Age:45
Starting weight: 19st 10lbs on 01/01/17
Goal: 9st 10lbs
Plan: low carb, high fat

Well, it's the biggest I've ever been. Feel horrid, but determined to make this the last year of being a fat person. I''m going to diet the shit out of this mess I'm in! I've see threads to lose 100lbs, but not 140. If anyone else is in the same scary boat and fancies friendly, non-judgmental journey sharing, please say hello and share away.

'low carb is unhealthy blah blah blah'. Well I've found something that works for me so do bore off...well that's what I'd say if I was braver!

Even though I think I'm doing the opposite diet to most of you, I agree. It's all about finding what's going to work for you. I was never a big meat person, so low fat works well with my current lifestyle and health needs (except the loss of cheese and icecream - I miss those guys!) But I know low carb gets amazing results.

Ultimately I think it's so funny that when I was packing the weight on nobody had a word to say about the cakes in the cupboard and the pizza in the freezer, but as soon as you say you are dieting people want to put your food choices under a microscope and tell you all the ways it may be bad for you. That's why I'm not telling the 'usual suspects' in my life that I'm dieting. I just don't need the hassle.

10stonestolose · 11/02/2017 16:31

Thanks Gator, I will do. And snap, I also have loads of sizes (from a 22 down to a 10) in my the wardrobe. It is through yo-yoing with me though. Agreed, best just not to get into diet related discussions with the know-alls.

Morning all, just 2lbs off on the scales this morning, but pleased I'm now into the 17s and 25lbs off altogether. I think Sunday is the worst craving day for me and it's pouring down outside, so it would normally be a film and piles of sweets and chocolates this afternoon. Oh how times have changed! Better try and keep busy to keep me out of mischief.

Evening all!

Just finished dinner (spag bol and blueberry pancakes) and stopping now for the night - weigh-in tomorrow so no snacking! It's half term so though so think I'll just be nipping in to get weighed and not staying for the chat, not sure ds2 will sit quietly that long

Had afternoon tea out yesterday (4 mini sandwiches, mini quiche, mini bruschetta, scone with jam and cream, lemon cheesecake, strawberry and champagne jelly, a Bakewell tart and a macaroon, apple tea and 2 glasses of prosecco - was amazing!) but i didn't have any breakfast or dinner so hoping it's not terrible on the scales....

OrlandaFuriosa · 12/02/2017 23:26

Disaster today, 800 cals over my net target, including exercise. And yesterday at equilibrium including exercise. So tomorrow basically a fast day. I know why, but not helpful.

But,
I'm taking pleasure from being out of the very obese category,

my swimsuit is getting to the point where it is ludicrously easy to put on, iswim

My jeans have just got too long having been the right length, as they don't have to stretch do far width wise, iswim,

And a lovely person yesterday said I looked ten years younger!

If I keep going like this, after another few stones (ok, 5), I'll be 7 again... er, may be not...

Grin

Onwards and downwards...

Littlepleasures · 13/02/2017 02:04

Been lurking on this thread for some time but wanted to wait to see if my head was in the right place to start yet another attempt to tackle my weight.
Jan 1st. 18 stone 10
Feb 12th. 17 stone 1
Age: 58
It might be too soon to hope but I feel I've turned a corner after dieting and putting the weight back on for the last 40 years.
Having tried every diet under the sun in that time, I've eventually worked out what works for me

  • No calorie counting *No low fat products *butter, olive oil, cheese and cream ok. Use freely *No milk *No processed, sugary or fast foods *Keep carbs under 120g per day
  • High protein with every meal *No more than two meals a day
  • Unlimited salad and green veg
  • Count fruit and starchy veg as carbs *Eat only if hungry. *No snacking. Eat only a full meal *Drink plenty of water
  • Achieve all my Fitbit targets each day, 10,000 steps, 30 active minutes etc *Do some light weights most days *No alchohol. Never been much of a drinker so no big deal for me

In the last couple of weeks I have found I sometimes only eat one meal a day. As it's protein and fat rich with lower carb, I stay satisfied for ages with no cravings. I cook from scratch and eat as large a portion as I want.
In the morning I sometimes have a coffee with cream. I find the fat in the cream keeps me going without getting hungry.
I still can't get into a regular gym routine as I'm a bit of a hibernator in the winter but I've got a step and some 3lb weights at home and it's amazing how easy it is to get those steps and active minutes in.
Today my Fitbit told me I'd used 3200 calories today and I've had a day at home in my pyjamas.
I'm retired now so I've got more time to spend on me with very little in the way of extra stress or responsibility so maybe that's making a difference.
I've also taken up crochet to do when I'm sitting down in front of the telly. It's helped to break that habit of mindless eating.
It's still early days yet so I'm not getting too excited yet but I really think I have found something that's sustainable for me because it's not the losing weight that I find hard, it's keeping it off in the long term.

MalmseyWhine · 13/02/2017 08:30

Hi Littlepleasures, glad to hear you have done so well and it sounds like your head is in the right place.

