Happy New Year! Here we are! Not just a brand new year but a brand new decade. New decades always feel that bit more significant and life enhancing.

I, like many others, would love to embrace the Twenty Twenties feeling more svelte, toned, healthier & happier. A massive part of that is underpinned by what we eat, when we eat it and why? In turn, how we feel mentally underpins our eating habits. Eating feelings, celebratory meals out, food rewards etc. By being balanced and mindful around food will help us all stay on track.

I know that if I don’t keep on it by setting goals, logging, calorie counting, utilising time restricted eating, and eating a mostly Mediterranean style diet I would gain month on month. Diet and weight loss isn’t a one size fits all. There are so many enjoyable options. Personally If I eat a carb heavy diet I hold not only extra weight but also carry water. My whole silhouette blobs out. I also rarely drink alcohol and keep sugar to a minimum. I exercise by walking & swimming.

I’m petite in statue, have an under active thyroid (medicated) and every bit of extra weight shows. Previously I allowed myself to get obese but since dropping 20+ lbs I’m no longer in that category. I’m still working on getting my BMI into the ‘normal’ category and this is one of my goals for 2020.

The previous threads have proved wonderfully supportive and inspiring The ladies on these threads have been awesome and shared some great achievements!

Anyone like to join me in 2020?

Add your name, personal goals, eating/exercise plan etc.

Together we can do it!

@BustedDreams I'm calorie counting, 1400 a day then dropping to 1200 after 6 months as I think I'll need a little boost then to get the final lbs off. I'm very excited to start. Just writing up my shopping list today.

BustedDreams · 30/12/2019 11:29

Good idea @JBCG if budget stretches to it.

Talking of portion control I thought these visual aids might help some peeps. The pic with the burger struck a cord with me. Not that I have burgers but in realising when eating out portions served are usually larger than the recommended size.

Thanks @BustedDreams! I look forward to being a member of this thread! My subject is Psychology. I am good at applying it to ithers but not so much myself Xmas Blush
I have a tendency to make too many changes all at once and then lose heart when I fall off the wagon. This year I’m goingto try for slow but steady!

coffeeiseverything · 30/12/2019 13:26

Can I join too, I still haven't lost my baby weight and he is now 14 months! 2 stone to lose ASAP.

Winecheesesleep · 30/12/2019 13:53

I'm in. I have just over 2 stone to lose in total, 1 stone to get to a healthy BMI. So not massive but I have tried almost every diet going and despite initial success I never stick with them. Does anyone have any advice on what works when it's your willpower getting in the way? I know what I need to do (eat less, move more), I just sabotage myself.

I'm thinking of trying intermittent fasting but worried that's just another diet to add to my list. Sorry not very upbeat but trying to be realistic this time!

annabell22 · 30/12/2019 16:25

Has anyone started yet or are you waiting for 1st Jan? About three weeks ago I set myself a goal for 1st Jan and I got within 100g of it, then bounced back up and can't seem to get down there again. I'm still sore from a long, rocky and vertical hike on Saturday so haven't been to the gym since, but bought some new gym gear and a swimsuit today. Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to walk properly - going downstairs is agonising!

@Winecheesesleep it's 80% diet, 20% exercise. Zoe Harcombe's The Diet Fix is an interesting read, also Jason Fung's The Obesity Code if you are interested in intermittent fasting.

Lionso · 30/12/2019 17:49

I'm starting the diet today. I will be doing the 8 week Blood Sugar Diet. I haven't really tried low-carb before so will see how it goes.

I have a long haul flight to do in March and I'm at the point where that seatbelt has got not much room left in it, and the seat sides dig in to me. So losing a stone (hopefully) by then would help loads.

BustedDreams · 30/12/2019 19:07

@Peasplease21 Us social scientists are good at that aren’t we ;) The ‘knowing’ the theory doesn’t mean we can always apply it. Its easier said than done. One thing that does help apply the theory is group support ... hence this group Grin

Love the username @coffeeiseverything and I agree it is! Love my joe I do. Hop on board. What’s your plan?

