Mutual support thread for those currently losing or working towards losing a lot of weight

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 14/03/2021 21:53

This is a mutual support thread for anyone who wants (and needs) to lose a lot of weight, is mid way through losing a lot of weight, or is nearing the end of a big weight loss and wants to continue to support and be supported as maintenance approaches.

The previous thread has been massively helpful to regular posters, as we share both our losses and our plateau or gains, congratulate or console, and talk about what works for us while understanding that different things work for different people, and we are all different ages, all have different families/ households/ people to plan around, different commitments, different working lives and different health conditions which partly determine our approaches.

We are all on this journey together - this thread is for us to encourage one another, post updates, chat about what we're doing, how we're doing, share stories and thoughts and sometimes wander slightly off topic if we want, but everyone posting should be somewhere along the journey towards escaping high BMI obesity.

The previous thread was started by someone who no longer posts and initially asked how to lose 9 stone - it developed into a support thread for people with varying amounts left to lose but all of whom started out with at least 5 or 6 stone + / 30 or 35 kg + to lose, very roughly...

No links to selling sites or unsolicited "helpful" lectures please - mutual support from existing and new posters all actually living this big weight loss now, or just starting out, welcome!

@Zebracat @alphaechokiwi I am very confused (had some prosecco earlier which might explain that)!

@AGoatsbawhairaway welcome! Glad you are here Smile I have been on antidepressants for some time (and honestly could have been considered depressed since I was a teenager, really), and I believe that is a large contributing factor to my weight gain. I have definitely always been one to eat my pain. So I know where you're coming from! Anyhow I hope you find this thread supportive. You have done so well so far!

I had some friends over for lunch in the garden. It was lovely to see people! We are quite a lot (huge Easter pudding) but I literally make it once a year so I think that's fine. And every mouthful was delicious.

alphaechokiwi · 03/04/2021 18:20

@ScottishBeth I know, I've confused myself! Looks like I recorded my weight incorrectly somewhere last week.... But no matter!
I'm glad you enjoyed your Easter lunch... I plan on doing the same tomorrow!

StormcloakNord · 04/04/2021 08:48

Welcome @AGoatsbawhairaway 10lbs is amazing - that's what I'm on so far! (Hopefully more as I'm lying in bed chilling until I go for a pee and do my Sunday weigh in!) we're on the same calories too :)

Hope everyone has a fabulous Easter Sunday today! We aren't doing anything overly special as none of us are religious but an Easter egg and and a roast will be had!

StormcloakNord · 04/04/2021 10:14

108.8kg - up by 0.1kg from yesterday but started the week at 111kg so I'll take that. Weight has steadied off a lot over the last couple of days so the initial water weight "whoosh" is past... just got to keep plugging away!

Zebracat · 04/04/2021 11:42

Morning all. 98.8 this morning which is a 100 gram gain. Doesn’t seem too bad. I do have an Easter egg, which I will share, and we’ll see how this week goes. I still don’t feel well, but soldiering on.

Rebuildingconfidence · 05/04/2021 02:28

Hello

I was on the last thread but I pretty much gave up after being congratulated on my pregnancy for the second time in the space of a few months (I haven't been pregnant for almost ten years).

I started in July last year at 108kgs and am now around 104kgs. Argh.

Just the past week or so I have started making a real effort again. I am exercising and trying to eat well.

It's just mega hard. Hope to get back to posting and weight loss!

Stuckanddesperate · 05/04/2021 09:04

Not been great here family birthday and Easter lunch etc so put on 2lb overnight. Still got rhubarb crumble to finish today but should be back on it tomorrow. Hoping as the nights get lighter I can go for a walk after dinners a bit more.

Welcome @Rebuildingconfidence. You are less than you were last July so that’s definitely a positive 😃

Backtobackagain · 05/04/2021 11:15

Hi all! Feeling a bit stuck- have been hovering between the same two pounds for 3 weeks now. Have had very healthy days and days with some less sensible choices, but doesn’t seem to be making a discernible difference either way. Feel that I maybe need to try to shock my metabolism into doing something. Any ideas?
What is new, and positive, for me however, is that I am continuing to weigh and have not given up and fallen completely off the wagon because it’s become frustrating. I have to admit to feeling a bit envious of those of you with steady losses though, even if small. Must be nice to feel what you are doing is working.
Crazy weather here- got sunburned in the garden yesterday and snowing here today! Going to wrap up and go for a walk in a bit. My boys are busy building new Lego they got for Easter, so I am entirely “surplus to requirements” today!

