there are a few ways to do it really..

most important in ALL cases, is to have a good breakfast. purely and simply, it starts your metabolism going first thing so really IS the most important meal of the day.

next important thing to do: DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. for many reasons... your cellular metabolism needs at least 2 liters of water a day to function normally, and efficiently. this means ALL your bodily functions need it, from kidneys, vital for flushing and maintaining process of toxins...

the bowel need its for good effective peristalsis, to move food along and help break it down. and stop you getting constipated.
apart form all these things we cannot see happening... it actually helps you feel fuller. the most common cause for making us want to eat, ironically is thirst and not hunger... if you drink a good glass of water about half an hour before you eat, it does help you feel fuller quicker when you do eat... if infact you are still hungry

also up your fruit and veg intake for all the healt hbenefits they give you, plus you will fill up on them and be reducing your fat intake at the same time...

erm... trying to think of anyhting else... sack on bananas and apples and berries like strawbs and rasps and blueberrie. the berries are 'speed' foods and actually help you burn calories and are burnt fast them self. they can give your weight loss a boost...

did i mention DRINK WATER? the best water to drink is actually water at room temperature or warmer, rathe than cold. also, sips throughout the day are bette than downing your 2 - 3 liters in 3 or 4 sittings...

( like i do, standing at the sink. )

I know i've gone on and on... i love imparting a bit of my louse... i'm a nurse and miss it SO much being at home with my dd. I specialise in gastro intestinal nursing so diet etc is a big part of my job.. shame i cant stick to it my self.

I will just add though that i have always been successful at losing weight in past if needed, and the biggest thing that sticks out i my mind is, that ALWAYS lose good amounts when i drink the old H2O....

ok, i'll stop typing now!

and thanks for lalou. I hope the week goes really fast too. If my back gets al ittle better, we might go up t stay in his hotel with him, on the train... they know us SO well there and really look after me now.

hope i've helped some of you with my ramblings!!!

susiecutie · 05/10/2007 23:09

PS, i have written why yo need to do stuff as opposed to just saying to do it.. as i think if we understand more why we need to do x y and z then it can be more successful. well, it is for me anyway!

i feel bad at such a long post, i just got carried away

JJ2ndTime · 06/10/2007 04:59

I feel completely deflated as I cannot find any recommendations for safe exercising whilst having SPD (now 20wks pregnant)and when I say exercise I mean burning exercises.

As an avid cyclist (min of 30miles per week) and previous gym member there was bearly a week that passed by without me burning away the cals AND YES I KNOW preganancy is not a time to think about calorie burning BUT my exercise routine was a very good way of releasing stress and keeping generally well

I know cycling is a no no as I did a 15mile course just over a month ago (unaware I had SPD) and probably just offset the whole bloody thing!

ALL TIPS WELCOMED feeling mentally unbalanced without my heavy sweating sessions to fall on. . .

katybumpinthenight · 06/10/2007 07:12

jj2ndtime really sympathise with your spd i suffered too x the only excercise i could do was gentle rolling on an excercise ball.someone else might have some good ideas though

susiecutie so glad you have joined us!the advice you have given is great thanks xxx

pixiella [sad} at your mc.good luck with ttc.susiecutie has written some great advice a bit further down ie the water front. just think how much excercise you are getting while ttc and it all countsxxx

spottyshoes · 06/10/2007 09:07

SusieC - Soory to hear you're not too well and missing hubby. Hope you're feeling a bit better this morning.
Welcome Pixiella, sorry to hear about your mc - been there a few times myself (((hugs)))and good luck ttc & losing the stone!
jj2ndtime: I had really bad SPD. I dont think you can do many burning exercises as most cardio work involves your legs somehow! But I used to go swimming and either scissor kick before SPD became too bad or put one of those long pole floats under my thighs to support my bottom half, keep my legs still and then go like mad with my arms! You still get out of puff that way! And I know its not cardio but arm weights will also burn fat.
Goodluck today everyone. xx

laloupgarou · 06/10/2007 10:13

Morning

Was going to suggest swimming too, jj2ndtime, and Spotty's suggestion about the arm weights is also good. Must be frustrating for you though if you're a dedicated gymgoer. When I was really into my running a few months ago, I was running 5km about 3 times a week and swimming a few km as well. If I had to miss a day I could feel my muscles twitching to get out there!

Welcome to pixiella, all the best ttc and sorry to hear about your mc x

SusieC, how are you today? Your wee dd sounds lovely! Thanks for posting the info esp about the water (Paul McKenna refers to water as the Magical Weight-Loss Elixir in his book ). Will try to glug back as much as possible!

Hi to everyone else, we're doing great

katybumpinthenight · 06/10/2007 10:28

good luck for today everyone xx
i'm around so if you need help staying out of the cupboagive me a shout!!!!

go bumpers we are doing it xxx

laloupgarou · 06/10/2007 10:43

Thanks katyb, I might need you! Dd has some friends coming over for a party today, it's her birthday soon. Might need some help resisting the pizza and fairycakes...

JJ2ndtime, I am one of the regular posters on the Exercise Buddies thread. One of the posters is a qualified fitness instructor so have asked her advice about exercising with SPD, hopefully she'll have some suggestions.

katybumpinthenight · 06/10/2007 10:45

i'm here if you need me laloupgarou but judging by the way you've been going this week you can do it preety damn well anyway xx

have a great party

JJ2ndTime · 06/10/2007 12:06

Thank you so much guys just seeing the live support has eased my frustration somewhat . . . . . .

I was considering arm exercises but just gotta make sure I don't end up too muscly, although this could have a distinct advantage for all the carrying around I'm gonna have to do in a few months!

