10stonestolose · 03/01/2017 12:18

Age:45
Starting weight: 19st 10lbs on 01/01/17
Goal: 9st 10lbs
Plan: low carb, high fat

Well, it's the biggest I've ever been. Feel horrid, but determined to make this the last year of being a fat person. I''m going to diet the shit out of this mess I'm in! I've see threads to lose 100lbs, but not 140. If anyone else is in the same scary boat and fancies friendly, non-judgmental journey sharing, please say hello and share away.

May I ask embarrassing questions, please?

I have an event to go to so am wanting to increase the rate of weight loss a little. I've been reducing obvious carbs, save for binges, i.e. bread, rice, pasta and potatoes.

If I go lower carb, I have the following concerns:

Fibre. Pulses and root veg eg carrots and porridge keep me regular, as well as green veg. What impact does taking them out have ?

The idea of eating more high fat. I understand that re protein eg in cheese, but really? Hugely calorific, cholesterol?

Why is cream better than milk?

And what about calcium?

And does it work?
Grateful for advice.

NarcsBegone · 09/02/2017 08:58

Orlando I found this article which explains it a little:
www.ditchthecarbs.com/why/why-high-fat/
I'm on the phone app so the link might not work.

Flibbertyjibbit · 09/02/2017 10:17

Orlando I'm finding low carb keeps my snacking at bay as it supresses appetite. The initial 10 days were hard with headache and cravings but once through the other side it is ok.

I have found the diet doctor to have useful information about low carb.

I would say porridge is not allowed on low carb, but I have the odd carrot now and then as part of a lower carb meal.

I'm following the low carb bootcamp rules, there is a thread running in low carb if you want to ask for more information there.

In pieces today, really want to carry on my pt sessions but I've been a write off all day, even the school runs have left me in tears...this work better show up on the scales!

Lotsawobblybits · 09/02/2017 16:22

Yay Fairfax way to go!

That sounds really tough Holy, maybe had a word with your PT trainer and see if they can tailor it more to you. You will feel great with a good loss though.

Well done Harder 9lbs total is good going.

Pinot Anything savory like wotisits are hard to resist, I started buying quavers thinking they were a better choice but just ended up eating packet after packet. You are correct about food as a reward it is a really hard habit to break.

Welcome Malmsey, we are all in it together!

Orlanda I was wondering the same things TBH, glad you asked. It seems counter intuitive, the links have been really interesting.

10stones your auto correct is right for me it is a 'brace' yourself for swimming Smile

Feeling grumpy today, stressy work week with quite a bit on. I know this is a trigger point for biscuit eating. Have also done a mid week weigh in this morning and I weigh exactly the same as Monday. Which in my head I know I shouldn't worry about- but my gut is saying 'all that effort for nothing'- even though my head says it is worth it in the long run

Keep it up everyone.

GatoradeMeBitch · 09/02/2017 17:05

Bizarrely I ate 'perfectly' for two days and lost nothing. Then I had a 'sod it' moment yesterday and ate two shortcake cookies. According to the scales I lost a pound and a half overnight. WTF?!

OhHolyFuck · 09/02/2017 17:11

lotsa the only tailoring I could do is if I could do it in bed! It's ME so doing anything leaves me a waste of space

Lotsawobblybits · 09/02/2017 17:26

Holy Sorry to hear that and I hope you are feeling better this afternoon. Flowers

OrlandaFuriosa · 10/02/2017 07:39

Thank you for the links.

I've wondered about the lcb but don't think it's practical in my household. Nor longer term do I want to do it at that level, I think, but instead find a new way of eating for ever, not just while I lose weight. That's not to say I don't support those who do, I admire your will power and envy your losses.

What I do notice, now and thanks to MyFitnessPal, is what proportion of my diet is carbs, far too much. and a huge proportion of that is milk, in tea , coffee etc. So I need to find a source of calcium that isn't lactose rich.

But I've now taken off those pesky 2lbs I put back on, so am feeling more cheerful again.

I can do it.. And so can and will everyone on here.

OhHolyFuck · 10/02/2017 08:59

Message for today - koko everyone!

10 stones, 140 lbs, a whole bloody person to lose!! Anyone else?
Flibbertyjibbit · 10/02/2017 10:44

Orlando my mum is not able to have dairy and uses unsweetened almond milk in coffee/tea. Its a lot lower on the carb count than milk. Or i'm having double cream in my coffee and drinking tea black with splash of cold water.

