I think this thread is exactly what I need, some gentle encouragement!

MushMonster · 16/11/2020 17:51

Well done @WobbleWhenIRun!
It is a maintain for me this week, at 83 kg.
I have done well in the gym, and not that bad with the diet, so another of "those" thingsGrin
I am looking forward to breaking the 80 kg barrier!

MushMonster · 16/11/2020 17:54

Enjoy your maintenance @morningtoncrescent62.
And welcome to the group @TessTackle

TessTackle · 16/11/2020 17:55

Thank you @MushMonster

MushMonster · 16/11/2020 18:53

You are quite close to my weight, so we can do good company to each other.
I do 1200 cal per day. Gym 3 to 4 times per week, weights, rowing and bike. And walk to work 40 as much as possible, circa the 5 days per week.
Well that is the goal! In general I am not bad at sticking to it.

morningtoncrescent62 · 16/11/2020 23:05

One Xmas is done and dusted, I'm going to look to schedule regular maintenance breaks to help me understand that side of it a bit more. I know it sounds a bit odd, but I think learning to incorporate the occasional KFC (other takeaways are available) and not gain weight is actually pretty important to long term success so good on you for doing it

I knew you'd understand, @WobbleWhenIRun! I'm very happy with how this maintenance fortnight has gone. One more day tomorrow, then I'm back on the diet on Wednesday. I've felt much more able to make choices without stressing about them than I did the first time round. I think the experience of painlessly getting back on the wagon last time was very helpful for me. Fingers crossed it'll be just as easy this time round.

@MushMonster well done on sticking with the diet and exercise. Those pesky scales not behaving themselves this week!! Hopefully they'll come into line next week.

TessTackle · 17/11/2020 07:46

@MushMonster sounds good!

I’m also aiming for 1200 with a 500 deficit, I work on my feet and also walk in so I try 12-15k steps and I have an exercise bike too.

Hate hate hate the gym so I have to find other ways Grin

How often is everyone weighing?

WobbleWhenIRun · 17/11/2020 08:16

@tesstackle I typically report back on here weekly and use that as my official weigh-in - but am a serial scale stander so have often had one or two sneaky weighs during thw week Grin

@morningtoncrescent62 I totally understand that emerging sense of being more in control that comes with knowing you can switch back and forth between diet and maintenance as a result of a conscious choice, rather than the old cycle of trying and failing. You can choose to eat, and enjoy, a KFC but not have it ruin anything because it's just one meal as part of a broader picture. I definately fell into the all or nothing trap in the past, in which 500 extra cals led to me eating voraciously because suddenly the day/week/month/year(!) was off so I might as well make the most of it. Using a feast/famine cycle instead of gentle moderation. One of the reasons the 50lbs feels surreal to me, is because I've taken this easier and gentler approach, including plenty of treats along the way - so the time has flown by and here I am.

I now am just so cautious about keeping that mindset and not slipping backwards...

TessTackle · 17/11/2020 08:20

@MushMonster I’m a serial stander too but I’ll try to stick to weekly!

@morningtoncrescent62 that mindset is exactly what I’m aiming for, maintenance and not beating myself up any more.
Just got to lose the initial 3 stone I guess.

FatCatThinCat · 17/11/2020 11:12

I try to stick to weekly but more often than not can't stop myself daily. Which is an improvement on the 'every time I go in the bathroom' I used to do.

Once Christmas is done I'm going to save up and buy myself a treadmill. Hopefully by then I'll have lost enough to get a relatively cheaper one. I don't go out for walks because my autistic brain meltsdown if I'm take away from my ritualised tv schedule. But my cunning plan is that I can still watch it if I'm using a treadmill and it's a decent excuse for not doing housework. 'Sorry, no can do, got more km to cover first!'

TessTackle · 17/11/2020 13:52

@FatCatThinCat I must admit I did weigh again this morning Blush

I really do enjoy using my bike in front of the tv, DD is off school “sick” so I’m watching the crown and getting some km in after our 15k step walk.

I bet you’ll be able to get a lovely cheap one in the January sales! Love the housework excuse too.

MushMonster · 17/11/2020 14:05

I try to stick to once per week.
I only have the temptation to peep in weeks like these when I follow the plan but I do not lose. Then the following week I want to check if I am doing any better.
I do have an annoying pattern of platooning in a weight for a while. I am trying not to let it get to me, so do my best not to peep or only twice a week.

As I think some of you know, I only weigh in once a month. I'm in my late 50s with decades of yo-yo dieting behind me, and I'm trying very hard to do things differently this time around. One of the differences is not to let myself get obsessed about weight, which daily checks inevitably lead to for me. So I check up on the last day of the month.

