Anyone looking to lose 100lbs plus in 2017-18 - Part 3

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 27/09/2017 19:49

Hello, welcome to the third instalment of the ‘Anyone looking to lose 100lbs plus in 2017’ thread. As we’re getting closer to the end of 2017, I’ve added 2018 for good measure Smile

If you want to read them (but by no means feel obliged!), the first and second threads are here: Part 1 and here: Part 2

We’re a very friendly, supportive group, and I think we’re all seeing some real changes in ourselves and our attitudes to food. It’s a long old road, but it helps to chat along the way Wink Collectively, we’ve lost 612 lbs since the start of the first thread, which is pretty amazing Grin

We tend to weigh in on Fridays or Saturdays, but feel free to join in at any time, with whatever weight loss method you think works best for you. Some of us have lost more than others, but we're all in this together, so if you're losing, gaining or staying the same, it's nice to have some inspiration to keep going.

We’re always welcoming to newcomers, but as with the previous thread, I will make one caveat - we’re all here because we are trying to lose a LOT of weight. If you’re looking to lose the last half stone, or even two or three stone, this might not be the thread for you. Good luck with your goals, but you may find more support with in threads with people who have similar goals.

And with that, I'm off to spam our old thread to fill it up Grin

No dig in the ribs, might need to do it though! Today he ate shortbread, really fancy stuff that we got for Christmas. His excuse: we need to clear to zero before he can start. The house is full of tubs of celebrations, biscuits and assorted crap. I also have in the region of 20 bottles of booze left, mostly wine and fizz. I guesstimate he’ll be clearing to zero until next Christmas Grin

ShyOyster · 09/01/2018 10:45

I checked my weight this morning! Lost 3.2kg in the first week. It’s not loads but it’s a start!

eyeswideshit · 09/01/2018 17:45

Shy that's a brilliant loss! Well done. As long as it's going down I'm happy. I took me years to get this big I'm not going to end up a size 10 overnight.

ShyOyster · 09/01/2018 18:31

Thank you Blush
I carry all my weight round my waist (well, most of it anyway) and I can actually already feel a tiniest bit of a difference!

BreakingSad · 10/01/2018 13:56

Welcome and that's a great start ShyOyster and Eyes well done

Eyes hows the walking going? I couldn't commit to the 1000 miles challenge so tweaked it to the 365 mile, a mile a day.

Notractors I like what Terry Crewe said (and love Brooklyn 99) and I also read somewhere, if you don't feel like doing a workout etc just do it even if it's only 5-10 minutes and more often than not, when you get into it you'll do a full workout. It really is just getting into a habit.

eyeswideshit · 10/01/2018 18:26

Breaking the walking is going ok. Started doing smaller laps of the block more often. I've noticed the louder the music I'm listening to the longer I can walk. Maybe it blocks out the pain! I'm definitely thinking of investing in some proper running trainers with a bit of support.

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 10/01/2018 20:01

Well done Shy and eyes!

Doing well today - this week feels quite long, but think that's always the way after the Christmas/NewYear break. Steps aren't what I'd like, but I'm not doing too badly. Lots of activity planned for the weekend, and I have lots of podcasts to catch up on, so there's no stopping me Grin

I do currently have peanut butter biscuits cooling in my kitchen which are driving me insane with the smell, but I'm not having any DCs are experimenting with baking, so I'm trying to avoid thinking about the inevitable mess, while leaving them to clean up and concentrating on my book Grin

It's on the downhill to Friday from here! Smile

Foolproof diet tip: carefully cook (skimmed milk and sukrin sweetened) rice pudding on the hob, filling the house with sweet smells of nutmeggy yumminess...step away for three seconds to respond to some desperately urgent child's request like finding a vital bit of Lego...return to find the whole pan is now burnt rice pudding and inedible. Agh.

Oh well. The place still smelt nice afterwards!

AnotherOtter · 11/01/2018 16:35

Tractors, that is hilarious that your DD texts you that meme! How are the mystery meals from the clearing out of the freezer going? I have such plans to label everything that goes in mine but I can never be arsed.

Does the fitbit count all the steps while attached to your bra, Lego? That sounds like it solves the doesn't-count-steps-while-pushing-a-pram problem. I hope your third one stays out the washing machine Grin

Moonlight, fingers crossed for your thyroid function test. I have hypothyroidism too and the way I understand it is that each person has their own range of thyroxine doses that will give normal blood results but the best dose is one that does that plus relieves your symptoms. So if you aren't losing weight despite a reasonable effort then could be worth going back to the GP and talking over whether a higher dose might be helpful despite a blood result in the normal range. Don't fouter about with it on your own though as I did that fucking idiot and gave myself horrendous palpitations and anxiety attacks.

