Shorties trying to lose weight!

I started my fatbusting journey a couple of weeks ago and my plan is to document my progress here.

So far I've been doing a fair bit of cardio - 5 times per week - and I'm hoping this will help me get rid of some lbs. I posted a thread on AIBU looking for people's advice on only using exercise to lose weight but the general consensus is that no, I need to calorie restrict too. Boo! is what I say to that but maybe I need to face facts that I'm no longer a spring chicken and need to make a concerted effort with food too to shed anything!

Anyone want to join me?! @neverenoughchelseaboots

Current weight: 60kg/132lbs
Target: 50kg/110lbs
Height: 5'0 :(
Age: 39

Just realised I forgot the word 'negative' when talking about my test results!

neverenoughchelseaboots · 23/01/2021 14:52

Oh that's good news @purplegirl13 about your test results. And I hope your mum continues to improve. x

cannonball8726 · 23/01/2021 17:07

Hi all. Sorry to hear about your mum @purplegirl13!

It's such a crap time at the moment - trying to use ways other than food to lift my mood. Like you guys, though, I'm finding it hard! At least it was a sunny day and nice to get out for a walk.

Weighed myself this morning.

Starting weight 56.1kg
Now 54.9kg
Target 51kg (would love to be 48kg like I was four years ago - but better to start with something more realistic...?!)

Knittingnanny · 23/01/2021 21:45

I’ve not lost anymore still at pre Xmas 9 st 3 but yesterday I decided to up my steps. I do have knee arthritis which can make walking painful but yesterday and today managed 2.5 miles , 8000 steps each day. That’s an improvement for me!
No Christmas goodies left in the house and I’m not buying any more snack stuff
My typical daily intake i
B ( late as trying to do 16/8) yogurt and berries
Afternoon snacks fruit or handful of nuts
D today homemade chicken casserole with extra green veg
Yog and banana for pudding
I drink very weak tea with semi skimmed milk on and off all day, teetotal but think I need to up my plain water intake.
Hoping the weather next week is better than forecast so I can continue the 8000 steps a day
Best wishes to you all

modernfemininity · 23/01/2021 23:31

What lovely updates. Thank you all for letting us in on the current picture. I like the sound of size 8’s and new dresses, and I like hearing the meals recorded, and my heart goes out to you lot with the uphill struggles with family, children, stress levels and health issues.
I am tired and off to the land of nod. Just wanted to quickly send massive congratulations especially to @neverenoughchelseaboots for losing over a stone throughout the lockdowns, when more or less every one has gained weight, and not only that but you have hit your target and are under 9 stone!
Fantastic work and a well deserved feeling it is, to feel trim after slowly losing the pounds.
(I have been on the gain but also maintaining somewhat better than I thought I would).

Keep the updates coming!

SwimmingOnEggshells · 24/01/2021 12:49

@purplegirl13 that's great news! Covid is just so bloody weird the way some people catch it and others don't. I suppose all colds and viruses are like that, but it's very strange all the same. I hope your mum starts to feel better soon, sending you guys positivity!

I'm still stalling here with dieting but Monday-Friday is where I normally make progress so I'm back to being super-strict tomorrow. And one more week of wfh and kids at home because we have childcare sorted starting Monday-week - woo! Life will be a lot easier then.

purplegirl13 · 24/01/2021 18:28

@cannonball8726 what are you currently doing to lift your mood? other than the go-to comfort of food?

@Knittingnanny not having the Christmas treats in the house will do wonders. Fantastic news on the walking, 8k steps each day is very impressive!

@SwimmingOnEggshells My mum is still extremely tired (and I think little confused, which is worrying) but still no worsening of cough/breathlessness. I feel reassured by that, but then panicky because really who knows what will happen over the next few days. Stupid, stupid virus.

On a positive note, I am now booked in for a covid vaccine next weekend!

Today:
B - cappuccino
L - red lentil & chickpea soup, with sourdough toast & goats cheese
D - tofu & pak choi stir fry, and rice
Snack - 2 large squares of dark choc

purplegirl13 · 24/01/2021 18:30

@SwimmingOnEggshells forgot to say, good news about the childcare!

Angliski · 24/01/2021 19:22

Hello, just caught up on the thread- well done everyone- some good losses in there.

I’m down to 13st 10. Still an enormous amount to go but if I can get to under 13 by my husbands birthday at end of feb that would be great.

Today I went for a run- first time in about 6 months and was easier than I thought! I’m going back to week five in couch to five k.

Today:

Brunch- bacon egg and mushies and tomato with small pieces Dof toast
Dinner- mixed veg soup and steak salad.

I accidentally ate a doughnut in between.

Now to bed!

Knittingnanny · 24/01/2021 19:56

Purple girl13 thank you, only managed 6000 today but meeting my only local son tomorrow for a socially distanced walk and he will spur me on as only a laid back furloughed 29 year old sports fan can do!
I’m back to 900/950 calories a day to try and get back on track. If I go above 1500 I put on weight, over 1300 I stay put.

purplegirl13 · 25/01/2021 12:36

@Angliski good job on the run. I want to start C25K but I desperately need a sports bra, and have been having a nightmare buying online - I'll be getting myself to Bravissimo as soon as I can (whenever that might be).

@Knittingnanny 6k steps is also good - I think getting out and moving is half the battle. Isn't if a pain that we have so little calories to work with?? There is another thread where a poster is posting images of their daily food intake, but eating 1900kcals daily and I was incredibly jealous of their 500kcal+ breakfast.

