Hi this a new thread linked to "We want to lose 10lbs NEW THREAD"

I'm a Group exercise instructor/Personal Trainer and have been offering advice to mumsnetters!

Following suggestions that it would be good to start an exercise/nutrition advice/motivation thread - well here it is!!

Yoyo - welcome an Hi! Ditto Laloop for trainers. I wear these or New Balance all the time. A small sports shop - not JJB etc. should be able to give you better advice, or order in a pair if need be.

I wear orthotics as I have 1 flat foot and 1 that pronates a bit, so I need a neutral trainer. On any trainer if you look along the central inner part of each trainer (the arch)you will find a grey shaded area. This signifies that it has arch support, which is great if you need support, but not if you already wear orthotics. I have to wear a pair that has no shaded area!!

Hi Yo Yo

I bought my trainers from a specialist runners shop and they said that I needed motion control trainers because of my flat feet. Prior to wearing these, I use to get pain all the time but this does not happen now that I wear the correct footwear.

I would definitely recommend you going to specialist running shop.

wondering what to do today - any ideas.

I can squeeze in a gym visit today. i usually go tomorrow but I have a netball match tomorrow evening so what should I do? Go and do an extra visit today (5k run) and then do my normal cardio and weights session tomorrow OR make today my cardio and weights session and do no gym visit tomorrow as I have the match?????

yoyo · 22/05/2007 13:09

Thanks for the welcome everyone and the advice re: trainers. I will be in London a few times at half term so will try and find a specialist shop. Mine are rather worn out and although I have not had any problems yet they badly need replacing.

Today I will be going to the gym and aiming to do my run 4 mins, walk 2mins X5 - couldn't do it yesterday and only did 3 min runs on last two. Have already done a Pilates class so feeling okay.

3andnomore · 22/05/2007 13:36

HI All,
may I join?
I have started with the Juicemasters way of life (do still go to my WW group, though, lol)and exercise is a huge part of my life now.
I do something twice a day now, and are aiming for between 1-2 hours a day. And it rarely is only 1 hour...more 1 1/2-2 hours now.
I do mainly Dvd's, several Tae Bo Workouts, Davina's Power of 3 and Her 3 30 minute workouts and Nell Mc'Andrews Ultimate challenge and Maximum Impact workouts are my mainones, but have also got Jade's shape change one and Beverly Callards rapid results, and am planning on getting some more.
I am amased at just how quick my Fitness levels have improved and howmy shape has changed. I also feel so much better for it all and have started to really look forward to my exercise.
Sometimes, especially if I don't get to do anything until lateish and I want to watch somehting on TV, I just freestyle and do my own routine ala Davina's...and I now really push myself evne when doing that, which is good.

Just wondering if anyone knows (not that it really is that important, lol) if it really is the best to do your exercises with those cardio intervcals or if it is just as good to do a longer cardio interval and then your toning and stretching and resistence training?

Eating wise, I do a lot of Juicing, always Juice/Smoothie for Breakfast and mostly for Lunch aswell and a healthy dinner...mostly protein ones with lots of salad or veggies....and Snacking wise I try to opt for fruit, and am actually pretty much sticking to it!

Oh, we recently got a 14ft trampoline for the garden, which will hopefully go up this week...I can't wait...because I always used to lvoe Gymnastics and things...mainly bought it for me really...not teh Kids, lol....

sweetheart · 22/05/2007 14:49

yoyo - your doing really well with the running, keep it up and you'll be running 20 odd minutes in no time

3 anm - hello, I remember you from one of the other diet threads on here. I sort of dropped out as it was a bit extreame for me - I like my food too much to replace it with a juice I'm affraid but well done to you for sticking with it. Your excercise regime sounds punishing too! you must be super fit!

Well I did my cardio and weights workout and have decided if I'm feeling extra energetic tomorrow I can go and do the 5k run. I really pushed myself with the cardio today though - I managed 3k in 18 mins which if I can keep up the pace means I'll do 5k in 30mins which is my goal Did a 20 min run and managed nearly 3.5k (even got up to 11km/Hr for 5 mins on the treadmill) Can I hear you all say woooooooooo!!!!!

Lorns · 22/05/2007 15:33

Well done sweetheart. If you want energy and alota bounce for tomorrow - maybe no extra exercise or just a little as you want to conserce your energy and ensure your muscles get recovery

Yoyo - there is a great running shop in London. Here are a few www.jogshopdocklands.co.uk, Run and become 42 Palmer Street, Westminster, London, SW1H 0PH, Runners Need 34 Parkway
Camden, London, NW1 7AH. The first one sounds good as it does gait analysis!

