Tier 3 and 4 is part of the NHS pathway to weight loss surgery. Have a look at the nice guidelines for obesity management.
Tier 3 is the process prior to having surgery agreed, you meet with dieticians, psychotherapists, etc and have to lose a certain amount of weight before hand.
Tier 4 is when you’ve jumped through all the hoops and met all the targets and they finally list you for surgery - it can still be 18 months out from being listed before you’re on the operating table, probably even longer with covid.
I think it’s fairly common knowledge that weight loss surgery in the UK is around the £10k price point.
My surgery was with Tonic at the BMI alexandra in Cheadle. I paid £11,700 for a laparoscopic gastric bypass.
However £1000 of that was because my BMI was over 50 so you must have an ICU bed on stand by in case there are any complications in theatre or during recovery. They were always transparent that if I could get my BMI reduced to below 50 before the date my balance was due then I wouldn’t be charged the £1k extra.
As it happened I had absolutely no complications and was up and about with in a couple of hours of being back in my room. I had a normal room, which was located next to the ICU, presumably so that they could rapidly sort me out if anything went awry.
The sleeve is cheaper than the bypass.
I’m four weeks post op today and have already reduced my BMI by 6 points!
