Anyone looking to lose 100lbs in 2017 - Part 2

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 04/05/2017 17:47

Hello, welcome to the second instalment of the ‘Anyone looking to lose 100lbs plus in 2017’ thread Smile The first thread is here, if you want to read it: Part 1

We’re a very friendly, supportive group, and we’re all starting to see some real changes in ourselves and our attitudes to food (at least, mine are changing!) Collectively we’ve lost 318 lbs since the start of the first thread, which is pretty amazing Grin

We tend to weigh in on Fridays or Saturdays, but feel free to join in at any time.

I will make one caveat, which I think is quite important for the spirit of the thread - we’re all here because we have a LOT of weight to lose. If you’re looking to lose the last half stone, or even two or three stone, this may not be the thread for you. Good luck with the weight loss, but you may find more support with in threads with people who have similar goals.

And with that little speech done, I’ll shut up now Grin

Hello Workshipthegould my Dd(21) has slipped discs and even after surgery still suffers chronic pain. She goes to the gym and to Pilates and her physiotherapist advised her that there was no exercise she couldn't do, but to stop if any exercise causes more pain than she normally experienced.

Mirabelle wow that's a quick turnaround and glad the recovery is going so well.

irishe · 27/05/2017 21:01

Welcome worship

Fab weight loss, so far. What diet are you following?

With your physical health conditions, particularly your back , I would be cautious regarding the gym unless under supervision of someone who knew what they are doing. Are you seeing a Physio at all who could advise on the most appropriate exercise for strengthening your core, without exacerbating any pre existing conditions?

Hope this doesn't sound like a downer. It is brilliant you are looking to start exercise.

It's just I remember last time I lost weight I was seeing a Physio who was excellent and she said that the most likely time to get injured was after starting exercise, either for the first time, or starting back. She said most people did too much too soon, got injured and never went back.

I accept I am over cautious, but that is because I have learnt the hard way and have existing health issues.

I have heard Pilates is good for building up core muscles, but have never done it.

Whatever route you choose, good luck!

ZestyDragon · 27/05/2017 21:51

Well done irishe and you will get that stone this week. Have you considered exercise bikes or cross trainers? They are ok on my knees.

34lbs is fab notanurse. It's a great feeling to be losing serious weight.

breaking well done. We are all doing so well.

chesty I mentioned pain relief. Sounds like me actually. Your core needs work 😀 I have had to change how I stand and walk but it has made a difference to the pain. I agree with mirabelle. 1200 is very low. I have lost 58lbs eating at least 1800 per day.

worship welcome aboard! And as mirabelle says, we are suffering the loose inner thigh skin. I think it's something we have to accept and realise it's still better to be lighter with loose skin. I walk everyday and gym twice a week for weights. The gym is a full body weights workout. I hate the rowing machine personally as it hurts my hamstrings but I am getting physio for that. Is there no one to do an induction?

Mirabelle, how is the recovery?

irishe · 27/05/2017 22:17

Thanks zesty

Yes, the recline exercise bikes used to be ok. So I am considering it. I call it pre contemplation mode! The time when I am considering making changes but haven't yet. Others may call it procrastination!

I am amazed at how much weight you have lost eating 1800 cals a day.
Is that because you are exercising? I wouldn't lose at all on 1800 as I am totally sedentary. Or if I did it would be so slowly I would combust with impatience!

You motivated long term losers are my inspiration. I need to keep going, forever. Life change not yo yo dieting.

ZestyDragon · 27/05/2017 23:21

irishe I lose on 1800 because I am exercising. Until I got the fitbit I didn't realise just how sedentary I was. I didn't lose weight on 1800 until I started moving more.

On the last thread I wrote in February about hurting my back - I had to use a walking stick for a couple of weeks - I still walked 10,000 steps per day once I got decent painkillers. My back hurts a lot so I split the walks into a morning walk and an evening walk. My job is very sedentary so I need to walk to get the steps I need.

And yeah, its hopefully forever and its bloody hard at times. But we can all come on here and talk. I feel myself I have another dip coming up which won't be good :(

irishe · 28/05/2017 00:07

Yes combining exercise with healthy eating is clearly the long term goal.
I am on 1400cals a day , but that will drop to 1200 before I know it.
For me, I can do it for a while, but not long term. I need to be able to eat more over the longer term, and still lose weight.

The obvious answer is exercise. I know this will sound like excuses, but I have severe arthritis in both knees, clinically meets criteria for double knee replacement, right now. Problem, I am only in my 40's, so consultant wants me to hold on as long as I can.

Exercise is problematic, I regularly injure myself doing mundane boring things like, walking up and down stairs, getting in and out of cars, standing on a bus, you name it. I then avoid doing these things which limits my life.

So quite frankly I am terrified about totally wrecking my knees.

I will find a way forward. At the moment I am happy to be losing weight.

This thread is a great support. We will be here if you dip Zesty.

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 28/05/2017 00:14

Ooooh, lots of chat going on! I can't lose on 1800kcal - I need to be closer to 1500 (or 1545 according to MFP) to lose anything. Even at that, it's slow progress I'm so impatient I'm doing 9k steps per day (walk to and from work) but not particularly active at work.