@Winecheesesleep if you get overwhelmed or despondent with ‘dieting’, go for the change for life approach. That’s me really. The eating regime I have is enjoyable, sustainable and feasible over the long term. I might lose slow but it’s coming off. Nonetheless (as I quite enjoy the weighing measuring tracking etc) I still implement IF, calorie counting, use apps and base foods mainly on low carb Mediterranean.

@annabell22 this thread is a continuation of This thread so some posters are already on healthy eating regimes. Do what ever suits you, especially if you’ve parties coming up.

@Lionso I had great success on the Blood Sugar Diet (had been told I was pre diabetic) I still eat similar now but my daily calories are around 1,000.

Thanks @BustedDreams I haven’t chosen a dress yet- don’t want to go shopping until I’m much closer to my goal weight as I don’t want to be one of those people that buys the dress in advance and never fits into it!

RunningNinja79 · 30/12/2019 19:20

I started today. Got myself Green Tea on the way to work. It left a funny taste and texture, but 1 polo sorted that. It works out at 8 calories a time (2 for the green tea and 6 for the polo). Not technically fasting properly, but very low calories. I think that route will be best for me. 16:8 so only eating between 11AM and 7PM. Or at least only have very little.

Really should weigh myself. Was going to save that for 1st, but I may as well just do it tomorrow. Then I dont want to until 1st Feb.

BustedDreams · 30/12/2019 19:31

@riotlady good idea! It’s so exciting though! I love a wedding 👰🏼 (not hinting!)

@RunningNinja79 Green tea is supposed promote weight loss, although it makes me feel nauseous. Tried it several times, just can’t stomach it. Heaven knows why.

OP posts:
NorthernPowermouse · 30/12/2019 20:21

Someone once suggested green tea and peppermint tea in together...never tried it but might give it a go.

I’ve had a dreadful day...McDonald’s then a curry...good job I’m not starting til Jan! Going to try to put together a bit of a meal plan tomorrow so I’m prepared. It will not include McDonald’s.

SunshineCake · 30/12/2019 20:51

@2020newme. We are nearly twins I'm same height, nearly 48 and 12 stone 7.2.

2020newme · 30/12/2019 21:15

@SunshineCake that is cool - we can spur each other on!!

So you have asthma? Does that affect your ability to exercise? I have hypermobility which makes exercise hard for me aside from walking. I can't do things like pilates or yoga as my connective tissues will just stretch and cause huge pain. Can't do anything weight bearing either.

So, I just have to lose weight through diet and walking which is tough - guess it may be a similar story for you?

I have never done the 5:2 but I did find 16:8 really easy to stick to last year. Until my birthday in the autumn when I fell off the wagon and then convinced myself it wasn't worth getting back on with Christmas coming Xmas Grin Xmas Grin Xmas Grin

In fact, before I went all wrong, I was thinking about going down to OMAD in the evening as once I became accustomed to being hungry, I sometimes didn't eat until about 3pm...

Anyway, I stuck to 16:8 today but went over calories as had a preplanned Christmas lunch out with some friends. Am out tomorrow night but will drive so I cannot drink and won't eat after 9pm if I have lunch at 1pm.

Good luck everyone!!

cheninblanc · 30/12/2019 22:19

Am I OK to join in?

I am 40, weigh 82kg and am 5,4.
I'm starting couch to 5k and 16:8. I did 16:8 following major surgery so I know it works and I can stick to as despite not moving much for weeks I didn't gain a pound

milliefiori · 30/12/2019 22:25

I'm in. I need to lose 16lb to be back within healthy BMI but 25lb to be back at the wieght I feel happy in.

For Jan I am having no sugar, refined carbs or alcohol.

I want to eat mainly lots of varied veg and lean protein and drink green tea.

SunshineCake · 30/12/2019 23:22

@2020newme I do have asthma but it doesn't stop be doing too much. If I have trouble I just stop running or slow down when walking up a hill with the dog.

I've never lost weight through exercise even when I have watched what I ate and did the shred for a month I lost nothing. For me it is eat less but I struggle as calorie counting does my head in after a while.

I'm not doing anything at the moment. I've completely lost the plot. We have tonnes of treats in still but I'm not shopping until next week and then it will be a plan.

If someone told me what to eat at each meal to give me all I need plus lose weight I would follow it but I struggle with best things to eat and when when I am intolerant to basics.