Hi 3andnomore. It does seem you do alot of exercise! Glad you're getting results. It is good to do interval training as part of an exercise regime - working harder and then slower for a period of time. Exercising x2 a day is really for athletes! Doing 1-2 hours or less (dependant on your fitness) is enough. If you're still feeling that you want to do more at the end of 2 hours, then maybe the workouts you are doing are not challenging enough for you. You should feel "nicely" tired and want so rest days!

On the diet from - lonterm it is good to have some carbs (not just from fruit) in your diet to ensure you are supplying the muscles with all the energy they need!

3andnomore · 22/05/2007 16:59

Bugger, just typed a long message and lost it, grrr...lol!

LOl Sweetheart...see running is somehting I really don't do....never liked it, and I suppsoe probably never will...I couldn't run 1 km, I think, never mind 5...so, wow to you!
Oh,and just Juice really was just for that first week of detox, not a permanent thing. I like my food to much, too I often jsut find it's easier for me to grab a Juice aswell at Lunch as I cna prepare it in the morning, especially now that I have my masticating Juicer, that keeps the nutrients etc...longer alive, so to say!
Lorns, I am not doing low carbing, I still do have carbs, but I try to have carbs in teh day and I try to make them mainly rice and some pasta, but rarely bread, as it gives me headachs (wheat that is)...also often have something with sweet potatoe for dinner, as that seems to be fine...but carbs do bloat me to easily and I can't seem to do exercise as well in the evenings then.
OH, and I think I have written it a bit confusing in my last post...but the maximum exercise I do a day is 2 hours...so, I may do 1 hour in the morning and 1 in the evening, etc...I am not completely mad, yet....but msut admit, that I don't really get the feeling anymore where I don't want to do exercise (as I have in the past)!
Jason Vale sort of makes a point in one of his books, where he says, that of course doing anyhting is better then nohting, but when you look at the big picture of how many hours there are in a week, really the often claimed 3 hours a week tis great really doesn't cut it...I mean there is somewhat over 160h in a week...so, 3...hm...especially considering how easy people often find time to do other things, like watching TV!
So, the interval as in Davinas Workout is the way to go then (they do a warm up, and then the different target areas, with resistence weight training and abs and buns and so on, and thye always do a few 1minute intervals every couple of exercises.
Whreas in Nell McAndrews workout there is like a warm up a pretty punishing 40 minute mostly high intensity cardio and then some resistence, etc....well...lets just say, if I can do her dvd's easily wihtout getting to much out of puff and holding all those punishing squads, then I know I have reached my peak level of fitness....!
Just confusing for a lay person to know which way is best...especially for fatburning.
Have lost a fair few inches of my waist in just the last 5 or so weeks, and 12 Ibs in that time...so, am doing somehting right...dispite having the odd little binge am still unable to resist that darn chocolate at times, sigh....cigarettes never had that hold over me this bad.
oh, well, must go tidy es blkinking bedroom...it's a complete tip and has to be done....I much rather just bonfire it, it's that bad

Lorns · 22/05/2007 22:53

3andnomore - Sorry for the confusion of over juicing!. Enjoy a variety of workouts to challenge your body!!

Morning
Just popping in to say hi to everyone and welcome to 3andnomore

Have a load of stuff to do around the house today as we have guests coming tomorrow. Might not be online much over the next few days but will do my best to stay active and eat well, I hope!

3andnomore · 23/05/2007 12:33

lORNS, TIS ALRIGHT....oops caps lock...must admit, in my mad days I did actually do Atkins, like years and years ago...but it wasn't my kind of diet....I mean, I really started to miss veggies and fruit as I was just so restricted....absolute nightmare...people told me I looked so pasty and unhealthy, etc...!
My aproach now is to try to eat healthy like 99% of the time but never to feel bad if I put anyhting unhealthy in my mouth, as that is just counterproductive.
DH arrived this morning back (he is posted out in Afghanistan at the mo and is home for R&R) and the last time he saw me I was around 11 st, now I am 10st, and he is very pleased with the way I look..bless...!
Anyway, got some things to do...as my mum is also going to come to visit for a month and still got some cleaning to do.
Anyways, hope everyone else is getting on alright

Lorns · 23/05/2007 12:59

3andnomore - have fun with DH

Ok may I join you guys? I need help. I used to exercise loads. I was at the gym almost daily before I had dd and I looked great.

After dd was born I got a personal trainer and she came to my house and that was great. I never lost the baby weight totally but I felt great.

about 18months ago she went on maternity leave and I quit smoking and I have hardly excercised since and I want to start back. I have put on weight and feel yucky

Lorns · 23/05/2007 22:20

Welcome ppb! Have you got a gym near you could join. Does it have a creche or have you got childcare provision. if the gym is out of the question what about home DVD's or fast paced walking - even with the pushchair? Getting a routine going is good as it helps you to stick to it. Start off easy - 2 times a week for 20-30 minutes - longer if you can and progress.

