Flowers for two, ariston, and anyone else who needs them.

I went to yet another a 3rd birthday party today so had a bit of birthday cake. The sugar rush made me feel really weird for a good 45 minutes! Amazing what your body gets used to in what has only really been a few weeks. I was a proper sugar junkie before Blush

Cutting out sugar and carbs can definitely give you headaches.

twofloorsup · 11/03/2017 18:31

Thanks Beela.
Quite scary the difference isn't it !

PosiePootlePerkins · 11/03/2017 21:49

Beela I had a similar experience myself this evening, we went out for dinner and my two boys had a cookie dough dessert. I tried a spoonful and boy it was sweet! Really sickly, I don't think I could have eaten very much of it at all. Urgh, feel a bit awful letting them have so much sugar, but then I think it's important to be able to incorporate treats now and then without feeling guilty. Really hard knowing how to bring them up with a sensible attitude towards food.

Its difficult isn't it Posie. I have three boys. Two are grown men (28 and 25) and my youngest is only 8. The eldest struggles with his weight, in a similar way to me I think - he's quite like me in character - he lost loads a year or so ago, then put it all back on again. The middle one has a physical job and goes to the gym a lot, so looks fit, but doesn't half eat a lot of rubbish! My little one has always been slim, and also didn't seem to want to eat when he wasn't hungry, but recently has started to look a bit podgy, so I am trying to do something about it (limiting sugary drinks, only allowing fruit snacks etc.) but like you say, I don't want to give him a complex and a bad attitude to food like me... and treats are important - he's certainly already aware that mum is frequently, 'on a diet'. If anyone has any top tips for not passing on your hang-ups and bad habits to your children I'd love to hear them! I'm afraid it's too late for my adult sons, but would love to spare the little one Sad

beela · 12/03/2017 07:38

posie and please it's so hard to know what to do! No s is brilliant though. I haven't even mentioned it at home (partly why I love this thread so much!). If dc are having a snack I just tell them I'm not hungry. And they see me eating normal portions of normal food.

One of ds's friends is only allowed sweets once a week, but then he gets really excited and eats a family size bag of haribo! I can see him going crazy when he is older and has the power to get hold of his own sugar supply. I think too much restriction can lead to problems too. It's impossible to know where the balance should lie!!

PosiePootlePerkins · 12/03/2017 07:40

Please I have always tried not to talk about being on a diet although I'm sure my boys have picked up on it over the years. Instead I try and talk about making sensible choices and having treats. In reality though they do have too many treats. The other thing I have been able to do is find an activity that they both love. Neither of my boys are particularly sporty, we are not a football family, swimming they can swim but don't love it. However for the past year they have been going to a self defence class called Choi Kwang Do and the eldest who is almost 13 absolutely loves it. He is now doing 2 hours on a Friday evening and one hour on a Saturday morning, completely his choice to do this amount. I wish I had found my 'thing' at his age, I remember doing trampolining at school and loving it but I don't think my parents could have afforded to let me go to lessons.
Anyway I guess we just do our best, and having an awareness is a good start!

Managed to not snack yesterday and left some chips and dessert as I was so full eating out last night. Progress!
Have a good day everyone Smile

beela I agree NoS is great for getting the message across without banging on about it! I also agree that they do need to be allowed some treats, too many restrictions and you're just making it into an issue. Such a tricky line to tread!

I've found that now I don't Hoover puddings up like they're going out of fashion I am naturally bringing less of it into the home. (Selfish cow) Wink

I try to keep the biscuit tin full for the kids and not restrict them food wise as my mum did it to me and I think that's where my love of sugar began.

No cakes sweets biscuits etc , of course when I had my own money that's what I spent it on.

It is a fine line to cross , my youngest used to have to endure the slimming world meetings every week with me.

Now I try to focus on the benefits of fruit and vegetables such as good skin hair and nails. My two boys aren't really buying it but dd is.

Bestbees · 12/03/2017 08:41

Hi all.

