Shorties trying to lose weight!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 29/09/2020 12:02

I started my fatbusting journey a couple of weeks ago and my plan is to document my progress here.

So far I've been doing a fair bit of cardio - 5 times per week - and I'm hoping this will help me get rid of some lbs. I posted a thread on AIBU looking for people's advice on only using exercise to lose weight but the general consensus is that no, I need to calorie restrict too. Boo! is what I say to that but maybe I need to face facts that I'm no longer a spring chicken and need to make a concerted effort with food too to shed anything!

Anyone want to join me?! @neverenoughchelseaboots

Current weight: 60kg/132lbs
Target: 50kg/110lbs
Height: 5'0 :(
Age: 39

@Knittingnanny you sound little and cute! I bet you were a fantastic teacher to the littlies!
@SwimmingOnEggshells - good things come in small packages and it is good for you that in your family you are not short!

The radio4 programme section on Shorties in Woman’s Hour was too brief. It did not really cover the issue well. They mentioned Elaine Paige who is only 4’11”.

WhistlersandJugglers · 27/01/2021 09:40

Hi shorties. I haven't posted in ages because I never got back into any kind of routine for January. Combination of hurting my back and having 3 homeschooling teenagers in the house. They have pretty much a full school day online so I can only tiptoe around the kitchen and living room from 9 to 4.
I've been doing gentle pilates in the evening and my back feels like it has settled so definitely time to lose the Christmas weight now. I'm 10 stone 8 lbs today so up half a stone from before Christmas.

Knittingnanny · 27/01/2021 09:41

Modern, ah thank you. I did love my job most of the time.
Drizzly here today but going to try and get 6000 steps in somehow.

Knittingnanny · 27/01/2021 09:43

Whistlers, I can’t imagine homeschooling three teenagers! Are they constantly seeking food?

WhistlersandJugglers · 27/01/2021 10:11

To be fair I don't have much involvement in the schooling part. The problem is that we are rural and have fairly dodgy broadband and there is no signal in any of the bedrooms. It's the opposite of normal life with teenagers - I'm the one in my bedroom all day.
The oldest appears to have a sandwich after every class. I think some days we get on to a third loaf of bread and they probably consume the same amount of cheese as some of the smaller countries.

WhistlersandJugglers · 27/01/2021 10:38

Before Covid I worked in a job where I was on my feet for a good part of the day and between lockdowns I volunteer in a role where I'd be standing for hours at a time. I think being mostly sedentary is really bad for my weight and my back.

Knittingnanny · 27/01/2021 10:58

Oh the bread consumption! I remember it well. My boys could get through a loaf each in their teenage days. I had to limit free access to everything except bread and fruit as they could also put away cereal by the box!
I can remember baking batches of fairy cakes ( now called cupcakes!) and them being consumed hot from the cooling racks before they even had a chance to have icing put on.
All tall and slim throughout though

neverenoughchelseaboots · 27/01/2021 13:32

These tales of hungry children make me quite envious! DD barely eats a thing. She could run on a banana and bowl of cereal all day, it's a constant battle. The only thing she will eat copious amounts of without encouragement is butter. No, not bread and butter - butter. 🤢

I have to keep repeating to myself the old adage 'a child won't starve itself'....

Knittingnanny · 27/01/2021 15:59

I know your pain never enough. I was on an ancient thread called resistant eaters here on mumsnet for years. My youngest had serious food phobia/ aversion from 8 months to 19 years so his intake consisted of white bread in massive amounts, banana, carrot ( raw), chicken ( thinly sliced doused in tomato sauce and not touching anything else). , skips, plain rich tea biscuits and bizarrely sticks of cucumber dipped in garlic dip!!! I was terrified he was going to die but came back from his second year at university eating most things although stil adverse to food touching a different food. He was always on the small size but fit healthy and was hardly ever ill.
On our last walk he was telling me about a meat delivery he and his flatmate were working their way through, kangaroo burgers, wild boar and partridge! He claims he can’t remember being “ fussy”
Fussy?! I went through years of worry! I can certainly remember the battles. I am ashamed to say that in desperation on a few occasions I tried to force feed him. He seems quite normal thank goodness and can’t remember that happening.

