Ketogenic diet

Anyone following keto diet? I’m starting it on Boxing Day. I’ve done it a few times and always feel great on it but never last longer than a month due to getting bored. Hoping I can change that if I find others doing it too!

I’m going to try it in January. I’ve done low carb before but never keto, I think I might find the amount of fat a bit strange to start off with.

HerLadySheep · 24/12/2019 07:30

I did it and lost 2 stone.....then stopped and put it back on 😕
I always feel so much better with lots more energy and less joint pain (I have chronic arthritis) so in the New Year I will be cracking open the avocados and butter again.

Feelinggoodashell · 24/12/2019 08:19

Maybe this is a support thread now then?

@HerLadySheep I am the same. I always feel so so good on keto.

@Todayisanewday75 if you have a lot of weight to lose you don’t necessarily have to add much extra fat to your diet as you want your body to burn your own fat. So I never add fat unnecessarily but just eat Naturally full fat versions of things. Hope that makes sense.

I had been on Keto for months but the temptation of yummy Christmas food and baileys broke me a couple of weeks ago.
I’ll be back on it January 2nd.
I feel so much better whilst on Keto, plus I’m very quickly gaining weight having stopped!

BuffaloCauliflower · 24/12/2019 08:25

I did it in the form of the Blood Sugar Diet/Fast 800 and lost a stone earlier this year, going for the next stone in the new year. There’s healthy and unhealthy ways to do keto, if you’re going for a Med style option with lots of fish, veg, legumes as well as fat, great. If you’re just going to eat loads of steak and cheddar, less great.

Isbutteracarb · 26/12/2019 14:49

Is Keto suitable for BF mums?

Shinyletsbebadguys · 26/12/2019 16:02

I've lost just under 7 stone on Keto (started May 26th ) and it's been a life saver for me (literally my blood pressure was pretty much going to kill me eventually)

The only thing I would say is the first few weeks can be tough as hell , the switch to using fat as fuel is a big one as we have all been using sugar for so flipping long, oh and be prepared for swearing in the supermarket when every goddamn thing has sugar in it !!. But it's very worth it if you can see it through. The downsides like breath and keto flu I promise go after a couple of weeks , they are temporary. I stuck to keto yesterday without breaking a sweat because the food is delicious when you get through it.

Oh and the cravings...go away, it's not about not being allowed to eat something , it's not wanting to. I genuinely dont like the taste of sugar and non natural carbs.

Just wanted to put a punt in from someone it really worked for. It's not for everyone but for me ? It's been amazing .

Shinyletsbebadguys · 26/12/2019 16:03

When you get *used to it !

Pangur2 · 26/12/2019 16:04

I lost 3 stone on lazy keto. I've not done it for Christmas (omg I am so bloated and farty, haha ) but back on it as soon as the bread and Lindt balls run out. I'm lucky in that I don't really get keto flu so can indulge every once and a while without going through hell getting back on it.

Toooldtobearsed2 · 26/12/2019 16:05

So is this a support thread?
I want to give it a go. Have done low carb, half heartedly, but need strictness to succeed 😟

Todayisanewday75 · 26/12/2019 16:07

A support thread would be great.

Do you all track your macros? I’m a bit wary of tracking because I got quite obsessive about tracking calories when I was younger, wasn’t a healthy way to live.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 26/12/2019 16:11

I track my macros for now but will be switching to lazy keto when I hit my final goal (hit my initial one then realised that it was working so well I could likely see a weight I haven't seen since I was 17 ...I was right lol) , i personally think that in early days macro tracking really helps as stalls can kill motivational but not if you have any history of eating disorder.

I'm on a Facebook site and loads of people dint track and still lose weight in a good amount

Todayisanewday75 · 26/12/2019 16:26

Your weight loss is amazing shiny.
I don’t have a great deal to lose, just the extra bit of baby weight that I’ve had for the last seven years. I’d like to feel better and sleep better too. And be free of cravings, particularly wine cravings!

Todayisanewday75 · 26/12/2019 16:29

I do generally try to stay away from sugar but the lindt balls got me too yesterday pangur

Todayisanewday75 · 26/12/2019 16:30

tooold I have in the past gained weight on a half hearted low carb diet, guess it’s the worst of both worlds!

Feelinggoodashell · 26/12/2019 17:28

@Shinyletsbebadguys thank you so much for posting - well done on your loss and amazingly fast!!
Please can I ask what you tend to eat? Avv nmc d what macros you aim for?
I am starting tomorrow with bacon eggs and mushroom for breakfast, home made soup for lunch (meat and veg) and not sure about dinner yet as I’m food shopping in the evening!

