Hi this a new thread linked to "We want to lose 10lbs NEW THREAD"

I'm a Group exercise instructor/Personal Trainer and have been offering advice to mumsnetters!

Following suggestions that it would be good to start an exercise/nutrition advice/motivation thread - well here it is!!

just back from the gym

Hello MP - Haven't "met" you before on here but good for you on getting back to your regime! Sometimes when you've strayed it's so hard to get back on track.

Hi Speedy [waves]

Well, I'm pretty pleased with myself. I didn't have my programme card at the gym today so just decided to do a mix and match. I did a 10 min run on the treadmill and then increased it to 12 mins and managed to run 2Kms. It usually takes me 20 mins to run just over 3Km but I was feeling comfortable so increased the treadmill to 11Km/h (I usually run at between 9 and 9.5)

I think I'm better at doing short fast burts than long slower runs!

I also did 10 mins on the stepper and some weights. If I'm feeling energetic tonight I may get on the cross trainer too - try and make up for last night appaling dinner

Laloop, how far is the leg of the marathon your running?

MummyPenguin · 02/05/2007 14:14

I bloody well hope so!

laloop · 02/05/2007 14:40

Hi Mummy Penguin, welcome back Sounds like you're off to a flying start again with your gym workout/cycle today - well done!

Sweetheart, good for you on getting back to the healthy eating again. My turn to be bad today - NEVER, ever EVER again am I going to buy any of the WW choc bars. I bought a box this morning of 1.5pt choc caramel bars and because I've been eating well today I thought I would have one as a treat with a cup of tea. Well...that would have been okay but I have just eaten four of the blardy things, really don't even know why. And they're probably full of all sorts of rubbish to keep the cals low - I'd have been better just having a Mars bar or some decent dark chocolate instead. I'm obviously unsafe to be allowed near sweet things, grrrr.

Anyhoo...I'm running just over 3.5 miles in the Marathon leg, Sweetheart, so it's not too bad a distance for me. Haven't really checked out my route yet but think there's at least one or two hills - eek!

Lorns, looking a bit of advice (yet again!!) - any good exercises for strenghtening up my leg muscles? I find that when i'm running it's not always my cardiovascular stamina/fitness that lets me down but that my legs start to feel heavy and tired. Any tips very welcome from the rest of you runners as well, thanks

laloop · 02/05/2007 14:43

Meant to add 11km/hr - WOW! I haven't taken the treadmill any further than 10.5, you must have been really going for it

speedymama · 02/05/2007 14:51

Laloop, hi [waves frantically]

Good luck with the your part of the marathon. I'm doing leg strengthening exercises at home or in the gym. I do leg raises, leg curls and leg presses at the gym. At home, I do squats, lunges and jumping jacks.

I'm planning to do a 6 mile route on Saturday so hopefully the legs will be able to withstand it.

Running up a hill several times is also good for strengthening legs (as well as your lungs).

speedymama · 02/05/2007 14:53

Sweetheart, well done on the running. I ran at 10km for 10 minutes last Thursday and I could still feel it in my legs on Saturday. Keep up the good work.

sweetheart · 02/05/2007 15:49

Hello me again!

Does anyone know if pumpksin seeds are fattening? I have just brought some at the shop but don't want to eat them if they are ladden with "good" fats.

Anyone care to guess how many ww points they are? I have 100g of them.

speedymama · 02/05/2007 16:02

Just looked in my book, 10g of pumpkin seeds (1 tablespoon) is 1 point. Pumpkin seeds are a good source of protein, zinc and iron. They are also rich in unsaturated fats, which are good for the heart. They are a healthy snack so enjoy.

sweetheart · 02/05/2007 16:19

Thanks SM! might give them a try tomorrow as I've just had my afternoon packet of snack a jacks.

I eat the caramel ones to satisfy sweet cravings. Might be worth a go laloop, I think they are 2 ww points a bag.

I'm glad your choc bar things were nice at least. I brought some ww flapjacks the other week to try and "treat" myself - they were like cardboard - absolutly awful!!!! Much prefer some nice buttery flapjacks

laloop · 02/05/2007 17:00

Can I have more info on the leg curls, raises, lunges etc speedymama, pleaseeg how many reps??
I'm not doing any Davina dvd workouts this week because it wrecks me too much, and I won't have time to build up my tolerance for it before Monday's run (I can't do any exercise after that DVD for at least 24hrs!). Am going to take Lorns' point on board about needing to do the legs section more frequently rather than a killer session once a week or fortnight.

laloop · 02/05/2007 20:41

I did it, I did it, yayyyyyy!!!!! Four miles in 35 mins 36 secs Hopefully that will burn the choccy off from earlier on

bigknickersbigknockers · 03/05/2007 06:59

Hi everyone. You all sound so controlled with your diets, I only wish I could be as well behaved as you

I have managed to avoid sweets, chocolate and crisps all week which for me is good. I am going to spinning class this morning and am looking forward to that too.
I think I shall have to get my eating habits under control to see any real difference and perhaps do another exercise class during the week as well. In january next year my youngest child will be starting pre school and so I will be able to go to the gym or a class every morning without having to arange a babysitter so I hope that will make it easier for me to get more exercise in.

Laloop I TOTALLY understand where you are coming from with the WW caramel bars, I have to avoid chocolate big time because if I eat a small amount of it I just want more of it and then usually go completly off the rails and end up eating loads of it

speedymama · 03/05/2007 09:35

Laloop, congratulations on your run and that was an excellent time. Have you thought about entering a 10k?

