As the first thread is full, I thought I'd start this one to dip a toe in the water and see if anyone else is still around. At the end of the last thread I think a few of us had decided to have the summer off and come back to it in September - so here I am.

Hope a few of the old gang are still around Smile

I've just remembered, one of our friends used to raise chickens for meat but gave up as when she took them for slaughter, she'd very often lose a significant % of the birds. Apparently a lot fall off the abattoir machinery (after death) and 'disappear' into the workings. If you're a commercial producer with a huge flock its not significant but if you're a smallholder losing a handful of birds can have a huge impact.

I don't know anyone else who does 'hobby' chicken farming in the same way as people do sheep and pigs.

Kinky Hi and glad you found it. I am new too and its a lovely thread.
Prof I live very rural too. I really need to start going to local farmers markets and getting local food but it just becomes so convenient to get things under one roof. But, if had said that I will start soon.
desperately I remember days of cigs and vodka and dancing till dawn and being skinny (although I thought I was fat). Silly isn't it that we didn't even know who great we looked.

Blodss · 31/10/2015 20:30

I would love to have chickens and being rural I could but I know I would never kill them and eat them. I would get eggs from them and would give them all cute names and cuddle them. I cant eat lamb because we have them.

Kinky. Interesting that you gave been recommended low carb diet for fibromyalgia. SW are mad keen on pushing artificial sweeteners which are OK every now and then but ultimately clog you up with toxins and are a known culprit for fibromyalgia sufferers. My sister has just been diagnosed with it and this week we have been trying out my friends Chi Machine. You lie on the floor with your ankles on it and it rocks you side to side so that your body wiggles. It claims to cure everything under the sun but essentially it encourages circulation and lymphatic drainage (drainage of toxins from all the body tissues) which us why it's good for fibromyalgia sufferers. I can feel that it is definitely working. Afterwards I'm needing to drink a lot of water and going to the loo often which as a massage therapist I know is a sign that the body is ridding itself of toxins. Chi Machine is bloody expensive but if it does everything it claims to do I think it might be worth it. I've slept really well the last few nights and previously have had a bout of insomnia so I'm sold on it. Anyway, on a different note, does anyone know where I can get hold of an advent calendar which has very high cocoa content like 80% or more??

Blodss · 31/10/2015 22:01

Interesting post Fluffy. What a wonderful career you have. Helping people through massage. The power of touch is amazing in more ways than one.
Had a look online for dark chocolate advent calendars and this is what the search brought up

KinkyDorito · 02/11/2015 07:43

Fluffy thanks for this. I will have a look at the Chi machines. I think we all deserve one of those advent calendars Grin.

Right then - first day back after the holidays and I'm rolling my diet sleeves up. (And pulling my diet socks up too)

I was going to have dry November but not only is the 20th dh's birthday, we're also getting his brain scan results that day too so for now I'm off wine til then. What happens after that depends on the result.

I'm back on Kettlebells after only doing them once over the half term, this morning's workout is already out of the way.

Weighed myself this morning, still 11st 7lbs so no major change. Let's see if almost 3 weeks off the booze makes a difference.

OP posts:
KinkyDorito · 02/11/2015 16:24

Do you teach Prof, or are you just off at half term?

I'm currently signed off with crappy Fibro. It has been horrific for several weeks now, although I made it worse by trying to go back to work too quickly and set it off again big-style. I am really, really hoping that this WOE helps me to settle down. I want my life back. It is very depressing, in bed all day when I just want to be at work and with people.

I think I'm going to try and do a little bit of swimming tonight to see if it helps. Dr has suggested I try and start again. I was swimming regularly and feeling quite good, then I got an awful virus a few weeks ago and it triggered my Fibro off. Sigh. I would love to try Kettlebells or other weights, but there's no way I can do it at the moment. I'm sure strength training would probably help me, but I am too tired to try atm.

Beef stew in the slow cooker all day. It is smelling lush in here. Smile

ProfYaffle · 02/11/2015 16:35

It does sound horribly depressing, Kinky, fingers crossed that the swimming helps and you're feeling better soon.

