@ThatsnotmyBorishishairistoneat

Yes, it’s possible. Some people end up lactose intolerant post surgery so kind of have it forced on them if they were already veggie anyway.

The most important thing is getting the protein in, but there are some fab things out there now with plant based forms of protein. The M&S Plant Kitchen range has good amounts of protein, and you can get plenty of protein from shakes and soy protein powder stirred/blended into recipes. But if you’re vegan you probably know this.

B12 is another factor, if you have the bypass you’ll need quarterly B12 injections, which obviously vegans often have to work hard to compensate for in their diets.

QueenOfPain · 15/02/2021 19:24

@DrPhilYourGuts

You do need to quit alcohol as you can’t drink for a whole year post op. Addiction transference is a very real risk post op as some people simply substitute their food addiction for alcoholism instead. You won’t get the results you want if you do that, and it’s also harmful.

With regards the patient who died, it’s unlikely to be surgery related or they’d have found that out at post mortem and during the inquest. I assume the surgeon would have been called to the inquest to as an interested party to give evidence having operated on them in the last six weeks of their life. The coroner likely gave an “unascertained” verdict for the death certificate, which wouldn’t be done without the Pathologist exhausting all possible options to find the cause (sometimes includes sending blocks of the organs away to the home office for further expert examination), they might also have been a person who had significant co-morbidities that contributed.

(I’m a nurse with some experience of coronial procedures).

Hi everyone.

I've been looking into irmet in Turkey and am just waiting for them to contact me with a quote. My budget is between 3-5k and I have that in my savings account ready to go..

I just feel like.. I don't know.. like I don't deserve the surgery and I deserve to be miserable and if I tell my mum (who I will need to as my husband will be at home with our toddler while im away and will need her support) She will think it's a waste of money and I should lose weight the proper way, by dieting.

Both me and mum have been in a diet most of our lives and she's actually a really lovely person so I don't know why I'm feeling this.. embarrassment/guilt?

Can anyone else relate to these feeling at all?

DrPhilYourGuts · 16/02/2021 09:31

Thanks @QueenOfPain that’s useful although think your second post might have been for someone else as I don’t drink.

I think you’re completely right, I have already started to have some apathy, although I think just missing the things I can’t have and not wanting the things I can.

It’s definitely making me confront my emotional eating (which I hoped for!) and that’s not easy.

I think I’ll take longer to progress onto the next stage as I had the long pouch method. Waiting to hear from the dietician. Luckily through having long pouch there’s no nausea so would recommend that to anyone who is considering bypass.

QueenOfPain · 16/02/2021 15:34

Yes, sorry! Just realised I tagged the wrong person!

Glad you feel like things are moving on a stage, it all happens so quickly in the first few weeks, it’s a rollercoaster.

LadyShmuck · 16/02/2021 16:45

@Neversleepingever I felt guilty spending money on myself more than anything else. I also told nobody really, my sister and my ex husband (needed him to have the kids!) he told exMIL who thought I should have waited to try and get it done on the NHS.

I don't regret it a bit, don't regret spending the money, couldnt give a flying fuck what anyone thinks now. I've done every diet in the world, if I was going to lose the weight and keep it off, I'd have done it by now.

We get one go at life. It's literally the first time in my adult years that I've not been in a constant cycle of thinking about food/feeling guilty/feeling like I'm missing out. I wish I had done it years ago. Apart from just the weight loss, I feel massively better, I had no idea how much of my life was spent thinking about food.

You have to make the decision for you and not someone else, they don't live your life.

Neversleepingever · 16/02/2021 19:25

Thanks @LadyShmuck

I texted my Mum to try and plant the seed and said I was thinking about it. She said good god no' and 'You wanna read about people that have gone to turkey to get their teeth done (veneers) and died' then linked me to a daily fail article:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8809779/Family-British-man-died-teeth-whitening-trip-Turkey-await-toxicology-tests.html

And just said if they can kill you in Turkey for teeth whitening imagine what they do with major surgery. Then said 'Theres a supplement boombod that you take before food that is supposed to suppress your appetite. I watched lose a stone in 4 weeks and one of the girls tried it'

It's just made me feel really ashamed. I'm 99% sure I want to do it. My husband is supportive but would have to work while I'm away for the week and our toddler will need looking after so it's that that's worrying me. I've only ever been away from my son for 1 night when I had my gallbladder removed. Being in another country for a week scares me.

MinnieAnonyMouse · 16/02/2021 22:08

Hi all!

I've just found this thread - I had a bypass in mid November. Currently 3 stone 8 down which feels fantastic. Best thing I've done. I'd love it if it was coming off a little quicker but so far it's been very stable

MindBodyChocolate · 17/02/2021 10:05

Hi @MinnieAnonyMouse - welcome :) I had my sleeve at the beginning of November and have lost the same as you. Sometimes I do wish it was faster but I keep reminding myself that I've never lost this much before and it's still coming off. I also feel ok with what I'm eating - which again I never experienced before when 'on a diet'. Are you doing much exercise? Home school and gym closures have scuppered my plans but am gradually getting into long walks.