I think it's really important to work out what is an ideal way of eating for you. I would be quite happy on two meals a day - a substantial brunch/lunch and a lighter early evening meal - but that doesn't fit in with work/family etc. I've felt obligated to cook a substantial evening meal as well that I end up eating. I'm working my way towards finding the balance that will work long terrm.

I've weighed today. A week on 5:2 and I've lost 2lbs Smile. I might change my weigh day to Friday, after my second fast though. I'm fasting again today which means 500 cals in total for the day. I'll have tea/water until about 4pm then have a 40p calorie pre prepped meal (salmon & veg). Tomorrow I then eat normally up to a max of 2000 calories.

I'm in London today so will also hit my step count.

Happy Monday everyone.

OhHolyFuck · 13/02/2017 10:38

Hi littlepleasures 👋

Weigh-in went far better than expected, 3.5lb off! Makes 11lb altogether 😊

So 3lb to go to 1stone - my initial aim was 7lb a month so gives me two weeks to get this 3lb off to stay on track but this week is half term so no pt session and lots more temptation tbh

Will koko though, have a good day everyone!

Lotsawobblybits · 13/02/2017 11:07

Happy New Week everyone- nearly half way through February!

10stones 2lb off- Fantastic! You are not far off your 3rd target now as well. you should be really proud of yourself.

Holy That afternoon tea sounds divine. Hope you have a good loss today at weigh in.

Orlanda You have so many positives to look on as achievements- bet you will be able to pull it back no problem.

Malmsey Congrats on 2lb loss, thats good going! I always end up walking miles in London as well, always a bit surprised when I see my step tally at the end of the day.

Welcome Littlepleasures to our lovely thread. I agree, the first battle of weight loss in the mind. Sounds like you have a plan.

Hit the 2 stone off this morning - so happy with that. Total loss 28lbs!! Feel a little lighter on my feet, but maybe it's just psychosomatic. Another 2lbs and that is 10% of starting weight, it doesn't sound much now- but on the 1st of Jan I never thought I would get there!

Funny- I also have clothes from a 16-24, and even a 14 skirt that I last wore in 2002! Blush

Some people really are just diet bores- I don't talk about this in real life with many people as everyone has an opinion. Sometimes it is their problems they are projecting though- and even people who outwardly look very slim and a healthy weight often have equally troublesome relationships with food/eating .

Flibbertyjibbit · 13/02/2017 13:17

congrats on all the great losses everyone.

welcome littlepleasures this is a great thread, hope it helps you as much as it has me.

I was in a rush this morning so didn't weigh, shall weigh tomorrow morning instead.

Hope you all have a good week.

NarcsBegone · 13/02/2017 14:42

Hi all, welcome little.
I have clothes from a 10 to 26, my size 12 clothes I've kept are all beautiful and I really really want to wear them again.
I've been food shopping and so I'm stocked up on healthy things and my hot chocolate which really helps to keep the cravings at bay. I've been feeling so stressed and angry but have decided to channel that into kicking my fat to the curb. I've also had a word with myself and decided to stop wallowing in all the crap that's going on and focus on the things I can control.
I was told to weigh twice a week by the dietician but have decided it's bringing me down so back to once a week.

A massive well done on the losses!

NarcsBegone · 13/02/2017 16:47

I've just had a delivery from my friend who is a bit of a 'feeder' and totally does not understand what a diet is Confused
I've nibbled the edge put it out of sight

10 stones, 140 lbs, a whole bloody person to lose!! Anyone else?
Lotsawobblybits · 13/02/2017 17:18

Narcs that made me laugh - does look amazing though!

fleuricle · 13/02/2017 17:35

Can I join in pls?
My heaviest was 19.10
currently 18.7
aiming for: around 10-11st.

I had two really difficult emotional periods where I put on around 4 st each time. Food is how I have coped but I am 50 next year and it is catching up with me. I want to be much healthier for that b'day, so that gives me 11 months to try to lose, say, 5st (more if poss).

I've been 9st which was a size 8 as I am 5'8.
I thought I was fat Sad

so, I am really NOT good at judging my own body size / appetitite etc

OrlandaFuriosa · 13/02/2017 22:58

Ok, so I started off today determined to do better and indeed I had until 40 mins ago. But I have only because I did huge amounts if exercise. And it's gone completely out of the windiw just now. It's not a good reason nor an excuse, but

Setting off for the gym, a car knocked down a girl in front of me who stepped out in front of it on her phone. She's ok but both were shaky. I had to mop them up and tell term what their duties were, I then left them to it.

Just now there was a huge bang. A car parked in front of our house lost control and took off a chunk of our neighbour's car, skedaddled leaving glass, bits of bumper and I think the wheel housing and axle in bad state, neighbours including ten year old in shock. I swept up, got them to take photos, email the insurance.

But the combination left both me and DS, who had come to get me, shaky.