Why not ahve a look on this loooong thread to give you a few ideas and some inspiration...????

OP posts:
paulaplumpbottom · 23/05/2007 22:36

There is a gym nearby and my former nanny works in the creche. There are some beautiful places to walk locally and I do enjoy walking. I love swimmimg but it screws up the blowdrys. Its just a motivation thing for me I guess

sweetheart · 24/05/2007 15:38

Good afternoon everyone!!!

Hello to ppb - well done on taking the 1st steps!

I am here to say I am officially abandoning this thread. As much as I have tried to fight it holiday fever has well and truly set in here.

I will be rejoining you on or about Tue 5th June to banish my holiday weight gain but I make these solumn vows to you all in the meantime

I will take my excercise stuff on holiday and at least go with the intention of using them

I will try and gain no more than 5Ibs whilst I'm away.

I will try and weigh in on Tuesday 5th - although it is dd's birthday that week and also our wedding anniversary so our holiday will probably spill over into the following week!

GOOD LUCK to everyone over the next week or two! I hope you all stick to your plans and are all slimmer than me when I return

Adios amigos

Biglips · 24/05/2007 16:11

hello everyone....havent been to the gym this week . im just so knackered from this water infection ive got for the past month and im cant get motivated - just wish there was a creche around here!!

Anyway thinking of taking up running as ive been exercising since march about 14 times ive been to the gym and abit of swimming in between!. Do i has to have the gym whilst im running outside? as ive also got a cross trainer at home too.

ADVICES PLEASE!!

Lorns · 24/05/2007 22:45

Hi biglips - Hope your infection gets better soon . If you are running and cross training, the only thing you could add to your workout schedule is a bit of strength training for your upper and lower body. This can be either at the gym (classes (bodypump/body conditioning) or machines)) or via DVD! Please remember to stretch to increase your flexibiility and to return your muscles to normal after a workout!

OP posts:
Lorns · 24/05/2007 22:47

PPB - why not get a current timetable of the classes at your gym and see what takes your fancy and what you can fit in with your schedule. If you need any advice - please let me know?

Marls001 · 25/05/2007 02:23

Hi everyone!! Welcome to new people!! It's been quite a while since I've been on.
(Going to be a long one ...

Speedymama & Sweetheart, have been following your run times with awe and ... those beat-my-own-time days are over for me (weak knee), but I really enjoy reading about your results!!

Jamaica was fabulous especially since was feeling so good about new me. Even received "you must be a rock climber" somments for muscles on my back - LOL - I have never rock climbed in my life. But am now doing different kinds of hand holds on chin-up bar, just in case ...

Lorns - Don't know what CAT is much less how to do it but will just concenterate on leading with my hip bones instead of the middle of my back!!

Tried to do the upside-down shoulder presses with DH at the gym yesterday (arm dips where your back's facing the wall, your feet are in the air on the wall, and body's in a straight line - dips look like bada** pushups, but work the shoulders. They look so cool I really wanted to try them but - LOL - as DH was spotting me - I couldn't even BEGIN to do ONE. So much for playing with the big boys DH thinks I could work my way up to them

Asked DH for his workout motivations.
He works a 13-hour day, so either gets up at 5AM or spends lunch time at the gym, with a protein bar on the way back to the office.

I said, it's easy for me to just go as something to do, drop the boys off at the creche ... but why do you do it??? (not that I mind )

He said for self-esteem and health; wants to feel - and know that he looks - his best; tries to excell in many different categories like job, family, health, spirituality. And he's found that everything he can do well in one category just feeds into every other category. (i.e. can be a better parent - play/roughhouse more with DS1; can be more successful on the job - less sick days, more professional appearance ...)

I thought maybe this philosophy might be motivating in some way.

Certainly was for me. Hadn't seen past being able to fit into my old clothes and like what I see in the mirror . Although - did trip on DS1's Thomas train while carrying the baby last week & was able to - whew - immediately land on one foot and find my balance!! Thanks, Yoga!!

Lorns · 25/05/2007 16:25

Marls100 - welcome back and glad you had a good holiday. A rock climber hey!

You can CAT by clicking on the exclaimation mark next to any of my posts. Don't work though I'm just let you knwo what you need to strengthen and what you need to stretch.

Need to take the DS's swimming now so will post later

Hi everyone
Welcome back, Marls - glad you had a great holiday.

Hi to 3andnomore and paulapb

I've still not been able to get back into my diet/exercise regime since ds2 came down with a viral infection. He is only just getting back to normal now. So I am planning to enjoy the Bank holiday weekend and get back into the running/gym/diet next week.

Enjoy the holiday weekend everyone
