Hi this a new thread linked to "We want to lose 10lbs NEW THREAD"

I'm a Group exercise instructor/Personal Trainer and have been offering advice to mumsnetters!

Following suggestions that it would be good to start an exercise/nutrition advice/motivation thread - well here it is!!

i had a break yesterday as went to watch my SD doing ballet/dance competition against another ballet school. They lost out but got a medal as in her group were very young but in teh other group were older (compo under 9 yrs of age)

so i uses the cros trainer on Wed just on a manual for 10 mins...bliemy that was abit hard as i need to put my radio in the gym room

how is everyone getting on?

laloop · 23/03/2007 09:31

Hi bigcremeeggs

I've phoned gym this morning and have booked ds2 into creche for 1.5 hours to see how he gets on. Going to do my usual gym workout then swim. BTW, I loathe the crosstrainer but force myself to go on it for 10 mins as it is meant to be such a good all-over workout, but it kills me ...

No gym yesterday but went for a half hour walk - trying to work out a route near our house that I could run either in mornings or early evening, think it will be about 2 miles. Can't decide which way to run it - there are two really steep hills and one much, much longer (seems to go on forever as it is pretty straight) but slightly flatter hill. Will have to decide whether to run the two steep hills and down the flatter one or up one steep, down one steep and then the longer "when-will-this-hill-ever-end-it's-doing-my-head-in" less steep one. What a dilemma

Have a nice weekend everyone

laloop · 23/03/2007 14:18

No problems with ds2 in the longer creche session this morning - will have to take a look at the bodypump classtimes now, Lorns. Is it a really intense workout, I'm scared ...

Did just over 3k (about 2 miles??) random hill run on the treadmill after 5 mins rower warm-up. Then half a kilometre swim. Feeling energised

Lorns · 23/03/2007 14:35

Hi everyone - hope you are well!!

Hi laloop - no it's fairly easy going and FUN! You should be instructed to start off with a small weights on your bar. It may feel at times like you're flinging it around but it's good to have light weight on as you need to concentrate on technique at first - not only posture but when executing the moves. Also it may seem easy at the time, but 24-48 hours after you may feel sore!!

There are 2 tracks dedicated to the legs - squat track and lunge track. These both have options - using your own body weight, holding a plate or using the bar for a little support rather than resting on the meaty part of your upper back!

All will become clear...!!!

If you want I can send you a "what to expect" guide" via email?

As for your shorter gym session pehaps you can leave this flexible. It appears that if you are able to run with DH then you'll be fitting in 3 cardio workouts a week and so that 30 minutes might be best spent (after warming up) doing weights. Can the gym staff write you out a programme? Tell them your aims and objectives and they should be able to oblige! Otherwise concentrate on Cardio!

BigCremeEggs · 23/03/2007 14:38

BigCremeEggs · 24/03/2007 11:05

hi all....cant face the gym today as got a hangover!!! but ive got a question and i prob know the answer myself!!

ive got cellulite on my thighs, tummy (had emergency c-section in 2004), on the back of my thighs and my bum. im 1 stone overweight so i need toning up. Also by my ankles - on top of my ankles - feels and looks abit puffy - cos its im abit overweight and need toning up or not enough drinking water??

OrmIrian · 26/03/2007 13:18

I still didn't manage 3 miles - I extended my Sunday morning run but about 10 miles I'm sure!! But when I got home and checked the map it still wasn't 3 miles.....

I will get there ...I will I will..... Soooo much harder than the damned treadmill.

On a positive note I have something good to say about Fruit Shoot . When empty they are an excellent size for filling with water and taking on a run. Not too big and heavy unlike the water bottle I had for the gym. We'll gloss over why I had one in the house in the first place.....

BigCremeEggs · 26/03/2007 18:21

hi everyone...ive not been to the gym since last Tues!! but went on the cross trainer at home on the wed as ive been busy and now im ill!!

What do u all do when ya ill? as i feel guilty of not going

Lorns · 26/03/2007 21:37

BGE - sorry to hear you're ill. Your body will like it if you recover first before exercising again! GWS

OrmIrian - you sure you've not got a magic map that just shrinks everything just to annoy you?!!

You're right to will get there. Just run for fun and the miles will come....

OP posts:
OrmIrian · 27/03/2007 08:01

Thanks Lorns I rechecked the map and it was 3 miles...just. But you are right - I should be running for 'fun'...... grin]

BCE - I've got a cold and I have to admit to not running this morning. I did on Sunday when I felt a bit under the weather but today it's really developed. Not worth it if you really don't feel up to it but make sure you get back to it as soon as you do - very easy to get out of the habit which is my failing.

