Anyone looking to lose 100lbs in 2017 - Part 2

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 04/05/2017 17:47

Hello, welcome to the second instalment of the ‘Anyone looking to lose 100lbs plus in 2017’ thread Smile The first thread is here, if you want to read it: Part 1

We’re a very friendly, supportive group, and we’re all starting to see some real changes in ourselves and our attitudes to food (at least, mine are changing!) Collectively we’ve lost 318 lbs since the start of the first thread, which is pretty amazing Grin

We tend to weigh in on Fridays or Saturdays, but feel free to join in at any time.

I will make one caveat, which I think is quite important for the spirit of the thread - we’re all here because we have a LOT of weight to lose. If you’re looking to lose the last half stone, or even two or three stone, this may not be the thread for you. Good luck with the weight loss, but you may find more support with in threads with people who have similar goals.

And with that little speech done, I’ll shut up now Grin

I had an interesting conversation at the gym yesterday. I don't talk about weight loss except on MN because I don't want to be focussed on it or have people tell me that what I'm doing is wrong and I MUST read about some faddy diet that wouldn't suit me anyway. It's particularly good that my family haven't noticed yet because I know my DC would find it hilarious to keep pushing sweets at me and my H doesn't really do 'quietly supportive' he does either 'ignore' or 'take control and piss me off'. Grin I've only told H that I'm cutting down on carb so that he includes a reasonable amount of protein and veg when he's cooking.

I've recently been talking to my personal trainer about it, because he knows loads but isn't pushy. So yesterday we were talking about BMI and what bollocks it is for someone like him, and he asked what weight I am now. Then he told me that he is heavier than me, he stood on his scales, and sure enough he's about 98kg. I was really Shock because he's not big at all. He's about 5' 10" or 5' 11" (though he swears he's 6' exactly) and his sport is triathlon and iron man so he's not a bulgy-muscled body builder type, he's very lean and trim. He's not even particularly big-framed, his shoulders aren't any wider than normal for instance.

Are your home scales on carpet notanurse? That might make a difference to the accuracy. Although clinical scales are always going to be more accurate than home ones no matter how good the home ones are. But good news that if your home scales are off at least you have lost more than you thought and not less.

MirabelleTree · 09/08/2017 13:44

NotaNurse that is great news! Brilliant that you'll only need one GA and 14lb less to lose as well ! I guess different Consultants have different attitudes. Mine has done me a favour in the longterm and was excellent, maybe I got him as the Universe thought I needed a push in the right direction !

That's lovely Notractors

Very interesting about Pt's BMI. Sounds like my friend's DH. No idea what weight he is but he's a cyclist and looks lean but she said he is obese.

My feet have shrunk which I wasn't expecting. Seem to have been permanently weight recently, not a lot of fun.

BettyInc · 09/08/2017 20:45

I'd love my feet to shrink!

Hi all, new here. I started a thread in desperation in chat and was pointed this way! (www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3001667-Weight-thread-desperately-need-help?watched=1&msgid=71058501#71058501)

20 stone and checking in. Looking forward to getting to know some of you better, I'll read back some pages!

@notanurse I had my gallbladder out in Dec 15 and it was the best thing that's ever happened to me!

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 09/08/2017 21:19

Welcome onboard Betty! It's a long old journey, but we're all in this together Smile

Hi Betty and welcome. It's very daunting at the start but as Notractors said we're all in it together and keeping on keeping on and gradually the pounds are coming off.

Cultofpersonality · 09/08/2017 22:09

Small NSV.
A size 16 vest top I've been avoiding has fit me and isn't tight at all!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 09/08/2017 22:44

Hi Betty, welcome. It's lovely here, and everybody cheers when you do well, commiserates when you don't and nobody tells you that you're doing it wrong. Grin

Notanurse I have every confidence you'll get that stone off. I don't know but think what helped me was the walking. Someone told me you're meant to do a lot the week before so I did in case they were right!!

BettyInc a TDEE calculator can be a useful tool tdeecalculator.net/result.php?s=imperial&g=female&age=32&lbs=280&in=60&act=1.2&f=2

Hope you don't mind but I've taken the liberty of putting in roughly what I think your details are. I've read that sedentary is about 5000 steps a day so with your current level of activity to maintain you're looking at somewhere between 1902 which is your Basal Metabolic Rate (what your body needs to exist with no activity) and 2282 which is the sedentary value. So probably about 2100.

Given that, if you eat 1600 cals a day you should see about a pound a week loss. The good news is that although it probably doesn't seem like it at the moment you will gradually be able to increase your activity and then you have a whole load more calories to play with. Notanurse'is a good example, her weight loss average increased as she was gradually able to walk more.