MercuryRising · 31/12/2019 00:57

Can I join you all? I am about to start training for a half marathon in March and desparately need to shift some of my baby weight (baby is a year old 😳) by then. Im planning on doing WW from home and will start Wednesday. I'm going to do a food shop in preparation tomorrow.

Gilbert82 · 31/12/2019 08:25

Can I join?
I think I’m going to do 16:8 (11am-7pm) and try to stick to around 1500 calories. I’ve also bought a couple of exercise dvds so will be aiming to exercise at least 3 times a week.
Going to charge my Fitbit today ready to start tomorrow

dottydolly72 · 31/12/2019 09:00

Well.. I'm off to an unscheduled start with terrible tummy troubles this morning 😬 not how I'd planned to start the IF but hey ho day one it is!

annabell22 · 31/12/2019 10:59

@dottydolly72 ouch, hope you soon feel better

@BustedDreams parties?! Hell, no. Will watch fireworks in my pjs then go to bed.

@MercuryRising hope your training goes well. I have done a few HMs and feel your pain!

Hike soreness is almost gone, so might even be able to go for a run tomorrow without wanting to wail and give up after 10 metres. I am now 400g away from the target I set on 5 Dec and with only a few hours left I don't fancy my chances of seeing that number on the scales tomorrow. However, no big deal, will still remain focused on heading in the right direction.

I have bought a diary with lots of space for notes and listed out my aims, long term and short term goals, my habits that stop me from succeeding and how I will change them. I am also logging all food on MFP and I wear my Fitbit 24/7 unless it is charging.

Met some friends in Costa this morning and had herbal tea instead of my usual soy hot chocolate so feeling virtuous. I have paneer tonight that needs eating up, then Veganuary starts tomorrow.

dottydolly72 · 31/12/2019 11:05

I stupidly got on the scales this morning.. was 9.4 now 10stone!! I really did indulge most of December so I need to sort this out quick sharp!! I can feel the extra weight.. it's not nice at all and the shock of those scales this morning should kick my butt somewhat. Anybody else step on the scales daily? Terrible habit I have .. can really set the tone for the day if you've gained 🙈 anyway what's done is done, let's hope for a loss this time next week.

BustedDreams · 31/12/2019 11:31

Good All

Welcome @cheninblanc, jump right in. I agree stick with what you know works for you.

@milliefiori sounds like a plan!

@MercuryRising I find a specific goal can be very motivating! Let us know how your training goes!

@Gilbert82 the more the merrier! There’s a great bunch of ladies who use these boards.

@dottydolly72 hope you’re ok and not in too much discomfort!

@annabell22 Veganuary sounds very healthy. I’m not sure if I could go a full month without fish, chicken etc but you have inspired me to do more meat free days!

@dottydolly72 at least you’ve braved them! Now the only way is down ... I don’t think you’ve put on established weight. Most probably waste & water weight. If you’re like me I gain like crazy if I my ratio protein/carbs changes. I need lower carb to lose. Good luck and hope it comes off sooner rather than later.

Roll Call - where are all my crew Grin
@Mungomango, @HettyPain, @DownUdderer, @isitxmasyet, @uptheshard, @jollyholibobs, @ConfusedAndStressed95, @Galvantula, @K1ngmarbs, @RubySlippers77, @Octopus37, @MrsJonesAndMe, @ilovetrees30, @Ethiopianflower, @mikehaligansstripyshirt, @Foreverlexicon

It’s here. The last day of the year/decade. I really hope the next decade brings health and happiness for you all.

I’m usually really optimistic and joyful at the thought of a brand new year/decade but I just can’t shake the sadness and helplessness I feel for the people and animals caught up in the Australian fires. Heartbreaking 😢

Hey can I join pls.. I've had an awful 2019 and want to lock start the new year by shifting some weight.. I'm signing up for the 121 Cambridge diet, starting tomorrow.

ilovetrees30 · 31/12/2019 12:05

I have decided to resurrect my MFP and actually log things properly from tomorrow. If the location of my local park run wasn't a med bath I would have gone tomorrow to start the new year with a run but I am not the most confident runner plus my knees have a history (haha) so don't want to risk slipping. Might try the body coach live workout instead tomorrow morning. I have also decided I am going to get my 10k steps a day.