I finally got some positive comments about my karate from sensei last night! About time - was feeling like a total spare part until last night. It's seeming like a possiblity now.

BigCremeEggs · 27/03/2007 09:37

ggoooodddd i fffeeeeeeeeelll so iiiilllllll!!!

im truely ill!

laloop · 27/03/2007 09:59

Bigcremeeggs, rest up until you're better, hopefully soon

We were away at the weekend and no exercise done yesterday so will need to do something today. First, have to do a load of housework - will stick some tunes on and go for it

Catch up with you all later

MuckyAnthea · 27/03/2007 11:51

Hi ladies

Am now running 20 minutes, then staying on treadmill doing 30 minutes on incline up to 5.5 then back down again. Then doing 30 minutes on the cross trainer. Bloody hell!!!!

MuckyAnthea · 27/03/2007 11:52

Thats 30 minutes walking on the treadmill, not running. I'm not that clever...

Lorns · 27/03/2007 13:22

MuckyAnthea - well done with CV! You know you don't have to do that much CV - that's going some! Are you still as "strong" at the end as half way through or are you struggling with the x-trainer bit?

OP posts:
MuckyAnthea · 28/03/2007 01:20

I'm strong all the way through baby!!
I also swim on the days I am not at the gym, so I think that is what maybe has caused the sudden fitness spurt.
Will be away for 10 days, which means no gym really hope I don't ruin what I started. Will walk and try my best to keep my activity levels up while I am away though...

Lorns · 28/03/2007 09:37

MuckyAnthea - have a great time!

OP posts:
speedymama · 28/03/2007 09:44

My last run was on Thursday and I have done no exercise since. I was still on my period when I did my run and I felt awful afterwards. I have been feeling quite lethargic since so have given my body a rest. Also, DH has been working away since the weekend so it is just me and the twins. I have had to get up at 5.30 am to get them ready for nursery and myself ready for work as well as hang washing out. I am so tired.

I plan to go the gym after work this evening now that DH is back and hopefully go for an early morning run before he goes to work. Hopefully I'll start to feel better.

Have a great holidy Muckyanthea.

Lorns · 28/03/2007 10:17

Oh now I hate periods! The worst for me apart from the every worsening of the dreaded PMT is thinking clearly enough to get my choreography out of my mouth in the proper order! I find the week before hard work!! Don't thinkg my participants notice too much as it's only occassional and I've very hard on myself sometimes!

Speedy - you do sound as though you're doing alot when your DH is away. Glad he's back!!

Marls001 · 29/03/2007 02:50

Lorns and Speedymama, . Lorns - at least no one in your classes notices!
Have just finished w/ mine & it really threw me off!!
Luckily have been put on "seasonale" pill (take it 3 solid months & get 4 periods/year) - next one's in Sept.!

Tried this - "medicine ball archbishop " - at gym workout yesterday ... sore on triangle from L hipbone, to R hipbone, to belly button; also entire shoulder area! Very efficient total body exercise, IMO.

Incredible video here - what fitness models do to make their workouts more interesting! Man's stomach at the end looks a bit like mine (before he draws it in, that is ) ... Discovered one reason mine's been poochy - even DH didn't notice it after 8 yrs marriage, but - I tend to swayback!
So when I just push my hips forward a bit (instead of leading with my middle back/my belly button, as is my "natural" stance) -stomach suddenly looks much better!

Happy exercising, everyone!! (I'm taking a break tomorrow - too sore!)

Lorns · 29/03/2007 22:31

Marls100 - I can give you some exercises to help correct swayback posture if you want?

You know for a minute I felt guilty that I hadn't spotted "swayback" for you but there again I've never met you! What's that about eating, living, breathing exercise.....

speedymama · 30/03/2007 21:08

I manage to go for a 2 mile run yesterday at 6.45am and despite feeling lethargic, I managed to knock 10 seconds of my last time so I felt a lot better. I then proceeded to do Davina's Power of 3 and was totally spent for the rest of the day.

speedymama · 31/03/2007 09:12

I've just completed another 4 mile run and knocked 3 minutes and 17 seconds of my previous time. I am so please because I did not look at my stop watch until I had finished so it as a pleasant surprise.

I think this time I will forego any additional exercise other than abdominal ones. It is really refreshing to complete ones exercise regime by 9am because I feel raring to go. No doubt by this afternoon my legs will feel like they are attached to concrete boulders.

Hope everyone else is doing well.
