Hi this a new thread linked to "We want to lose 10lbs NEW THREAD"

I'm a Group exercise instructor/Personal Trainer and have been offering advice to mumsnetters!

Following suggestions that it would be good to start an exercise/nutrition advice/motivation thread - well here it is!!

ooh hello everyone

I'm going to join you on here because I've been told I have osteopenia (which is a precursor to getting osteoporosis - I had a bone scan to diagnose it) so part of my plan to get my bone density up is doing lots of weight bearing exercises so I've bought the Davina DVD.

Did pump last night (found it quite mild, was very pleased!) and did cardio boxing tonight (a little bit harder). I'm going to try and do one a night this week and see how it goes. I got the boxset that has the power of 3 too (it seems to be an hour long workout - not sure what that's like!).

foxinsocks · 31/03/2007 22:50

oops, have read thread and realised I probably should have asked if I could join in rather than diving in head first .

laloop · 01/04/2007 11:46

Hi everyone

Foxinsocks, great to have you on board

Haven't been online much during the last few days. Weather has been fantasic here for this time of year so have been away to Co Fermanagh at our newly acquired caravan - dh has already worked out a great running route for me round the loughshore

WW buddies - have switched to the Core plan this week to give it a try, will let you know how I get on at next weigh-in. Have found it okay so far (except for yesterday when I had a wee bit of wine and some crisps )

Hope everyone is well, keep up the good work. Please keep me motivated, summer is on its way and I want to be SLIM

BigCremeEggs · 01/04/2007 22:37

i just so cant blardy wait to get back in the gym as not been for nearly 2 weeks with this awful cold and a bad cough - it sounded i was smoking 100 a day but i dont smoke and nor my Dp..i think hes got the cold now! but his plan was that he too join the gym tmrw to get fitter as he go in the mornings but at the moment lets hope he have a 24 hour cold like he usually does !!!!

BigCremeEggs · 01/04/2007 22:39

oh and my body feeling abit heavy...prob will just stay on the bikes tmrw at the gym for just half an hour...or even better if im totally recovered by tmrw its usually a 1.5 hours at the gym

foxinsocks · 02/04/2007 11:35

thanks for the welcome

I did the core stability davina thing last night and although I didn't feel it at the time, some of my muscles (in places I never knew I had them ) are a bit sore today!

BigCremeEggs - we had that cough/cold bug and it was horrid. Really lingered on! I'd take it easy in the gym if I was you because you don't want to wear yourself out again too quickly.

BigCremeEggs · 02/04/2007 18:04

hiya everyone- managed to get to the gym - HOORAY!!!! as i was planning to go for half an hour as still abit chesty as given antibiotics today by docs. I was on the bike and 5 mins later i couldnt get my breath as was coughing so much..

Stayed for 45 mins

speedymama · 03/04/2007 08:32

Hi everyone. DH is being spurred on by my exercise enthusiasm and he has been out running too! (10 miles in 4 days).

On Sunday, whilst we were sat in the garden, he decided to see how many full press ups he could do without stopping. So I joined him. Initially I did 25 and then I did 15 to 20 each time until I had done a 100 in total. We then did jumping jacks and I managed 52 before stopping but DH did 100 without stopping.

We did the same thing last night but I only did a total of 50 press ups. We also did crunches and bicyle crunch (100 in total for me).

Also, yesterday morning I did Tae Bo followed by Pilates Ab work out.

Today is a rest day but I know DH will goad me into doing more press ups and ab crunches!

OrmIrian · 03/04/2007 08:53

Owwww! Help. What have I done to my ankles? There were no mats in the dojo last night as they'd all been used somewhere else for the weekend and hadn't come back, so we trained on a bare wooden floor. My ankles were sore last night and I had to stop several times during my run this morning because I felt like they were going to collapse. Is this likely to be serious or is it just soreness due to an unaccustomed bashing? I don't want to stop doing anything.......

laloop · 03/04/2007 21:10

Hi all

Hope you're feeling ok now, OrMirian. No running this week but have just been for really nice walk beside river this evening.

Lorns · 04/04/2007 09:07

Hi everyone! Lost my own thread because I'd not posted for a few days!!
Foxinsocks - a big welcome!
Speedymama- well done on the pressups and jacks. Can I just check you've got the correct alignment for both?

Press ups Set the shoulders up towards ears, slightly back and shoulder blades down into a soft v shape in towards the spine. Feet hip distance or slightly more apart and onto back of your toes. Before you lift into press up position draw in your abs 30% towards the spine. Neck is long , so you look slightly forwards onto the ground.

Hands are placed in line with shoulders and then walked out wider so that when you press down your elbows will be in line with your wrists. Inhale as you come down and exhale on the way back up!

Watch you don't banana (curve lower back) or stick butt into the air!

Jacks - when you jack out feet should point slightly outwards and kneed bend and are positioned over shoelaces.

You could also try cross-country skis (sometimes called spotty dogs). Just imagine your on a cross trainer and with feet hip distance apart alternate your legs fwd and backwards (heels down). Your arms can swing at same time with alt leg.

