Ketogenic diet

Anyone following keto diet? I’m starting it on Boxing Day. I’ve done it a few times and always feel great on it but never last longer than a month due to getting bored. Hoping I can change that if I find others doing it too!

Thanks for info Feelinggood

katieak · 04/01/2020 21:33

@feelinggoodashell started back on 2nd so a couple of days in now. It's been ok to be honest. Struggling more with dry January! 😂

katieak · 05/01/2020 11:30

One thing I am struggling with is that I feel I am eating a lot of calories with all the fat! Appreciate there are no (few) carb calories but does it not make your overall intake quite high? Not sure how to get around that...

thebluearsefly · 05/01/2020 11:34

I’ve been on this for 14 months now - lost two stone (that was my goal) in 3 months and have maintained my goal weight ever since - I find it very easy and have learned some good tips along the way - hit me up if you have questions?

TheFrendo · 05/01/2020 12:22

@katieak,

You will find that as reduce your carbs down to some minimal level, you will eat less overall because your hunger decreases (e.g. I do not eat breakfast as I am not hungry until much later in the day)

adviceplease32 · 05/01/2020 17:06

How is everyone getting on today?

I'm so surprised that I'm not really hungry! It's lovely 😊

What is the best time of day to test urine ? And does it make a difference if you're dehydrated?
(Had a few gins last night, but this morning the urine strip said moderate ketones, but I don't quite believe it really as last night wasn't a 100% good night! I did try to keep my carbs and protein down).

No more alcohol for me!

Feelinggoodashell · 05/01/2020 17:43

@katieak it’s such a weird concept but I have read lots that says not to count calories on keto as your body burns fuel in a totally different way so it’s different. And that you should eat when you add hungry. It’s such a different way of eating.

@thebluearsefly thank you for posting! It’s amazing to read it’s worked so well for you.

@adviceplease32 I think testing wee is best first in morning but I also know that once you’ve been in ketosis a while they are not accurate. I am going for drinks on Friday too so a bit worried but I will just have gin and slim tonic and only have a couple. Hopefully that will be ok!! Welll done for still being in ketosis.

I’ve had a good day. I’ve had a brunch at 11:30 and not been hungry since. I’ve got a lamb and coconut curry in my slow cooker for lunch tomorrow and Tuesday. And I’ve got a crustless salmon quiche in the oven for dinner (it’s huge so will probably do me for dinner for a few nights!

I had a long term motivation of wanting to start ivf treatment with a mid term motivation of it being a friends 40th birthday in autumn . But yesterday I booked a two week holiday to kefalonia in June! I’m so excited and it’s a new motivation. So tomorrow evening I have my gym induction. I’m going to try and focus on muscle building and strength and go in the mornings (ie during a fast). Does this sound like it will be a good idea?

Hi - Can I join? I low carbed a few years ago and lost 3 stone. We hit a difficult patch as a family which de-railed me, I put the weight back on and I've struggled to get to grips with it again.

I'm experiencing some menopause symptoms at the moment though and it's spurred me on to go keto again as I'm sure it'll help.

katieak · 05/01/2020 18:17

@feelinggoodashell a holiday is great motivation! Kefalonia looks beautiful - would love to go!

Just pinched your soup recipe for tomorrow's lunch 😊

Dontsayfuckorbugger · 05/01/2020 18:17

Started Easter 2019 have lost 3 stone, am not religiously following it every day, feel bloody fab

HelloAgainYou · 05/01/2020 18:27

I started lazy Keto in September and have lost 22lb. I want to lose a total of 70lbs so have a long way to go!

Elmo311 · 05/01/2020 22:01

Hi everyone :)
I'm so excited by this thread and reading the successes that people have had is really going to spur me on!

I'm on day 4 and I think I'm dying! Headache, muscle ache, chills, dizziness. I'm also freezing even though the house is 23degrees!

This is all my fault, my years of 90% carb(lots of chocolate!) diet!

Can't wait to see some results, and hear about everyone's progress.

Feelinggoodashell · 05/01/2020 23:11

Omg off so great to have so many on here!!

