Hello!

I am officially a real 'exercise buddy' again! Managed a 1.5 mile run on Sunday morning. And my ankle was fine. The rest of me was shot though . Can't beleive how much fitness I lost over 6 weeks. But things will improve.

Have also almost made up my mind to give up karate. I went last night for the first time. I managed to remember the kata I learnt last time but the chap who was helping me out just picked holes in everything I did. And I felt so stupid and useless. I am 42, and I have enough things in my life that I have to do that I dont enjoy without making more chores for myself ifswim. Also I watched some more experienced karateka doing 'grappling practise' which looked more like judo - and I just wondered when in my life I would ever ever enjoy rolling around on the floor with a total stranger, getting sweaty and dusty, scratched and punched in a voluminous white suit. Call me fussy.... Not sure what I want to acheive with it any more. And those that so acheive success seem to start as tiny little people. So ....would I be a total wuss to give it up now?

speedymama · 29/05/2007 09:05

Hi Ormrian, glad you are back!

Well done on your run. The fact that you managed to 1.5miles after a 6 week lay off is a tremendous achievement and you will find your fitness will return quickly because of your residual fitness.

Sorry to hear about the Karate. Sounds like you lack confidence in your ability. How about having a word with the sensei and let him know about your fustrations? FWIW, DH and I would like our 3yo DTS to take up Karate or Kung Fu when they are older and we will do it with them. I'm 42yo now so by the time they start I'll probably be 45yo. I have done Karate and Kung Fu before so I understand completely your fustrations with learning new katas and sparring. I managed to get to purple/white belt with Shotokan Karate and I got a brown belt with Kung Fu. I was training for my black belt (15 years ago) when I had to leave the area for my new job.

If you find that you dread going however, then you will not enjoy it but have a word with the sensei first.

JenT · 29/05/2007 09:08

I would like to join the exercise buddies, I am a new girl here how does it work and what should I do (aside from exercise of course!!)

thanks

speedymama · 29/05/2007 09:11

I managed to do a 3 mile run on Saturday and yesterday I did the Power of 3 work out wth Davina so that made up for my over-indulgence at the weekend.

Hope you all enjoyed the bank holiday, despite the weather

OrmIrian · 29/05/2007 09:14

Thanks speedymama.

My DS#1 has been doing karate for a few years now and is starting to do well (just got a green belt in wado ryu). I think we started him too young as the first few years he simply couldn't concentrate enough. Problem is with this club is that it really does seem to be geared up to junior beginners and I feel like a total nuisance . I'd feel better if I was in a class of adult beginners. Sensei is a nice enough chap but not terribly approachable - he did warn me that I might find it hard to start with in the circumstances but still got impatient with me several times which annoyed me as I was paying for the priviledge of being humiliated.... I feel as if all the younget black belts who compete regularly are the focus of his attention.

speedymama · 29/05/2007 09:15

Hi JenT. Welcome to our friendly group. Basically we just report in when we have done some exercise plus we motivate each other and give advice/tips.

Lorns is our resident fitness expert and Laloop is her second in command who keeps us all on our toes.

So just join in, tell us about yourself, what exercising you are doing, what you are aiming for if you have any objectives such as losing weight etc and join in the general banter.

OrmIrian · 29/05/2007 09:16

Hi Jent!

speedymama · 29/05/2007 09:22

Oh Ormrian, that Sensei would irritate me too. I left a Karate club (Zen shin) because of sensei like that. I did not see why I should pay someone to speak to me like an idiot.

In my Shotakan karate class, the sensei started dating one of the students and all his attention focused on her and the rest of us felt really put out that we were not receiving the same level of attention. Consequently, many of us dropped out and that is why I did not get further than purple/white belt.

You may be better of going somewhere that is geared to adult beginners and with a sensei who understands that students learn at different rates.

Good luck!

OrmIrian · 29/05/2007 09:40

Maybe. Sensei is married (recently) to one of the students...... and best mates or related to loads of the others. But that is the nature of this town TBH. Everyone is related to one half, and feuding with the other

PeckaRolloverAgain · 29/05/2007 09:43

Hi everyone

I havent been on here for AGES!!

I am now 10 weeks pregnant

This pregnancy has been a bit of a worry so far, Im very anxious after my miscarriage at christmas and have had a couple of bleeds.

Do you think I could do some exercise?

I havent been in the gym for ages but was thinking maybe just some walking on the treadmill and light weights?

What do you think?

Hideehi · 29/05/2007 09:52

PRA - i wouldn't, you'd never forgive yourself if something went wrong, i reckon just carrying out your daily life is enough excercise whilst pregnant.

