My sister in law thinks that getting drunk results in being thinner in the morning. I have not scientifically tested this.

For me, it's put curly wurlies in the fridge then have one slowly with a cup of tea for a 'treat'.

Lots of sparkling water! Fills you up and hydrates you.

Agreed.

I've got ibs and most carbs set the pain and bloating off

I also have IBS and used to visit the toilet up to 8 times a day due to the carb intake, now I have the opposite problem :)

My metabolism has slowed right down so I'm trying to do a 750 cal 'fast' every third day. See if that works as I wasn't losing a gram on my 1200 per day diet.

my tip, just mixed 5 grams of psyllium husk with about 150 mils of water and then mixed in with a diet yoghurt. It expands and thickens. I seemed to be eating it for ages, it was so 'filling' so I'll be falling back on that on my 'fast' days as I don't want to feel too hungry on a fast in case it increases my cortisol

massivesalads · 04/02/2023 20:02

Strength training.

My tip is to not write off the day/week/month if you go "off plan". Just make a healthy choice as soon as possible. So for example if I've been out for a Sunday roast with red wine and pudding - I enjoy it! But then instead of feeling bad about perhaps jeopardising weight loss, I just make a healthy choice as soon as possible - so I drink a big glass of water, I prep my healthy breakfast for the next morning, or some other small move towards being healthy. Then because the last thing I did was a healthy one I feel motivated to continue.

Fantastic advice

So many good tips. I am 43 and just had that moment when I saw a photo and thought "oh god I am so overweight" so I have had a wake up call. I can't do fasting or higher fat/protein as it irritates my gallstones. I like all food and fruit, so I don't struggle to not like healthy things, I just haven't lost weight over the last year. I regularly do 10000 steps and mostly get my 30 active mins with running around with a toddler, a lunchtime walk etc.
Don't drink much alcohol, have herbal teas and lots of water. The odd penguin/choc snack I guess, but what am I doing wrong?! Help! Should I try the blood group thing?

The blood group thing is likely to be a red herring.

I think people put too much store by the steps thing. Yes it is healthy to walk a lot but it is much easier to lose weight by eating fewer calories than attempt to walk them off. I would start a food diary or start logging all your daily calories into an app like Nutracheck or similar. You will probably be surprised by how much the odd treats all add up. Also, it may be that your portion sizes are too large.

Maybe try something to build more muscle? You could do bodyweight exercises at home, lots of great stuff on socials if you find a trainer you like. Or if you have a bit of time and money try a PT. I see mine once a week and I now know I just wasn’t pushing myself enough either with cardio or weights. She’s a godsend! (I’m 43 too)

flabbygoldfish · 05/02/2023 10:52

I got Covid and barely ate for 5 days - I only lost 4lbs...😞

FlowerArranger · 05/02/2023 13:21

@Whatevernext33 - if you have gallstones, getting those removed would be my first step. It will enhance your quality of life no end.

If you are not losing weight, you are probably eating too much and/or the wrong things. Check your portions and maybe use a smaller plate, or make sure a quarter of your plate is empty. Cut out sugar, UPF and refined carbs. Keep a snack diary and dont drink calories.

10000 steps plus 30 active mins with running around with a toddler may not be enough to stay fit. Can you do 20-30 minutes HIIT (Growingannanas) or weight training with dumbbells (Caroline Girvan) a few times a week?

Doseydots · 07/02/2023 20:44

I listened to this last night through my Bluetooth eye-mask. I woke up a pound lighter and I have eaten healthy all day. I am going to listen again tonight

UnctuousUnicorns · 07/02/2023 21:49

"I woke up a pound lighter"

I wake up 2+ pounds lighter than the night before every morning - I thought everyone did? 🤔

Moonlightsonatas · 07/02/2023 21:53

Don’t eat crap to hide a feeling or to create one. So don’t eat to make yourself less sad or eat something to make yourself happy. That wears off and then you’re just back to feeling the same way again but you’ve eaten junk.

RipWheelersHat · 08/02/2023 09:48

Sorry but 'I listened to this last night through my Bluetooth eye-mask. I woke up a pound lighter' really made me laughGrin

So many great tips on this thread, I will be coming back to read through again every time I need a kick up the arse

I did wonder if that was a joke, but you can never tell with MN! 😅

xJoy · 08/02/2023 11:12

I listened to one of those years ago and I was afraid it would put ideas in my head, I became conscious that the voice was saying ''you don't need to get up in the middle of the night and look to see what's in the fridge'' and I thought to myself, omg, what's in the fridge!?!? never in my life before ever having got out of bed in the middle of the night to eat food in the fridge so be careful with those hypnosis things. Listen to them through first to check they're right for you. I did find another one which was more about making healthy choices and I think perhaps that helped fo ra while.

Scooopsahoy · 15/02/2023 21:19

Easier said than done but for me it’s getting into the mindset that it’s fine, and in fact, normal to feel hunger some of the time.

Not the kind of ‘starving ravenous can’t concentrate because you have a headache’ type hunger, but just the kind where your stomach is a bit rumbly and you feel you’d be able to eat something.

Whereas before if I felt a bit hungry an hour before a meal I’d have a handful of crisps or some nuts, I now just try to acknowledge and accept my hunger, remind myself I’m eating a meal before too long, and try and not eat until meal time.

MrsBloxby · 18/02/2023 11:36

Some great tips on here.
I feel so hungry in the morning, I dont know how so many of you can get to midday without eating. If I could, I would choose 4 hefty sliced of wholemeal bread slathered with peanut butter and topped with dark chocolate chips..!

My top tip is to write EVERYTHING down that you eat. My fitnesspal is great. I was horrified and mortified to see that I had eaten 2 Twirls for breakfast. It also helps with meal planning.

Volume eating works for me. I would rather have a massive plate of low cal food than a small plate of rich food.

Leftbutcameback · 18/02/2023 12:57

I found keeping a journal helps; not just what and when, but why I’m eating (boredom, habit, starving etc). It’s helped me identify a few key points of the day where I struggle. For example if I cook something fresh in the evening I tend to snack whilst cooking.

You sound like me 😄
I lost a lot of weight last year & am maintaining now. My maintenance calories are still fairly low though.
This morning I DID have 4 slices of toast with peanut butter. I'm a toast fiend 😄 Difference is I switched a year ago to the bread that is 60 cals per slice & buy the healthier option peanut butter (aldi) 🥜 So I had a tablespoon of peanut butter (95 cal) over 4 slices of toast (no butter).
So you definitely still can have what you crave you just have to tweak things slightly to suit your calorie intake.

MrsBloxby · 18/02/2023 23:48

@LaTangerina congrats on your weight loss. Great tip- will check out the 60 cal bread. Thank you!

Don’t eat after 6pm/dinner. No snacks. Tea/coffee is ok but no milk or sugar. Ideally skip these and drink lemon water.
Lemon water in the morning and breakfast a few hours later or just skip breakfast and try and have lunch/dinner within a 7 hour timeframe so don’t eat for 17 hours. No processed food, cook from scratch and don’t snack. You will lose so much weight and feel better.

Inkpotlover · 19/02/2023 09:56

I have a Hobbit breakfast! I took stock of my eating habits and found I was bingeing on crisps and crap mid-morning because my breakfast wasn’t filling me up. Now I have a bowl of Greek yogurt and blueberries first thing then a small slice of sourdough bread and peanut butter around 10.30-11 and that keeps me going til lunch. I only eat one bag of crisps a week now (rather than three per day!) and weight is finally, slowly coming off.

Isn’t lemon water meant to be bad for your teeth? Mind you so is all the honey I eat according to my dentist!