@Dontsayfuckorbugger amazing weight loss!! So glad you feel Amazing, that’s what’s important.

@ProfYaffle welcome! I’m sorry you had some difficult times, weight gain is so easy when going through sometbig hard. And sometimes I think we need food to help us through. When are you planning to start keto?

@katieak I hope you like it!! My lamb and coconut curry and salmon quiche were both lovely!!

@HelloAgainYou 22 pounds is amazing! Well done. How are you finding it so far?

@Elmo311 welcome!! Well done on getting to day 4, you are almost over the hard bit!! Sea salt helps with the keto flu and bone broth if you have any. They both really make a big difference. Maybe tomorrow or Tuesday you will wake up feeling amazing though!

The soup was great! And even hubby approved. I think the bacon and cream might have helped 😊 Got a book which I am reading to try and help understand it all a bit more. Think the info I've read so far has maybe been a bit basic which is why it hasn't totally made sense to me yet.

What is a realistic weight loss to expect per week/month? I'm about a stone and a half overweight so not got loads to lose but definitely need to shift some! Some of your weight losses sound amazing!

HeyPizza · 06/01/2020 13:49

@thebluearsefly Can I please ask how you have managed to maintain so long? I have such a sweet tooth, and have tried keto several times but fail miserably every time. At what point do the cravings for sugar stop (if at all), and how are you maintaining your weight - are you strictly keto all the time, or do you have 'cheat' days?

HeyPizza · 06/01/2020 13:52

Also, is there a difference between the ketogenic diet and low carb-high fat?

Should you avoid milk altogether, and switch to soya or another type of milk?

Thanks for the advice :)

QueenOfOversharing · 06/01/2020 14:59

I'm restarting keto (or lowest carb I can manage) today - think I'll be tracking food until I feel more confident, but tbh I hate tracking (eating disorder issues). But thought I'd jump in here & soak up all your enthusiasm! Hearing your achievements is so encouraging.

I have high blood sugar, in obese BMI range, zero energy, depression, arthritis and I'm hoping this will help some of these too.

I weighed myself last Weds, but haven't been doing well with food, so I'll wait til next week to weigh. I'm recording it in Kg as I'm terrified of knowing my weight & I am not converting it (if that makes any sense)!!

Hi @recklessgran waves

recklessgran · 06/01/2020 15:07

Hi @QueenOfOversharing so pleased that you've managed to pick yourself up - I'm finding this keto lark relatively easy so hope you do too. I have managed to resist ALL temptation so far. [Still surrounded by Christmas goodies!]. I'm not going to get too ahead of myself though as I've been all enthusiastic about weight loss before but it took me 5 months to lose just shy of a stone so I'm guessing I'm in a better headplace this time. Hoping to stay on the wagon and see this through once and for all.

QueenOfOversharing · 06/01/2020 15:10

I had some friends round yesterday who suggested just coffee - so I got crisps & biscuits. Guess who ate them all??? I had 2 biscuits for breakfast.

But I have logged them & will adjust for everything else. It'll take me a while to properly get 5%, but I'll be happy if I just hit less than 100% 😂

Also really hoping it'll help lift my mood & energy - that doesn't bloody help.

So glad you're finding it easy & doing so well!

QueenOfOversharing · 06/01/2020 15:11

That was @recklessgran !!

ProfYaffle · 06/01/2020 19:06

Thanks @Feelinggoodashell - I started today - anticipating feeling like hell by Wednesday Grin

Elmo311 · 06/01/2020 19:59

My lunch today. It was yum!
I'm feeling much better now , last night was terrible! I couldn't sleep, had a headache, hot then cold etc
Ketones are moderate (apparently)
But I weigh myself everyday...I know...I shouldn't...and I'd put on weight this morning even though I've been religious about it. Boo! Gotta try not to weigh everyday.

I’m so sorry everyone I have to leave this thread as my ex husbands new partner is massively invading my privacy and reading all my mumsnet posts. I’ve already changed my user name once. Safer now just to come off completely.

I wish you all so much luck!
