3andnomore · 03/09/2007 09:45

Speedy, glad that Achilles is getting better

speedymama · 03/09/2007 09:46

Sammac, well done! It feels wonderful when you can see as well as feel the fruits of your hard work.

Lorns, we are just going away for a few days in a cottage near Hastings. Nothing glamorous but DH has just finished his MBA and it will be our 6th wedding anniversary so we thought we would celebrate with a little getaway with the twins.

3anm, I know the feeling when you have a late night....

I'm watching my diet too because I have been rather slack lately and I can feel on my waist.

3andnomore · 03/09/2007 09:52

oh not a late night...went to bed at like 9pm...but was woken up in the night by one of my little darlings and then it took me like 3 hours to get back to sleep, sigh....

3andnomore · 03/09/2007 09:54

speedy, join us on the 10/10 thread...not so much of a diet thread, but one where we aim to get 10 portions of fruit and vegetables in each day

laloop · 03/09/2007 12:02

Hi everyone
School's restarted so I'm back into the gym routine as from this week, yayyy!!! Going tonight and then will book in a couple of morning creche sessions and hit the treadmill then the pool.

3andnomore · 03/09/2007 13:14

sounds great laloop!

reminds me, that I wanted to find out about the Body combat classes in the gym nearby

Am glad the Holidays are over now....they went quick enough, but I prefer school routine, lol!

speedymama · 03/09/2007 13:38

3anm

10/10 thread sounds interesting. For lunch, I had cous-cous mixed with tomato, cucumber and ham followed by an apple, a banana, a plum, a small bunch of grapes and two tangerines!

I think I qualify!

speedy anyone who want to ncrease their f&v intake qualifys...no one will be made fun off if they don't achieve those amounts...it's that we aim higher....anyway, that f&v 5 portion a day thing...well, that was just a random number the governement picked, not because we only need that little, but because they realised anything more would freak most people out, if they hardly managed 1 portion, lol...

fedda · 03/09/2007 22:35

Hi, Lorns, i'm looking for home workout or any excersises I could do at home without having to get any machines. I have rowing machine though.

fedda · 05/09/2007 09:25

Anyone? Please.

speedymama · 05/09/2007 12:41

Hi Fedda

Everyone must be busy! Welcome and we all know how you feel about slack tummies. Lorns posted a great exercise to flatten the tummy on the other thread so I have copied it for you.

As a way of life it is crucial to learn to pull your belly button 30% towards your spine , set your shoulders correctly

When doing back/ab exercising it is good to learn to contract the pelvic floor as well. If you just do plank, ab curls etc. without engaging the deep abdominals then you just strengthen your abs outwards - hence the pot belly appearance!

The 30% belly button thingy!!! Transversus Abdominis Activiation (TVA)

Standing or lying - imagine you have a wide belt around your middle. Tighten to the 10th notch by pulling the belly button tight towards the spine. It should feel uncomfortable and hard to breathe. This is engagement at 100%. Let this go. Pull in again 100% and let out to 50% (the 5th notch). Now let it off 2 more notches and maintain this feeling. This is 30%. In time you can just pull in 2 the 3rd notch without the rest!!

Ideally you should engage the pelvic floor before the TVA. To do this imagine a lift. Pull up from the back, middle and front to 10th floor (100%). Let out to 5th and then 3rd for 30% on the Pelvic floor. NB The pelvic floor muscle will ease, but the TVA shouldn't.

The other thing to remember is that you need to get rid of the excess fat around the tummy area in order to see a toned midriff. The only way to do that is by dieting and by doing more cardiovascular exercise like running, walking at a fast pace, aerobics, cycling, rowing and even swimming. The key is to elevate your heart rate and keep it elevated for a minimum of 20 minutes.

Good luck and keep us posted with your progress.

Thank you so much, speedymama. it's a great advice. I'll do the excersises you've suggested.

speedymama · 05/09/2007 12:47

Fedda

For home exercise, how do yo feel about exercise dvds because I and a few of the others use them and they are very good.

I also have an exercise bike that I use but if you have a rower already, that is excellent because it exercises your body all over and is great for elevating your heart rate.

Fedda

Me again!

Squats are terrific not only for toning thighs and hips but for raising heart rate too, especially if you are holding a bag of sugar or the equivalent in each hand. I also do jumping jacks which are good for the increasing heart rate.

Please can I join you? I've been reading through all the good advice on this thread.
I really need to get myself back on track as I weighed myself this am and was horrified to see that I weigh 10st 4!! This means that in a year I have put on over a stone . I'm 5'7 so I'm probably not officially overweight but without my clothes I look like such a lard arse. I've been blaming my newish mirena coil but in reality I know that I've been eating & drinking too much.
I am quite fit. I go to the gym at least 4 times a week and do body pump and spinning and I love running. Should I be doing more though?
As of this week I have stopped drinking and I'm determined to lose this weight. Any tips gratefully received!

fedda · 05/09/2007 13:19

Tahnk you, speedymama. it's wonderful to have so much sound advice.

speedymama · 05/09/2007 13:26

Blousy, welcome!

You are doing a lot of exercise already (well done, very impressive) so I think the focus should be on your diet, tbh.

Alcohol is full of empty calories as it contains so much sugar so cutting down on that is a good start. Also, try and eat more fruit and veg as well as eat smaller portions. For dinner, I endeavour to have 1/3 carbohydrate, 1/3 protein and half vegetables or salad.

The other tip is try not to eat between meals. People often mistake thirst for hunger so drink a glass of water when you feel peckish because you may only be thirsty. It is also a good idea to drink more water anyway.

Good luck!

blousy · 05/09/2007 13:33

Thanks Speedymama! Def need to drink more water and I'm going to try and cut right down on carbs in the evening as we tend to eat lots of pasta or rice dishes.
I keep reminding myself of something I heard some celeb or other say, 'nothing tastes as good as slim feels'!
I have always been very slim until now, even after pregnancy. In fact I now weigh just 2lbs less than when full term with ds1 who weighed 9lb2oz! GOD! How depressing.

3andnomore · 05/09/2007 14:20

Hi All, am sort of back on track this week...done Vicky's Workout yesterday and Davina's Power of 3 today....ratehr upsetting though, how sweatty I got doing it...it's unreal how quick your fitness levels drop again, I mean, it was only like a 2 weeks break, fgs!

Fedda, welcome here....from what I have learned at least 20 minutes of cardio, prefereable per day, lol,. and some toning exercises.
Tae Bo (Billy Blanks) is fabulous for cardio and especially good for abs anyway! Nell McAndrews is another real favourite of mine with lots and lots of cardio Vicky Entwistles is also quite good!

Hello Blousy, and welcome to you too!

Speedy...saw you joint in on 10/10 the othr day, but not seen you since!

To those that know Davina's Power of 3 DVD and know more about this then me.....is the cardio in it really enough to burn fat...what with teh whole 20minute cardio, thing...obviously it's a fab toning DVD anyway, and does get you into a swea, and all that....just wonder if there is actually enough cardio in it, because the cardio spurts are so short.

fedda · 05/09/2007 21:15

Sorry for my asking but what's cardio?