AbRoller · 29/05/2007 10:00

hi, I'd really like to join. I posted a quick thread yesterday eve hoping for some moral support and motivation to get me back into the swing of things - I didn't realise this thread was here.

A little bit about me - I'm 13st 7lbs having lost a good bit at the gym but with other commitments I had to knock that on the head so I've bought home equipment but I'm at a standstill now with my weight - no loss/no gain. I'm doing a bike warm-up, 18minute mile brisk walk and 8 minutes cross trainer EVERY DAY and nothing is shifting

Can anyone offer advice - what am I doing wrong?

I'm due to be bridesmaid in august and must fit into a dress thats already been bought in a SIZE 16! - please help

PeckaRolloverAgain · 29/05/2007 10:10

Hideehi, your right but Im getting so fat already!!!

laloop · 29/05/2007 10:55

Hi everyone
Hope you all had a nice Bank holiday weekend. My sis was back home for the weekend (she lives in Denmark) so we have been enjoying ourselves going out to pub, Indian meal, fish and chips etc (help!!!) so I have to be very good now to balance out a heavy weekend.

Welcome back OrMirian. Glad to hear your ankle's better, 1.5 miles is a very respectable first run out after an injury so well done. You'll be upping the distance again in no time.

Pecka - congratulations, that's lovely news. Maybe gentle walking or swimming for enjoyment rather than over-exerting yourself?

Hi speedy, good for you keeping up the running routine - I'm going for a 3 mile run tomorrow and haven't been out for ages due to ds2 being ill. He is only just getting back to normal, I'm hoping I'll be able to put him into gym creche this week and get back into a routine again. I'll let you know how I get on - will be thinking of you all when I'm struggling - will help keep me motivated

Welcome JenT and Abroller - great to have you here.
Abroller - maybe you could consider interval training on your treadmill/exercise bike. Really push yourself every few minutes up to a faster speed for a short burst of a minute or so (even 30 secs to begin with) - I think this is meant to be good for fat burning. BTW, we do a weigh-in on here on a Tuesday morning (Sweetheart and I were both trying to lose a few lbs). It's on a Tuesday morning although Sweetheart is on her hols and I'm going to avoid the scales this week after my weekend of over-indulgence. But if you want, you could weigh today and then post weight-change next Tues morning alongwith us.

Hope you're all having a nice day. I'm going to stick ds2 in his buggy now and walk to the supermarket for a few groceries (about an hour there and back), was tempted to take the car but after catching up with our thread I'm feeling I should go for it! Taking the dc's swimming this afternoon, I won't be able to get any swimming done myself as I'll be splashing about with ds2 in the kid's pool. But getting the three of them changed etc counts as a workout in itself, I reckon.

Catch up with you all later

AbRoller · 29/05/2007 11:10

hi Laloop, tnx for the advice, will give it a go. Just hurt the scales again - still 13st7lbs but I'll pick up the pace and hope to report some loss next tuesday. take care

3andnomore · 29/05/2007 11:19

HI there...well...since my dh and my mum have been here I been completely rubbish, lol...still done some Juicing, but also eaten far to much rubbish and adfter 5 weeks of staying away of alcohol, I have had a bit to much to drink most nights (Bad influence the lot of them, lol)
Obviously the alcohol thne has a knock on effect on my exercising...have been so rubbish this past week...but, will get back into it again...I have got to....otherwise I will be back where I started, and don't want that!
Did on Saturday Nell McAndrews, and really enjoyed it and was rather proud that I could do teh resistence training part of it now with my 2Ibs weights....before I only ever got halfway through it before having to change to lighter weights...!
It's crazy though how quickly one can loose focus

Orm...your town sounds like Corby, it's the same here, i.e. either they are related or enemies...lol...

Pecka, if you haven't done any exercise since falling pg, I think I would not do anyhting other then walking or cycling and of course swimming is fabulous. If you could maybe somehting like antenatal yoga classes or aquanatal, things meant for pg women....but anything where you could possibly pull a muscle etc...I'd stay away from.
I had mc's before and they do really effect you when you are pg again, you just worry so much more.

AbRoller, I think your best bet might be to vary your exercise more, and do more on some days and as much as you do know on others, etc....! Oh, and I am member of WW and the leader there said to one of the girls that had plateaued for a fair few weeks that maybe if she changes her Breakfast to a protein one she might get out of the plateau that way...something to do with protein getting the metabolism going in the morning...and it worked for that girl, she had eggs one way or another most mornigns, etc...rather then her usual cereal!

AbRoller · 29/05/2007 12:19

Thanks 3andnomore, I'll give that a go also. Had been a WW member but couldn't keep up with the meetings for the same reason I couldn't commit to the gym, I am however counting points and have bought a brill WW recipe book - it was a must as I'm not very imaginative when it comes to cooking and was finding porridge and salad sickening by week 3 [bleugh!!!]

