Simple. You're not eating anywhere near enough for your body to perform it's normal bodily functions. It's grabbing onto any form of fat that it can in order to avoid starvation mode.

There's a reason that the calorie intake for a women is 2000 calories a day - that's what bodies need in order to function.

If weight loss is your goal, then you need to work out a sensible calorie deficit to work with. Use a website like IIFYM.com and put all your information in there - it will tell you how many calories to eat and how to split them between protein, carbs and fats. Then download 'my fitness pal' and track what your eating in there - set your goals as per what the IIFYM website tells you.

Hi Clairetree. Unfortunately if you aren't losing at 800 calories a day for two weeks, then you probably aren't actually at 800 calories a day. It's a pretty simple in/out exercise. Are you weighing and measuring everything you take in? Portions are notoriously smaller than people think they should be.

There isn't any evidence that "starvation mode" happens in normal dieting regimes, I'm afraid. It's a nice theory but it doesn't hold up in reality.

Imsodonewithshit · 20/06/2018 05:34

Thyroid check?

Not actually eating 800cals? 800 cals is the smallest amount of food. Are you weighing/logging everything you eat and drink? MFP is really good for this.

PrimalLass · 20/06/2018 05:35

Join the blood sugar diet thread. It is under the low carb bit on here. There's lots of knowledge on there on what to eat for the 800 cals.

Clairetree1 · 20/06/2018 20:28

thank you for all your inputs. Yes it is definitely 800... I will look at the websites you suggest for ideas. Thank you all

Ignore post one it's nonsense.

Th reality is you will be underestimating your calories, be it due to portion sizes, snacking, or drinks. You would be losing on 800 if you're not, then you're consuming more.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 20/06/2018 20:31

Your metabolism adjusts, eating less than 1200 calories a day is bad for your metabolism because it will slow right down to maintain. Just your body being alive will be burning more than 800 calories a day.

I’m not explaining it that well but I’ve had it drilled into me by years of appointments with dietitians. You need to work out your BMR and eat those calories at a minimum.

QueenOfMyWorld · 20/06/2018 20:38

I never eat less than 1200 so my body doesn't go into starvation mode. You should lose weight on 1200

lljkk · 20/06/2018 20:55

There was someone on here saying how she only at 200-300 kcal/day.
After a few posts, she then said "Oh wait, I just added up all the calories I get from milk in cups of tea and that''s at least 500, so I need to add 500 on."

I'm just saying it's very easy to not see all the calories you're actually consuming.

halfwitpicker · 20/06/2018 20:57

Utter bollocks

MozzchopsThirty · 20/06/2018 21:00

Agree bollocks on the 2000 calories a day

800 is not enough however.
I set mine at 1500 but I work out 4-5 times a week too
Also depends on what those 800 calories are
Your body needs fuel
It will store fat if you don't eat enough to maintain your health

Yokatsu · 20/06/2018 21:05

The metabolism thing was such a small percentage that it won't alter calories in vs calories out by any noticeable amounts .

Either you are really teeny tiny or you are miscalculating your calorie intake. Things that are easy/common to get wrong but have a very large impact: oil in cooking, butter, peanut butter, milk, nuts, ice cream, wine.

QforCucumber · 20/06/2018 21:07

What do you weigh? What is an example of a days intake?

Clairetree1 · 20/06/2018 21:10

Its definitely 800, but it just doesn't seem to be working Sad

I've got 2 months to lose 2 stone for surgery. The surgeon told me to stick to 800 a day for a month, then I'm being weighed again.

I'll be turning up for my weigh in exactly the same weight as I started.

What do you weigh? What is an example of a days intake?

17 stone

apple and banana for breakfast.
small bowl of unsweetened porridge for lunch
small piece of grilled meat and salad for dinner.
2 cups coffee with milk

other drinks which are zero calorie, like green tea, no milk

where am I going wrong?

OP posts:
mummastripes · 20/06/2018 21:14

I'm having this problem OP, I only eat one small healthy meal a day and water and I'm only loosing 1lb a week if at all

Clairetree1 · 20/06/2018 21:14

no salad dressing or anything. skimmed milk in the coffee

NotUmbongoUnchained · 20/06/2018 21:15

You’re not eating enough! I know it sounds counter productive but it’s true.

Clairetree1 · 20/06/2018 21:15

how much do you weigh mummastripes?

OP posts:
mummastripes · 20/06/2018 21:19

I'm 11 stone and need to get to 9.7 stone to be at my pre pregnancy weight

NT53NJT · 20/06/2018 21:20

As mentioned before. 800kcals is nowhere near enough so you are shocking your body into a fight or flight mode so it's choosing to hold on to your fat rather than burn it as energy.

Do you not feel hungry/fatigued etc all the time?.

I'd say up the kcals to around 1200/1500 and see how you get on.

You can always have 1500kcals and increase your excercise outputs so you burn more calories

mrsb06 · 20/06/2018 21:22

How much exercise are you doing, OP?

Tinseltower · 20/06/2018 21:23

You need to up your calories and exercise to keep your metabolism high. At your weight, 1600 will be enough for you to lose weight if you are doing half hour of exercise at least a day.

Yokatsu · 20/06/2018 21:25

Are you due you period?

Todayissunny · 20/06/2018 21:29

It may take a little while for your body to start burning fat. If you don't exercise your metabolism may be sluggish. Could you manage to do some gentle exercise (walking, swimming)? It would help stimulate your metaoism.