I'm a SAHM but dh had the half term off work so we were off on holiday, socialising, meals out etc I stayed low carb but didn't track like I normally do and didn't exercise as much. Now the kids are back at school I can crack on a bit more.

desperatelyseekingamovingdate · 02/11/2015 16:47

Hi prof, gosh missed the bit about your husband having a brain scan, hope everything is alright.

Kinky - idont know anything about fibro, anything long term is so depressing. Good luck with the swimming and hopefully this woe will benefit your condition.

I am off to Madrid tomorrow - not that i have packed, eeekkk.

I am going to TRY to keep lower carb on holiday but no promises

KinkyDorito · 02/11/2015 17:23

Yes, Prof, everything crossed for his scan Flowers. SAHM with chance to get out and exercise sounds fab, although having half term enjoying family time together is lovely and I don't blame you for easing up.

Thanks desperately. Enjoy Madrid, I am sure it will be wonderful. Smile

ProfYaffle · 02/11/2015 17:32

Thanks for the good wishes. dh has a brain tumour (though he's fine, not as dramatic as it sounds!) He was first diagnosed 11 years ago, had his big op then a 2nd one 5 years ago when it re-grew. He still has annual scans. We know it's growing again but very slowly, it's benign and now in his sinuses rather than brain cavity. It could be much, much worse.

He had his scan during the half term so we're now twiddling our thumbs til the appointment on the 20th. He's had a few visual problems recently so he's worried this year but I kind of think it's more age related changes to his eye sight. Plus his glasses prescription is really old. Doesn't stop him (well, us) worrying though.

Oh, forgot to say, have a fab holiday Desperately!

Blodss · 03/11/2015 10:51

prof hope your husbands scan results are good.

pnutter · 03/11/2015 15:59

Sorry hope it's ok to ask a quick low carb question. Is corned beef ok? Thanks in advance

LetMeBeLight · 03/11/2015 17:01

Good to see the new faces! Hope you're having fun in Madrid desperately, and fingers well and truly crossed for you Prof.

I've been ploughing on. Not particularly good, not particularly bad. Being busy means I'm still not getting enough time to devote to exercise, but on the plus side, I keep working through lunch (without really noticing!)

ProfYaffle · 03/11/2015 17:44

Thanks for the good wishes Let and Blodss. Working through your lunch without noticing has to be a good sign!

Pnutter - yes, corned beef is OK. I buy ready sliced every now and then and have it as a 'head in the fridge' type of snack.

OP posts:
Blodss · 03/11/2015 17:48

pnutter corned beef is low carb but some paleoists would not be happy with it as it is cured.

LetMeBeLight if the eating is okish then your doing good.

Blodss · 03/11/2015 18:01

Im doing ok on the eating front. Did have a slip yesterday and ate some milk chocolate but I had only eaten a small meal all day at dinner time so it was ok in the end though I usually don't eat milk in any form. Today is better and have had a fried egg and mushrooms and half a tomato. May have some trout with white wine and coriander later with loads of veg.

ProfYaffle · 03/11/2015 18:04

I had my first spaghetti squash for dinner tonight. Grown on our allotment, I switched from my usual kind of squash for a lower carb variety. Have to say it wasn't very spaghetti like - tasted fine though.

pnutter · 03/11/2015 18:43

Thank you yes just fancied a slice to snack on ..getting a bit full of eggs

Blodss · 03/11/2015 19:42

Someone was saying they missed pizza but I can remember who. Cauliflower pizza base is really good and you can then add all your fave toppings with or without cheese. Thinking. Salami, olives, onions, tomato and herb base, bacon, prawns, garlic, capers, mushrooms and cheese if you want.

Blodss · 03/11/2015 19:43

cant.......I cant remember who

pnutter · 03/11/2015 20:35

How do you make the cauliflower pizza base please ...I've actually got a cauliflower in the fridge !!