We're doing a variety of different methods. SWlondonNanny'is doing brilliantly with low carb. Fair few of us counting calories, I think a couple have been doing Slimming World. It's about getting started with something you feel you can do , you can always change to something different further down the line.

Protein is your friend with this, it helps you feel fuller for longer. I find chicken as a mid morning snack can really help and I'm a bit gutted I can't eat eggs. Other favourite snacks of the moment are 2 x mini babybel light plus 75g cherry tomatoes which is 99 cals. A key thing for me was not feeling too deprived. I went through a phase of being really strict to lose weight for my op and felt a bit miserable so changed things around. DH is type 1 diabetes so I am a bit aware of low GI carbs which don't cause your blood sugar levels to spike as much which helps stop that desperately needing to eat feeling. Basmati rice, new potatoes and sweet potato all helpful. Smaller plates have made a difference and I try to drink more water.

Another thing a lot of us find useful is eating at maintenance if we have special occasions etc or feel in need of a break. Sorry this is long, I hope there's something useful in there. It can be pretty overwhelming at first and not every day goes right. The key we have all found is draw a line under it when it doesn't and keep on keeping on (KOKO)

ChestyNut · 10/08/2017 09:09

tractors the dress is lovely!

Welcome Betty

Great news about surgery nota hope the waits not too long.

Plodding on this week, no dietician appt today as she's not well, has thrown me a bit.

BettyInc · 10/08/2017 21:04

Thanks for the welcome! I went to the docs today and was weighed- 18stone 5lb which is amazing for me, I've lost a stone recently without knowing. I feel no different though and clothes fit the same. But it's given me a positive boost! So not 20 stone as thought.

Thanks for the snack advice mirabelle as I never know what to eat. Always the same old stuff.

MirabelleTree · 10/08/2017 22:43

That's a shame Chesty, hope she's back next week.

Betty that is really really good news. A huge well done and what an excellent start. It takes a fair bit before you can see it and I think it takes longer to go down dress sizes at the start but then one day you start to notice small changes And it goes on from there. If you have a tape measure take some measurements, good for when the scales don't move for a bit, helpful to have a different measure.

swlondonnanny · 11/08/2017 07:17

Morning ladies Smile
Weigh in at 108.6kg
Loss this week (week 22) -0.1kg
Have reread The Clever Gut Diet book which mentioned that around 6mnths into the diet it is very common to stall/start putting weight again. Body's way of 'fighting' the weight loss. This happened to me a couple of times previously around this time (5mnths). Anyone experienced anything similar back in May/June time? Out of the ladies who started in January?
Really don't want this to go pearshaped now as still have around 4.5 stone to lose to be at healthy weight...
The book also said that if we KOKO and get to one year point it is very likely than to keep the weight off as our body than accepts that as normal weight and doesn't fight it anymore....

MirabelleTree · 11/08/2017 07:30

Well done SWLondonnanny. I started mid November and have been struggling since June when I sort of stalled which I thought was after effects of op and C25K so very interesting to read that. It's just feeling as if it's sorting itself out again and over last 2 weeks have lost 2lb whilst eating at maintenance for a week on holiday. Good to read that body does adjust. I have now reassessed my target.

Loos this week 2lb
Total loss 73.25lb
To lose 37lb

lipstickmaven · 11/08/2017 07:36

Heya, is it too late to join you guys? I've just had my second baby and got a huge shock after seeing pictures of myself and even bigger one standing on the scales. Shock

MirabelleTree · 11/08/2017 07:41

I was losing a stone in around 6-7 weeks. Since start of June (10 weeks ago) I have lost 10lbs so it is coming off but slower - partly due to finding a 7k a week deficit too much to be fair so eating more. But I have noticed I've gone from being fairly consistent to having smaller losses then a bigger one. I've just got past where I gave up last time I tried 6 years ago which feels like a milestone

My shape is changing though , my thighs are firming up and my waist is starting to go in. I think I look smaller than I am. A friend said yesterday I looked thinner and asked how much I'd lost since she'd seen me a couple of weeks ago and was really surprised when I said a pound. I was wrong, it was 1.5lb but even so, not enough that you'd think it would make a difference.

