Hello everyone, I thought I should update on what’s now known as my Turkish adventure! I arrived here last Monday, expecting surgery on Tuesday, which I would have had, if I hand to brought bloody covid with me!
I was shipped to the plague hospital for 3 days and to be fair I was very well looked after there., they keep testing me and I had 2 negative pcr tests last Wednesday.
I had my surgery late on Friday, and it went well. I’m just bored out of my head as I should have been home yesterday had it not been for the covid-it really does keep giving

SilverOtter · 07/11/2021 15:10

Hi everyone,

Just thought I’d update you!

I went into hospital on Tuesday (2nd) for my op, but didn’t go down to theatre until after 4pm (the waiting was just torture!).

The op itself went perfectly, but my blood pressure and heart rate went a bit nuts during the anaesthetic, and they are still high now (but coming down gradually).

It took me ages to come round, and then I basically slept away the 36 hours following the op. Couldn’t pee for ages, and very narrowly avoided having a catheter!😣

On the third day the anaesthetist was still a bit reluctant to discharge me as I was still sleepy and bp/hr still high, but I was desperate to get home to my children, and figured I’d probably heal faster once back in my own home.

While I was in hospital, I struggled with getting anything into me even water. Everything just felt horrendously uncomfortable and made me gurgle like a mad plughole😂

I’m now on day 5 post-op, and I would say today is the first day I’ve started feeling properly hungry again and actually enjoying food (well, soups and shakes). I’m feeling almost normal, just still a bit sore round my tummy especially when turning over on bed at night.

Today it was my eldest’s 9th birthday party and I have frozen some little bits of cake to enjoy once I can have solids again☺️ Oh, and I wore a new dress and boots that I bought two years ago but that I never could get into before🥳

Good luck to everyone coming up for surgery, and those of you recovering I hope it’s going well😘

JudgeRindersMinder · 07/11/2021 15:21

@SilverOtter that’s really positive to hear as I’m a few days behind you-glad you’re feeling so well

Hi all! So much happening!! @FrustratedTeddyLamp honestly it’s personal how much each person can eat. I’m on WhatsApp group with the others who had surgery with me in hospital and we all really vary. I’m on the lower side. Never more than 2 tablespoons of anything, and I do “chew” the purées and gave learnt to each with gaps between bites to make sure I don’t miss the “full” point and end up in pain. If you are worried it’s best to contact the team at hospital they will be able to give more specific advice.

@HotSteppa good luck with the LRD. It’s worth it but it’s tough. I still think my limited pain post surgery and healing are partly to do with the preparation the LRD gave me. The 18th will roll round quickly! 🤞

@JudgeRindersMinder oh my gosh you really have had an adventure! It does sound like you have been well looked after. Good luck with your recovery and travel home! Hopefully not long now.

@SilverOtter glad to hear you are recovering now. I’m sure it was quite unnerving to be so unwell after. I didn’t have the blood pressure issues but I was extremely lethargic after surgery and slept solid after. The nurses raised me at 2.30am insisted I walk and drink !! I managed 3 steps and 3 sips then just slept! But eventually I came round and felt more myself. Good luck with your recovery!! Take it easy and look after yourself.

I’m now 3 weeks 4 days post surgery and while still on purée I’m adding in soft foods for a bit if variety!! I’m well healed but the incisions still nip from time to time! I’ve been lucky and had all this time off work but I go back tomorrow so we’ll see how that goes as I can still get tired some days. I’m trying with the protein but I’m still a way off full 60g but I’m hoping when I can have full foods I can get that sorted! I’ve lost 30lb since start of LRD and I’m thrilled. Sadly not dropping dress sizes yet but all in good time!!

6 months post op and I hit my 6 stone loss last week.

It feels unreal. Like in my head I look exactly the same.

Congratulations on your fantastic weight loss!

You may think you look the same (the head can take a while to catch up with the change in body shape/size) but I bet everyone else who knows you doesn't think the same Smile Six stone loss is amazing!

Are you now at your goal weight?

RiskyCookie · 08/11/2021 18:36

Thank you @RevisionSurgeryQ.

I'm not quite there yet need to lose around a stone and a half. My BMI has gone from 43 to 28. Grin

Amazing weight loss and reduction in your BMI @RiskyCookie. I bet you look and feel like a new person!!!

The reason I asked if you were at goal was to do with shopping for new clothes to suit your much slimmer body. I can relate to it taking a while for the weight loss to sink in having had a (failed) gastric band 10 years ago.

It might be time for you to dig out some old photographs as a comparison Grin

RiskyCookie · 08/11/2021 21:42

Thing is @RevisionSurgeryQ I don't really have a lot because I hated my weight. 😂

Catch 22!

