cardio vascular exercise- basically where you get the heartrate up into that "fatburning" zone (there are somewhere tables that tell you where your heartrate should ideally be to maximise fatburning).

Runnis, cycling, etc...are some kind of cardio....however, forinstance tae bo is also a good cardio exercise, Tae bo is based on martial arts and aerobics, and well it certainly elevates the heartrate

Lorns · 05/09/2007 22:39

3andnomore - Davina's workout is probably based on interval training so you recoering and then working your heart a bit more again. It could also be a mix betweeen cardio and strength - again interval training, but using different "outputs" aerobic lung capasity and muscle strength and edurance.

Fedda - sorry for not replying. Speedy has said it all. It's just getting the mix right. Why not start off with 10 minutes of rowing at a easy level and see how you feel. I would go for longer duration at the same level, before increasing the level/resistance. You may need to go on the higher level for say 5 minutes and then drop down for the rest of your time. Reduce lower and increase higher level until 20+ minutes at the higher level. As Speedy says it is very important to set your posture before you begin any type of exercise (especially rowing (shoulder alignment is crucial). You could do this x2/3a week to start with. Another heart raiser is to walk/jog or a combination arround the area you live in. As Speedy said DVD's are good also. Don't forget the strength element in your workout... Hope this helps!

Blousy - welcome. I teach Body Pump. Are you still feeling that you don't want to do any more at the end of each track. In other works are you plateauing? Same for spinning and running. Is it getting too easy.... what's your comfort zone.... Easing down on the drink and portion size for food is good also.

As are as weight is concerned - when you are doing resistance training (to a certain extent in spinning also as you are using your thigh muscles alot)you increase the size of your muscle fibres. Muscle weighs more than fat...

Speedy - where are you staying near Hastings?????

fedda · 05/09/2007 22:56

Thank you everyone who is replying. I'm crap at excersising and 20 minutes of lightest aerobics makes me so tired that I crash on my sofa. No one can make me do any more then. I went to the gym while staying in the hotel and i did manage to do 30 minutes with some rests and choosing the easiest machines. i had to have my shower straight after that. I'm more will powered with the dieting but every book i read makes me more confused then i was before i started. Some say no potatoes rice, pasta and similar products for dinner, some advice whole meal pasta and brown rice for dinner, some say any fruit is good, some that I need to watch fruit as it might ruin my teeth (or whatever is left of them). Some say eat as much as you like provided you stick to veg and fruit, some advice to watch the portion sizes. I can go on but i'm sure you get the picture. I don't even know if perl barley is okay for dinner or cous cous, it sounds really strange to me to not to every have rice or pasta with my meal or not to be able to make home made fish cakes for dinner since I use mash potatoes in the recipy.

Lorns

Just spoke to DH on telephone and he said it is near Battle. We are going end of month.

Are you near Hastings?

Hi all, had lost a pound this am! Must not get into the habit of weighing myself everyday!
Thanks for advice Lorns. I've been doing pump once a week for 4 years and it still nearly kills me! We have a fab instructor and she really motivates me to reach overload. I do try and put my weights up and I squat with 20kg, which probably doesn't sound much to you, but just getting it on and off is a huge effort! I suppose I am a bit more muscley so some weight gain could be down to that, but in reality, I'm sporting a blubbery tum and love handles too!
I do try and challenge myself when I run, I do one longish (8-10km) per week and two of about 5km, but I know I could work on my speed.
I've noticed that the women at the gym who are in seriously good shape spend a hour on the cross trainer each time. I'm currently forcing myself to do 15-20 mins, but I can't imagine staying on there for an hour!
Did I read that you also teach Body Attack? I'd like to try it, but it just looks so 'leapy'!

speedymama · 06/09/2007 14:39

Hi Blousy

Well done on losing a pound but try to only weigh yourself once a week because of fluctuations due to fluid retention etc.

I cannot imagine staying on the cross-trainer for 20 minutes let alone 1hour. I find it really boring. I manage 10 minutes and that is a struggle. I prefer running!

Lorns · 06/09/2007 14:41

Hi blousy - I've trained in Body Attack but then got pregnant and when I returned I couldn't get a class in the 1 centre that did it in my area.. aaargh! It is very leapy although you can do low impact (but fast low impact)! It isn't any good if you have pelvic floor problems....

If you were able to do at least 2 body pumps a week then you wouldn't find it so hard. (20kgs is very good though )!! Although you will still get some results your body is just "remembering" what it should do if it isn't challenged in the same week in the same sort of way.

Fedda - rowing is HARD! starting off with 5 minutes and working from that is a good start. Why not investigate the DVD area.....????

Speedy - I live in Hastings and Battle is the next town on. Would be happy to meet you all.....

blousy · 06/09/2007 16:26

Thanks guys! I could easily fit in another Body Pump class Lorns, I should give it a go. I do one on Wed and I've just about stopped aching by Saturday! So I guess Sunday would be best. I go to a Cannons gym and they do a pump class every day.
Speedy - I'm with you re cross trainer, so blimmin boring. I think those ten second marker things make it seem interminable.

Lorns · 06/09/2007 19:07

Blousy I used to teach at a cannons - they're great clubs! Wished I had one in my area now

OrmIrian · 06/09/2007 20:39

I used to love bodypump . It would fit it really well with running 3 times a week....

Leg much better. Managed to run a few hundred yards down the street when I thought I was late for picking DS#2 up from school without pain! So I'm using that as green light to go running again. Probably regret it...but hell you're only middle-aged once

fedda · 06/09/2007 21:38

Someone said to me then aerobics is very bad for everyone. it's bad for bones and not at all good for health. I can't believe it. Is this true? The same sourse insists that after 5 pm there shoudn't be any potatoes, rice, beans and likewice and that's a real way to loose weight. could anyone tell me if it's just another crase or is this the case? Thank you.