Eyes, decent walking shoes/boots are well worth it if you can afford it. I have stupidly shaped feet and when I finally found my current walking boots I was so pleased that it made such a difference.

I hate it when cooking goes wrong like that, B1. The sad reminder of the smell...

I am having a bit of a rough week. On my second day of maintenance as I am hungryhungryhungry. Except I don't think I am really hungry as I feel it even if I've just eaten and it's a bit different, sort of pushier. Had a lot of stress and got a UTI plus my irregular PCOS cycle could be doing anything. I'm just feeling frustrated by how hard this week is when the weeks before just sailed past. Got to KOKO!

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 12/01/2018 15:04

Well done Post and Breaking, and B1rd I hope you've recovered after that rice-pudding disappointment!

Another that sounds like a really tough week, I hope things are picking up a bit for you now?

The freezer experiment has been interesting! I really need to pay better attention to what is being kept where, but we've all survived, and my portion sizes are good - so I'm going to adopt that. I usually use a mug (lined with a freezer bag) to measure batch-cooked meals - spoon the stew/curry/sauce into the mug, so it's filled, then pull out the bag, seal and freeze. It's a good portion for one person, and rest of the plate is filled with veg. It's easier than using the scales, but still giving me control. The scales will reveal whether this is a good approach or not, but I'm quietly confident... Wink

Well done for last week Chesty sorry you are struggling though, hope this week has been easier .

Welcome ShyOyster 3-2kg is a hell of a lot in my book, half a stone - that took me 4 weeks for the first half stone to come off !

Congratulations on 5 stone AnotherOtter , great milestone to pass at start of the year! Agree that plodding on regardless is exactly the key to this. Sorry this week is tough. I find when i’m I’ll I don’t try to lose just eat at maintainence as figure my body will heal better without a calorie deficit.

Lego hope it’s 3rd time luckynwitg this Fitbit and things are going well.

Boredonmaternity hope you are recovered from tonsillitis.

Moinlight it is hard in the dark. I do a couple of early mornings but leaving at thevtime you do that’s obviously out. I think iit’s About forming habits whilst the going is good to get over the hard bits. So hopefully if you can get onto a routine in spring by the time you hit Autumn again it will be easier to sustain. A good playlist helps me .

Eyeswideshut great start ! Definitely get good footwear, makes a difference. I downloaded some running albums when I started walking, found the fast beat helps.

B1rdonawire I blame a lot on hormones! Shame about the rice pudding.

Moonlight, fingers crossed for your thyroid test.

Wel, done Breakinsad , halfway in a week or so is a massive milestone.

NoTractors I love your freezer mug idea, that’s great! I think it sounds very positive for a loss this week.

Notanurse, hope you’re ok.

PostNotInHaste · 13/01/2018 11:43

Thanks Notanurse. If you planning to swim then the Flex 2. I have that and also the Charge 2 as it has the heart rate monitor which I find useful for walking as well as running. It is a good visual feedback to see your heart rate climbing when you walk faster sometimes. It does take a few weeks to adjust to you and at first the calories are too high but it adjusts. I read people saying that and thought it a bit weird but found they are right.

AF appears to have arrived this morning. About 2 weeks early. Again. Friend recommended a menopause book and it did say that large weight loss can trigger changes and I was already well into perimenopause before so guess things are ramping up. The good thing is the weight loss, exercise plus a couple of supplements seem to have night sweats and hot flushes fairly under control. Managed first run this morning since been ill so about 3 weeks. Was really pleased I managed it, just took it very steady. DD’s birthday today so cake and chips for tea.

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 13/01/2018 12:44

I'd count that one as a win too notanurse. That is so frustrating about your gallbladder op - I hope you get some progress soon.

I've been watching Tom Kerridge, and yes I did notice that while he's lost weight doing low carb, he's promoting low calorie for his participants. I'm wondering if there may be tie-in issues - book/scope of low carb recipes for the series? Maybe a bit cynical of me though!

I managed to avoid the peanut butter cookies as I know exactly what goes in them - it's literally just peanut butter, sugar... and an egg. Even with the sugar reduced by at least a 1/3, I can't bring myself to eat them! DCs are showing an interest in what is in processed food (they google images like this Nutella jar) so we've been doing a few 'experiments' at home - layering things like salad dressing, and reading ingredients on labels (how many they can recognise, and different names for sugar etc.) They've done a little of this in school, so I'm just adding to that.