I'm hoping low carb will help me lose weight then my maintainance plan is do mon-fri lowish carb and not worry at all on weekends eat anything & everything

Holy hope you're feeling bit better today. I have an autoimmune condition which includes chronic fatigue. I'm rubbish at pacing myself and often end up stuck in bed when I over do it payback sucks

OrlandaFuriosa · 10/02/2017 15:39

That's really helpful. What does she do for calcium?

PinotAndPlaydough · 10/02/2017 16:10

I've messed up really badly today and yesterday Sad I had a load of toffee that my husband bought home as well as some chocolate cake things and then today baked cookies with the kids and ate 4, also had toast for lunch today and a pack of those bastard addictive wotsits. Once I have a bit of sugar it is like I just can't stop.

OrlandaFuriosa · 10/02/2017 16:18

Pinot, last week was a shocker for me, almost a whole week, not just two days.

So, you and I have to pick ourselves up, look at broccoli with longing, desire and hunger, and decide that life starts again now or perhaps tomorrow morning...

Am with you...

FairfaxAikman · 10/02/2017 16:59

Today's stair climb was a few tenths of a second slower than yesterday. Still 1.14 though

Flibbertyjibbit · 10/02/2017 17:07

The alpro almond milk has calcium included so I don't think she is having anything extra.

NarcsBegone · 10/02/2017 22:27

Hi all,
I've tried almond milk and soya milk and I just can't stand it. I use skimmed milk but it's still high in carbs but it's the only luxury I allow myself.
I'm really not losing the weight Sadafter the popcorn mess up I adjusted for the next couple of days and ended up putting on 2lbs. I've been super strict since then and it's not shifting. I almost gave in and thought well it's just not working so why bother but have stuck with so far. I really don't get what im doing so wrong... I understand that a bag of popcorn is bad but 2lbs bad??? Even with being so strict the following days?! Yesterday I weighed exactly the same.
My cold I had is apparently not a cold but a virus which has come back with a vengeance, it's been weeks now. I'm so stressed about this court thing and feeling generally miserable so all in all I'm not feeling good. The one really good thing is that although I still get the urge to eat sweet stuff when emotional I seem to be able to override it a little this time, possibly because I just don't want the feeling of regret it adds.
I need to go food shopping tomorrow to keep myself on track.
I hope everyone has a good weekend and great losses.

OrlandaFuriosa · 11/02/2017 00:00

Narcs, sympathy. Time of the month? Water retention?

Don't give up, you're doing really well. And weight loss isn't as easy as some diets would have us believe. Flowers

I've been reading about the blood sugar first. Anyone done it? My worries are is that it doesn't address my reasons for eating and i wouldn't be able to stick to it.

FairfaxAikman · 11/02/2017 09:06

2lb off and into the next stone bracket.

MalmseyWhine · 11/02/2017 09:38

Orlando there's a thread about the blood sugar diet on the 5:2 board.

Fairfax well done Smile

Narcs sympathies Sad. Be kind to yourself if you are feeling poorly.

MalmseyWhine · 11/02/2017 10:07

First 5 Goals

  1. Drop into next stone bracket
  2. Reduce BMI to below 40
  3. Increase movement. Minimum 10k steps per day at least 5 days a week between now and end of Feb.
  4. Lose minimum of 10lbs by April 17th
  5. Fit into lady's uniform blouse when I start new job in April rather than men's shirt.
GatoradeMeBitch · 11/02/2017 11:24

Narc, try only weighing yourself once a week. Daily weighing drives me crazy, even though I know there are all kinds of things that can affect it.

I just had crumpets for breakfast, lovely! I was shocked when I found out their fat content is under 0.5 grams. I think I'll have those every weekend from now on.

My first goal is to get back to my previous heaviest weight - 238lbs. Finding out that I'd gone over 250 was a shock. So far I've lost 14 pounds, from 256 to 241.8. I'm already finding that my favourite pair of jeans are a bit loose around the waist, I keep having to pull them up!

10stonestolose · 11/02/2017 13:50

Flibberty....oh yes the self appointed diet experts, 'low carb is unhealthy blah blah blah'. Well I've found something that works for me so do bore off...well that's what I'd say if I was braver! But I just say I had a well woman check a couple of years ago after low-carbing for 10 months and I was in rude health: cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, hormones, all perfect. Whereas my low fat, low sugar friend of the same age has to take statins everyday. Ooh the brownies sound lovely, but I would also struggle to stop at one.