Backtobackagain · 05/04/2021 11:20

@Rebuildingconfidence
Hello! I was also on the thread last year, and started again in Feb 7lbs heavier than I was then. So I feel your pain. It is hard, the thing that seems to have shifted for me is that I’ve accepted no quick fix is going to work (too much to lose) and so it has to be about good choices most of the time and not perfection.

I dream of the day I start being able to notice my efforts in the feel of clothes/ look in the mirror/ energy levels. I’m not there yet, but so want to be!

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 05/04/2021 11:55

AGoatsbawhairaway welcome and well done on the first 10lb!

Rebuildingconfidence welcome back - you've 4kg less to lose than you had before, so that's a win!

Backtobackagain I think that's just how it is sometimes, your body sort of needs to catch up with itself - have you measured your waist? Sometimes I've lost waist cm after the lb (so lost some weight on the scales without my waist getting smaller, then not lost weight in following weeks but my waist has only then got a cm or 2 smaller). I admit I have done the occasional 24 hour fast to kick start - you eat normally on day 1, finish eating at say 6pm after an early dinner, then fast til dinner at 6pm next day - so you don't actually go day without eating, but still fast 24 hours. Then obviously you don't eat more to compensate! You eat a normal dinner, no snacks after, and go back to your normal healthy routine the next day. Basically its just a way of mixing things up - you could also switch to a big breakfast and very light dinner for afew days if you usually eat your main meal in the evening.

@Backtobackagain I tend to be very slow to stall and it is so difficult to keep going. I know my cycle really impacts on my weight and appetite
Hello @Rebuildingconfidence
I've had a weird first week as I've not felt well since Wednesday which I think reduced my appetite and cravings. Dropped to 95.2kg which is a big loss but being ill isn't what I would recommend and will have to see how things settle.
I've added active 10 app to nhs weight loss app and have been for an hours forest walk this morning and found hills really tough. Trying to incorporate a lunchtime walk into usual work routine while I'm working from home.
Overall I'm pleased with choices I've made - still had chippy tea (but with more controlled portion and no pile of bread and butter) Smile

Ammorey · 05/04/2021 16:33

As some have asked upthread the 7 app is a workout for approximately 7 minutes. 30 seconds X exercise and then a 15 second break before the next one. Very doable and easy to follow as it has an animated person on the screen showing how the exercise is done and a 'personal trainer' telling you what it is and counting down for you.

It has been a week and I have struggled with some of the exercises but I have managed to get through it. Some exercises I have had to stop doing and wait for the next one but that's down to my own stamina. All in all it is a great app.

I do enjoy yoga but I find it hard to turn my brain off when it's so silent and focus on breathing so I never feel relaxed. I do enjoy the stretches though. I tried Pilates once and honestly thought my legs were going to fall off Blush

I really do agree with PP that mental health has a knock on effect with diet. It's is extremely hard to eat healthily when your having a bad episode. Luckily I am on a new type of SSRI's along with some prescribed vitamins that should help me function better. I hope everyone else struggling with MH can find their own way of plodding through it too!

I know I don't know any of you lot personally, but I just had to say how lovely it is to see so many of you cheering each other on. It's really sweet to see strangers giving support and helping each other out. After reading the posts from this last week it has really stuck in my mind to be kinder to myself about 'bad diet decisions'. I think I need to stop viewing food in a negative way or I won't move forward at all. It is okay to have a treat and it doesn't mean I need to give in and eat everything in the snack cupboard. It is going to be very hard to unlearn these behaviours though. Thank you and good look to you all Smile here's to a healthier and happier 2021 Wine

Backtobackagain · 05/04/2021 21:10

Just did my first 7 app workout. Push ups were a bit beyond me, but I did everything else so feel chuffed about that! Thanks @Ammorey for the recommendation. Going to have a bath now and then do some bedtime yoga and go to bed feeling accomplished. Think evening walk/work out/yoga is the thing for me as that is when I most likely get the munchies!

StormcloakNord · 07/04/2021 10:18

Hi everyone old and new!!

108.5kg today which is a new low. I tend to weigh myself every day as it dulls the effect if you know what I mean? Plus if I stop weighing for some reason my head assumes it's okay to eat every ounce of chocolate in the house!

Hope everyone is getting on alright & had a really good Easter weekend! Easter Smile

ScottishBeth · 07/04/2021 10:29

Hi everyone! I've not been around in a few days as I've been unwell. But I weighed myself this morning and I was 86.9, which is a loss of 1.9kg in a week! I'm sure part of it is normal fluctuations (maybe had a bit more water weight last week), but I'm very pleased anyway. It's also not really a surprise as my appetite hasn't been that great at points.

Hello @Rebuildingconfidence! I know what that is like. Over the years I have gone up and down and back up again so many times. I hope you keep posting, and as well as letting us know successes, tell us when something happens to discourage you! Eating well and exercising is fantastic though!