Post - you were right, I have lost this week. "Only" 1 lb, but as we all know, they all add up, so I'm happy with that Smile

Lost this week: 1lb
To lose: 124 lbs
Lost to date: 37 lbs

Loss this week - 12oz
Total- 36lb 8oz
To lose- 63lb 8oz

Bit disappointed as cut down this week and had a few more walks. It’s the keeping going and eventually all adds up though, right?
Struggling with the urge to cut calories to a minimum to lose weight quickly but I know long term I’ll end up putting any loss back on three fold as it’s not sustainable.

it’s tough this weight loss business, isn’t it? Confused

notanurse dietician appointment was really helpful.
Very frustrating about your gallbladder surgery. I think it’s unlikely you will get the surgery until the winter pressures ease, lots of cancelled elective stuff in a lot of Trusts.
The NHS is truly on its knees Sad
Free work lunch you say? I’m obviously working in the wrong department Envy Grin

post amazing! You are so close to 100lbs Shock

AnotherOtter · 14/01/2018 10:55

Starting weight: 241lbs
Current weight: 169.4lbs
Lost this week: 1lb
Total loss: 71.6lbs
To go: 29.4lbs

Thank you for your kind words about my rubbish week. It did pick up and the hunger has just faded away again. I still have a UTI though as the antibiotics haven't cured it so back to the GP. Which is my excuse for why I have still not started my home workouts despite it being halfway through January! I need to get my arse in gear.

Your mug approach sounds very practical, Tractors. Portion size is so important and it's too easy I find to have defrosted something only to realise it's a massive portion but can't refreeze and don't want to 'waste' it. Just need a little stock control man in the freezer who can identify everything and point out things that have been in for a long time.

Notanurse, if you are looking for a fitness tracker that does steps and heart rate then I recommend the fitbit Charge 2. The heart rate monitoring is not 100% accurate and it will give false high readings if it doesn't have a good signal but you can fix that by loosening it and moving it up your arm (the skin there has a better blood flow so is more suitable for the sensor). It bases the calories burnt calculation on your heart rate so is more accurate than using steps or time. But it is only water resistant not waterproof so no swimming (or washing machines Grin). It comes in two wrist sizes. Shop around as the prices vary quite a bit. That is terrible that you still haven't had your gallbladder operation. And ridiculous that you have to do the pre-op assessment again. I really hope your appointment turns up soon.

Well done on getting out running again, Post. Especially with period shenanigans!

Well done everyone who has lost this week or is KOKO Thanks

AnotherOtter · 14/01/2018 11:04

Cross post with Chesty. I'm sorry you are feeling frustrated. Cutting calories right down isn't sustainable, as you said. Most people have rebound binging despite their best efforts and it all turns to shite. That has happened to me twice now so it's moderate restriction only from now on. Could there be water fluctuations in your weights? It's true that differences in salt intake and hydration can affect your weight by several pounds. And then there's hormonal fluctuations in weight too. Weight loss is definitely tough Thanks

ChestyNutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 14/01/2018 12:20

Thanks otter I def get water weight at ovulation.

Am going to have a think about small swaps I can make to reduce calories but not feel deprived I think Flowers

PostNotInHaste · 14/01/2018 13:45

Notanurse, so sorry, managed to miss the bottom of your post, that is not good about your gallbladder. One big incentive for me to lose and keep it off is I think more rationing on treatment will be coming in as the NHS gets more and more stretched.

Well done NoTractors, those pounds definitely do add up!

Hang in there Chesty, frustrating I know but it’s not linear and you may well see it next week. Although it drags it out I think it is better to keep your calorie intake higher as it gives you somewher3 to go when you need to reduce and often when you cut a lot the whole deprivation thing kicks in. Can you find something that weighs 36lbs and lift it? That puts it into perspective I find. What do you like, one us may have a suggestion.

Well done AnotherOtter, under 30lbs to go for you now. Sorry you’re still struggling with UTI though and hope AB’s kick in very soon.

AF seems to have buggered off. My body is very confused !

honeysucklejasmine · 14/01/2018 16:34

Hi all. So. On Tuesday I was admitted to hospital with pneumonia. I'm home again now but a stone heavier because of all the fluids and drugs effects (certainly I didn't eat much!). So I'm just going to recover quietly, wait for that to slide off, then I'll be back to continue.

I'm ok, and the NHS were fucking amazing.

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 14/01/2018 19:40

Oh honey, how scary! Flowers Very glad you're back home and recovering. Recovering slowly is definitely the best way - take care when you do start to feel more normal that you don't overdo it.

I'm joining you on the small swaps to improvement - mainly increasing veg even more, and cutting down dairy as the cheese consumption has crept up Blush. Lots of good advice from Post as usual Smile

Well done on the loss Another and hope your GP can help with other antibiotics Flowers You take care too!

Here's to another week - KOKO everyone (the ones who are healthy with no excuses, that is!)
