Anyone looking to lose 100lbs in 2017 - Part 2

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 04/05/2017 17:47

Hello, welcome to the second instalment of the ‘Anyone looking to lose 100lbs plus in 2017’ thread Smile The first thread is here, if you want to read it: Part 1

We’re a very friendly, supportive group, and we’re all starting to see some real changes in ourselves and our attitudes to food (at least, mine are changing!) Collectively we’ve lost 318 lbs since the start of the first thread, which is pretty amazing Grin

We tend to weigh in on Fridays or Saturdays, but feel free to join in at any time.

I will make one caveat, which I think is quite important for the spirit of the thread - we’re all here because we have a LOT of weight to lose. If you’re looking to lose the last half stone, or even two or three stone, this may not be the thread for you. Good luck with the weight loss, but you may find more support with in threads with people who have similar goals.

And with that little speech done, I’ll shut up now Grin

Notanurse I want to try and lose 2lbs this week and had my Dad down at the weekend so thought it would be a way of getting back on track for the week. I've also read that it can help when menopausal so had that in the back of my mind and can see that potentially it could help with maintenance. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it at the moment and not planning another at the moment but can see it might be a useful tool to have up your sleeve for some situations.

Rumtopf · 29/06/2017 08:49

There are meant to be a lot of associated benefits with fasting and doing the 5:2, did you watch the Michael Mosley documentary? When I'm in the swing of things I find them quite easy to do, not so much at the moment.

Thanks for the support re dd, teenagers are just so mentally exhausting. I hate having to have headspace for all of the things she should just be getting on with and doing, I don't feel we ask her to do much but obviously in comparison to her friends she feels like Cinderella! For reference she is expected to feed the dogs twice a day, take up the rubbish bins and bring them down once a week and keep her room and bathroom clean and presentable, and do her homework promptly without complaint. Oh and walk the dogs when I haven't had opportunity to, this is probably once or twice a week.
At this age my Mum expected me to make dinner two evenings a week, clean out the fire daily and re-lay it, do my own laundry and the ironing for all the family and run the vacuum around if it needed doing as well as keeping my own room clean. I worked as a waitress at weekends too. I just don't get the abject laziness! It's infuriating.
So, her iphone is still languishing at school where they confiscated it for her acting like an arse, this is fine as I'll pick it up tomorrow but she's not having it back. I'm making her shut down her account on Instagram and snapchat as they are just too distracting and she can only use the laptop downstairs to do homework. For the time being she will be using my old Nokia for texts and calls. She also thinks I'm utterly outrageous for being cross and telling her I'm disappointed in her poor choices! Aaarggghhh.
Although her Dad has actually been supportive and she will be on a tech ban there this weekend too (this makes a huge change as whenever she's had a punishment before he has rejoiced in letting her do exactly as she wants there, he's an arsehole). I shall be chilling out with dh at home with plenty of gin, enjoying the peace and quiet!

Sorry for the rant Grin

MirabelleTree · 29/06/2017 10:43

I haven't seen the Michael Mosely documentary but heard a summary which did sound very interesting.

Have some virtual Wine Rumtopf, I feel your pain. DD at that age was expected to feed the dog once daily, collect dog poo from garden, make pack lunch, walk dog as required and sort her bedroom and do homework. The bedroom was a huge bone of contention as she is incredibly messy, she has a diagnosis of dyspraxia and is like a hurricane. One summer she didn't empty her canvas school bag and there was food in it and the whole thing started composting, a particularly low point!

In the end up I gave up on her bedroom and literally didn't empty it. She lived away from home for six months last year and was apparently tidier but her room slipped at Xmas when back. It is currently empty with new storage going in as the hope is a remodel will break the association with her untidy teenage years. She is more optimistic about this than I am.

Being a couple of years further down the line my advice is pick your battles very carefully then when you do , see them through. The 'I'm disappointed in you' had more effect than getting cross!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/06/2017 11:00

Is it ok if I join you? I'm 100kg and I need to be between 53kg and 72kg for my BMI to be normal. TBH I'm aiming for mid-range which means I only have about 80-90lb to lose. I know that it's psychologically easier to all be in the same boat, so I'll seek out a different group if you prefer.

