy sauce is a culprit (tamari is gluten free) but also spice mixes!

If I was getting bad with reactions (sometimes your just triggered which then means anything can set you off) I would go back to a stripped low FODMAP diet for a week/10 days then reintroduce things 1 at a time 3 days each 1-2 days back to low fodmap to double check what was setting the reaction off further.
You can use green end of spring onions and wild garlic is also low fodmap. It's a bit early for it (generally around April) but you can blitz it put in a ice tray and freeze for cooking.

Thanks these are great ideas…

Weird but my weight has gone right down by 750 grams (!) since 6 am today and the bloated belly that was distended by 6 inches has also disappeared right down? All I have done since 6 am is - 1) drink 1 litre water in the form of peppermint teas 2) pee lots and 3) yes also use the toilet otherwise (sorry). I don’t eat breakfast and first meal of the day will be lunch.

Perhaps weighing before lunch if working from home is better for me that weighing first thing on wake up especially as my body doesn’t do it’s business till about 11 anyway!
?

Also the peppermint tea worked like magic. I don’t drink regular tea or coffee just a massive amount of decaffeinated coffee first thing at 6 so maybe replacing that with peppermint tea may help…

Ooooh I've never tried peppermint tea but I might give that a try! Any brand recommendations @froidIci or are they all much the same?

I have a theory that I might also hold onto water the day after a particularly heavy gym session. I went today and my legs are already a bit achey so I'll see what the scales do tomorrow morning...

I'm out for a big lunch and drinks on Sunday with some old friends I've not seen for months. I'm already a little nervous for how that will affect my progress but life is for living and all that!

Yes, I believe it’s down to inflammation and glycogen?

Remember unless you’re consuming 3500 calories more than what you need to maintain, you won’t gain a pound and any gain is simply water from salt, carbs, booze… Enjoy!

Digs out one of DH’s peppermint teas expecting to look like Cindy Crawford in the morning.

(Glad it’s gone down! Hope you feel much better!)

froidIci · 21/02/2024 06:34

Tetley’s fresh mint tea (2 bags for each cup to make it lovely and strong) is what I drink. Also - if you get organic/un bleached baba they also nicely flavour regular drinking water i find….

I’ve also in the past used peppermint oil capsules for bloating etc (Lindams/Holland and Barrett)…. Great comfort from them if needed!

OP posts:
froidIci · 21/02/2024 07:18

I also did some further reading around bloating etc and had peppermint tea and some ginger (if you can stomach it!) last evening and have magically arisen with a very flat belly this morning!

If nothing else participating on this thread is helping me understand my own body a lot more mindfully than I have done before! Any weight loss is a bonus :D

I went for a midweek weigh which is unusual for me 10 stone 9.5lb which is down 2lb since Sunday. I don't think I've lost 2lb more I weighed on Sunday day after period!

@froidIci your definitely right it's about learning fluctuations etc. I've learnt to leave it a few days after my period before weighing and I retain everything for a good 10 days around mine!

Swearwolf · 21/02/2024 08:23

Ooh I love a peppermint tea! I also really like the Clipper green tea with lemon.

I've also done a mid-week weigh in, and my half term of eating out has left me 0.2kg up. I'll take that, especially as my period arrived this morning. I'm just back from an early yoga class and feeling pretty good.

redavocado · 21/02/2024 10:25

Checking in because I haven't been very active on here and half term got in the way of my good intentions! I'm hovering around 12st4 at the moment, which is 4lb down with fairly minimal effort.

My snacking has improved (better choices, scheduled times to prevent binges) but I think I need to cut down on carbs and sugar to see more substantial and sustainable losses, especially as my 40s creep closer!

Strangely enough , I've started drinking a cup of fresh ginger, turmeric & cinnamon in hot water. thanks to bloody tik tok 🙄 I haven't seen my massive improvement.
I am still stuck around the same weight. I'm really annoyed as I've been good- and exercise is important to me so that's part of my normal routine.
Will keep going

Cathy31 · 21/02/2024 12:01

Sick baby, holiday, and period all combined so I've been afraid to even weigh myself this week 😂Might risk it tomorrow but I think from how my jeans feel it won't be good...

In which case..... I would strongly suggest hold off weighing, hold off, till you can feel things settling a bit. No point weighing if you already know there have been factors to swing things the other way this week - will only make you less motivated....

I think you're right @froidIci . Think I was looking for "permission" to skip this week's weigh in, so thank you! Hoping to go to gym tonight and a swim Fri, and will start a meal plan now if I can get this baby to nap!

Cathy31 · 21/02/2024 12:36

I have stuck to the no chocolate rule so far, except one square when I forgot I was off it. So that's something!

froidIci · 21/02/2024 17:55

Today I complete cut out coffee - which was basically one mug of decaffeinated coffee in the morning and switched entirely to peppermint tea. Have had a great day sans bloating/stomach issues and am taking care to try to stick to low FODMAP foods … let’s see!

Very pleased to say that in eleven days I've dropped a couple of inches on my waist. I started being more serious about my physio exercises, doing some dancing when I could, cutting my food intake and trying to be a tiny bit more conscious of how much carbs/fatty food I was having. I've also cut out the take-aways. I also went on a big walk on Monday, as the physio was really helping.

Waist was size 18 now size 16-18, bust was size 18, now 16-18, hips were size 16-18, now size 16.

Goals from now on are to up the exercise to at least 30 minutes cardio per day. Physio every other day. Add more healthy foods into my diet also. Hopefully carry on doing the big walk once per week. I really don't want to go back up, so I'm so wanting to stick at it. My coat felt looser today, and I noticed my face looked slimmer, so I measured myself.

popplego · 22/02/2024 09:02

@freshstartfor2024 that's fantastic, well done! It's such a motivation boost when the scales/measurements start to reflect your efforts.

@froidIci how did you find cutting the coffee out? I might nip out to buy some peppermint tea today, inspired by this thread!

BranchGold · 22/02/2024 09:08

Hi everyone, well done on the losses and being more mindful of food choices/lifestyle.

Im eating pretty well on the whole (minus a blip around my period which involved some sausage rolls and sweets!) but I’ve been socialising too much and let the wine back in during the week. It’s one of life’s hardest lessons that there’s calories in booze!

I haven’t weighed for a few days, thinking I’ll jump on the scales in the morning. A pound loss a week is really what I should be focused on, and it’s absolutely the right way to do it, but does anyone else find it really boring?? I do get a buzz from seeing the scale move rapidly.

I was only having one cup of decaf anyway so just replaced that and discovered that it was fine. Lots of water, peppermint tea and the odd slices of fresh ginger have really been helping digestion for me I’m finding
