I have always struggled with my weight but put it down to secret eating/too big portions etc.

Since lockdown, I have gone from eating 3 meals a day to 1.
I did extreme keto for a couple of months but didn't lose any weight and got really bad headaches so now I do low carb. I wasn't losing weight so I now have high carb/cheat days which seems to actually help! And since April I have lost about 3lbs in total.

For the amount I eat and the fact I am on my feet all day I would hope/want to be losing a lot more than this!

So I was wondering if anyone takes any diet pills to help with weight loss?
I am worried about side effects so I haven't trusted the reviews online incase they are fake.

There are also way more women who make 6 figure sums in here than there is 6 figure sums jobs. Take everything here, especially these extremes with a pinch of salt. Some stuff here is downright dangerous imho

I do agree but there are always people who seem surprised that people can eat so many/few calories but there genuinely is as everyone's metabolism is different.

Else people would only have to go a few days eating low-calorie and be super skinny but unfortunately it doesn't work like that.

That's fine.

It's quite concerning that you are tired yet not losing weight.

Bluntness100 · 29/11/2020 18:24

No one thinks you’re lying that’s not what being honest with yourself means. Sorry if that came out wrong, I mean you’re clearly eating a lot more than you think you are. Honestly op. No one is five foot seven and maintaining fourteen and a half stone on a thousand calories a day. No one.

So you need to start measuring your portions, looking at your ingredients, weighing them, counting everything that goes in your mouth.

For low carb as said, forget it, it’s either all in or all out. It’s a way of life. It’s not a calorie controlled diet and it naturally reduces your appetite. It’s fine if it doesn’t suit you, so you need to find something else.

If it’s calorie counting then you need to start weighing everything out.

Well no, that makes no sense...

Dietpill · 29/11/2020 18:25

Do you have cheat days every two days, so every third day you go over your calories?

I have a similar calorie limit every day.

But I have what I class as cheat days every two weeks - higher calorie and carb day.

But every third day I will have some carb like pasta or potato with my dinner but stay low calorie.

OP, have you posted about this before?

Dietpill · 29/11/2020 18:31

OP, have you posted about this before?

I have posted asking for advice before yes but it was a while ago now and that's how I started keto/low carb as I got a lot of great advice and I was eating a lot of fruit and the advice was to reduce the sugar/carb intake.

Bluntness100 · 29/11/2020 18:34

As said, forget the low carb op.

Low carb is basically you sufficiently deplete your carb stores so your body starts to burn fat for energy and not carbs,

This is called ketosis.

To get your body in this state you need a min of three to four days, then about two weeks for your body to start to burn fat efficiently. You should aim for below 20 grams for this two weeks.

Doing it for two days means you never get into fat burning mode. I am unsure what extreme keto is, I assume you ate only meat and eggs? Because as said, even cucumber has carbs, it’s nigh on impossible to go no carb.

So if you then say you need to do a low calorie diet, and we need to assume you’re under estimating your calorie intake, then start to weigh your portions inc your raw ingredients, things like my fitness pal notoriously under estimate, but there are many resources on line,

I think when you start to do that, you will see a difference, if you are already doing that, then I think you need to see a doctor.

Hayeahnobut · 29/11/2020 18:36

Your food intake sounds all over the place. Your body doesn't know what to expect or when, so it's not going to burn calories efficiently.

Have a look at the British Heart Foundation plan. It's a traditional balanced diet, if you follow what's in the sheet you will lose weight, and you won't be knackered. You can adapt it more to your tastes as time goes on, but for a start give your body chance to be properly nourished and relearn how to work.

I have really struggled with weight loss but am finally doing fairly well. I have gone through The Slimming Clinic. The consultations are over the phone now with a GMC registered Doctor. Have a look at their website, happy to answer any questions

Dietpill · 29/11/2020 18:46

No just carbs under 20g a day (some keto can be up to 50g a day) to put your body into ketosis.
I tend to do low carb now as I am more likely to overeat fruit/pasta/potatoes than lettuce/cucumber/eggs etc.

Have a look at the British Heart Foundation plan.

I will have a look at this thank you.

I have gone through The Slimming Clinic.

I will also have a look at this too thank you. Were you also struggling to lose weight on a low calorie diet?