@TessTackle I was 15 stone when I started this time round - at the beginning of lockdown. I've lost more than 4 stone since then, going slowly and steadily. The maintenance fortnight thing grew out of a link @WobbleWhenIRun posted, about diet breaks. I decided to do them, but not call them diet breaks because that sounds too much like a free-for-all! I have terrible control issues around eating. I either diet and control every single thing I consume very tightly until I can do it no longer, or I eat anything and everything and can't seem to stop. I'm using the maintenance fortnights to establish the ability to make sensible choices around food. I'm hopeful that these time-limited 'practices' will help me make the transition to habits I can sustain when I reach the healthy weight range for my height which should be early next year. My long-term aim is never to see 11 stone again, but I don't feel the need to get under 10 stone even though that's near the top of the healthy weight range for me.

FatCatThinCat · 21/11/2020 09:40

I weighed 122.3 kg this morning. That's a whopping 1.8 kg loss this week. I'm well chuffed and that makes up for the misery of cutting milk out of my coffees this week.

MushMonster · 21/11/2020 13:26

Well done @FatCatThinCat! You have found your mojo there! It is falling off quick!
I know what no milky coffee is SadSad
It is one of my main downfalls. No food, but lots of milk, with coffee or tea. Or too much orange juice.

I am stuck here. I have weighted today and thursday. Both 82.5 kg. Which is only a minus 0.5 kg. A loss is a loss. But I feel a bit flat and stuck. I won't give up.

Now Fatcat, do I put the kettle on before or after weighing in? I am doing something wrong here Grin

FatCatThinCat · 21/11/2020 15:42

Weigh before putting the kettle on. Always. The kettle is evil.

MushMonster · 21/11/2020 16:03

I did put it on🥺silly me! This will teach me!Grin

morningtoncrescent62 · 21/11/2020 17:19

Oh well done @FatCatThinCat - both on the loss and on giving up milk in coffee. I've reduced the amount of milk I take in both coffee and tea but try as I might, I can't give it up altogether.

@MushMonster do you have weeks when you lose significant amounts, followed by weeks of little or no loss? Or have you plateaued completely? @WobbleWhenIRun posted a graph of her weight loss and it was a very good way of understanding the overall direction of travel - not always consistent, but consistently downwards. Or maybe just get a new, kinder kettle. Grin

morningtoncrescent62 · 21/11/2020 17:21

It being mid-month I haven't weighed myself, but I can report getting back onto my weight loss regime without difficulty after my maintenance fortnight ended on Wednesday.

MushMonster · 21/11/2020 18:34

@morningtoncrescent62 8 was going down consistently till around 1.5 stones down. The next 0.5 stones and a bit more I lost it has been in two weeks no loss, two weeks large loss. But I have been around the 83 kg for 3 weeks, plus a holiday week. It feels like a little wall. But I keep going! I have not been naughty. So it hopefully will pay off at some point. As you say, the trend is downwards, so I will just revise my food plan and keep with the exercise.
I may weight tomorrow again, before putting the kettle on. I still have a few hours till my official weighing day 😁

WobbleWhenIRun · 22/11/2020 15:53

Week 27

Start weight: 276.8lbs
Current weight: 223.1lbs
Weight lost this week: 2.9lbs
Total weight lost: 53.7lbs

Next goals...

  1. Run 1 mile without stopping - DONE!
  2. Get through Christmas without going backwards - staying the same is fine
  3. Get BMI below 33
10. Get to 220lbs before Xmas

2.9lbs this week is a lot, but I was a bit unwell in the week so that meant I didn't really eat much for a couple of days. Useful Grin

@MushMonster - when your loss slows or stalls it can be really frustrating but as long as the trend is down then I try to remind myself that it's all good. Well done you for sticking to your guns and keeping on.

Also well done @morningtoncrescent62 for getting back on it so easily. I've been really interested to read your experiences of this second round of maintenance.

@FatCatThinCat - 1.8kg loss! Shock. Good for you - you were really due to good shift Grin

morningtoncrescent62 · 22/11/2020 17:41

What brilliant progress, @WobbleWhenIRun. Your 220lb by Christmas target looks very reachable now. @MushMonster looking back through your posts it seems that your body has very definite cycles - you lose a lot some weeks, and appear to lose very little in other weeks. It probably has to do with water retention, possibly linked to your menstrual cycle. But it must be frustrating when you're in the 'no visible progress' weeks, so well done for keeping on it.

My local supermarket has broken out all the Christmas goodies this weekend. Giant boxes of Maltesers and enormous tubes of Jaffa cakes were on every aisle. Not fair! I count it as an achievement that I made it to the checkout without buying any.

TessTackle · 23/11/2020 08:15

Morning!
Congrats on all your losses and maintaining, I find maintaining so much harder than the initial loss..

Weighed in this morning after a not too great week and I’ve lost 1.4kg which I’m happy with.
I just need to get out of some bad eating habits and stop letting DP talk me into tea and biscuits.

I can’t @ for some reason but I like the format of start, current and goal check ins so I’ll borrow that if that’s ok?

Start weight: 82.6kg
Current weight: 81.2kg
Goal weight: 68kg ( I think)

FatCatThinCat · 23/11/2020 18:01

Well done Tess 1.4 kg is a great loss.

Keep going Mush we all hit the doldrums at times. It's hard to not give up, but you can do it.