Knittingnanny · 27/01/2021 15:59

And as I’ve said before is now not a shortie!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 27/01/2021 18:40

Getting kids to eat a varied diet is difficult! I feel your pain @neverenoughchelseaboots, we had similar with DS who's now 5. And that's so reassuring to hear @Knittingnanny 😀

When DS was 3 all he'd eat is beige food, but he now likes cucumber, every fruit you can possibly think of, broccoli and even carrots! He still won't eat salad, beans, soup and lots of other things but he's only 5 so I can't expect him to like goats cheese or a Thai red curry for example Smile. I made a quiche tonight and he actually liked it and it was full of tomatoes and red onion. To be fair, he liked the pastry the most but it's a start!

Diet is going ok for me:
Coffee for breakfast
Tinned tomato soup for lunch (gross I know but I ate late and it was all I had time for)
Quiche Lorraine for dinner with green beans
G&T before dinner

I NEED this thread.

Current weight: I have no idea but I'm a size 12-14.
Target: 100lbs.
More realistic target: 110lbs.
Height: 5'0.
Age: 38.
Current strategy: fasting and calorie cycling.

Knittingnanny · 28/01/2021 13:44

Pusheen, hello and good luck with starting your reducing journey.
I seem to be back on track food wise and have managed good walks this week so far. Got the two littlest grandchildren 2-5 pm today so got a quick easy tea planned for us when we have taken them home, omelettes with loads of veg chopped up like a frittata.
Will send the other half of the packet of chocolate buttons home with the 3 year old or else they will end up tipped in my mouth whilst I’m cooking our healthy tea! I thought I was over my chocolate addiction but seemingly not. I’m still finding that keeping a food diary ( old fashioned pencil and notebook type) and not missing out anything is the way to keeping control of my eating , especially portion sizes.
I’ve planned a long walk with a friend tomorrow afternoon so keeping fingers crossed for the rain to hold off again.

PusheenLove · 28/01/2021 13:58

@Knittingnanny thank you :)

I have a serious chocolate addiction. And am a cereal binger. fml.

SwimmingOnEggshells · 28/01/2021 14:07

Welcome @PusheenLove. I'm the same height, a year older and I've a similar target weight; you're in good company!

@SwimmingOnEggshells sucks being a five footer, doesn't it? Grin

I swear, if I gain as much as a pound you can instantly see it EVERY-WHERE

SwimmingOnEggshells · 28/01/2021 16:13

@pusheenLove so true and it's not fair, we don't carry weight well when we're this short. The only 'small' positive is that when I lose weight people notice it very quickly too!

I never looked at it that way.

I also think being petite makes you look younger. Every cloud..

2019user44 · 29/01/2021 00:07

Can I join please! So much to lose but am motivated to start. 5'0 and think about 4 stone to shift!!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 29/01/2021 08:15

Of course you can join @2019user44, join us and our small statured struggles.

Weigh in Friday and no loss for me today. I blame lockdown.

Morningmaeve · 29/01/2021 08:35

Hello all - I have pretty much maintained this week at 9st 3.8lb which was expected as I have totally lost focus. Not sure what happened but I just wasn't in the right mind set. Will aim to move on and reset for the coming week. I blame lockdown too @SwimmingOnEggshells - some weeks a really tough. Welcome @2019user44 and @PusheenLove

neverenoughchelseaboots · 29/01/2021 08:50

An unexpected and deserved gain for me this week tipping me back to over 9stone at 9st 0.4lbs. It was a week of household birthday celebrations, which are all food related when there's nothing else to do!

Also had one (planned) night off dry January for it and was a huge anticlimax. So I've decided to stay mostly dry for a few months rather than drinking only at weekends, which was my original plan.

I'm in my running kit ready for lunch break though and confident another week without wine and I'll see a loss by Friday.

Welcome @2019user44 and @PusheenLove. And I hope all is well @Beroltheperil, not heard from you in a while. x

PusheenLove · 29/01/2021 09:22

@neverenoughchelseaboots well done for dry jan. Rather you than me! I live for my nightly glass of red.

Beroltheperil · 29/01/2021 09:50

Hi @neverenoughchelseaboots thanks for tagging me. I managed to maintain a 9lb loss including over the Christmas period but for the last few weeks it has all gone to pot. I have been trying to cook more veggie meals and I think as a result have had more carbs, fat etc and I have definitely been drinking too much alcohol, feeling so miserable and unmotivated. I'm trying to turn it around because I'm back up to almost 10 stone. Rubbish!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 29/01/2021 09:51

Yes I've been thinking about her too @neverenoughchelseaboots. Hope she's doing well.

That's good news that having a drink wasn't as nice as you expected! Certainly easier to stay off it if you're not enjoying it.

And fair play getting out to exercise. I've been very lax with my exercise, I'm going to start back on Monday with my exercise bike.
