Has anyone tried Orlistat?

Hi Ladies (and Gents!)

I wonder if anyone has tried Orlistat and can give any feedback on your experience with it?

Over lockdown like so many of us, I have piled on the lbs and now find myself unable to fit into any of my clothes and I’m feeling really down and miserable. I’m currently sitting at 12st and I’m only 5ft 2”. I feel terrible about my weight and dread the prospect of Christmas because I’ll only pile on more!

Looking forward to any replies.

Best wishes,

SophSmile

I'm sure there's a section of my bowel laying on the tarmac that I ain't ever getting back! Loose stools is a slight understatement Shock
SphJane · 12/11/2020 07:39

These sound awful!!

I work in the healthcare sector and do home visits most days so having an accident at work just isn’t an option hahaha!!

Lol. I think you have your answer my friend.... Grin

Well this is disappointing! I've just been prescribed it to have alongside a slimming world diet. I ground to a halt 4 weeks in, and plan to take it to get me over the stall.

I guess I'll have to plan carefully then!

I've 8 stone to lose, and am following SW very carefully. I can't afford to stall or I'll give up. I think I'll end up with bariatric surgery, to be honest.

Wear a, heavy duty 'pad' that's all I'm saying...

This thread is hilarious😁

Awful stuff. Had absolutely no warning anything was going to happen. Then heard a horrendous noise and orange oil everywhere 🤢. The only positive was I had just got home from IKEA. I had white trousers on. Thank God it didn't happen there.

TheQueef · 12/11/2020 09:37

Two words.
Anal seepage.
They are on the info leaflet but imo not emphasised enough.

And it's suspiciously like the oil that settles on a cold takeaway Madras so no curries ever after.

Plan your meals carefully.

For example I don't know at breakfast so don't need one. My lunches have no fat content either or very low. My dinners tend to be quite fatty so I take one for that.
If the effect is not instant then I just go to the toilet in morning when yeah... it's not pretty.Grin

I rarely eat out or at other's people's houses so I'm fine with not taking one then either.

After the first two weeks it was actually quite regular and predictable. No accidents ..yet

picklemewalnuts · 12/11/2020 11:35

That's good to know, Bubble! I'm a bit unsure- I'm not eating much fat so shouldn't have much trouble, but then wouldn't have much effect either!
I'll try for a month and see what happens. When you have a huge amount to lose, you can't afford not to take every option going!

EwwDavid · 12/11/2020 11:41

It’s awful. Do not use it.

It should only be used by people who are dangerously obese IMO, and need to drop weight quickly because they’re one chip away from a heart attack.

You are nowhere near this stage and only need to lose a stone or two. You can easily lose that with healthy changes. There is no “quick fix”.

I lost a stone with intermittent fasting and it worked really well for me. There are threads on here about it, maybe give that a try?

nitsandwormsdodger · 12/11/2020 11:42

I pooped orange in the bed

EwwDavid · 12/11/2020 11:45

And as we’re all sharing, I ate pesto and farted green oil.

I was only a few pounds overweight too, there was absolutely no need for me to be taking it. So, so stupid. One of the stupidest things I’ve ever done.

Hopeislost · 12/11/2020 11:48

I've tried it. I think it works because it makes you too scared to eat anything with fat in, rather than the fat it removes from your diet.

Orlistat removes a third of the fat in your diet and they recommend no more than 15g fat a meal. So it removes up to 5g of fat = 45 calories per meal? That's nothing!

Do you have any time off coming soon? It would be the best time to start them, judge the effects and how they interact with your diet, timings and see if there are any changes you can make.
IHaveBrilloHair · 12/11/2020 12:49

Just eat a few of those sugar free gummy bears after each meal, job's a good un.

picklemewalnuts · 12/11/2020 12:56

I work from home, not many hours. Lots of opportunities to try it out safely.

I'll let you know!

I need to eat flax and or chia, chia is 1/3rd fat, so that's 100 out of 138 calories saved on an ounce.

If I eat a boiled egg, 5.3g fat, so 1.7g fat = 15 cal saved. Doesn't sound like much, but takes a boiled egg down to 60cal.

I'm not at risk of dropping dead from a heart attack- but after a lifetime of trying to be careful, I am still morbidly obese.

Inpeace · 12/11/2020 12:59

I took it on prescription.

It worked - by aversion to food due to the side effects graphically covered above.

I then got the common side effect of rapid weight loss - gall stones, creating a temporary eating phobia - gall stones being the worst pain I ever had.

Three ambulance trips to A&E and the joy of wishing I were dead when they took my gas and air away to assess me. Then emergency surgery.

Then put all the weight back on.

I won’t go on because that should hopefully be enough info!

Oh actually I got some nice photos of me slim - they fill me with dreadful memories when I look at them!

SphJane · 12/11/2020 13:57

Wow it seems some people have pretty good results but these side effects sound horrendous. To get to a healthy BMI, I need to lose just over 2 stone. I have cut out snacks, I don’t drink fizzy juice, I don’t eat puddings and I have a relatively healthy lunch, usually soup or a sandwich. I do my 10K steps every day, as I said previously it’s just my dinners that kill me, it would be great to have a little push in the right direction!

Sleep on a towel and buy some biological wash powder.

TheQueef · 12/11/2020 14:11

And dig all your grundies out, it ruins pants.

sunflowershine · 12/11/2020 14:21

I have. I've been taking it (Alli from Boots, not the prescription strength) since June. I've lost 4 stone and am now a healthy weight.

I've not had an awful experiences on it, but that's because I am really mindful not to eat high fat foods, if you do that then you will feel the after effects!

Good luck. Tbh I managed ro get constipated while on them(more than once) so maybe not the best person to give advice.Grin