Will check Exercise chat thread as suggested and swimming yep,it could be just the treat but am gonna need a crane to get me in and out the blooming pool so gotta settle for floating in the bath though this may be tricky as I'll have to compress my boby length . . . hee hee heee

Cheers all!xx

pollywollydooooooooodle · 06/10/2007 12:30

afternoon all...has been like bedlam here for the past 2 hours with a 2 year old who hasn't yet got the concept of needing to share yet ("Mine! Wah!") and my nearly 4 year old who has forgotten what it was like and kept saying "isn't she being naughty!" Luckily am good friends with her mum...

anyway i knew the visit would involve homemade scones and jam so skipped the brekkie and munched on.

I'm now aiming for lunch of salmon and salad sarnies and fruit of some sort....haven't thought of eve meal yet....whats everyone else having?

hello new katybumpers!

keep on bumping old katybumpers...roll on monday!

katybumpinthenight · 06/10/2007 12:56

haven't thought what to have tonight yet.saturday night is always the killer for me.i try and make it feel like saturday iykwim and have takeaway and stuff.i may need shouting at later

enjoy the rest of your day pollywollydooooodle xx

JJ2ndTime · 06/10/2007 13:43

Hey there laloupgarou, katybumpinthenight and pollywolly! I just had a eureka moment and decided to give jumping on the spot a try as this could be done whilst keeping my legs together and yet does not seem to have any immediate impact (through vibrations) on causing added pain to pubic area!

Crikey, am I as obsessed about exercising as I sound! Shyte think I am! Anyways gotta get otta the depressing loop . . . . so anyone out there thinking . . . . not a good idea and it will hurt even more in a bit, jumping is not a good idea?

JJx

katybumpinthenight · 06/10/2007 14:15

going to hospital dd very sick hopefully be back soon xxx

JJ2ndTime · 06/10/2007 14:27

ooooh hope all goes ok at hospital .. ..

scienceteacher · 06/10/2007 14:30

Just wanted to offer my support to all in this thread.

I have lost a stone in the last six weeks. It wasn't hard at all - cutting out snacks, high fat foods, and cutting back on portion size. I'm already down two dress sizes

MrsSeanSlater · 06/10/2007 14:34

I had a very virtuous lunch today or parma ham slices with a leafy salad (rocket, watercress and spinach) with balsamic vinegar. But now I've got a craving for something sweet. Must resist, must resist...

MrsSeanSlater · 06/10/2007 14:35

You make it sound so easy scienceteacher
TBH I could probably do it by just cutting out the cakes/biscuits/sweets and reducing my wine consumption but I'm a bit impatient and want to lose the lot asap.

MrsSeanSlater · 06/10/2007 15:05

I've just realised that, from the side, I look four months pregnant. [sob]

scienceteacher · 06/10/2007 15:12

I'm surprised too, Mrs Slater, but that's what it has been like for me.

I do still drink a lot of wine, but it doesn't seem to be detrimental.

I can't believe that I can ignore a plate of biscuits or cake, but I can!

I signed up for Weightwatchers Online, and tracked my points for the first few weeks, and now I instinctively know what is OK or not.

tangarine · 06/10/2007 15:38

Katy - hope your dd is OK

The tandoori was yum, and I only had half of the naan with it. Very filling too, as loads of meat and salad.

Today - Breakfast Special K and low fat yoghurt
Lunch mashed banana and 2 pieces of toast and a bunch of grapes
Dinner will be prawn risotto and salad and a glass of wine.

I realised a couple of days ago that I had forgotten how it felt to be hungry - so was obv seriously overeating. Better put the on!

dinny · 06/10/2007 19:44

Katy, hope your dd is OK.

ScienceTeacher - well done. Can you gve us a typical day's food you eat to lose weight? And wine!

spottyshoes · 06/10/2007 20:12

Ohh yes I'd like to know too - that sounds like my kind of diet!
Hope everything's ok with dd KatyB?
Well done on eating out and STILL being saintly tangerine! Sounds Yum

Brekkie: Porridge with raisins & sliced banana. fresh OJ
11'ses No Sugar Banana bread (friend made it so need to dig out receipe PollyWD)
Lunch: Tuna L/F Mayo Salad Pitta with extra side salad.
PM T: Apple & Muller rice
Dinner: Cheesy Apple Pork Chop with small blob of Mashed Pot, Green Beans, Asparagus, Minicorn, carrots, broccoli
Pud: Meringue Nest with Mango and creme fraiche
Exercise: 2 mile power walk with pram

Sounds like I've eaten loads today but it hasnt felt like it! Slap on the wrist though as I havent had any water at all! (apart from decaf teas)

spottyshoes · 06/10/2007 20:14

Ooooooh I forgot - please can you tell me how to make your prawn risotto tangerine? I love it but can never make it myself!

scienceteacher · 06/10/2007 20:29

I start the day with bran flakes (I was never a cereal eater before this diet, but for some reason I am reasonably motivated to have half a bowl every morning).

For lunch, I have a school salad - usually this consists of ham, lettuce, then either pasta, rice or couscous. Then veggies and beans - tomato, cucumber, celery, kidney beans, beetroot etc. I give that 5 WW points. I can have as much as I like, and it keeps me going all day.

For supper, we will usually have something like chicken or fish. I will have only a small amount of rice or pasta with it, and will be light on any sauces. With having to consider the rest of the family at supper time, I tend to eat 'ordinary' meals, but just smaller portions.

So much of what I am doing now is outside of my normal rules of eating - cereal, salads, narrow range of food. But somehow, I am just motivated to lose weight, and it doesn't bother me that I eat a fairly boring salad every day for lunch, and always pass on biscuits and cake. Long may it continue!