Also, am I being weird to quite like that my starting weight is 100kg? Wink It's a lovely round number, which is pleasing in itself, and it'll make calculating my total loss so much easier.

MirabelleTree · 29/06/2017 11:41

BlackSugar you are very welcome. We're all at different stages now and all had slightly varying amounts in the beginning. I can see that bang on 100kg makes it nice and easy to calculate!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/06/2017 11:57

Thank you. Grin I'm actually 97kg now as I started last Thursday. I'm pretty sure that most of that loss has been fluid from the nighttime weeing, I'm hoping that's going to stop once my body gets used to the new regime.

I have type 2 diabetes and my blood glucose has been gradually becoming less well controlled and was worryingly high at a blood test about 5 months ago. I was prescribed some new medication, which had a side effect of making me hungry ALL THE TIME and when I was retested my blood glucose had flipping well gone up. So something serious needs to happen.

I've been meaning to do the Blood Sugar diet or the 5:2 diet for quite a long time now, but real life means that I have very little headspace or time to read up on it, do the shopping lists, calculate calories and cook separate meals.

What I'm doing instead is not eating outside of meals. If I have a busy morning then I have breakfast, otherwise I just hold off eating until lunchtime when I have something high protein with or without a small amount of low GI carb. I make regular dinner for the family and eat until I'm full, but only have a small portion of carbs. So about half the week I have two meals a day and the other days I have three meals. I'm lucky that I don't have a huge appetite at a single sitting, so an ordinary amount of dinner fills me up even if I was ravenous at the start. Grazing is my downfall.

I've been keeping an eye on my blood glucose, and have been taking a lot of readings to see how different foods affect it and for how long. I don't usually go low, but I have gone a bit low twice in the week. I need to keep an eye on that as my reaction times would be affected and I wouldn't be safe to drive if I went low. I'm planning to get some mini bags of liquorice sweets to carry with me in case I need them when out. I hate liquorice so there's no worry that I would be tempted by them when they're not needed. Grin

I'm hungry a lot, but I keep reminding myself that the new medication made me hungry anyway so eating something would only make a difference for 20 mins or so and then I would be hungry again. That makes it easier to resist nibbling.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/06/2017 12:14

I'm slowly reading my way through this thread. You lot are all inspirational. Keep going (and keep me going please).

MirabelleTree · 29/06/2017 12:23

Flipping heck that is going some in a week, well done Grin Sounds like you are pretty sorted with the food. DH is type 1 so we always carry orange juice wherever we go. He tests before driving for peace of mind as with insulin likely to have more fluctuations of blood sugar.

I think learning to deal with hunger is something we all have to do. I used to feel sick and dizzy if I didn't eat but that has gone now thankfully and I know I won't keel over if i don't eat for a bit and I had forgotten what it was like to be properly hungry.

Rumtopf · 29/06/2017 13:25

Hi BlackSugar, 100kgs is a nice round figure to start with and it sounds like you've already had a brilliant first week!

Sorry for the rant, I feel better now! I've got monster pmt so I don't think that's helping much.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/06/2017 13:33

That was a perfectly understandable rant Rumtopf. My DS is currently device-free and in disgrace after he disappeared while on a school trip and had to be picked up by the head teacher and brought home. Hmm

I forgot about your gallstones for a moment Notanurse, definitely don't try fast in with them.Thank goodles your scan is soon.

My wardrobe is on the empty side !

ChestyNut · 29/06/2017 16:56

blacksugar what treatment are you on For your diabetes? They recommend 15-20g quick acting carb to treat a hypo, is there enough in the liquorice?

Good luck for your scan nota what sets your gallstone pain off? I get terrible pains if I eat too many eggs.
I also have a wardrobe of several sizes Grin

mirabelle I'm not as hungry as I was at the start.

I'm stuck in a rut already, sticking to the same foods all the time. I'm a bit apprehensive to eat different things incase I don't lose Sad

What sort of things are you all eating for main meal?

