Cheers @wobble! I do think we need to be kind to ourselves. This is hard! Sometimes I talk to myself in a way I would never talk to a friend. So I am trying to change that.

Snowdrop30 · 30/07/2020 13:31

A friend of mine who is a psychologist taught me a great trick too, which is really helping. Keep a list of "When I...then I" replacing old unhealthy emotional eating/drinking habits with pleasurable healthy ones. Some of mine are: "When I am feeling sad and stressed, then I will go for a lovely bubble bath with candles", and "When I am watching telly and want a treat to nibble on because it's been a hard day, then I will eat fresh strawberries." I find having a plan ahead of time for something else that you will really enjoy, works.

housemdwaswrong · 30/07/2020 14:04

@Countarthursgroupie 'nice' to see someone else here with arthritis. I have lupus, and joint and tendon/ligament pain is my biggest challenge...as well as sodding steroids. :/

It's tough trying to lose weight with chronic pain and the meds etc. It's a catch 22 for us.

Hope you have some success and it helps with the irritable/downright sadistic joints. :)

Welcome, @WobbleWhenIRun, from another yoyo dieter. I've never added it up, but I've spent my life (since my first diet as a child, I'm now late 50s) in between diets and periods of massive overeating of the unhealthiest food out there.

Like @Snowdrop30 I'm hoping this time it's for good. I started, at the start of lockdown, by cutting out snacks which made an enormous difference - when I say snacks, I mean four-packs of Mars bars at a sitting, and family packs of crisps. Since then I've gradually reduced the amount I'm eating at meals, and also rebalanced so that I'm having more veg and less carbs. I'm still eating a reasonably hearty meal in the evening, but with very much more veg than previously. I'm trying very hard to balance it so that I don't get hungry and obsessive, because that's always led me to going off the wagon and not getting back on with previous diets. And I'm only weighing myself once a month, on the final day - so tomorrow is the day of destiny!!

Welcome, @FatCatThinCat. Good idea to set an interim target, and congratulations on the last three weeks.

YeetYeet · 30/07/2020 16:21

Good luck tomorrow @morningtoncrescent62

The 4 pack of mars bars in an evening is very familiar to me too.. as is the whole pack of pringles, extra large toblerone, 6 pack of walkers etc etc. I was just talking to DS about food funnily enough and he said he didn't think he could eat two packets of crisps in a row. I must have done that a thousand times over the years. I described some of my old eating behaviours and he was ShockShockShock

Getting out of those habits (even if only temporarily) has made me think about how nice some of those foods actually are and most are a bit disappointing I think! (Not all though, I could still demolish a packet of chocolate hobnobs)

MushMonster · 30/07/2020 17:54

@housemdwaswrong well doing gor working hard to lose it! My husband does have arthritis so I can see what it does. He is on a diet too (but cannot join us on the walksSad). I broke my ankle two years ago, very badly. Since then I have put on a massive amount of weight, to the point I struggle with some movements. So I am determined that I am losing it. We can apll inspire and help each other!

MushMonster · 30/07/2020 17:57

I had very sore legs this morning (walked around 2 hours yesterday, plus 6 hours standing at work). So today I am having a rest from exercise, only working to work, 1 hour, and I have to do less standing at work. But tomorrow I am doing weights and core exercises. I can actually feel my legs working hard on the muscles, they feel warm and a bit stiff, I love it!

MushMonster · 30/07/2020 18:05

@FatCatThinCat wow, I want to be like you! That is a lot to lose in 3 weeks! I am so looking forward to my 1st stone! I was much more agile when I was that weight!

FatCatThinCat · 30/07/2020 18:10

I'm ok with eating habits at home. I'm more worried about after covid. Currently we're staying home apart from essential trips. Pre covid we always went out on a Saturday and it always involved food, and where I live most restaurants do help yourself buffets at lunch time. I don't know if my change in appetite will stretch to being in control around the cake buffet at one of our favourite places.

Same with friends. Always meet up for lunch buffet or coffee and cake at the local cafe.

FatCatThinCat · 30/07/2020 18:12

MushMonster I wish I could take credit for it, but it wasn't through effort on my part. All credit goes to the CPAP machine and the practise nurse who suggested I talk to the doctor about sleep apnea.

EsmeShelby · 30/07/2020 19:47

I have lost another pound this week, it hasn't been too hard, but it is boring, and such a long process.

pourmeanotherglass · 30/07/2020 20:38

Weighed myself today and BMI is 30.8, so I'm in the obese range. Could do with losing 3 stone. Managed another 16:8 day of fitting eating into 8 hours, but not the healthiest food as was visiting family. Still not found time to attampt a run, but i do cycle to work most days, 20 mins each way.

