6 stone to lose - my journey!

Hi everyone, long-time lurker here but decided to pop my head up and talk about my weight loss journey which I have just begun.

49 years old, yo-yo dieter for approx 20 years. Never have much problem loosing weight, just can't keep it off. So, I joined Slimming World on Wednesday and have around 6 stone to lose. So far I have lost 3lb, which is to be expected in week 1. Very much enjoyed the group meeting, and the meals/recipes are good too.

So far, so good. Anyone else on their journey too?

Good luck for tomorrow. Star I'm glad the classes help your wife. Smile Well done on your run!
Guess who had chips for tea? Grin I had a breakthrough in my thinking. Previously it would be about how far away from home is the destination? Can I run back if I need to, etc? Realised yesterday that the only 'scary' thing I have to face is my automatic negative thoughts, and I don't have to believe my thoughts or even listen to them. I had one moment where I focused on my breath as I was breathing fast, took a deep breath and forgot about it. I was OK!
Only ment to have a few chips too but they were so good! Shared with mum. Looked up calories on line and I could have had between 3-500, so that still fits in with my daily calories. Yay. :D

StanleyOscar · 25/06/2021 19:38

@73kittycat73 - Well done! Positive thoughts will produce positive results!

P.S. Hope you saved a chip for me! Grin

You totally earned those chips, kitty cat!
I earned a few treats I had yesterday. Mum tried a bit of sabotage but I handled it!
I did buy some posh chocolate, but only ate a small portion. She bought a small birthday cake for me, and I suggested two small slices instead of a big one, so we'll have a treat tonight as well. That put about 4 syns over, but I ate really well all day. Apple chees and yogurt for lunch, jacket potato cheese beans and salad for tea.

Day 2 begins. I may end up at Wetherspoon for breakfast. If I do, I've checked the menu and will have a freedom breakfast-egg bacon beans, no carbs.

picklemewalnuts · 26/06/2021 07:19

And extra congrats for you kitty cat- that's a wonderful breakthrough.

73kittycat73 · 26/06/2021 11:13

Thank you both. Smile
Was it your birthday yesterday picklemewalnuts?
I broke my fast last night (Night time=danger zone). I was up late watching Australia's Biggest Loser (The finale, had to finish it!) on my tablet and was really hungry (Carbs really do leave you hungry and wanting more don't they?!). I remembered that ice cream I had at the back of my freezer. Asda's birthday cake, 181 cals per half pot. I ate the lot. Blush But, I figure if I eat less lunch today and tomorrow I will make up for it.
Any plans for the weekend? How did your weigh in go Stanley? Does your mum usually try and sabotage your weight loss picklemewalnuts?
Have a great weekend whatever you are doing. Smile

Veuvelily · 26/06/2021 12:20

Feeling v low
Scales not moving despite being very good
Had pizza with ds last night. He finally got his adhd diagnosis yesterday and I wanted us to do something nice together.
But now just feeling sad and guilty. About the pizza and about his diagnosis Sad

WheresMyTweezers · 26/06/2021 12:38

Oh lots of good stuff. @73kittycat73 well done on your expedition! Was going to say your restraint too but that outing is so much more important.

@picklemewalnuts fantastic - in the scheme of things 4 syns over is nothing! I always find it hard to turn down hospitality.

@Veuvelily same! After a good loss last week it's been up and down this week and currently looking like at best I'll stay the same and I can't get my head around it (serves me right for weighing daily - I'll stop soon). My husband looked at me this morning and said I'd lost weight so maybe it's just the scales being dicks? I keep telling myself to trust what I'm doing - one takeaway/bad choice isn't going to matter over an entire week. Today's another day and you can balance yesterday.

Oh and @StanleyOscar I thought you were a woman too!

73kittycat73 · 26/06/2021 12:51

Thank you WheresMyTweezers. Smile
Sorry to hear your having a down day Veuvelily. Maybe look at the diagnosis as something good? Now you know what you are dealing with, you can help him more? Sort stuff out at school, etc? Also I bet he really enjoyed the pizza, and your company. As for the scales not moving, I've read about that a lot on here. Give it another weeks and it'll be gone |I'm sure. Smile

picklemewalnuts · 26/06/2021 13:25

@Veuvelily you know, don't you, that the ADHD isn't your fault? You've done a great thing, being persistent enough to get him a diagnosis. You've either had to fight for it, or you've had to cooperate with school when you didn't think there was a problem. Whichever it was, well done! It's not easy.