Whilst I'm sticking to the points I think carbs are my downfall, can't get enough of them, seem to always feel bloated after them whether it be rice, pasta, tato's or the big baddie - bread! SO off to the shop now to buy eggs.

chat later

3andnomore · 29/05/2007 12:24

When I am on the waggon I follow the Juicemasters (Jason Vales) philosophie! Real eyeopener....have most of his Books, but if you only ever want to get one book Slim4Life is the one!
Oh, exercise wise, I culd not commit to a gym, or even running(not even jsut because I don't like it, lol) but I do exercise Dvd's and those are brill...Tae BO/Davina/Nell McAndrews are my favourites

3andnomore · 29/05/2007 12:26

OH, that might have been confusing now, lol...I still go to WW group, because I like teh support, etc...but my eating plan usually is the Juicemaster way, but it sort of ties in wiht WW core plan

laloop · 29/05/2007 13:34

Back from my walk and feeling more virtuous now. I love the Davina DVD too, 3andnomore Must have a look on Amazon for the TaeBo one as it's been recommended a few times on here.

Going to have avocado, tomato and mozzarella salad for lunch, trying to go easy on the carbs again. Stirfry for tea tonight. Loads of water. Hoping this will get me back on track.

JenT · 29/05/2007 14:40

thanks for your warm welcome,

I have 2 little boys and alot of wobble!!
I seem to loose weight whilst pregnant as it appears to raise my metabolism but as soon as baby is out and about I put it back on again but wobblier, so my son was born in September and I had lost 3 stone from conception to delivery. September 2006 was 10st4 and size 12 bottom and 16 boobs but now am 11st3 and size 14 bottom and size 16 boobs,
I walk DS1 to nursery each day (1 mile each way) with the baby in the buggy and DS1 on the buggy board, but I don't seem to have the energy to do much more..
I am going to try to get out in the evening to do an exercise class but am not sure if once a week will make any difference at all.
Tips for helping with tiredness and wobble greatfully recieved.. (baby still waking twice at night to be breastfed!)

Jen x

3andnomore · 29/05/2007 14:46

ON the Tae BO ones, I did get teh Ultimate collection quite cheaply of Amazon, so, it doesn't matter that 2 workouts are actually the same ones with different title...(the active and energize workouts are the same)...saying that....actually seeing that tehy are identical, you might would like one of them and then you know if Tae BO is for you? Would be without the cover though (am sure I have a neutral cover to put it in)...if you would be interested let me know....would not want much for it, and mainly to cover p&p really!

Davina is brilliant, isn't she...I got the Power of 3, which I love, and the three 30 minutes workout, where I love the pump and the chore...not that keen on the cardio box...but can't have it all

Am trying to get a few more DVD's at the mo...have plenty already, but some I don't really like, and somer aren't quite as challenging and need the variety, lol!

speedymama · 29/05/2007 15:05

I was sorting out my exercise collection yesterday and nearly fainted when I realised that I had 24 DVD's and videos. I had already given half a dozen videos to the charity shop.

Laloop, my favourtie Tae Bo is "Everybody Get Ripped". The sections include training, basic workout, advance workout and 8 minute workout. I tend to do the Advance workout but when I'm short of time, I'll the 8 minute workout.

laloop · 29/05/2007 15:31

Hi again
Thanks for offer of DVD, 3andnomore - can't take it up unfortunately as I was quick off the mark earlier and I've already been on Amazon and ordered the Ultimate Collection. Maybe someone else on here might want it to give it a try though?

Speedy, I got totally confused about which one to get! I hadn't even heard of Taebo except on this thread. When I went onto Amazon, there were loads of different ones. Couldn't decide what to get so just went for the Ultimate collection in the end, as it seemed like good value. Will give this a try and then look for the "Everybody get Ripped" one if I like it.

JenT, it's hard to find the energy with a baby and small child, so little and often is maybe the best option. Could you fit in another walk mid-morning while ds1 is at nursery or maybe do an exercise dvd a couple of times per week? I remember finding it really difficult to lose weight when I was breastfeeding so I know how you feel. I think I put a little weight on rather than off at that time too as I'd stayed relatively neat during the pregnancies. Another suggestion would be the Weightwatchers plan - it's suitable while breastfeeding as the daily points allowance is adjusted so that you can eat a little bit more.

speedymama · 29/05/2007 15:50

The Ultimate collection contains
Tae-Bo - Abs And Glutes.

Tae-Bo Active.

Get Ripped.

TaeBo Energise.

I have the all of those except TaeBo Active so you won't need to get "Everybody get ripped".

You're going to lurrve Abs and Glutes workout. Burn baby burn