I'm finding the emphasis on health is stopping the ' you don't want to lose too much' comments and people are starting to adjust to new size, I think the slower loss recently has helped with that.

swlondonnanny · 11/08/2017 07:49

Mirabelle thank you for that link, find it very interesting . Based on that I could have 2500-2800 calories a day to maintain my current weight! That seems way too much!!! Also I need to lose another 6 stone to be at my 'ideal' weight. Wonder if any of those 'ideal weight formulas' took into account 34/36 GG boobs....
Chesty sorry about no appointment, hopefully the one next week will happen and go well for you
Betty Welcome Smile Yes I do low carb high fat which I find suits me best. Think longterm will go back to Paleo (good for my Hashimoto's)
Also it seems that all the good fats I am eating are doing wonders for my skin (as DH commented yesterday)
Notanurse everything crossed for good news next week re the job interview. Also great to hear about your hospital appointment! One stone lighter than you though Grin must have felt great.
The shoes - my feet were 39/6 for a long time but they are very wide. As very few shops sell wide shoes I started to buy 40/6.5 or recently 41/7. They we always a bit too long but ok. It gets 'interesting' now as 39/6 are fitting but way too tight. 41/7 too big. Very few shops sell 40/6.5. Also trying to get new BMT but there are hardly any shops which keep them in stock so can't really try them on. All of them expect you to order online and return if not good (and can be upto 30 working days to refund) and as they are quite pricey I can't really afford that... Sorry for a rant, hate hate hate shoeshopping with passion!
Cult great NSV, love that feeling when something fits(and looks good on) after a while Smile
Well, I am 42 today... feels weird. Flanking a little afternoon tea for a couple of friends on Sunday. Really couldn't have picked worse thing to do while lowcarbing. Hopefully the cheesecake will bake ok

MirabelleTree · 11/08/2017 08:12

Happy Birthday SWLondonnanny WineFlowersCake. Have a lovely day.

I ate about 2300 a day last week which wasn't quite enough to maintain. Moderate exercise at my weight is 2360 , heavy is 2627 which I think I could have eaten as I've lost an extra pound over the 2 weeks instead of the pound I was going for. We were active though, I ran 13.5 k and step count was 80k over the week including the running plus 2 days of traveling where it wasn't as high (slightly weird typing that, not the sort of thing I thought I would )

Hi everyone

Week 7
Starting weight 100kg
current weight 91kg
this week's loss 1kg

I'm going away for a week on Sunday and we always have dinner every night at the local pub when we are there. The food is very good, and fresh cooked not pre-made frozen stuff, but the portions are for country farmers, so huge with tons of carbs. I will just concentrate on keeping my protein up and my carb as low as possible and only worry about my blood glucose levels as the point of a holiday is to relax not get anxious about not having full control over my food. Also, the woman who cooks there does the best bread and butter pudding I have ever tasted, so I always have it once during the time we are there even though I'm lactose intolerant, and I will this time too, just once. Grin

Welcome lipstickmaven, it's never too late to join. Congrats on your baby. Grin

Happy birthday swlondonnanny, I hope you have a lovely day.

MirabelleTree · 11/08/2017 12:17

So sorry Lipstickmaven, didn't see you there, welcome Smile

Well done BlackAmericano

Hercy · 11/08/2017 16:32

Hi everyone, I'd like to join the group please....

I started in January 2016, with pretty much exactly 10 stones to lose. I had a few ups and downs but by December had lost 5 stones (15st 10lbs). Not following any particular plan, but just eating healthily and exercising 5 or 6 days a week, plus around 10k - 15k steps a day.

I wanted to take it easy over the Christmas break and inevitably put some weight on, but managed to get back into it in early January 2017 and had got within a whisker of my lowest weight. Then I got ill - nothing major, a flu type affair which left me weak and dizzy and off exercise for a while. Then there were a lot of social occasions. Then I don't know. I completely lost my way, binging on junk and not going to the gym at all.

I was upset when I saw the scales start with 17st again. Disgusted when they then started with 18st and absolutely horrified when they started with 19st. And that's where I am now.

I'm so pissed off that I regained so much of the weight I lost, so pissed off that I could have been at goal weight by now if I'd just have kept going.

But it is what it is, so I'm getting back on it. Frustratingly, I have an old knee injury which means exercising when I am this overweight is difficult. But I hope to ease back into my old exercise routine once I've got 1 stone - 1.5 stones off.

Short term goal is that we are going away in 5 weeks - UK with dog. we went to the same place last year when I was 3st light than my current weight and we did loads of walking (around 30k steps per day). So I want to get as much off as possible before then to make it easier on my poor knee!

Sorry for the essay, look forward to getting stuck in with you all.

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 11/08/2017 17:48

Hi lipstick and Hercy - welcome! Get stuck in, we're all very supportive here.

I'm so very glad it is the weekend - I'm looking forward to a lie-in! The DCs are starting to enjoy them too, and I'm unashamedly encouraging it Grin Evening plans include one white wine spritzer for me (DCs having fizzy water in a fancy glass), a posh candle lit, a film on the tv, and duvets on the sofa for all of us. I've been looking forward to it all day Smile