And as for the pizza, some things and some moments are more important than losing weight. How about coming up with an alternative celebration plan for the next time you need it? Maybe celebrate by asking one of his friends over to eat pizza (instead of you) and watch a movie? Or perhaps a trip out to a crazy golf or similar.

picklemewalnuts · 26/06/2021 13:26

@WheresMyTweezers tell me you've measured everywhere?! If not, do that today. It's so satisfying. I haven't remeasured for a while, but I did recently to inform my bra shopping. It was a huge difference- much more than my weight loss led me to expect.

picklemewalnuts · 26/06/2021 13:34

@73kittycat73
My birthday was last week, but she is celebrating it with me. I don't mind a bit, we'll have a cream tea later in the week, but yesterday she was pushing a bit. She called me miserable because I wouldn't have a drink.

Today however I accidentally had a mocha coffee from the Wetherspoon machine. I had a freedom breakfast so that was syn free, great, then I slipped up at the machine. I was so surprised to see a decaf interesting coffee I pressed the button without thinking. Never mind. I'm still winning overall- I'd usually stress and comfort eat the whole time, so every good choice is a triumph. Like your unintentional ice cream consumption- it could have been worse! Best of all, now you've eaten it, it's gone. It can't tempt you anymore!

StanleyOscar · 26/06/2021 14:26

Not read through the above posts yet, will do so in a moment but I just wanted to say, do not beat yourselves up over having a few treats or not losing weight!

You have a life to live and the whole point of dieting is to improve your quality of life, for the long term! We all get depressed when the scales don't yield a loss, or we eat the wrong thing, but that's not bad, it's just not to plan. You can treat yourself once in a while, just don't make it a habit. The dieting journey isn't just about losing weight, it's also about loving yourself, being happy, being fair to yourself! It's a change for life, through a period of adaptation and it is counter-productive if you get down about any hitch, you will make it an uphill struggle. Don't be your worse enemy, be your best friend and support yourself, it's an education!

Just my 2 pence...

The diagnosis was expected and eagerly awaited, hopefully now I can get things moving for him. Just feels like everything is a battle for not much result.
But that’s crazy, I’ve lost 25lbs and persevered for my sons diagnosis.

picklemewalnuts · 26/06/2021 16:51

Exactly veuvelilly! I'm glad you're getting a better perspective.

There's a bit of an Adrenalin slump that comes after a battle has been won- a feeling of anticlimax (the situation hasn't magically resolved because it's got a label) or just exhaustion, and relaxation from letting go of the fight. It's normal to feel a bit low. Think of it as a chemical thing, and let it go. Tomorrow or the next day will feel better.

73kittycat73 · 26/06/2021 18:19

Well happy belated birthday picklemewalnuts. Star Cake Wine I think your advice to Veuvelily was spot on too. Smile
You make a lot of sense there StanleyOscar
Last week I tried a protein powder for the first time. Being veggie I didn't get much. It was foul. Didn't mix well at all and was really lumpy. I persevered with it though. Bought a new one with my shopping today and it was really nice! Hardly any lumps and tasted like hot chocolate. My yogurts (20% protein) were substituted for 15% protein ones and I tried one of those. Foul! But I downed it to get it over with. About an hour later I had acid reflux and I don't know which one was the culprit. I'm going to take the powder first tomorrow then leave it for an hour before I try he yogurt. I hope it's the yogurts because I don't mind changing them because I don't like them! Grin

WheresMyTweezers · 28/06/2021 06:49

Official weekly weigh in today: 1lb off, 6lb in total.

While I'd have expected to lose more in first 2 weeks (given I have a lot to lose) I'm not too downhearted. Family birthday yesterday and while I made relatively good choices food wise, I did have a massive slab of cake and I've worked up parched this morning so suspect there's a little bit of dehydration going on. And weighing daily at one point this week I thought I was heading for a gain.

Fairly quiet week for me this week so I think I should do ok but we'll see. I might shift my official weigh in this week though if I go out on Saturday night. I hardly ever drink but I usually gain when I do so want to give myself a couple of days grace to fight any gain!