Savoury · 30/07/2020 20:45

Welcome to @WobbleWhenIRun and @FatCatThinCat. You're among friends here Daffodil
Let's crack this together!

WobbleWhenIRun · 30/07/2020 20:49

Thanks @Savoury

This might be the friendliest mn thread I've ever been on Smile

Blackbear19 · 30/07/2020 20:50

I've order new scales, I know this is daft but I want to see a graph with my weight drop. I also want to know if I manage to gain muscle the last time I really stuck to a diet my shape changed before I lost any weight. So I suspect I might have gained some muscle in the process but I want to see numbers this time.

housemdwaswrong · 30/07/2020 20:59

@MushMonster ouch. They can be nasty breaks. I'm not surprised you've put weight on! Yep, we can all inspire each other. I fele your husband's pain...got to be worth it in the long run. Thank you x

@blackbear19 not daft at all, it spurs you on like my colour coded word table. Wink

morningtoncrescent62 · 31/07/2020 07:45

@Blackbear19 not at all daft. This is a long, hard road, and whatever keeps you motivated is worthwhile. It's a revelation to me, though, that scales will do all that.

My good news is that I've met my July target of 12 stone 8. That makes a loss of 7lb in July, and a total loss of 32 lb since the start of lockdown.

I've decided on an August target of staying at 12 stone 8. I'm away for two weeks in the middle and I don't want to ruin it by thinking about food all the time. So I'm resigned to putting on some weight while I'm away, and I'll aim to lose it during the time I'm at home.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 31/07/2020 07:59

Blackbear... I got new scales because I didn't believe the old ones. Somehow having digital ones makes it more real and that I was in denial.

It's going to be a hard weekend, healthy eating and exercise wise. DH is taking DDs away for weekend. Temptations to get a massive pizza and chocolate and watch TV all weekend...

I need to walk into town tomorrow, which is 2 miles, so I'll get some exercise!

Grimmauldface · 31/07/2020 08:05

Morning all. I've just been catching up on the thread and reading all the really positive and inspiring posts Grin

Well done everyone who has reached a milestone, taken up a new challenge or is managing to make a change that is helping them stay on track Star

I especially love how realistic everyone is being as it makes losing the weight feel much more achievable.

I did c25k week 1 run 3 yesterday morning and have been sticking to ~1200 kcal a day using MFP so I'm feeling a lot better already. Although I did dip into the dark chocolate last night (85% cocoa) but with minimal guilt which is progress!

SansaClegane · 31/07/2020 11:47

Morning, my fellow fatties!
I'm pleased to announce that I've cracked the first stone! 13st 7 this morning, down from 14st7 when I started on 29 June.
I've still got such a long way to go, but it's encouraging that I've completed a quarter of it. I definitely feel better already and my clothes fit better too.
I really want to be slim enough in winter to wear my "nice" (sharply tailored, woolly, smart) winter coat - had to buy a "fat" coat last year!

Keep up the good work everyone. Feeling very optimistic today that we can all do it 💪

JamRolyPolyAnyone · 31/07/2020 11:50

Good morning everyone. What a beautiful morning ☀️ Too hot for dog walking today. I’ll take dog to the beach this evening when the sun has gone down. Hopefully I’ll get some steps in then.

After my catastrophic attempt at c25k earlier in the week I have stayed on track. Stuck to 1200 calories and the past 2 days have done 13,000 steps.

I don’t know if I’ve lost any weight. I’m saving getting the scales out until Sunday, but I feel so much better.

Despite having weetabix or porridge for breakfast every morning and eating lots of fruit and veg (and drinking lots of water) I am very constipated ☹️ Sorry! Does anyone have any tips please?

SansaClegane · 31/07/2020 11:57

P. S. To add to what snowdrop said earlier: this technique is called Implementation Intention, and it does really work.
You have to mindfully think of situations that might hinder your progress, and consciously set targets. For example: "when I sit down on the sofa in the evening and feel like snacking, I will have an apple". So you have to specify the when and where, and really visualise and connect the "when" and the "then" part. Over time, these processes become automated and have been proven to help with self-regulation.
It's worth a try if you feel like you don't have enough willpower!

Blackbear19 · 31/07/2020 12:18

Morning all, my new scales should be here tomorrow.

SansaClegane well done on that first stone, a stone in a month is fab.

I'm now into day 4, finding 8:16 fairly easy to stick too. I'm another who wants to loose weight for winter.
I ski (not very well) and my ski gear last year was far too tight. I don't want to have to buy new stuff for next year.

YeetYeet · 31/07/2020 12:28

@JamRolyPolyAnyone
I have resorted to milled flaxseed which does the trick.

JamRolyPolyAnyone · 31/07/2020 13:01

Thank you @YeetYeet. Where can I get milled flaxseed from please? And how do I use it?