OrmIrian - ouch!! With no support at all for your ankles you have pobably stressed your muscles fibres and ligaments big time. I would suggest going to a deep sports massuse to have some scar tissue removed. These are now areas of trauma.

I know it wasn't their fault (or was it) that there were no mats but they should have modified the workout to ensure that there was no impact on your body. aargh!!!

Laloop - hope you're enjoying your lovely walks!

BigCreameggs - hope the anitbiotics kick in soon. Listen to your body....!

Lorns - thanks for the advice. They were quire swollen last night but this morning are much better. The mats were removed for a kickboxing/karate tournament in another venue. Apparently they couldn't be moved back in time. It didn't bother me because I was used to training in bare feet for yoga but forgot that there is so much more impact in karate. I want to ask some more stuff about karate but I don't want to hijack too much. Will start another thread.

Lorns · 04/04/2007 16:47

OrmIrian - you won't be hi-jacking but will probably get more answers on a separate thread! I'll post if I know the answer tho!

Speedy - Great idea & great workout!! Is there a norm one should be for that? Maybe my DH & I will try it!!

Lorns - Please do let me know some exercises for swayback! That would be great.

Went hard at gym today with 30 min cardio on "skating" machine - said I burned 600 calories but I don't think so. Can't see how it would be possible. That machine always seems to be way off in comparison with eliptical or treadmill. Probably burned 250/300.

Then chin-ups w/holds, calf exercises, some yoga. I was beat by the end of it!

DH & I worked out at same time so had lunch there together ... love doing that b/c we can't so much talk during the day with 2 young children!!

They sell drinks called Isopure , 40g protein. I can't stand the taste of protein powder. But these taste like fruit punch!

Lorns, how much protein can be absorbed at once? If I drank an Isopure all at once, wouldn't some of that 40g just flush out?

speedymama · 05/04/2007 09:12

Thanks for the tips Lorns.

I ran another 2 miles yesterday and knocked 32 seconds of my time. I then did Davina's Power of 3 but had to give up on the legs section after 2 minutes because my legs were so tired. Therefore I just did the upper body and abs section. I then did the Tae bo 8 minute workout for a final cardio blast. I feel so much fitter and stronger.

I am planning to run another 2 miles this morning because I will not be able to exercise properly until next week because we will be visiting family.

Will probably also do press ups and tummy exercises with DH later today as he is not at work and DTS are at nursery because I am spring cleaning, starting with the net curtains. Oh joy!.

OrmIrian · 05/04/2007 09:45

lorns "will probably get more answers on a separate thread!" Not so as you'd notice..... S'OK though. I plucked up courage to ask my question on the other karate message board that I go to and gots loads of helpful advice...and no-one laughed at me!! Best advice being to practice beating up DH... . Excellent excuse.

BigCremeEggs · 05/04/2007 18:04

Went to the Gym again this week for an hour and a half. My legs were aching after being on the bike for 13 mins - random - 4.8km... i thought my legs was gonna run off!!!!

Had anyone got any gym clothes that they dont wants anymore? and any health & fitness mags too pppppppppppplllllluuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrssssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

laloop · 05/04/2007 22:07

Just nipping in to say Happy Easter to you all - will be away now until Monday or Tuesday. I'll try not to go too mad on the choccy eggs ... promise

Keep up the good work everyone!

Will have a look Bigcremeeggs for mags when I get back but think I may have chucked a lot of my old Zest mags etc into recycling box recently.

Speak to you all next week. Just one quick question - are MBTs suitable for gym workouts and/or running ( asking for SIL!), Thanks

BigCremeEggs · 05/04/2007 22:33

have a happy Easter Laloop and thanks

now i just know i cant keep away from Easter Eggs as they are so yum yum.

Marls001 · 06/04/2007 02:46

Laloop - I've been using MBTs for running for the past 2.5 years. I can't run in anything else. If I try to run in Nikes or Pearl Izumis - which I wear to gym when not running - my knees will hurt. So tell your SIL yes!

BigCremeEggs · 06/04/2007 18:43

Went to the gym yesterday and my thighs are abit sore but i was expecting as i had a good 'race' on the bike.

I used to do all the exercises in a hour and a half of what ive been taught to use. Now its all in an hour but i feel i need to do more exercises as im not really out of breath. How long do they keep me on the same training?.. as ive been on them since 14/03

BigCremeEggs · 06/04/2007 18:48

ive extended the level up to 2 sumtimes 3 on the bike (im doing random) and also the speed on the treadmill

Lorns · 08/04/2007 22:44

Happy easter ! Will answer q's maybe 2morrow ot Tuesday!!

MORNING everyone

i got up @ 6.30am - it took me half an hour to get up as im not a morning person but i got up cos i had to wake DP up for his workout on the cross trainer. He did well so i thought ill go on it whilst DD was still asleep in bed. i was knackered after 6mins doing flat walk!! as last time did 10 mins easy. Must still take it easy. My personal trainer had not told me how long am i on this training programme before they changed it?...DP reckons 12 weeks but as he used to do athletics when he was younger and had a personal trainer too and he reckons that ive got a very basic workout and maybe not doing enough