So guess what, I've just eaten a huge amount of ice cream, huge. But I don't care. Tomorrow is another day. And I've proved I can do that amount if exercise and at a higher level than before.

Here is to a calm and placid tomorrow.

NarcsBegone · 13/02/2017 23:15

Bloody hell orlanda I think you have totally earned the ice cream with all that going on. You're obviously good to have around in a crisis!

OrlandaFuriosa · 14/02/2017 01:56

Narcs, thanks so much for being understanding, eyes have just filled a bit. It's been quite a day and trying to protect DS a little too as well as provide support.

I do need to learn not to eat my feelings.

Separately, anyone got recommendation for a sports bra? I hate sports direct and in any case I need the sort of engineering that is used on the Forth Bridge. Can't afford Rigby and Peller and in any case size will, I hope change. But right breast painful and leaking which can occur with exercise. Checking out at doctors this week but in the meantime...

Flibbertyjibbit · 14/02/2017 10:34

I've gained 3lbs back Sad - have not been as strict this last week but did opt for chicken salad when eating out over weekend but probably a few too many raspberries and not enough water drunk. Sad because I thought I would at least maintain not gain it back. Can I blame time of the month or is that a really lame excuse?

That sounds like a really stressful day Orlanda, hope both you & DS are doing ok today.

KOKO everyone, we can do this. if i say it enough times it might sink in

OhHolyFuck · 14/02/2017 10:43

Christ orlando, hell of a day already, thank god you were around
Right, deep breath, it's done now so move on from it, tiny blip but it's not going to effect the rest of the week

flibberty you can totally blame totm for some of it! I've not got periods back yet (stopped depo injection in December and they've not restarted yet) but I'm sure water retention is at least 1/2lb
Koko, it'll come off eventually

Lotsawobblybits · 14/02/2017 10:44

Orlanda One of those things happening is traumatic enough let alone both- never mind ice cream I would be downing a bottle of gin! Be kind to yourself & I hope today is less eventful.

In terms of Sports Bra- I have had a couple of these M&S ones which have been okay -washed well.

OrlandaFuriosa · 14/02/2017 23:36

Thanks, everyone.

Today was stressful too as consultant and senior nurse told me it would take prob another four years before I recover from radio, and that my other symptoms are not radio related but almost certainly ME..

So now foradvice , please, from you lovely ME sufferers....

and I shall cheer myself up with a sports bra, having basically eaten my weight today.

Tomorrow...and tomorrow and tomorrow..

OhHolyFuck · 15/02/2017 00:27

Have you read spoons theory orlando?

OrlandaFuriosa · 15/02/2017 00:31

Yup. .

It's how I operate at the moment.

NarcsBegone · 15/02/2017 00:38

Orlanda I'm really sorry to hear you have a diagnosis of ME. I get a lot of support from my local group and it's made the world of difference having people who understand what's going on. The biggest piece of advice I want to give you is that you must rest as much as possible! I cannot stress how important it is especially early on, it can mean that symptoms will be shorter lasting and ease sooner. There are people who completely recover from ME and there seems to be a pattern of 6 months, 2 years, 5 years and 7 years from first symptoms according to a course thing I did. My ME was from having glandular fever but instead of resting I carried on working and then tried very hard to fight it and became more and more ill by doing that. I was bed bound for only a year. There should be a me/Cfs service in your area (drs should refer) and that's helpful for understanding and offers cbt. The only current treatment for ME is Cbt, graded exercise therapy and pacing, the graded exercise therapy has recently come under a lot of fire and has been shown to have a negative effect. They often also have a pain management bod there too which is helpful and if you can't find this service in your area then your dr can still refer to pain management. It's also worth seeing a rheumatologist.
There is finally being some decent research done in the U.K. There are investigations being done as we speak on some drugs that it's believed can dramatically reduce symptoms and enhance quality of life. There has been a very very interesting study done that shows that people with ME have an enzyme that is buggered and so the body doesn't break down carbs properly and just basically fucks with everything, it also means we produce excessive amounts of lactate which is what muscle produces when exercising and explains why I get this awful burning in my muscles when doing anything basically. These two articles explain it:
kavlifondet.no/2016/12/new-study-on-pathological-mechanisms-in-me-from-bergen-research-group/
This one explains it in an easier way
www.newscientist.com/article/2121162-metabolic-switch-may-bring-on-chronic-fatigue-syndrome/
There are some ME associations you can look up: action for ME and the me action network which may be helpful.
I've only had ME around 7 years and in that time it's changed in how it affects me and some symptoms can be worse than others at different times. I find stress, emotional stuff, too many things on my mind and anything complicated tires me as much as physical things do.
If I can help with understanding anything or give more info on things then give me a shout
I'm suffering massive brain fog today and for the life of me can't remember the name of my sports bra and the label has rubbed off but yes treat yourself to a sports bra!!! Mine is so comfy I wear it all the time! If I remember the name I'll post.