Good luck on your marathon run.

laloop · 03/05/2007 11:04

hi everyone

I am tentatively considering a 10k, speedymama. Have this run on Monday and then Race for Life at beginning of June. After that I may have a good think about getting my distance up to 10k, don't think I would ever manage any further than that though

Bigbigk, I have 3 dc's too - 7,6 and 2 years old. Will feel weird when I actually have some time back to myself without having to arrange runs/gym visits around babysitting/creche slots, bliss! I have struggled to lose 7-10lbs since having dc3 - I lose a few, put a couple back on again. My dieting is very erratic, I am good for a couple of days and then cheat and eat biccies or something. This thread def helps me keep up the activity levels to help counteract that though

sweetheart · 03/05/2007 11:04

morning all - Laloop, well done on your run!!!!!! You must be so chuffed!

I didn't manage to get on the cross trainer last night. For some reason I have felt totally zapped of energy over the last couple of weeks AND have been feeling really achey after excercise which is not like me at all. My hand is hurting today - all the muscles feel very crampy. I'm not sure what I've done?!?!?!?!

Anyway, I have netball tonight so that will be my 4th lots of excercise this week. I'm going to try and do a 40min session on the cross trainer tomorrow to make up for missing last night too.

I also skipped breakfast today in a bid to make up for my lunch out this lunchtime. Will report back later if I've managed to stay on track or if the desert trolley was just too delicious to resist.

sweetheart · 03/05/2007 11:06

Laloop, It's actually really strange how similar you are to me in alot of ways. My dc are 7 and 1.5. I can't get my last 7Ibs off and I find it really hard to be constantly good. I always feel like I need a "treat" after a few days (which usually decends into binge eating!)

laloop · 03/05/2007 12:08

I have that "treat" mentality too - will have to stop myself using choc or food as a treat and start buying a new book, mag or make-up instead
(much easier said than done of course!)

We're heading off for a couple of days again - school is closed tomorrow and Mayday. Won't be back until Sunday night. Be good everyone (well, as good as you can be at the weekends when it's so easy to crack open a botle of cold beer or have a nice glass of wine ... )

Go for it, girls - think SUMMER clothes

sweetheart · 03/05/2007 16:19

Just back from lunch, I was quite good but perhaps not as good as I could have been.

I went straight to the salads section and didn't even look at anything else. I had a cajan chicken salad which unfortunatly was covered in a very creamy dressing. I had strawberrys & cream for pudding but the cream wasn't clotted cream or thick double cream it was squirty cream so I'm sure that not too bad

I will make sure I have a small portion of dinner and work really hard at netball

I hope everyone else is having a good day

Marls001 · 03/05/2007 18:17

Hi all - have not had time to catch up with posts except did see CONGRATS laloop on such a good time! Off to Jamaica tomorrow! Have been extra good with exercise (so much so that DS1 asked why aren't we going to the gym this morning). Packing some workout clothes for the gym at the resort too.

Happy exercising!!

MummyPenguin · 04/05/2007 11:28

Marls001 - that's so not fair going to Jamaica!! Very Have a lovely time!

Gym again this morning. Did a 15 minute run on t/mill, then a walk quite fast on an incline. Was on there for 40 mins in total (did a bit of slower walking too.) Then did some upper and lower body weights, then 15 minutes on cross trainer, then some abs on the swiss ball. Cycled there and back again.

Officialy knackered now!

Biglips · 04/05/2007 20:57

marls - have a fabulous time on your hols xx

god im feeling so depressed atm as i want to go to the gym 3 times a week and its impossible with having a toddler! as my mum sometimes babysits and Dp sometimes babysits if both got the time on their hands. I prefer to go about 5pm till 7pm at the gym....if i leave it till 6pm...my body gone asleep!! i can only managed twice a week . I havent lost or gain and i still feel the same, apart from this week im so tired and i could've of gone tonite but my bosy is asleep as im slowing down on the gym situation. (it be fab if it did have a creche)

PLEASE SOMEONE KICK ME UP THE ARSE AND GO ON SUNDAY (im off to a marathon shopping tmrw).

i need to go on a diet though and start using the classes as fancy the weighted workout and also the boxercise class.

im not sure if i have had said it but im starting to run on the treadmill - first time for me and THIS IS THE LONGEST I EVER STAYED AT A GYM!!

bigknickersbigknockers · 05/05/2007 08:13

Hi all. I feel such a fraud coming on this thread as you all seem to control your diets really well and do loads of running and fit in loads of visits to the gym.

I am in the same situation as you biglips, 3 children ages 6 and half, 3 and 16 mths.
My plan has always been to join the gym when my youngest goes to pre school next january but its costing me £9 a week for 2 spinning classes and would be cheaper if I had a daytime membership at £30 a month. If I get a membership I would get all classes and gym visits free so am seriously considering it (please feel free to talk me into it)

I was asked if I had lost weight yesterday which really made my day, even though its only 2lbs I think my legs are just firming up with the spinning classes lol.

Anyway I shall keep posting as you ladies have really inspired me to stick to the diet and get my arse into gear. thanks for that

Biglips · 06/05/2007 22:35

wow Bigknickers - spinning class....ive been watching them and it make me go all dizzy - well done!

Well ive just had a chat with Dp and ive told whats are my days to go to the gym and he agreed - hooray!!

laloop · 06/05/2007 23:01

Hi everyone
Just popped in to say a quick hello, will hopefully catch up properly with the thread tomorrow. Have been away since Thursday night, spent Friday afternoon pulling the dc's around in the water on their bodyboards and dinghy so that was my exercise. Went for a 2 mile run on Saturday morning then a gentle 1 hour's cycle during afternoon. Haven't done anything today, tomorrow is Marathon day here. Will let you know how I get on

laloop · 07/05/2007 20:31

Hope you all had a nice Bank Holiday

Did my 3.5 mile run in about 32 or 33 mins. Our relay team finished the Marathon in around 3 hrs 45 mins