I am focusing on my eating right now as a distraction. As it's something I can control when the other parts of my life are uncertain. I just really be channeling some energy into job hunting but I've just hit a wall and not in the right head-space.

Today:
B - cappuccino
S - cucumber and houmous, some dark choc
L - black bean soup
D - veggie pie, mash, peas & gravy

Knittingnanny · 25/01/2021 16:46

Well I weighed again this morning and have managed to lose a 1lb so down to 9st 2 so that has given me a boost to stay on the healthy eating path .
Just limped back from my walk with active fit 29 yr old son and was delighted to see on my app that I did 3.8 miles, can’t believe it.
Salmon with med veg tonight ( rice for husband but I’ll up the veg for me) and you with berries. I nearly fell off the biscuit wagon last night but I cut up an apple into tiny pieces and ate them very slowly.
Best wishes everyone

Knittingnanny · 25/01/2021 16:47

Ps if I ate 1900 calories a day I would probably gain more than a pound a week

Knittingnanny · 25/01/2021 16:52

On another note, I’ve walked once a week with youngest son and we have covered our local coastline circular walks, the same walks I’ve done hundreds of times since having first baby in 1982, accompanied by various bikes, scooters, skateboards, footballs, cricket bats, fishing nets etc. I was very disappointed to hear that son number three says he can’t remember them!
He could however, remember all of the football pitches and cricket squares on the routes though!

neverenoughchelseaboots · 25/01/2021 19:52

@Knittingnanny your walk sounds really lovely, and how special to re-do them again with your son. Your mentions of scooters and bikes makes me shudder though, I'm still adjusting to child-pace walking without additional implements!

@Angliski good effort on the running! Especially in winter.

And thank you so much @modernfemininity, you always have such generous words of encouragement for us. And I'm finding your 'delay not deny' mantra popping into my head regularly now.

Knittingnanny · 25/01/2021 22:51

Neverenough, thank you , got the long walk in before the rain comes tomorrow! Got two grandchildren tomorrow afternoon for a home schooling session. Grandad doing art with the ten year old and I’m doing phonics and baking with the 5 year old, I’m going to try hard to make sure everything edible is taken home so I’m not tempted at my danger hour of 8-9 pm.

modernfemininity · 26/01/2021 10:26

Right now - Woman’s Hour on radio4 is talking about Being A Shortie!!

purplegirl13 · 26/01/2021 11:02

@modernfemininity I missed it! I will catch it when it's available online later. I'd also like to echo @neverenoughchelseaboots about your words of encouragement - you do come across very lovely!

p.s I was wondering where I'd picked up 'delay ,not deny' from :)

@Knittingnanny yes, do send the children home with any baked goods

Happy Tuesday everyone x

purplegirl13 · 26/01/2021 11:06

Before I forget...

Today:
B - cappuccino
L - mushroom soup with some sourdough toast
S - Kefir yogurt drink
D - rice and dhal
S - a few dark choc truffles (that some lovely friends sent to me as a pick me up - after a horrible week)

SwimmingOnEggshells · 26/01/2021 11:30

Ooo I would've liked to have listened to that! I'll see if I can get a podcast of it later.

Doing ok here mentally but I don't think I'll have a loss this week.

Yesterday was:
Breakfast: Coffee
Lunch: Celeriac soup and one slice of cheese
Dinner: Homemade chips and fried cod in panko breadcrumbs with homemade tartare sauce Blush (my only saving grace with that dinner is that my portion wasn't big)

Today is going to be mediocre, possibly carb heavy as I'm working late tonight so pasta is on the menu as it's easy:
Breakfast: coffee + banana (the banana wasn't planned but my 3yo had one bite and then wanted to put it in the bin, I don't like food waste!)
Lunch: the rest of the celeriac soup
Dinner: pasta arrabiata

I'm also very envious of the 1900cals a day and people still able to lose weight...! and breakfast of 500cals?! not a chance I'd lose weight if I ate that amount of food for breakfast.

Yes they’ve gone home with choc chip cookies, an apple crumble and a watercolour painting of a houseplant! Year 6 art homework. Yr R grandchild did the baking and then we played with Barbies instead of the official literacy activity, I called it “ speaking and Listening”
I think you are all amazing if you are home schooling. Today made me wonder how on earth I was able to be an infant teacher for 38 years!
Mummy laid on the sofa at home and ate cake all afternoon til we returned them. She is not a shortie so can eat more than me.

Knittingnanny · 26/01/2021 17:27

I don’t know why I’m a shortie, my parents were tall, my sister is very tall and my three sons are tall as are my phew. My 2 daughter in laws are tall slim and elegant, my stepdaughters are tall, the eldest ( 10 years) grandson is my height already. I’m like a gene blip!

Knittingnanny · 26/01/2021 17:28

Nephews

SwimmingOnEggshells · 26/01/2021 20:57

Your grandkids are so lucky @knittingnanny, you sound like you did so much with them. I'm knackered from just reading it all!

I wish I was a gene blip Grin because my whole family are tiny and my DH is also short so our children are destined to be short in stature.

Knittingnanny · 26/01/2021 21:06

Swimming , thank you, I know I’m lucky that I have 4 local grandchildren but sad my others are abroad and it will be over 2 years by the time I get to see them again. And I can only do it as they go home after 3 hours and I go off duty!
I miss the lovely teaching stuff but not the tedious part ie non child stuff.
I’m now painting my nails to stop me ripping open a large bag of crisps which want to jump out of the cupboard into my hands.