Zesty, I'm totally in a dip this week - I'm totally bloated in the heat and just not a happy Tractors!

I need a new exercise plan as the gym is just not happening in the evenings - by the time i'm home from work, we've eaten (even if it's a case of heating up something batch-cooked), and sorted out stuff for the next day, it's past 7pm and closer to 8pm, so going to the gym and back means it's almost 10pm, and I need to be in bed by that point, as I've to be up at 6am. I end up strung out and can't sleep, and then I'm grumpy and crawling to bed at 8.30 the next night. It's just not working! Tonight is very unusual for me, as I'm up very late for me - but I took the wrong coffee pot earlier and so I'm dealing with the caffeine high hence the load of waffle Blush

Exercise is the ideal solution but obviously not always easy to do and many people do manage without. It is harder though and I think those of you who have issues with it are doing brilliantly. Irishe that sounds very tough with your knees and I too would be doing everything I could to preserve my knees in the situation. Would swimming be an option at all?

NoTractors I am rubbish in the evenings, I've run out of energy by then. You're already doing 9k steps which is great though. Could you look at doing a weekend gym session instead of the week and up your steps a bit during the week, would a 20 minute lunch time walk work then maybe a 15 minute Leslie Sansone youtube walk once you're cooking tea? The problem with the gym is it's a right faff getting there, something at home that you don't have to get to is easier . I used to pace for 2 minutes whilst I clean my teeth each time.

Zesty what about instead of reaching the dip, making the decision you are going to have a maintenance week or maybe 2 to practice your new found food and exercise balancing management skills? I've seen in a fair few of the MFP success stories people do this. I was going to eat at maintenance for a couple of weeks post op but the eating little, often and bland stuff isn't adding up to maintenance calories so I haven't managed yet but if I haven't managed it before I am most definitely going to for my holiday in July. I want to know I can do this and keep my weight steady well in advance of actually getting to my goal.

Cultofpersonality · 28/05/2017 09:03

2lbs off!
Totally unexpected since it was my birthday this week, and that included lots of cake and a takeaway, but I'll take it!
Hoping to lose the last 2lb next week for 3stone total :)

Start: 280
Total loss: 40
To go: 73
Target: 167

ChestyNut · 28/05/2017 09:28

Morning!

2lbs off
Total 20lbs
80lbs to go.....

I need to stop being negative but seems like such a lot of effort for a small loss. Trying to remind myself it didn't go on over night so it definitely won't come off over night Sad

MinniesAndMickeysNeedCounting · 28/05/2017 09:32

Just had a quick look through the thread, you're doing so well.

I joined you all originally, went off track but since I've been back on it I've lost 8lbs in the last 4 weeks.

I've joined slimming world, I struggle to keep focused, hope that going to a meeting every week will keep me more focused.

MirabelleTree · 28/05/2017 10:24

Belated birthday wishes Cult and well done !

Good morning ChestyNut . Congratulations on this week's loss and for being a fifth of the way to target. It is hard work, there's no way round it and I think unfortunately it is something we will all always have to work on. But as you get further through it starts to get a little easier as your mind has had time to adjust, you start feeling a little bit better, see health results improve, you can wear smaller clothes and people comment on it.

Hi Minnies and welcome back. Congratulations on your first half stone, 8lbs in 4 weeks is very nice and text book weight loss!

I could be wrong but I have a feeling now surgery over I'm at a point where people are going to go a bit strange about my loss. They were comfortable when it was about health for surgery but let's see how they are now. So far I've had 'what are you most looking forward to eating after surgery, pizza? From someone who lost weight pre surgery for something else but started regaining plus I've had 2 people give me chocolate which is most definitely not advised straight after gallbladder surgery.

Plus a comment from a very slim friend 'I don't know what the surgeon was on about saying about your weight, you look tiny sitting there, doesn't she Mirabelle's DH?' To which I replied that I am obese and she started all the no you're not (I very visibly am) and I did think a bit to myself here we go... I'm not being truthful to most people about how much I have lost and need to lose as they often can't get their heads round it and it is frankly easier to lie.

WorshipTheGourd · 28/05/2017 10:48

Is anyone here considering Bariatric surgery.
I am on 'the pathway' but it isnt yet imminent.
I have had very limited info from the NHS about it and am very unsure.

Worship it's no magic fix. If you comfort/emotional eat a lot of work needs to go into resolving those issues or you'll continue to have problems in my opinion.

In my trust we have a service that has consultant, dietician, psychologist and you attend and commit for 12 months before they decide if you will be approved.
Waiting list is 2 years here Hmm

Mirabelle I had the same when I previously lost a lot. It's hard to ignore the " oh you shouldn't lose anymore" " you look too thin" etc.
People are just used to the "big" version of us Flowers

MsHeffalump · 28/05/2017 13:50

Well done everyone with losses this week! Though it's not my official weigh in day, I've been jumping on the scales every day (helps with my motivation) and I've lost the first stone! I have also lost my spreadsheet (another great motivator) thanks to DD figuring out how to do a factory reset on my tablet. Sigh.