MindBodyChocolate · 17/02/2021 10:08

@Neversleepingever - my mum initially reacted badly and I was staying in the UK. She has come round now but I had to take the decision to do this for myself. and when you think about it, staying obese is definitely bad for your health whereas you're taking an informed decision about going to Turkey. I hope you can come to a decision you're comfortable with but try to think of yourself.

Neversleepingever · 17/02/2021 13:18

@MindBodyChocolate you're absolutely right. I'm going to get it done. Mum has said she will help look after my toddler so my husband can continue to work while I'm away and my SIL will be able to be my companion. Only thing I'm waiting for is restrictions to be lifted and then I will book!!

MindBodyChocolate · 17/02/2021 15:09

@Neversleepingever - it’s nice your SIL will go with you. Well done on making the decision - fingers crossed for speedy lifting of travel restrictions!

MinnieAnonyMouse · 19/02/2021 11:06

Hi @Neversleepingever! Exercise is the one thing I am failing miserably at. I work really long hours and it's dark and miserable haha. I have a wii fit and keep trying to do stuff on there but have been so busy it's been genuinely a couple of weeks since I did. It seems to be coming off at about a pound a week at the minute and I'd really like to increase it!

QueenOfPain · 22/02/2021 19:20

Hello everyone,

How are we all?

I hit my first big milestone on Friday, 50lbs down in 9 weeks! It feels like such a large amount, but at the same time, a drop in the ocean.

Now wondering if I can lose another 50lbs in the 17 weeks between now and when the world opens up again!

CoronaCurls · 22/02/2021 20:04

That's brilliant @QueenOfPain well done!

I'm over 6 stone down and able to take loads more exercise- I'm walking 2-3 miles every day and exercising on my vibration plate daily.

I'm trying to incorporate more 'real' food but mainly survive on protein porridge and chicken breasts.

Seriouslyconfused3 · 23/02/2021 07:23

Wow that’s amazing progress! What percentage of your excess weight have you all lost now?

I need to get back on track with my protein. It’s dipped and my hair is really falling out, I’m knackered and run down. Any tips would be great Smile

OP posts:
RalphtheMouth · 23/02/2021 08:13

Fantastic results from you all! On countdown here and can’t wait for my op.

@Seriouslyconfused3 sorry to hear your hair is coming out, seems very common.

Seriouslyconfused3 · 23/02/2021 08:44

How long left @RalphtheMouth?

On a bonus note I am no longer obese! Officially just overweight Grin

RalphtheMouth · 23/02/2021 09:46

@Seriouslyconfused3 fantastic!

26 March, LRD from 12th

Seriouslyconfused3 · 23/02/2021 10:13

Oh wow not long to go at all! How are you feeling about it?

OP posts:
Kamma89 · 23/02/2021 10:30

@Seriouslyconfused3 Huge congrats on your bmi milestone! It's such a big one to "only" be overweight isn't it Grin

Sorry to hear about the hair loss & energy. Now I'm further out I really have to concentrate on vitamins & protein prioritising as so easy to get slack. From what I've read there isn't much you can do but the hair does grow back as your body & weight loss stabilise.

How many grams are you aiming for? My nutritionist said about 40-60 for the first 6 months but I've been at about 70-95 from the first month. Protein waters, yogurts, shakes, been very lucky & had no issues with meat, lentils, etc. Little additions like chia seeds etc help get my numbers up too. Good luck

Mylittlesandwich · 23/02/2021 10:33

Just came across this thread. I would love to be able to afford bariatric surgery. I just wanted to say well done to those who've had such brilliant losses.

CoronaCurls · 23/02/2021 10:42

I've lost 62% of my excess weight Grin

@SeriouslyConfused3 have you tried taking biotin for your hair?

I use my fitness pal to track everything I eat to check I'm getting enough protein. I bought some plain protein powder recently from Bulk (recommended by someone else on this thread) to add to food to up the protein.

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 23/02/2021 11:14

Hello, do you mind if I join your thread?

I posted in AIBU last week about how much of an issue my weight has become, I was always terrified of the idea of surgery but since posting that something has just changed in my head. I've been researching like mad, and I read through every post on your previous thread.

I have my first consultation for a sleeve tomorrow, and I'm so nervous but actually incredibly excited and hopeful too. I'd have it done tomorrow if I could. I know it's not an easy fix and is just something to help rather than lose the weight for me, but I need to lose at least 10 stone, ideally 15 to get to a proper healthy weight for my height. I've tried and ultimately failed at every diet going in the past!

RalphtheMouth · 23/02/2021 12:26

@Seriouslyconfused3 I’m excited to get the weight off, really looking forward to being fitter. Still apprehensive about the op though, what if I don’t lose weight, what if I’m sick all the time (3 pregnancies with 24/7 sickness has left me hating being sick), why did I let my weight get to this level etc.

I’m sure most people feel the same pre op but the potential positives hugely outweigh the negative worries.