Did this for a bit but lost my way so sneaking back. I am doing 10 portions of fruit and veg and no sugar for lent. But this has seen me mainlining bags of dried fruit. Need to reign it in and this is the most sensible plan out there!

PosiePootlePerkins · 12/03/2017 08:57

Welcome back bestbees! Smile

Hello Bestbees. Hello everyone 😀
Fishing for reassurance tonight!! As told by my doctor, Ive been on a no fibre diet this weekend, followed by no food tomorrow 😢 and then a night of laxatives! I apologise for the too much information. On Tuesday I will be looked into from the bottom and the top and I'm very anxious. I'm hoping my no snacking will help me find the no eating less difficult but it's still going to be an unpleasant experience. 😬

twofloorsup · 12/03/2017 19:18

Ariston an old work colleague of mine had the same thing and said it wasn't as bad as expected.
Good luck.
Hello Bestbees.

AristonAndOn · 12/03/2017 19:42

Thank you. I think the prep is worse in many ways

Bestbees · 12/03/2017 19:44

Sounds nasty Ariston. But I agree that the lead up is aways the worst bit. Good luck. Are you allowed fluid? Green tea helps with hunger pangs.

beela · 12/03/2017 19:50

Evening ariston. DH has to do that every 3 years for screening. It's not that nice but iirc he is allowed clear liquids (consomme included) and jelly too on the no food day. They give him a mild sedative for the procedure itself. As you say, I think the prep is the worst bit.

It usually takes him a couple of days to feel on top form afterwards as well.

Hope it goes ok Flowers

AristonAndOn · 12/03/2017 20:30

Yes I'm allowed fluids. I've got green tea so I'll try that. They are going down the throats too. My mum says it was the worst thing ever!!

PosiePootlePerkins · 12/03/2017 22:23

Oh Ariston just read your update Flowers Sending lots of positive thoughts your way and really hoping that all is well. Please let us know how you get on.

AristonAndOn · 13/03/2017 06:15

Thank you everyone. 😊😊😊Slightly panicking overnight as I forgot to tell the consultant that I still breastfeeding and whether the laxatives and sedation are an issue. So on the phone this morning and hopefully all will be well.

Bestbees · 13/03/2017 06:45

Hope it goes well.

Planning works for me so here is todays. The bitin brackets is f&v portions. Trying for 10 a day.

Thats interesting yumyum and sounds sensible. Maybe the other way is to think of portion size as 60 rather than 80 g.

Plan for today
Breaksfast avo toast, pear, oj (3)
Lunch thai veg curry, suace madeof bnut squash. Apple (3)
Dinner butter bean and chorizo stew with greev veg (4)

PosiePootlePerkins · 13/03/2017 06:50

That all sounds delicious bestbees!
I have weighed and have maintained, I feel like my weight loss has stalled but trying not to panic and just stick with the plan.

OP posts:
Bestbees · 13/03/2017 07:17

Oops sorry ignore the bit about portion sizes, was copy and pasting.

Posie have you reconsidered/ think you need to rejig portion sizes? By trying to eat 10 a day i am finding i need to bump something say rice down to make room for more veg. Because the focus is on more veg not less rice it doesnt seem too deprivational/ diety.

AristonAndOn · 13/03/2017 10:48

Bestbees that does sounds really delicious. I'm actually jealous. I've been on this no fibre diet with no fruit and veg and I am missing it sooo much. My body is actually craving healthy stuff so that is a positive. I'm having a crisis at the mo. The consultant has just told me I can't breastfeed for 2 days after procedures. 😢 I can't express so think I'm going to cancel until I can think of an alternative.

twofloorsup · 13/03/2017 10:52

Oh nightmare !
I don't think your baby will be happy with that Shock
Did they not think to ask you before booking it ? Fools !

Cocopopsrule · 13/03/2017 10:53

ariston sorry to read you have to have these procedures done. Hope it all goes well.

Wishing everyone a good week.

AristonAndOn · 13/03/2017 11:03

Well she's not a tiny baby so I don't think they thought of it and I was so nervous, I forgot to ask. I've been googling the procedures with sedation and the horror stories 😱