Lorns · 06/09/2007 23:04

Fedda - too much high impact aerobics can be bad for your joints, but in that case so can running. A good aerobic class should offer low and high impact options for participants, or have a mixture of low and high impact moves within the choreography used.

Impact/exercise is good for the bones as it causes osetoblast activity (cell responsible for bone formation).

The after 5 carb thing is an ongoing debate. I always come back to portion sizes and amounts per food group (balanced healthy diet). Will re-post this from the old thread hopefully tomorrow....

I eat pasta etc after 5.00 and am a size 6!

OrmIrian - glad to hear your leg feels a bit better. This is what I've come up with...
www.csp.org.uk - click onto !What is physiotheraphy" and then "chartered" and then enter somerset and sports medicine.

www.sportsmassageassociation.org for sports massuses. Click on natonal register and then TA for posetcode!

As all of the above are approved by the associations, you shouldn't have any problems. Just check they are registered with your health care provider. You might have to get a referral from your doctor. Good luck!!

fedda · 06/09/2007 23:17

Lorns, I've borrowed videos of aerobics by rosemery Conley who I regard as my favourite after I tried many others. I follow their hip and thigh workout and falt stomach plan which I can only do eor 20 minutes and then I do 20 next minutes in a day time. Would that be damaging? I really don't want to do any damage desparately trying to loose some weight and some inches on my weist and my fat stomach.

3andnomore · 06/09/2007 23:32

honmestly try to get your fitnes levels up....yes, start where you are comfortable but push yourself a bit more every few days....and soo you will be able to do more...even if it, initialy doesn't feel like that!

3andnomore · 06/09/2007 23:34

I have only 1 Rosemary C. which is seriously dated....and well, it was far to sedate, and I did that when I was unfit...maybe Beverly from Coronationstreet would yank your chain, less cardio, but lots of toning, and even a real beginner should be able to do it...once you get fitter, the aerobics section is seriously unde schieving though..but a great starter...

fedda · 06/09/2007 23:39

Far too sedate. I wish it was true for me. I get seriously exsosted! I don't have an option to join the class for various reasons. What excersise, apart from walking can I do to really get rid of my tummy-balloon? It's better in the mornings but not always and it's awful in the evenings. Now I had to have my tea with honey and lemon as I started yet another cold and my throat is painful. I didn't plan on any honey for a while but I hate medicine so I had to do the best of the worst.

laloop · 07/09/2007 08:53

Hi everyone

Sorry I haven't been about much the last few days. Have just skimmed through the thread. Hi to blousy and fedda.

Haven't been able to do any exercise this week as I was involved in minor car accident this week. Someone drove into the back of our car while we were at some traffic lights and I've ended up with a sore neck and have been prescribed strong anti-inflammatories by the GP. Does anyone know any safe exercises I could do to help "stretch" it out a bit to get rid of some of the stiffness? GP reckons I will be able to get back into running/gym once pain subsides as long as I take my time to warm up properly especially neck and shoulder area. Any advice much appreciated.

Lorns · 07/09/2007 14:56

Sorry to hear that laloop. . Glad it wasn't more serious. Are all the other members of your family ok?

Your neck with have some scar tissue and so when the pain subsides I would see a sports massuse. You may benefit from gently on your exhale tucking your chin slightly towards your chest a few times and then rotate left and then right from a central postion a few times. Always exhale as you rotate!

Normal upper back and chest stretches (arms forwards/arms behind) may help. Ensure the shoulders are slightly rolled back and slightly down so the shoulders blades are in a soft "V" before your stretch. Hope this helps

3andnomore · 07/09/2007 16:07

Fedda, how about cycling?
Also, "diet" wise it can really help to cut down on wheat where possible...as things like Bread and Pasta cause bloating in loads of people.

3andnomore · 07/09/2007 16:10

oh laloop....sorry you were involved in an accident...you poor thing. Hope that teh pain goes soon away!

Done NO exercise today, nor did I do any yesterday...oh the shame....still not back in my proper routine, as ms is still off school...
I bought that Paul MacKenna Book today, as it just sounded very interesting...and it sort of ties quite well in with Jason Vale...it's sort of Jason Vale without the Health "Freak" part of it, if that makes sense...

fedda · 07/09/2007 17:36

3andnomore, Please, don't laugh, I don't cycle.
i did cut out bread and pasta for a while now but it didn't make much difference, I;m really fed up with my flabby tummy. It's so ugly!
laloop, sorry for your trouble. I'm having back and naeck pains often and if you can bear it, try to give yourself self massage, if you are lucky your DH might do it for you, it's fat chance in my case though.

3andnomore · 07/09/2007 18:33

how about swimming then?

Anyway, even if you feel right now that even a little cardio vascular exercise feels exhausting....honest, fitness level can be build up really quickly if you persist. Just push yourself a little harder each time when you start to feel that the exercise is seeming a bit easier then it did before....

fedda · 07/09/2007 19:19

Thank you, 3andnomore. Swommong is trocky at the moment, I'll try excersising though.

3andnomore · 07/09/2007 19:31

long brisk walks, that get you breathless will, if you are on the unfit side , really help I think...because well, the fitter you are the harder you have to work to get the heartrate up into fatburning zone...and honest....you will soon see a difference in your fitness levels if you persist!

Oh, Beverly Callards DVD's are, imo really great for a beginners....cardio is enough to get you puffed when you are not used to it, and her toning section is pretty good, imo.

Oh, and Jade's Shape challenge is actually not bad, really....and very easy to follow

Lorns · 07/09/2007 19:38

Fedda - ditto 3andnomore re walking