Bluntness100 · 29/11/2020 18:57

Op, most keto diets say to stay within 15 to thirty grams a day. Fifty would only work when your fully fat adapted and even then only for some.

And for the first two weeks you need to stay within that 15-30. You’d have to really know what you’re doing to increase it past the thirty ans it’s not generally recommended when in weight loss phase. Fifty is more maintenance.

It doesn’t matter though, you don’t go into keto in two days.

That’s why you’re tired, your body runs on carbs and you run low on them two days out of three, before stocking up against but you’re never going to get into ketosis in two days, because you don’t stick at it long enough. It’s just a really bad diet.

Start weighing your food, I think you will be surprised. I would estimate your portion size is twice what it should be,

If you don’t want to weigh your food inc ingredients like oils etc, then you can try ready meals for a period, as these are calorie counted for you.

MawkishHawk · 29/11/2020 18:58

Did they prescribe meds OrangesandLemons?

I’m definitely trying orlistat on non work days first!

MawkishHawk · 29/11/2020 19:01

Did your private blood test also check iron and b12 btw? Are you taking vitamin D supplements (we all should be)?

OurChristmasMiracle · 29/11/2020 19:07

Orlistat does work but you can eat very very small amounts of fat- not more than 30% of any meal can be fat otherwise you will get side effects.

Also you may be walking but unless you are actually walking fast you aren’t likely to be burning many calories. I walk 3.2 miles to work in just under an hour and that burns around 250-300 calories so a half hour walk would probably be burning max of 150 calories and you wouldn’t be getting your heart rate elevated enough to be burning fat. I bought a fitness tracker and that really helped so that I could see when I was actually elevating my heart rate enough to burn fat.

I also think you need to consider whether you put sugar in your Coffee? Milk? Etc it all adds calories that people don’t count. So will squash- are you measuring how much squash you are putting in each glass- a lot of people use more than a “serving” size but will only count it as one serving as it’s one glass but in fact it’s more.

If you are lacking energy it may be worth adding in a decent b12 and multi vitamin supplement. B12 will help with energy and if you are anaemic iron may also help.

I also found that the more exercise I did the more energy I had- it was hard at first but now it’s become second nature.

Dietpill · 29/11/2020 19:07

Op, most keto diets say to stay within 15 to thirty grams a day. Fifty would only work when your fully fat adapted and even then only for some.

I just followed the dietdoctor and did it for 4 months which said to do between 20-50g depending on the types of food you typically eat. If I lost weight I would have carried it on as I found I had little appetite and lots of energy but I had really bad headaches and my hair kept falling out.

Did your private blood test also check iron and b12 btw? Are you taking vitamin D supplements (we all should be)?

No it didn't it was just a thyroid test. I do have multi-vitamins but to be honest I always forget to take them. I am going to be more strict at taking them from now on though and it will probably help with my tiredness too!

OP posts:
Dietpill · 29/11/2020 19:09

I think this could be part of the problem because I am on my feet all day and do a lot of walking but it is very low intensity and my body is used to it so I am probably not burning many calories.

OP posts:
SchrodingersImmigrant · 29/11/2020 19:10

Very good question! I see your answer. You should be taking them. As pp said, we all should. It will absolutely help with tiredness.

Bluntness100 · 29/11/2020 19:13

What will help with tiredness is do not reduce your carbs for two days out of three. You’re not in keto, so you’d just be proper knackered and lacking in energy on that cycle.

PolarnOPirate · 29/11/2020 19:24

You sound like me OP, you should definitely seek professional help from a trained doctor/dietician.

Do you think I should not have carbs on the third day? Or have carbs all three days?

I've mentioned things before when I've gone in for other things and they are just a bit dismissive and say things like just eat less cake etc and if I say I don't eat cake they don't seem to believe me.

OP posts:
SchrodingersImmigrant · 29/11/2020 19:35

Like an actual dietitian told you to just eat less cake? Did you report them?

Dietpill · 29/11/2020 19:37

No it was a doctor that I went to see for something else.

OP posts:
SchrodingersImmigrant · 29/11/2020 19:38

That's ridiculous. I would put a complaint in and I am usually the one letting things go

Yeah. It’s really shit. You need to find a specialist, not a general practitioner. I’m paying £500ish for 6 sessions with a dietician, I have a feeling it will be worth it.