@picklemewalnuts no I've not measured yet. I will but can't face it yet Blush BUT a little NSV yesterday - a bra which goes with a certain dress but crushes my ribcage was marginally less uncomfortable yesterday. Gotta take your wins where you can!

picklemewalnuts · 28/06/2021 07:33

Ew, Kittycat!

Good attitude, tweezers! Much better to accept there will be occasional extras and keep on track the rest of the time, than to beat yourself up.

And I know this because yesterday I had fish and chips and an ice cream! I also had two skinny crunch bars, because I needed the fibre, several apples and a mullerlight. So not appalling over the course of a 10,000 step day, but not ideal!

I've been pretty busy hanging pictures, renewing her driving license, discussing her various plans and problems. She drives me potty- she needs help with lots of things, which is fine, but she can't let us get on with them without micromanagement and her life history! awe stand there, hammer in hand, hearing about where she bought the picture, who she was with, what Bill next door said the day before she bought it.... which would be fine if there wasn't so much else to do! Thing is, we're here a week and she'll complain we don't stay longer. I'll get home and she'll be on the phone panicking about something we didn't have time to do. We could do so much more if she'd let us.

Veuvelily · 28/06/2021 08:34

Official weigh in day 1lb off
But I have had a bit of a breakthrough. I stopped taking my iron tablets in an attempt to get my bowels back to normal and they seem to be moving again, tmi- sorry! I do need to take the iron tablets, but a couple of days will be ok.

picklemewalnuts · 28/06/2021 09:04

That's so important! I have the same issue when dieting. I use a mixture of caffeine and kiwi with the skin still on.

If I am drinking cola, it isn't a problem. If I'm giving it up, then I need a strong coffee in the morning!

It isn't a problem I ever had before, but now it's part of my general dietary considerations!

73kittycat73 · 28/06/2021 10:44

Well done on the losses WheresMyTweezers and Veuvelily. Star I completely understand about the bowel issues. No joke when you can't go!
How are you today picklemewalnuts? I didn't really get any reflux yesterday (Teeny tiny bit with the powder.) so hopefully it was just a weird one off.
Weigh in today, after 12 days, I've lost 5.2lb! Now down to 11st 5.2 lb. I am so pleased! The exercise is paying off to. My measurement stayed the same so hopefully they'll catch up soon. I've decided to weigh every 2 weeks now.
Good luck for today everyone! Star

StanleyOscar · 28/06/2021 11:17

Good morning everyone, how are we doing today? The start of another week!

Well, I did a ton of exercise last week, and only lost 1lb since Wednesday, having lost 5lbs the previous week. I'm still eating the same, no cheating or treats, just goes to show that there is no logic when it comes to dieting. However, this week so far I have noticed my inches had decreased, and that is as important as weight loss!

Also, it is important to look at the bigger picture. I am 1stone 5lbs down on what I was this time last month and so long as I keep it that way, all is good. Still 2 days to go until SW weigh in, and you never know, I might get a big weight loss next week.

@WheresMyTweezers - Yes, good attitude!

@73kittycat73 - I always get relux with yoghurts, standard practise. Not going to stop me eating them though.

@picklemewalnuts - Poor you, I do feel for you. Parents mean well, but...

@73kittycat73 - Well done on the weight loss btw, that is fantastic!

@Veuvelily - I never thought about the bowel blockage thing, I wonder if that has anything to do with my weight fluctuations? I do eat a diet high in Iron.

We need to talk more about this bowel thing!

73kittycat73 · 28/06/2021 11:37

Hi StanleyOscar, and thank you. Smile Well done on 1st 5lbs in a month! That's awesome. Star
Sorry too much TMI but I usually find it hard to go when on a 'diet.' I have some suppositories in the bathroom cabinet for emergencies! They are a life saver.

StanleyOscar · 28/06/2021 12:21

@73kittycat73 - It's not TMI, it's quite interesting thanks. Since I started my diet I have been fairly regular, but sometimes, like now, not so much. Makes sense that changing the diet can have that effect, but I do try to keep up my fibre intake and fluids. As I said earlier, I wonder if it has any impact of weight, i.e. a good naturel purge is key!

OP posts:
picklemewalnuts · 28/06/2021 12:25

I think it's eating less, or eating less fat. For me it's bread- eating less granary bread. There's nothing obvious I can replace the fibre with that's lower cal. I'm using chia seeds too, I forgot to mention before.