Pinot...3lbs off and getting into the 16s is fantastic, well done! I feel your pain on the wotsits too. Rewarding yourself with food is a hard habit to break, but it's so worth it when you're getting those kind of results. Sounds like yesterday was a tough day. I hope one day we can echo Kate Moss with "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" when we've cracked this thing.

Harder...good on you for getting back on it and 2.5lbs off is a great start. 9lbs off is still 9lbs less than you were and only another 5lbs to your first stone. Sometimes you've just got to do what feels right for you. So if you just use SW as a guide, you can tweak it to suit you. Giving up bingeing is one of the hardest things.

Fairfax...congrats on the new stair time, you've knocked almost half a minute off! And we'll done on the 2lbs off, bet it feels great getting down to the next stone bracket, I hope to do that this week.

Orlanda...I think staying regular is one of the harder parts of low carbing, but as long as you drink lots and lots of water and up your green veg intake, you should be fine. Apologies if TMI, but I've found I go slightly less often, but get rid of more when I go. So instead of 1-2 times a day, it's 1-2 times in two days. Having said that, I imagine everyone is different. I did have diarrhoea quite a bit in the first 10 days too, bit it always takes a week or two to settle down and for my body to get used to the shock. You won't really be able to have the porridge and pulses, but just eat lots of non-root veg. I also have the odd carrot, but keep to v low amounts of anything rooty. It definitely works, as your body has to burn fat for its fuel instead of using the carbs first. Cream contains less lactose than milk, which is a natural sugar, so it's better if you're low carbing. I have my drinks black anyway, so that part hasn't been to difficult for me. Calcium, there's plenty in the cheese and cream and also in veg like broccoli. The reason I find it the best way of eating for me is because it really gets rid of most of my sugar cravings. Some people use sugar alternatives like Splenda, but I don't because I am a sugar addict and I think cold turkey is the only way for me. I've read that the brain and body have a similar response to it as real sugar, so insulin is still released as if you'd eaten normal sugar for instance. Diabetes is one of the things I worry about when I'm eating lots of carbs so, I think for me, it's best to abstain completely. Well done on getting those 2lbs back off!

Holy...you've done so well exercising with your condition, you are an inspiration. It shouldn't be so hard that it destroys you though, can you try to take it a little easier on yourself? I know it's a difficult balance as you also want to see results. I love your snail meme, forward is forward should be our catchphrase!

Wobbly...sorry you've had a tough week, it's good that you're recognising your triggers though and not reaching for the biscuits for comfort. In reality they only make you feel better for a few seconds and then far shittier than before. I get really frustrated too when I hop on the scales and I feel loads slimmer, but they're the same. It will come off if we keep going and we just have to KOKO. Good that we can come on here for a whinge, at least we all understand how it feels. You are doing so well, but you have my impatient gene. As holy would say, forward is forward.

Gator..well done on on 1 1/2lbs off...despite the cookies Shock. I bet the loose jeans feel lovely, you'll have to treat yourself, or do you already have smaller ones in the wardrobe? Brilliant that you have your first stone off. I'm yet to get under the 250lbs, but should in next week or two.

Narcs...it's horrid when you're being really good and it doesn't come off. I would echo Orlanda, with could TOTM be approaching? My weight loss really slowed down then. Or it could just be your body adjusting and you'll have a great week next week. Just try to stay away from any comfort eating and I promise it will show on the scales soon.

Malmsey...you've got some great goals there. They should keep you busy for a bit. The BMI thing is a good one, because there are lots of categories to get through before we get below the magic 25.

I've had an ok week, still not really doing what I should with exercise though. I just feel a bit tired and lethargic all the time at the mo and can't face anything but the walking. I'm hoping I'll be more motivated when I've lost a bit more. I'm out with the girls tonight, so hoping I don't undo my hard work this week when I get on the scales tomorrow. On plan with eating, but I'm definitely in the mood for a few proseccos or vodka slimline tonics. Chin chin! Have a good weekend everyone and remember.....Forward is forward!

10stones Yep, I have clothes in size 24, 22, 20, 18 and 16 Grin

Not through yo-yo dieting, just not getting rid of my smaller clothes when I outgrew them. My bedroom is stuffed!

Have a great night out!