Zebracat · 07/04/2021 12:08

Hello everyone. Big welcome back to @Rebuildingconfidence.

I’ve had a shit few days, not feeling well and family drama. The worst is that a massive bit of tooth sheered off on Easter Sunday. The temporary filling I put in just fell out and I can’t see a dentist for 3 weeks. Although of course, this does also mean that I can only eat porridge and soup, so it may be fine for weight loss, but it feels really crap.

ScottishBeth · 07/04/2021 13:21

@StormcloakNord not sure how I missed your post. Weighing yourself every day to avoid eating chocolate sounds sensible! It doesn't work for me unfortunately. If I weigh myself every day I'd get to the point of weighing myself several times a day, which isn't good! But it is obviously working for you! And I can see it could avoid focusing on the everyday fluctuations, to just look at the trend.

@Zebracat sorry to hear things have been rough! I hope the non-dental aspects are improving. Teeth and dentists are so difficult!

Backtobackagain · 07/04/2021 21:36

@StormcloakNord I am the same weighing everyday- if I stop, I can easily fall completely off the wagon! Scales have finally moved the last 2 days and I’m a lb down! Small loss, but I feel better that I am moving in the right direction. It’s my birthday tomo, so I have a lovely cake that my boys have made, but I feel happy about enjoying 1 piece, not 5!
@ScottishBeth and @Zebracat hope you are both better soon!

ScottishBeth · 08/04/2021 09:53

@Backtobackagain Happy Birthday! Flowers Enjoy your cake Cake

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 08/04/2021 10:27

Well done@Ammorey and @Backtobackagain on getting your exercise in. Very sane words about mental health and being kind to ourselves Ammorey - thank you.
Happy birthday backtobackagain 🎂.
Congratulations on your new low @StormcloakNord.
@ScottishBeth and @Zebracat I hope you are both feeling better soon. 3 weeks wait for the dentist....ouch😱.
Well done on your weigh loss @scottishBeth
Welcome back@Rebuildingconfidence good luck with your goals
I'm having a bit of a rubbish week. Dodgy knee is only slowly getting better, I have a cold and an ear infection so haven't been able to swim or do any exercise. I'm hoping I'll be able to get back in the pool tomorrow. I had a bit of a lapse yesterday with food, but I'm not going to let it derail me as I might have done in the past. This is the long haul, I'll move on and it's not going to make a difference to my long term weight loss. I'll probably not lose anything this week but I'll keep going - onwards and downwards!

chocpott · 08/04/2021 17:00

Hi everyone! Can I join in? I'm 5.2ft, weigh 21st 10lbs and am desperate! I have arthritis, PCOS, aches and pains and last year diagnosed as type 2 diabetic. I get bouts of depression and low mood and hate myself. Anyhow, thought I'd join the chat and hope for some of your good work to inspire me!

alphaechokiwi · 08/04/2021 20:14

Welcome @chocpott - this is a very gentle supportive thread, with some inspiring posters, o hope you find the support you need here.

Dobbyafreeelf · 08/04/2021 20:20

Can I join? I'm over 23 stone aiming to get down to around 14/15 stone so long way to go. Last week I lost 3lbs and this week 2lbs. I'm following SlimmingWorld plan. Primarily eating SlimmingWorld ready meals as I'm so busy and tired atm but hoping to start cooking more soon.
I have PCOS, endometriosis and other gyny issues which are all being blamed on my weight. I also am having hip and knee pain.
2021 is the year it is all going!

Zebracat · 08/04/2021 20:23

Welcome @chocpott. I hope you will find this a helpful thread. Howard you planning this?. If you don’t know yet, that’s fine, making one small change is often a good start.
@alphaechokiwi. Thanks for your concern. I phoned back and got an urgent emergency appointment, had a filling today. The relief is amazing. I’m still ill, I will try for a GP appointment tomorrow, but at least I can eat and have a cup of tea. Sorry you’re not so good. These are the testing times, but in the spirit of no S, I do think sick starts with S, and that therefore allows me some flexibility!

I’ve been reading the Dr Chatterjee book recommend3d up thread. I was a bit sniffy at first because it’s a bit Insta iyswim, lots of pretty pictures and very few words. But actually, it’s growing on me, he’s keen on stressing some key messages and they don’t get lost in a mass of detail. My current takeaway from it is to shut down my tablet an hour before bed. My insomnia is out of control and that is 1 thing that I haven’t done yet. I used to spend an hour a day on my tablet precovid, now it’s about 11 hours, and it wrecks sleep. And sexy diet doctor says good sleep is crucial to weight loss.