Shinyletsbebadguys · 26/12/2019 17:50

Sorry I'm never sure how to quote a name on my phone.

My macros are 136g fat 55g protein and 20g carbs although to be honest I very rarely hit more than 5g carbs.

At the beginning like a lot of people I probably ate healthily with loads of bacon etc but now to be honest I rarely eat like that. I do eat a lot of butter but my cholesterol is fine , I am currently moving to healthier fats.

I eat a lot of chicken and fish , spinach , avocado.
Oh and eggs and cheese i eat a lot of those.

A couple of recipes i find invaluable , search Google for headbangers kitchen mayonnaise, that makes a lovely coleslaw. Oh and avocado fries fried in butter , ghee or olive oil with salt on them I swear taste like chip shop chips !! Sounds insane but they really do.

I will admit I'm strict Leto because for me that works but that's because I had health conditions like PCOS and the beginnings of arthritis that are impacted by inflammatory foods. (I was also pre diabetic...all health issues gone ). I dont think everyone needs to be so strict.

And thank you hasn't always been easy but so worth it

Feelinggoodashell · 26/12/2019 18:04

Thank you! I can tend to get obsessed so I’m not sure if I will track macros or not. I’ve done keto before and I always stop as I get bored of what I’m eating so this time I’ve bought some cook books and I’ve dusted off my slow cooker. Will try and make the most of the winter with soups and casseroles and use things like courgetti to have Bolognese still.

I need to be strict too as I’m 35 and I want to have a baby and will need fertility treatment so I want to get my bmi Down ASAP so I can start it. My doctor said keto is the best for fertility.

I am also going to start exercise - I have dance aerobics booked In for Saturday morning!

Well done @Shinyletsbebadguys I’m still in awe of your achievements. You must feel fantastic!

I can totally understand that and I know quite a few people who dont track macros and ot still very much works for them. That's why I like keto, there are several different ways that work for people.

My big thing I think was that food was such a huge feature of my life before I was almost governed by it , and whilst I still enjoy food now it's not in control of me, I do find plan but once I've done it I forget about it. Before I was constantly thinking about and looking for the next snack and now it's very much eat to love not the other way around . Still enjoy delicious meals but it's not the biggest part of the day.

Enjoy it :-) plus it's so much fun when you eat cream and people raise their eyebrows Grin

Balloondog · 26/12/2019 19:01

Can I join please? I've put on so much weight in the last five years and have tried numerous ways to shift it and basically feel like I've been on a diet for 5 years but my weight's just going up not down. I just had my 40+ check up and my blood pressure is high after a lifetime of low BP and I'm
Pre-diabetic. I have to do SOMETHING!

One of the things that has always put me off the is that I don't eat much meat but I've found some interesting vegetarian Keto recipes on Pinterest so I think I might be ok.

Any tips for an absolute beginner (who also has to cook for a rice, bread and sugar loving DH)?

Feelinggoodashell · 26/12/2019 20:00

Welcome @Balloondog

When I’ve started before I think it helps to have lots of keto things you can snack on like boiled eggs, cheese, some nuts although they have carbs so you have to be careful. Some good quality geek yoghurt will have higher fat than carb so is good in small quantities.

I’ve just done an online food order for Saturday. But tomorrow I am having -

Bacon eggs and mushrooms
Chicken and vegetable soup (home made)
And prob beef stir fry.

I’ve ordered lots of fish for next week- kippers, tuna, salmon. Lots of eggs, cheese.

In waitrose they sell frozen burgers and meatballs which are 99.9% meat so I buy them - the meatballs are good to precook and keep in fridge for times when I’m hungry.

Once I’m in ketosis I usually then start to also do Intermittent fasting.

Good luck everyone - my scales have a flat battery so I can’t weigh myself tomorrow morning annoyingly but I am trying to not obsess too much over weight and just do it to feel good and be healthier.

I follow dr berg on you tube who has some good videos explaining how to start

Thanks @Feelinggoodashell, your meal plan and snack tips are really helpful; boiled eggs and Greek yoghurt here I come!

Todayisanewday75 · 28/12/2019 08:02

How was your first day feelinggood?
I’m not starting properly until new years day but am going to try and cut out sugar and white carbs over the next few days so it’s not too much of a shock to the system.

Feelinggoodashell · 28/12/2019 08:34

It was good thanks. I wasn’t hungry or have any cravings.
I did have a massive headache which could be side effects but I f woken up with a sore throat today so possibly just a cold. It’s hard to tell. I thought it was too early for keto flu though.

I have a big food shop arriving today which I’m looking forward to as then I will have a variety of food in which I can chose from each day.

Trying to reduce sugar before you start keto will be a massive help and reduce side effects