JudgeRindersMinder · 10/11/2021 12:17

I’m finally back home after my Turkish adventure 🎉.
I’ve just been on the scales and having had surgery 5 days ago I’m a stone down 😊. I’m away to do some planning and make myself a thimbleful of soup for lunch 😂.
It’s all good though, I know it’s very early days but I’m in no doubt I’ve done the right thing for me

HotSteppa · 10/11/2021 12:29

@JudgeRinder enjoy your thimbleful of soup 😆 I'm on day 6 LRD (800 Cals daily) and running mainly on coffee. Just had mushrooms and a solitary egg scrambled together for lunch. It's filled a hole but I'm working from home today and the head hunger is getting to me

JudgeRindersMinder · 10/11/2021 13:04

@HotSteppa keep at it-you’ll get there I promise.

What’s surprising me is I’ve gone from my first waking thought literally being “what can I eat?” to it just not being an issue- in the space of 10 days!! Obviously I’m doing a bit of thinking and planning just now as Im still liquids only, but it seems
To be in a purely functional way instead of taking up all my headspace like if I was “dieting”. Fingers crossed this continues as I know I’m still very early days

HotSteppa · 10/11/2021 13:21

@judgeRinder that sounds amazing and is exactly what I'm hoping for. Just a bit of let up from food taking up so much headspace!!

AnOnly · 11/11/2021 13:34

Hi All - I am post op day 6 from having a bypass. Feeling the best today since the op so that's reassuring. Managed a walk outside, which was nice. Everyone is so supportive on this thread. Well done to all that are on the WLS journey. Smile

RevisionSurgeryQ · 11/11/2021 17:33

@JudgeRindersMinder

I totally get what you mean! When we're 'dieting' we're consumed with thoughts of food, meal planning, and berating when we eat something that's not 'allowed'.

I'm 7 weeks post op and I barely give any thought to food. It's as though that negative mindset around 'dieting' has vanished. I have to eat to live and not live to eat as felt like the case pre surgery.

It's so liberating. I want it to last forever Grin

Welcome @AnOnly. Would you like to share your bypass story so far?

Teaandtonic · 11/11/2021 21:34

Hiya,
I'm new to this page and just after some advice really.
I've been put on a list for bariatric surgery. I start my tier 3 weight management programme next week and then have the option to progress to tier 4, WLS, if I have met the criteria.

Can anyone advise the time frame this is likely to be?

I'm also totally torn about it. I don't want to be a 90 year old on restricted eating or with complications from bariatric surgery. Equally, I want to be healthy.

Any thoughts?

I'm self funded and can't advise on NHS timescales; however, having read this thread, the one before it and countless other bits of info about the NHS and bariatric surgery, it's not something that tends to happen quickly.

It might be a good idea to read this thread and the one before it for NHS experiences.

I say this with no malice intended, if you are heavy enough now to qualify for bariatric surgery on the NHS, you may not reach 90 years of age, unless you're 89 now Grin

Again, I would urge you to read the bariatric support threads for positive outcomes for people of all ages.

Weight loss supports longevity of life. Okay, changes have to be made in relation to what we put in our mouths, but I'd guess the majority of people on these threads do not regret their decision to go ahead with surgery and reap the rewards of a positive impact on their lives, in so many ways, not just longevity.

Teaandtonic · 12/11/2021 19:21

Thank you, yes you're right about that! I will have a good read. I'm guessing all of the deleted replies are people being unkind on here?

The recent deleted post was made by a spammer which is against MN rules.

Generally people are very supportive on the bariatric threads.

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 14/11/2021 09:02

Has anyone done a lot of research and have any recommendations of private companies that offer the surgery?
I don’t think I quite qualify under NHS guidelines.

Hippychicken1 · 14/11/2021 23:20

My observations of surgery as I’m 4 years post op
Eventually your appetite comes back not as much as before but if you stop watching what you eat and eat the wrong stuff then it’s easy to put on some weight
There is generally a golden period of about 18 months - 2 years of steady weight loss and stability of weight
Then from what I’ve seen from others that I know have had surgery - and I know a fair amount your weight can creep up slowly
However the men I know that had this surgery seen to keep it off but the women can struggle a bit
However the good thing is that when you do put on weight it’s a damm sight easier to lose it than before
I put on half a stone on holiday recently two weeks AI
But I lost it within 3 weeks of being back home and eating my regular food
Prior to the op I would never have lost that amount of weight it would have taken me 3 months or so to have lost half a stone

Hippychicken1 · 14/11/2021 23:27

@Teaandtonic
To be honest like the other poster mentioned if your very overweight the chances of you getting to 90 would be slim - no pun intended 😂 it’s unlikely that you will be healthy @ 90 if your very overweight
My father was very overweight and was offered surgery but he didn’t want it.
He was also diabetic and this combined with his weight was essentially what he died of eventually at 74
Being very overweight especially in older ages cause numerous complications
One of the main ones I think is the risk of diabetes which in turn can cause problems with your body swelling loss eyesight problems diabetic tremors to mention just a few of what my dad suffered from towards the end of his life

pcosstruggler · 15/11/2021 10:37

Hi @Jubilate . How are you getting on with things?
I had my psychology appt last week and the psychologist said it was definitely the right decision to go down this route for me which made me feel more confident!