MirabelleTree · 29/06/2017 17:12

www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/chicken_in_a_creamy_84614 With a pack of diced chicken and split into 3 servings with new potatoes and broccoli

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/lentil-sweet-potato-curry Split into 4. Did it with roast veg yesterday.

We shop in Aldi and I like their Caribbean chicken (175 cals per chicken breast), Bombay potato side (226 cals) Saag Aloo side (212) Mini veg samosas (53 ish I think)

Eggs used to set my gallbladder off and I haven't dated try post op yet.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/06/2017 17:19

I think there would be enough sugar in four or five Liquorice Allsorts to treat a hypo. Jelly Babies are usually recommended, but I love them so can't be trusted to carry them around in my handbag.

I'm on metformin, glickoside (sp?), Januvia and a new one that I can't remember the name of. Because my blood glucose seems to be spiralling upwards I'm under threat of slow-release injected insulin. I really want to avoid that for a few more years.

Rumtopf · 29/06/2017 20:56

BlackSugar are you cutting out as much carbohydrate as possible? My Dad is type 2 and gets on best eating a Mediterranean type diet but low carb and low sugar. If he does have any carbs we make sure they're low GI and therefore slow release so his sugar levels don't spike.

I've got a whole range of clothes from size 12 to size 22, there are so many things I can't wait to wear again!

We eat lots of fish and veggie meals so dinner for us is something like a marinated salmon steak with a chopped salad with one pouch of quinoa, brown rice and pumpkin seeds between the three of us. Or a tuna steak with stir fried vegetables and bean sprouts. Or a melenzane parmiagana with a salad. I've just bought some really nice steak burgers with a pepper crust for tomorrow night and will serve them on a green salad with fresh onion and blue cheese dressing, broad beans and courgettes and a few new potatoes each.

I feel a real difference with not eating meat or dairy and only having carbs occasionally.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/06/2017 21:49

I'm having less carbs. I don't want to be eating different things from the rest of the family. We generally have lower gi carbs anyway, half and half brown and basmati rice, granary bread, boiled new potatoes etc. No sugar in the last week. I miss sugar.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/06/2017 21:57

I am checking my blood after meals, not every day but for most of the past week, and they've been ok-ish. There are a few meals that will have to change, including my favourite summer breakfast of fruit yoghurt with oats and water. I might try that again with natural yoghurt instead. But at the moment I'm not having breakfast every day anyway.

Rumtopf · 30/06/2017 07:40

Lost this week - 2lb
Total loss - 15lb

Yay it's going in the right direction!

MirabelleTree · 30/06/2017 09:50

Well done Rumtopf, the first stone done and dusted!

Rumtopf · 30/06/2017 11:53

Thanks :) also a NSV too as I just tried on my size 18 Hilfiger denim skirt (without much stretch to it) and it fits!

What's everyone up to over the weekend?

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 30/06/2017 17:13

Well done Rum! Smile Hope everyone else is KOKO-ing Smile

Absolutely NO plans for the weekend, so hoping the rain has gone and we can have a very long walk somewhere. It's so cold, I think there may be something warming once we're finished! DCs wanted pizza tonight as school is out for summer, but we're having a rather tasty and massive
chicken satay salad instead (if I can get them to stop nicking all of the sauce!)

You know what I've just realised? Nobody in the family knows that I'm on a diet. I wasn't keeping it a secret, I had just failed to mention it. Before, when I've done WW, I had to consider what was allowable, weigh out portions etc. It was a faff and a fuss and really obvious to all. But now I just don't eat between meals and eat less carb at the meal. And nobody notices. Today H brought home some cakes for dessert, I said I'd have mine later and nobody thought anything of it. I can just leave them on the side and the DC will polish them off for me. It's so much easier.

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 30/06/2017 20:35

Makes the change feel much more sustainable, doesn't it BlackAmericano? (My go-to caffeine hit btw Wink)

I distinctly recall portions of my childhood observing my DM go through fad diets, not eating with the rest of us, and worrying about being 'slim' (a word I hate, even now) that I'm determined my DCs won't see me do that. Not that I've been the best example to them being the size that I am, but I'm hoping it will pay off Smile