MirabelleTree · 29/05/2017 07:20

Thank you NotaNurse With such a lot to lose we all come across issues that others with less to lose are less likely to have. To be able to go through it with others in the same position is invaluable support.

ChestyNut I think you're right but other dynamics start to creep in as well I think maybe? With one friendship I have always been the brains and friend the thin glamorous one. She is just as intelligent as I am but doesn't see it and so says to people I am the brains. After I saw someone I hadn't seen for ages she apparently kept saying to friend that I looked really good. Friend is very supportive but I think if she were to be entirely honest, she is taking a bit of time to adapt to the change, hence the idea of me still losing the same gently freaks her out a bit. I'm ready for people now and am just going to smile and say 'Doctor's orders'.

Worship I have no experience sorry. 12 months sounds like a lot of time to prepare for it if that is standard across the trusts and I figure with a two year weight you could be a long way down . You've done really well so far, maybe decide to see where you are in 6 months time? My advice is for now focus on what you have achieved rather than what you have yet to do and as much as possible on the health benefits.

A friend (who is very thin) is the same age as me and said recently she is struggling with the idea of aging and it's causing a lot of anxiety so she is focusing on her fitness. She said she likes to think her 57 year old self will thank her 47 year old self for having put the work in. I liked that and it is helping me to think of that too.

ChestyNut · 29/05/2017 17:59

I agree Mirabelle that a year seems a long time but I guess it's about seeing that commitment to change and working on issues that led to weight gain so that surgery can work?

Would anyone mind sharing what they have/will eat in total today?

swlondonnanny · 29/05/2017 18:30

This is such a busy thread Smile will read to catch up properly
Chesty re the food had smoked salmon and lamb lettuce for breakfast, chicken livers with chard for lunch and tuna nicoise salad for dinner. As I am doing low carb high fat diet I will still have some coconut latte (with coconut milk and oil) later on to have enough fats today
Mirabelle glad to hear you are taking your time to recover, that's the best way. My DH had 2 stage total hip replacement this year and it never worked when he was trying to speed things up. Also as a typical man he just decided to go cold turkey on his painkillers and it wasn't pretty.
I think I am lucky that my family/friends are supportive of my weight loss or don't comment. But by now they know that if they were trying to force some food on me it wouldn't go down well... Grin

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 29/05/2017 19:08

Evening all! I hit 11k steps today, and going to keep my average for this week over 10k. I did go to the gym yesterday, but it's a very different crowd than the mid-week attendees Very young and testosterone filled boys and I really felt uncomfortable being there alone, which is very unusual feeling for me - normally I couldn't give a shiny shit! So we'll see - I'm going to give it another month, and might look at going elsewhere.

On a better note, had a really tasty meal tonight - baked some chicken breasts and veggies in some fajita-type seasoning. The others had some wraps and guacamole with it, whereas I just had the chicken and veggies - really yummy and filling, and best of all, I have enough for lunch at work tomorrow Smile
Also have a lentil dahl blipping away on the hob, so that's tomorrow night sorted too (and potentially the rest of the week - went a bit overboard Blush)

Love reading this thread.

Week one weigh in this morning and I lost 6.2 lb. feeling motivated.

ZestyDragon · 29/05/2017 20:16

cult, MsH and chesty well done on the weight loss!

Irishe with your dodgy knees you just have to keep at what's working for you. Hopefully as you lose weight your pain will ease up. I have found a difference myself.

Mirabelle how are you feeling? It's interesting you say that about how people react - I am not at that stage yet where people feel weird about it but actually I have one or two friends who will struggle to accept me slimmer. We all have different roles in our friendships I suppose. I actually see one of my colleagues getting a bit uncomfortable if I am no longer one of "us fatties" as she calls us. I irritating thing is she is not actually very overweight but she sees herself as such. I am far bigger. I don't think she likes the changes.

Minnie welcome back :)stage :-D If you don't like that gym though find somewhere else.

Worship I have thought about surgery myself but I get the feeling that its not the big fix. I know one person that did it but ended up slowly stretching her stomach again. I decided to just try again - and I am getting on ok. This thread helps a lot.

Notractors I find 4pm is the teenage boy time. its quite cute. They offer to carry stuff for you but I am actually outlifting them at this

ZestyDragon · 29/05/2017 20:17

Wow snap that's bloody amazing!

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 29/05/2017 20:25

Ha, Zesty you obviously have a much nicer gym catchment area than I do...these lads are definitely ones to avoid on a dark night Wink

Snap - well bloody done, that's fab for your first week Smile

Today's food, for Chesty: one weetabix with berries and full fat milk for breakfast; a hardboiled egg for lunch; pasta bake (out of a jar) for tea; if hungry later on there's fruit and yoghurt. But I should stress that I'm not following any particular diet here, I'm just trying to only eat when I'm actually hungry, and to not fall face-first into a mountain of junk food. Working so far!

Hats off to everyone who manages the public-exercise gym thing. You're braver than I am!
